let me know what configuration you would like to test this with and I can

What do you mean by afraid? There are too many different programs

Ah, thanks for that info. The open-source patch for dvds doesn't contain

Well actually i'm also interested to see if the Sony DRU-500A (the atapi

Yes i'm afraid so ...

With cdrecord-ossdvd, -load, -eject, blank=fast are working fine. -toc
works if the disk has something on it, it gives a scsi error otherwise:

cdrecord-ossdvd: Input/output error. read toc: scsi sendcmd: no error

   cdrecord-ossdvd: Cannot read TOC/PMA

In some (all?) cases cdrecord-prodvd gives a scsi error too for -toc on
 a blank disk.

There are other downsides to cdrecord-ossdvd. -atip doesn't ever seem
to show anything useful. Writing in TAO (i.e. default) mode failed:

   Supported modes: PACKET SAO
   Drive buf size : 4718592 = 4608 KB
   FIFO size : 4194304 = 4096 KB
cdrecord-ossdvd: Drive does not support TAO recording.
cdrecord-ossdvd: Illegal write mode for this drive.

This appears to be nonsense, as cdrecord-prodvd says:

Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96R RAW/R96R
   Drive buf size : 4718592 = 4608 KB

Writing to a blanked DVD-RW fails with:

   cdrecord-ossdvd dev=0,0,0 speed=1 -data -dao -v /data/tmp/diskimg

speed=1 doesn't work, to put it better, the speed= command is not
implemented. All parameters are adjusted at insertion of your DVD-R(W)

 As far as I know,
dvd+rw-tools works under only Linux and Solaris.

It's just had patches incorporated to make it work natively under FreeBSD as
well.

I don't think from this fragment of SCSI I/O one can derive anything

if it's 2.0c you need to upgrade. The latest firmware is available from

 http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/drx500ulxdwn.htm
(scroll down to Firmware Upgrade 2.0F)

Has anyone successfully managed to install this under Linux? How?

Otherwise it may be safer to use a windows box to do the firmware
 upgrade.

As for getting the drive recognised, with any Linux distribution worth
using this is fully automatic. You plug it in, the computer beeps a
couple of times, you may need to run rescan_scsi_bus.sh (as root, you do
for ieee1394), and you can see the drive in /proc/scsi/scsi. I only have
a USB1.1 to test this with but cdrecord worked fine (execept for writing
which I didn't attempt). I can't remember which modules were loaded by
the hotplug system, the usual uhci and scsi stuff. SuSE 8.2, kernel
2.4.20 (SuSE does apply many patches to their kernels).

2003-06-23 Thread Jay Berkenbilt

Unless I'm mistaken, dvdrtools still doesn't support the DRU500A or
DRU500AX. Maybe it doesn't support the ULX either. Have you tried
dvd+rw-tools? In spite of the name, you can burn DVD-R and -RW discs
with it. I have burned many -R and -RW discs (as well as +R and +RW
discs) with my DRU500A using these tools. Of course, the DRU500A is
an internal IDE drive, but I hear from sources of unknown reliability
that the DRU500ULX is supposed to work under Linux. As far as I know,
dvd+rw-tools works under only Linux and Solaris. I bet cdrecord-ProDVD
probably works this drive, though this is based only on the fact that
it has historically worked with a much wider range of hardware than
dvdrtools or cdrecord + dvd patch.

For dvd+rw-tools, check out http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/

dvdrecord uses the

mmc_mdvdgeneric SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver

to burn DVD-R's . So it needs a scsi layer and a sg layer or just libschilly.
So one would need a usb2-scsi layer to get that functionality.

There's hpusbscsi.o as a driver. I dunno how its done in this case .
Does one first have a usb2-ide driver loaded and next load the ide-scsi
driver?

check withs lsmod whats loaded ?
