To further explain the solution
open \lib\xsl\core\page-structure.xsl

Look for the following tag 
This element cannot be empty. So add some text to it 
mirage

or else you can replace it with
mirage

This should fix the IE8 issue.

Thanks for sharing. I have experienced the same issue and managed to resolved
easily with your tips. The line to edit in page-structure.xsl is #318. 

Removing the default text mirage causes IE8 compatibility issue. Instead
use display:none which solves the problem. e.g., 

mirage

In page-structure file I have removed the word mirage and leave empty space 
then save, when I reload my browser on IE8 the xmlui pages on mirage theme 
showed with big fond size, then I typed a word to replace mirage pages showed 
with normal size, if I remember well is in line 331.

When I open this website with IE 9 it opens fine with normal fond,  but with 
Internet Explorer 8 it opens with huge fond size, how can I fix that problem. 
For info, I have modified message.xml file I was just changing naming not 
actual code, then I have changed news-xmlui.xml

I am running Mirage theme on dspace and when I use internet Explorer pages open 
with huge fond, with other browsers like firefox, Google Chrome I can view 
pages with the required font. I am having two copies of dspace the one on test 
server show well with internet explorer, I don't know if there is some where I 
need to configure this in my system.
