2015-07-16 Thread Tim Donohue

Hi Eric,

We'd need information on the underlying error. It should be displayed if
you simply click that [show] link next to the Java full stacktrace
option on the error page. Or you should be able to locate it in the logs
using this guide:

https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Troubleshoot+an+error

Once you've located the error, if it doesn't make sense, you are welcome
to forward that error message to this mailing list and we'll try to help.

Good luck,
Tim

The first step in resolving a problem with any software is finding as
much information as possible about what happened. That information
may be in the stack traces, and more information may be in the log
files.

If you need more help, we will need to see the stack traces and the
portions of the log file which surround the time of the error.

2015-01-09 Thread Mohamed Mohideen Abdul Rasheed
Hello,

This issue is tracked at https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-640. The issue
has a 4 year old patch file that seem to fix this problem (tested in Dspace
4.1). Looks like the patch did not make into the main codebase because of
insufficient testing.

As per the comment in JIRA, this problem does not affect Dspace 5.

Mohamed

Dear Vinod,

We are receiving this kind of error message too (DSpace 4.1, linux, JSPUI).
Dozens per day...
I found that it is caused by Baiduspider indexing bot, which is trying access
the DSPACE browse page, but without passing the browse type parameter.
Therefore, IMHO, this is not related to the Lucene index, but only with the
wrong URL request sent from Baiduspider.

Check it out some lines from our access_log (/var/log/httpd/access_log):

Stuart has suggested why this may be happening on a regular basis.
Apart from that, it is common for this to occur occasionally when
clients abort a page load or download. If you only want to address the
consequence - a long log message for a mostly harmless event, use this
patch [1] for your DSpace 3 or upgrade to DSpace 4.

We will be upgrading to 4.X in Jan 2015, after 5.X is released.

Not really fixed, please note that the message is only reduced from a
full stacktrace to a single line. But of course, you can tweak the log
level if you want to hide it completely.

A monitoring system sending a HTTP request every ten seconds and closing the
connection before any data is transferred will give you symptoms similar to
this.

Hi Robert,

the problem is not with the software - not with DSpace. DSpace uses a
library called Apache PDFBox to extract the text from PDFs. This
library can't extract the text from this particular file, most
commonly this is due to the PDF either being damaged or in a format it
can't work with (PDF is a container that can contain various types of
content). Perhaps this can shed light on this particular error, even
though it might not help you resolve it:

http://forum.openkm.com/viewtopic.php?f=3t=8187

If you need (e.g. you have many files in this format), you might try
asking on the PDFBox mailing list why this happens and how to work
around it (that will almost surely involve changing the process of how
you generate the PDF).

Anyway, if PDFBox reports an error for a particular PDF, DSpace skips
indexing it and continues with the next file.

I have supposed that you came from DSpace 1.8, if your older DSpace version is
prior 1.8 you have to run all sql file that you can find in etc folder from
your version to 3.x.
By the way for more info about upgrade from 1.8 to 3.x please read

Hi Lewatle,

1) it's not a bash script, it's SQL
2) you're using the wrong file (database_schema.sql)

Log in as your DSpace user and run it like this:

psql YOUR_DATABASE_NAME
dspace-3.2-src-release/dspace/etc/postgres/database_schema_18-3.sql

If you're upgrading from an earlier version of DSpace, you have to run
all the relevant scripts in correct order, e.g. if upgrading 1.6.x to
3.2:
1) database_schema_16-17.sql
2) database_schema_17-8.sql
3) database_schema_18-3.sql

Hi Lewatle,

it's impossible to know if this even is a problem without more
context. You have to describe when this occurs - what page are you
visiting that throws that exception. It may be completely normal to
get it if you request a nonsense URL from XMLUI.

You should always mention your DSpace version, interface (since this
is a Cocoon exception, it's obvious here that you're using XMLUI) and
XMLUI theme. Full stack trace might help to diagnose the problem (if
it is a problem).

Hi Helix

Thanks for the respond as always, this problem has been forwarded to me so I
have already asked if the person can forward screenshots to me and list
activities that he was performing so it can also be clear to me , I will
request data that he is entering as you said he may be requesting nonsense
URL, I hope with additional info from him this problem may be clear, since line
of code he send to me is inadequate.

Think I fixed it.

I set xmlui as the ROOT app and didn't change it in the config base_url.

So to fix it I change the base_url from
http://naturalproducts.bi.up.ac.za:8080/xmlui/ to
http://naturalproducts.bi.up.ac.za:8080/

Seems to be okay now.

That makes sense. He was requesting the xmlui URL fragment from the
XMLUI webapp, to which it of course responded it doesn't exist (in
fact it means page not found).

Just to put things in perspective, he was asking for URL which with
the old base_url would be:
http://naturalproducts.bi.up.ac.za:8080/xmlui/xmlui/

Naveed,

Funny, we just started getting the same error intermittently today, as
well. For us it's only happening once every few hours.

I've been digging through our logs for more info. For us, these errors
*always* occur from the same web crawler/bot, which is identifying
itself as:

Yeti/0.01 (nhn/1noon, [EMAIL PROTECTED], check robots.txt daily and
follow it)

I've been searching around on this bot now. There's some indications
that this may just be a bad bot:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/search_engine_spiders/3449200.htm

I'm not sure if this is the same problem you are seeing, Naveed?

Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace error

Hi Tim,

Yes, same problem - our apache access log shows the bot:-

61.247.217.34 - - [20/Nov/2007:20:06:18 +] GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1
200 166 - Yeti/0.01 (nhn/1noon, yetibot@
naver.com, check robots.txt daily and follow it)

I'll block this IP.

Thanks,

Naveed

 Naveed,

Funny, we just started getting the same error intermittently today, as
well. For us it's only happening once every few hours.

I've been digging through our logs for more info. For us, these errors
*always* occur from the same web crawler/bot, which is identifying itself
 as:

Yeti/0.01 (nhn/1noon, [EMAIL PROTECTED], check robots.txt daily and
 follow it)

I've been searching around on this bot now. There's some indications
that this may just be a bad bot:

I'm not sure if this is the same problem you are seeing, Naveed?

 Hi

Does anyone know what the error below relates to? we've had these errors
occurring intermittently today - perhaps tomcat needs a re-start?
