The consensus is to put translated messages from all the files into one
file.

Documentation says dspace-xmlui/src/main/webapp/i18n/messages.xml should
be edited in dspace/modules/xmlui/src/main/webapp/i18n/ directory.
What about the other three? Should I change the name and translate them in
their directory? Or is there a recommended directory where I should copy
them?
