Hi George,

thanks for the report. Not a solution yet, but I was able to reproduce this on
demo.dspace.orghttp://demo.dspace.org:
http://screencast.com/t/WavlwEPNt

Search Advanced filters Title Contains Test Word. And it still gives you
Test Webpage as the first hit after applying the filter.

Is this the exact behaviour you wanted to report?

thanks,

If you search on Cornell University within, say, title. You get a lot of
titles without that exact phrase.

Is there a setting in one of the config files that is causing this, or is this
being caused by something else?

[Dspace-tech] Question about lists in DSpace 5.2 Mirage 2

2015-07-28 Thread George Stanley Kozak
So, we are using DSpace 5.2 (Mirage 2 XMLUI).
When in Admin mode and you want to change a group, or move an item or any
function that requires displaying a list of groups or users or collections, the
lists displayed are not ordered in any way. We have a LOT of collections and
groups and users and so the unordered lists are almost unmanageable.

Is there any plans to fix these lists so that they display in some order?

Thanks.

[Dspace-tech] Question about database values

2015-07-14 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Hi...

Back in DSpace 1.8.2, I executed a bunch of SQL queries to generate reports for
people at my site.
One of my reports relied on getting the name and description of a bitstream.
The report that I generated used this SQL query:
select bitstream_id,name,description,sequence_id,size_bytes from bitstream;
I see now in DSpace 5.2 that name and description are no longer part of
the bitstream table. Where are these values now held?
Also, is there a document out there that details the SQL changes in DSpace 5.2?
Thanks in advance.

I don't recall one, but the main idea is that metadata support moved
from Item to DSpaceObject, and then all extends DSpaceObject had
their interesting fields changed into metadata. I went and looked at
Bitstream.getName() to recall that that is now stored in dc.title.
What is left in the object tables is mainly internal bookkeeping stuff
like checksums.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about Browse By in DSpace 5.2

2015-07-06 Thread Tim Donohue

Hi George,

The bug described in DS-2602 definitely exists in 5.2. So, it's really
up to you and your users can live with it for a brief period of
time...or you can manually apply the Pull Request to your local
installation to fix it locally, if you want to upgrade to 5.2 but don't
want to experience this bug. Again, here's the fix:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/981

The 5.3 release is not yet scheduled, but the developers are actively
working on fixing several other minor bugs in 5.x. My hope is that 5.3
will be ready to release in the next few weeks. We are progressing
nicely on 5.3 at this point, but I cannot guarantee a particular release
date quite yet. The best I can do is say it should be out in July, and
hopefully in mid-July.

While 2602 describes this as clicking on a letter, it's actually
performing the same sort of jump to that would occur if you entered
something into the Starts with box and pressed Go.

I'm able to see this same general behavior on
http://demo.dspace.org/xmlui/ http://demo.dspace.org/xmlui/ . Either
clicking on a letter or entering something in the starts with box
don't function properly for Browse by Title or Browse by Issue
Date. But, it does still work for Browse by Authors and Browse by
Subjects (as far as I can see).

I can also see the same behavior in my local test instance.

However, if I (locally) apply the PR which fixes DS-2602, then
everything seems to work for me:

https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/981

We are planning to fix this DS-2602 in a DSpace 5.3 release coming
soon (hopefully in the next few weeks here). So, I *think* this will
fix the problems you are seeing in 5.2.

Is this the same thing you are seeing? Or am I misunderstanding the
issue here?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi George,

The bug described in DS-2602 definitely exists in 5.2. So, it's really up to
you and your users can live with it for a brief period of time...or you can
manually apply the Pull Request to your local installation to fix it locally,
if you want to upgrade to 5.2 but don't want to experience this bug. Again,
here's the fix: https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/981

The 5.3 release is not yet scheduled, but the developers are actively working
on fixing several other minor bugs in 5.x. My hope is that 5.3 will be ready
to release in the next few weeks. We are progressing nicely on 5.3 at this
point, but I cannot guarantee a particular release date quite yet. The best I
can do is say it should be out in July, and hopefully in mid-July.

Once you have migrated your embargos
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC5x/Embargo#Embargo-Pre-3.0EmbargoMigrationRoutine),
you should not need to run the embargo lifter.

The policy tables are the definitive place for controlling access.

I believe that the old embargo lifter would clear the embargo metadata fields
once the embargo is lifted. That action may no longer happen once you are
using the new embargo process.

[Dspace-tech] Question about Embargo

2015-06-22 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Hello:

This may be a dumb question, but I want to make sure that I understand the
difference between the DSpace 1.8.2 Embargo and the DSpace 5.2 Embargo.
In our DSpace 1.8.2 setup we created a metadata field called:
dc.description.embargo which we used to place the end date of the embargo. I
ran the embargo-lifter daily to check and clear out the embargoes (if any).

Do I still need to run the embargo-lifter daily in DSpace 5.2?

[Dspace-tech] Question Rest Javadoc

2015-06-15 Thread Paul Kloss
Hello everyone,

I have a little question on how to compile the Javadoc of the
Dspace-Rest-API.

The command mvn javadoc:javadoc (as described in
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC5x/REST+API) does not create the
commentaries from the classes in org.dspace.rest.

Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? :)

Sincerely yours

Paul Kloss

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question Rest Javadoc

2015-06-15 Thread helix84
Hi Paul,

there certainly is some JavaDoc for classes under org.dspace.rest in DSpace
5 as you can see here:
http://demo.dspace.org/javadocs/5/apidocs/

Perhaps you ran mvn javadoc:javadoc in ~/dspace-src/dspace-rest/ ? Try
running it in ~/dspace-src/ instead.

It's all in the resourcepolicy table.

So for bitstreams:

SELECT * FROM resourcepolicy WHERE resource_type_id = '0'

and for items (with item handle added):

SELECT handle.handle, resourcepolicy.*FROM resourcepolicy, handleWHERE
resourcepolicy.resource_type_id = '2'AND resourcepolicy.resource_id =

Hi George

Are you creating the reports using a daily script?
See: http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Daily_Admin/4.X

If so, then these reports are normally only available to a super-admin AFAIK.
I will add info to the statistics wiki page to clear up the confusion.

[Dspace-tech] Question about ORCID integration

2015-04-20 Thread euler
Dear All,

I am using DSpace 5.1 (Mirage 2). I have enabled ORCID integration in our
repository. I have the following settings in my dspace.cfg:

plugin.named.org.dspace.content.authority.ChoiceAuthority = \
org.dspace.content.authority.SHERPARoMEOPublisher = SRPublisher, \
org.dspace.content.authority.SHERPARoMEOJournalTitle = SRJournalTitle, \
org.dspace.content.authority.SolrAuthority = SolrAuthorAuthority

# Configuration settings for ORCID based authority control, uncomment the
lines below to enable configuration
solr.authority.server=http://localhost:8080/solr/authority
choices.plugin.dc.contributor.author = SolrAuthorAuthority
choices.presentation.dc.contributor.author = authorLookup
authority.controlled.dc.contributor.author = true

I also changed webui.browse.index.2 =
author:metadata:dc.contributor.*,dc.creator:text

into

webui.browse.index.2 = author:metadataAuthority:dc.contributor.author:text

My problem is that the authority values for authors are displayed in the
sidebar facets and browse by author pages. I thought the issue in DS-2401
https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-2401 was already fixed? Another
issue I've encountered is that the link to the ORCID was lost (ie I have
performed an author lookup and selected the one that have been retrieved
from ORCID). I have a scheduled task to run dspace index-discovery -b every
day, dspace index-authority and dspace dsrun
org.dspace.authority.UpdateAuthorities every 30 minutes. Did I miss
something? Please advise.

Thanks in advance and regards,
euler

Hi Luis,

Author profiles are not part of the out-of-the-box feature set of DSpace.
We are considering this feature for a future release of DSpace. In addition
to the Author Profiles that DSpace-CRIS would give you, that Andrea
mentioned, another implementation is:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/668

Keep in mind that an un-merged pull request is not considered an official
add-on, thus there won't be any support on it.

[Dspace-tech] Question of customization of Mirage2 with full text as an option for advanced filter

2014-12-17 Thread Ying Jin
Hi All,

I am trying to customize the Mirage 2 theme for our DSpace 3 and would like to
add full text search as one of the options for the advanced filter. However, I
can’t find any documentation about how to set it up. Could anyone give me a
clue how to do it? I tried to create a bean like this

bean id=searchFilterFulltext
class=org.dspace.discovery.configuration.DiscoverySearchFilter
property name=indexFieldName value=fulltext/
property name=field value=fulltext
list
valuefulltext/value
/list
/property
/bean

But it won’t work.

Thanks for any help!!!

Best,

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about metedata localizaton

2014-10-31 Thread Alex Dubiv
 Hi Helix84!
Thank you for quick reply!
I see there's no relatively  easy way to do it on our current 4.2
installation ))
After some more searching I found a thread of Kostas Stamatis  with similar
problem. , I've contacted with him and got reply:
*
Dear Alex,
as helix mentioned in his reply, the pull request shown in
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/660  was to be included in DSpace 5.0 but
we have cancelled the contribution because even if the code is working (as you
can see from the demos) we haven’t included all the cases so it is somehow
incomplete.

However, I think that in your case it suits very well. I also believe that even
if it is build on top of the master branch, you can apply the patch to DSpace
4.2 as well.

So, what you have to do actually is the following: go to
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pull/660/files  and see all the files that I
have changed in order to accomplish the functionality. Do the same changes to
your files, as well. The changes mention the line of code, but since it is
build on top of master and not on top of 4.2, these lines can be slightly
different. But do not expect radical changes.

After that go to  https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-2163  and download the
documentation to see how to configure the extension in order to achieve what
you want.

Hope it helps.
***

So I will try to patch 4.2 in order to get functionality today.
Thank you all for help!

Hi Alex,

you're raising valid concerns regarding localization. There was code
proposed to address that in DSpace 5 [1], unfortunately it was
postponed by the contributor for technical reasons, but we'll likely
see it reworked in DSpace 6. I also proposed an improvement to facets
which would include an ability to localize them (regardless of their
actual values, so that you could localize en_US to американський
англійський) in [2], but there is no implementation of that.

Apart from facets, it's desirable to localize Collection and Community
names. The foundation for this has been laid in DSpace 5 by [3], but
it's not yet represented in UI elements, to be addressed as the next
step.

In other words, we're slowly getting there. You can either wait for
DSpace 6 or chip in and submit a patch if you have Java skills.

[Dspace-tech] Question about metedata localizaton

2014-10-30 Thread Alex Dubiv
 Greetings!

I'm new in DSpace but trying to get deeper into it.
My name is Alex and I'm from Ukraine - I managed to localize almost all parts
of interface and forms of our Dspace installation.
But I have one critical question about data organization and translation.

In the input form of publication submission I've tried to extend the vocabolary
of dc:type metadata field (file input-forms_uk.xml) to add different types op
papers: Thesis of article, Full article, Report etc with their UA translations.
Then I've added in discovery.xml filters and facets configuration to that
type field. It's works great - in input form of submission I see Ukrainian
type names and facets are working really great.

BUT in facets and in search condition type VALUES are NOT translated - the are
original - english ((

What is the best solution to make facet values localized depending on chosen
interface language?
I suppose I can hard-code UA-translated values into forms - but this will
remove Dublin Core compatibility (I guess?..). In general it seems that I need
to create some additional metadata field (dc:type should I guess describe type
in sense of media: video, text, audio, presentation etc.)
At the end I need some kind of dc:publication_type which will describe
different types of text publications and they must be localized depending on
user language and be available in facets.

Thank you in advance!

2014-09-24 Thread George Stanley Kozak
David:

At Cornell University, we did the following:

1) In the dspace admin I went into Metadata Schema Registry and created a
new namespace: ETDSchema

2) In the Schema I added the following elements/qualifiers:

a. degree:discipline

b. degree:grantor

c. degree:level

d. degree:name

3) I made changes to the dspace.cfg (webui.itemdisplay.default) and
messages.properties so these would display on the item page. Our theses and
dissertations are batch loaded in so I made no changes to the input-forms.xml,
but I would have made changes to that if I wanted users to input that
information.

4) Then a did a re-index

It was pretty easy and painless. OAI picks these up OK.

Probably better to ask DCAT or at dspace-general about metadata standards.
From the technical point of view, assuming you added thesis.degree.name,
thesis.degree.level, thesis.degree.discipline, thesis.degree.grantor, you
can simply map them in your
[dspace]/config/crosswalks/oai/metadataFormats/oai_dc.xsl like this:

xsl:for-each
select=doc:metadata/doc:element[@name='thesis']/doc:element[@name='degree']/doc:element/doc:element/doc:field[@name='name']
dc:sourcexsl:value-of select=. //dc:source/xsl:for-each

Or analogously for any other OAI metadata format.

After that change in metadata fields, you need to do a full reindex
(index-init and update-discovery-index or both, depending on what you
use).
After the change in XSL, you should run [dspace]/bin/dspace oai import -c.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about implementation of SOLR

2014-07-07 Thread Tim Donohue
Hi Jonathan,

I suspect the reason is simply that we want the change in Solr to happen
*immediately* rather than waiting for the next autocommit.

By default, our Solr auto-commit settings are defaulted to 10,000 docs
or 10 seconds:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/master/dspace/solr/search/conf/solrconfig.xml#L370

If we waited on autocommit, there may be a chance that you could delete
a Community, and that Community would *still exist* for another 10
seconds in your browse screens before it disappeared.

Again, I don't know this all for certain (as I didn't write this area of
the code), but that'd be my best guess. Essentially we don't want users
to get confused by having objects still appear in Solr Browse/Search
results after being deleted. So, instead, we force the commit to happen
immediately (thus clearing it from Solr immediately).

If you can think of a better way to accomplish this same thing (or avoid
that warning), I'm sure we'd love tweaks/patches! Feel free to send us a
Pull Request if you have ideas of how to do this better.

Thanks,

Tim

[Dspace-tech] Question about Submission

Hi

In the licence step I want to introduce some changes like modifying the
text with my own description and giving the option of choosing the kind
of licence between two or three we offer. I know where to write the step
(../item-submission.xml) but I don't know where modify the options I
said.

I hope I explained myself...

Thank you!

Hello,

If your item-submission.xml states that you are using the CCLicenseStep
(processing-classorg.dspace.submit.step.CCLicenseStep/processing-class),
then you can exclude licenses from the list in the dspace.cfg via the
'cc.license.classfilter' setting.
I think for non-cc licenses you probably have to add/change Java code.

Best regards,
Anja

Thank you for your answer, I will try it!

So if I want to add a non-cc licence, where do I have to add the Java
class? I can't see in the wiki what are the Java files where everything
related with the submission process is defined.

And what about the text you can see on the licence step, where can I
change it?

Thank you again!

How do I fix this?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about importing CSV files in dspace

2014-04-09 Thread emilio lorenzo
We had a similar problem due to null values in the database in some
records... (Dspace 1.8) . The bulk import failed without any messge...
We use a fragmentation aproach to identify which record(s) was causing
the problem, just divide the csv into chunks... Fragment the csv into
pieces to detect the exact row (an the original item).
Once detected the problem we had to rewrite the item-update to cope
with the null values.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about update-discovery-index -r

2014-01-13 Thread Terry Brady
Ivan,

Your recommended solution looks simple and quick to me. I had not
considered issuing my own transactions against the SOLR service. Given the
simplicity of your recommendation, your recommendation seems preferable to
adding complexity to the command-line interface.

Looking at the command line help, the left side of the help is clear that
an item handle is recommended. Based on my experience with the
filter-media handle parameter, I presumed that passing a
collection/community handle to this command might trigger the re-processing
of the entire community/collection.

Here are a couple possible alternatives for the help text.

   - remove an Item from the index based on its handle
   - remove a solr document from the index based on its handle

Terry

Possibly an ID problem. You need to be the user DSpace (or whatever the
the DSpace user is and definitely not root)

Also check the permissions and ownership of on the
executable /dspace/bin/dspace so it is owned by DSpace and is executable
by its owner.

The import command needs a few parameters for example with either add,
replace, or remove.

Hi Terry,

it's entirely possible that it is so. Commits affect performance
heavily, so they are delayed whenever possible to run as many changes
in batch as reasonable using autocommit. You can see the default
values for DSpace here:

https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-3.1/dspace/solr/search/conf/solrconfig.xml#L299

If you want to force a commit manually, it's as easy as running:

curl http://localhost:8080/solr/search/update?stream.body=commit/

On both of these occasions, I had to force the re-index of my entire
 repository (update-discovery-index -f).

That shouldn't be necessary. Once the Solr document for a particular
handle is missing, update-discovery-index without the -f parameter
should add it, just as if it were a newly created item.

Let me know whether you got it working.

[Dspace-tech] Question About Modifying DSpace Submission Forms

2014-01-10 Thread Matthew Sherman
Hello all,

I am trying figure out if something is possible with the submission forms.
I know you just edit the XML to add new fields for metadata population, but
I was wondering if it was possible to have another optional file submission
field? I ask since where I work we also like to keep track documentation
telling us we have permission to post by uploading it to the record as a
file labelled as metadata in DSpace 1.8. Currently this can only be done
on the back end, but I would like to be able to make this a optional item
on the submission form so student workers helping to post files can add
this without needing administrator privileges or so I do not have to add it
after the fact. If anyone can provide advice into how to do this I would
really appreciate it. Thanks for everyone's time and any information that
can be provided. Have a good day.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about update-discovery-index -r

2014-01-10 Thread Terry Brady
Ivan,

Thank you for the additional details.

Today, with a bit more time and patience, I noticed that if I remove
individual items from the SOLR index, my facets do update appropriately.

The command line help was a bit misleading to me.

-r item handle remove an Item, Collection or Community from index
based on its handle

I presumed that I could remove the documents for an entire
community/collection in a single command.

Perhaps it would be useful to have a new command line option to force the
re-indexing of a specific community or collection. It might also be useful
to allow multiple items to be deleted in a single command. If this sounds
potentially useful to others, I will file an enhancement request.

Terry

[Dspace-tech] Question about update-discovery-index -r

2014-01-09 Thread Terry Brady
I have a question about the following option in update-discovery-index:

-r item handle remove an Item, Collection or Community from index
based on its handle

On two occasions, I have wanted to force the re-indexing of a specific
collection/community
(1) After customizing the facets for a specific collection
(2) After moving a collection from one community to another

If I run this command, the log file indicates that my item has been
removed, but I am unable to detect an impact caused by running this
option. Looking at IndexClient.java and SolrServiceImpl.java I notice that
the change is not committed in SOLR after it is made.

On both of these occasions, I had to force the re-index of my entire
repository (update-discovery-index -f).

Is it possible to accomplish what I am trying to achieve without rebuilding
the entire index? I am running DSpace 3.1.

Thanks, Terry

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about mod_jk, x-forwarded-for and IP-based authentication

2013-09-15 Thread helix84
Hi Elvi,

you're right that you need to configure your Apache to send the
X-Forwarded-For headers. Assuming that works on the Apache side, there
is one more modification you need to make on the DSpace side to make
DSpace look at the IP address in X-Forwarded-For rather than the
actual IP address (which in your case is always Apache's IP). You need
to set this in dspace.cfg:

useProxies = true

That should make not only IPAuthentication recognize the IP from
X-Forwarded-For, but also other parts of DSpace such as statistics.

[Dspace-tech] Question about mod_jk, x-forwarded-for and IP-based authentication

2013-09-12 Thread Nemiz, Elvi
Dear all,

We are using apache webserver as a front end for our dspace instance. I did
this using mod_jk. Now, our server is (may be) behind a firewall/proxy/load
balancer and it is forwarding its own local ip address instead of the
user's ip address. I tried implementing this (
http://www.techstacks.com/howto/log-client-ip-and-xforwardedfor-ip-in-apache.html)
in the virtualhost of our server's httpd.conf but I still get the local IP
address of the load-balancer/proxy upon checking the access logs. I can't
implement ip-based authentication if I can't get the real ip-address of the
user, right? Please advice what are the necessary steps to do to get the
user's ip address to enable ip-based authentication. Lastly, in
authentication-ip.cfg, what is the correct syntax for specifying ip range?
If for example our ip range is 203.xxx.xx.129 to 203.xxx.xx.142? I tried
using 203.xxx.xx.129/142 and I get Malformed *IP range* specified for group
error.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Elvi S. Nemiz

You seem to be trying to use CIDR notation. That doesn't directly
indicate the range; the number after the slash is the number of
leading one bits in the mask. So, 203.xxx.xx.129/142 is impossible,
as there are not 142 bits in an IPv4 address, and that isn't what you
meant anyway. You may need to figure out a set of masked addresses,
of which the union is the entire set of addresses that you permit.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 203.xxx.xx.129 to
203.xxx.xx.142. Are the xxx and xx don't care bits?

If the permitted set is very small, you could just specify each
address individually.

Hi Rodrigo,

it sounds just like the More like this feature of Solr (added in
DSpace 3, so maybe @mire backported it for you). It doesn't track who
visited what, but it performs an analysis of metadata fields
similarity of the current items with all other items in your
repository.

I'm fairly sure More like this is what you have, but there's also
the Ex Libris Bx service for scholarly articles which does work on the
base of what articles others visited - outside your repository.

[Dspace-tech] Question about Users who visited this item also visited...

2013-09-09 Thread Calloni, Rodrigo
Hello

We are in DSpace 1.8 XMLUI

In our UI we have a box named Users who visited this item also visited...
which shows in the item display. The box is similar to that Amazon feature,
users bought this also bought that.

I wonder if this is a standard DSpace feature.

If yes, can someone explain me the logic behind the feature? For example, it
seems strange that an item that was just archived already shows items there.

Best regards
Rodrigo

Well, the only other thing I can think of is some error in
configuration. How did you upgrade your configuration to 3.x? Did you
take your old one and add new things or did you take the new one and
add all your local changes? I'd recommend the second approach.

You can try the feature out on our demo server:

Well, the only other thing I can think of is some error in
configuration. How did you upgrade your configuration to 3.x? Did you
take your old one and add new things or did you take the new one and
add all your local changes? I'd recommend the second approach.

You can try the feature out on our demo server:

I thought it would be enough to get it to work.

1) Try running update-discovery-index -b and test again
2) If it still doesn't work, connect to Solr [1] and use Schema
Browser to check whether the search index contains _hl fields, e.g.
DC.TITLE_HL, FULLTEXT_HL.

[Dspace-tech] Question about search highlighting in DSpace 3.2

2013-08-20 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Hi...

I am using DSpace 3.2 (XMLUI with modified Mirage interface). We are testing
it in preparation to migrate to production (Our production is currently DSpace
1.8.2 JSPUI).

I have been testing the search snippets, so that I can explain this new
feature to our users, but I do not seem to be getting the search highlighting
(ie., search term highlighted in the snippet).
I assume that I am doing something wrong. Can someone direct me where I should
look (ie. Config file?).

[Dspace-tech] Question about DSpace 3.2 Authentication

2013-08-20 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Hello:

I just encountered another problem with our DSPace 3.2 (XMLUI Mirage themed
installation).
I have the authentication (config/modules/authentication.cfg) setup as follows:

plugin.sequence.org.dspace.authenticate.AuthenticationMethod = \
org.dspace.authenticate.IPAuthentication, \
org.dspace.authenticate.PasswordAuthentication

However, when I attempt to login, I see:
No Authentication Method Found

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi George,

there is no need to configure anything, although you can customize it
once you get it working. The two things that may be preventing you
from seeing highlighting are:
1) Did you reindex when upgrading? Run update-discovery-index -f to make sure.
2) Did you customize your theme? If you did, some updates are
necessary, check the updates Mirage received. To verify that this is
not the problem, test with Mirage.

Try typing it on a single line:

You don't have to run Maven on the target machine, maven is run on the
building machine and produces the wars.

Technically, it's possible to do everything that Ant does manually.
Just look at this file what ant actually does, it mostly just copies
files around:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-3.1/dspace/src/main/config/build.xml

Here's a brief overview of what ant does:
* copies webapps to installation directory
* copies /lib, /bin, /etc and /solr (configuration, not data) to
installation directory, backing up the old ones
* filters configuration (replaces ${placeholders} with actual values),
copies it over (including the GeoLite database) and optionally
replaces old configuration
* creates/drops the database (not used during ant update)

It's convenient (and officially recommended) to use ant during
upgrades, but when you're just rebuilding and need to redeploy only
the webapps, you can do it even without ant.

Of course we have to have our dspace.cfg file configured for Production,
but are there any other files that will need to be edited once they're copied
 over to Production?

Not really, no.

There's Tomcat configuration (including Context definitions) but you
do that only once.

Just take care not to lose the Solr statistics core data (if you're
using Solr statistics) because that information is not stored anywhere
else. Same goes for ElasticSearch statistics. Also your old logs
(dspace.log.*) contain old usage events, which can be converted and
imported to Solr or ES.

I might not have fully answered your question, so here's the rest:

Keep in mind, that maven runs from [dspace-source], i.e. on the
building machine.

Normally, would run ant update from the
[dspace-source]/target/dspace-[version]-build/ directory, also on the
building machine. So if you copy over just /webapps, there's no way
how you can run ant on the production machine. You'd have to copy
[dspace-source]/target/dspace-[version]-build/ to production to be
able to run ant there.

One of the alternatives would be to run ant update on the build
machine and then copy the whole [dspace] directory to production. Like
I said, ant just copies things around, so just try to understand what
you need (all the directories under [dspace]) and remember you can
copy it over even manually.

I hope that makes sense.

Hi Sue,

I'm not an expert in this, so I'll leave someone else answer it:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3906881/advantages-disadvantages-to-exploded-wars

My personal point of view:

With WARs, Tomcat would detect when you deleted/updated the WAR and
undeploy/redeploy it.
With the new recommended approach, where you configure Contexts in individual
context fragments (.xml files), you can simply delete/touch the context
fragment.

 2. We are modifying the structure of our new DSpace sites, to
include a separate PostgreSQL server and not having the DSpace source
code on the Production server. The SAs have asked me to find out:

 a. If we can deploy DSpace 3.1 with a .war file that can just be
copied over from the Dev machine once we’re ready to go to Production?

The webapps (whether WARs or exploded) will be the same.

Note the difference in configuration: You only need to change dspace.hostname
and possibly dspace.baseUrl and dspace.url.

Then there are also other directories in [dspace], but after the upgrade, if
you're only redeploying changed code, you most likely don't need to change
anything there. For the upgrade itself, all the changes to these directories
will be covered in the upgrading docs.

 b. Are there any other ways of doing this so the DSpace source code
is NOT on the Production server?

Sure, you could actually use the binary distribution and never touch the actual
source code. You still need to do mvn package, though, to create the webapps.
Once you've upgraded and you only want to redeploy changed webapps from dev to
production, you could skip the ant step and just copy over the webapps manually.

I hope this answers your questions, let me know if it doesn't. In some parts I
felt like I could go into more detail but I didn't want to flood you with too
much information.

 1. Why don't we deploy the .war file like we used to? Why the change,

Good questions. I'm looking forward to the answers. :-)

what's the difference in doing it this way, and are there any benefits?

Implementation dependent. A servlet container could treat the WAR as
a compressed virtual filesystem containing files and compressed
virtual filesystems (JARs), and navigate this structure on the fly, or
it could just unpack the WAR into a scratch directory at deployment.
IIRC Tomcat does the latter unless you configure it to do the former.
So the tradeoff seems to be convenience (one WAR to deliver to
production) vs. deployment time and/or additional storage for the
unpacked contents.

 2. We are modifying the structure of our new DSpace sites, to include a

WARs can still be produced, but it's not the default behavior. Run
ant with -Dwars=true if you want them.

 b. Are there any other ways of doing this so the DSpace source code is
 NOT on the Production server?

If you want to run production with unpacked webapp.s: install to a
scratch directory on Dev, archive the [DSpace]/webapps directory, copy
the archive over, unpack. But the simplest way might be to produce
the WARs, copy them over to production, and unpack manually instead of
letting the container do it.

I would probably build the WARs, copy to production, and let the
container do what it's configured to do. (In our shop I'd also be
configuring the container, so I may not be the best example.)

All this only treats the webapp.s. If you want the commandline tools
on the production machine, you'd need to update [DSpace]/bin and
[DSpace]/lib. But, come to think of it, there's no reason that they
*must* be on that host.

Hi Sue

This is how we deploy:
http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Install_Dspace/S08
And after reading: http://wiki.lib.sun.ac.za/index.php/SUNScholar/Dspace, I
think your SA's will have a better understanding.

Hi Sue,

I'm not an expert in this, so I'll leave someone else answer it:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3906881/advantages-disadvantages-to-exploded-wars

My personal point of view:

With WARs, Tomcat would detect when you deleted/updated the WAR and
undeploy/redeploy it.
With the new recommended approach, where you configure Contexts in
individual context fragments (.xml files), you can simply delete/touch
the context fragment.

 2. We are modifying the structure of our new DSpace sites, to
include a separate PostgreSQL server and not having the DSpace source code
on the Production server. The SAs have asked me to find out:

 a. If we can deploy DSpace 3.1 with a .war file that can just be
copied over from the Dev machine once we’re ready to go to Production?

The webapps (whether WARs or exploded) will be the same.

Note the difference in configuration: You only need to change
dspace.hostname and possibly dspace.baseUrl and dspace.url.

Then there are also other directories in [dspace], but after the
upgrade, if you're only redeploying changed code, you most likely
don't need to change anything there. For the upgrade itself, all the
changes to these directories will be covered in the upgrading docs.

 b. Are there any other ways of doing this so the DSpace source code
is NOT on the Production server?

Sure, you could actually use the binary distribution and never touch
the actual source code. You still need to do mvn package, though, to
create the webapps. Once you've upgraded and you only want to redeploy
changed webapps from dev to production, you could skip the ant step
and just copy over the webapps manually.

I hope this answers your questions, let me know if it doesn't. In some
parts I felt like I could go into more detail but I didn't want to
flood you with too much information.

Interesting idea. But how would you update the index?

Good point. Some of the commandline tools must have access to the
assetstore and (depending on the search implementation you choose)
perhaps the index directory. This probably isn't worth much thought
unless you really need to segregate the tools from the app.s for some
reason.

[Dspace-tech] Question on new feature in DSpace version 3.1 - Type-based submissions (show or hide submission fields based on type of content)

2013-07-05 Thread Thornton, Susan M. (LARC-B702)[LITES]

Hi,
I have a question about one of the New features and Improvements listed
for DSpace version 3.1:

Type-based
submissionshttps://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/Submission+User+Interface#SubmissionUserInterface-ItemtypeBasedMetadataCollection
(show or hide submission fields based on type of content)

Way back in at least version 1.5, we had the capability to customize input
screens in the online submission process (which we did) based on the collection
to which the Item was being added. Can someone tell me what the difference is
between the old capability and this new one?

Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Sue

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question on new feature in DSpace version 3.1 - Type-based submissions (show or hide submission fields based on type of content)

2013-07-05 Thread emilio lorenzo

the difference is that now you can use
only a form for several input types (or whatever metadata
you use to control the behaviour). In pre-3.1 versions you defined
N forms for each variation of the form and then assign
that individual form to a single collection, The consequence: you
need to defined n collection for n Types ot forms... (i.e. one for
articles, other for conferenceObjects, other for Thesis). Now you
only define one collection and control the form with a set of
  initial questions...
  Its useful in some circumstances

Re: [Dspace-tech] Question about moving a collection from one community to another

2013-06-17 Thread Terry Brady
Claudia,

Thank you for your advice on this question.

Would it be sufficient to run index-update rather than index-init after
updating the community2collection table?

I would like to permit my users to run this command without halting the
application server.

It is my understanding that index-init should be run while the application
server is suspended.

Thanks, Terry

 Hello Terry,

then you got to fallback to manipulating the database directly (usually
 warning about backup etc.)

If e.g. you want to move the collection with id 34 from community id 1
to community id 7 you got to run:

 update community2collection set community_id=7 where community_id=1 and
 collection_id=34;

The run index-init and oai import.

 Hope this helps

  Hi Terry,

I'd look into using AIP import/export of a whole subtree. I know, it's
more invasive than flipping a pointer somewhere as
community-filiator does, but it's well documented (not that there
would be any caveats in SQL). So here's how you can export a
  collection:

 https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC3x/AIP+Backup+and+Restore#AIPBackupandRestore-ExportingAIPHierarchy

Then you'd need to delete it and import it using the restore mode
(-r) with a new parent community (-p). Make sure you try this to get
familiar with it, e.g. on demo.dspace.org before you do it in
  production.

Hi Terry,

I don't think you need to update the Lucene index at all, because you
didn't actually change any item metadata. But I'm not 100% sure.

If you're using Discovery, then you do need to run
update-discovery-index - the Solr index used by Discovery does store
relations.

It is my understanding that index-init should be run while the application
 server is suspended.

That's true. index-init must be done while Tomcat is down.
index-update and update-discovery-index are done while Tomcat is
running.
