It sounds like your DX4WIN.CFG file is being corrupted during the
shutdown. Set your Microsoft updates to download ONLY, but don't
update until you choose to (it's one of the options). You'll get a
reminder icon in the system tray (bottom right) telling you there are
new updates. You can then shut down DX4WIN cleanly, perform the
update, then re-start DX4WIN after rebooting (if required).

I have been updating Windows this way and my computer has NEVER
spontaneously rebooted, unless we had an extended power outage where
the UPS shut things down.

Next time this happens, shut down DX4WIN and delete your DX4WIN.CFG
file. After you restart DX4WIN, go to File | Preferences then File |
Merge INI file (you do have a .INI file with your saved preferences,
don't you?). This should recover you without having to reinstall.

Re: [Dx4win] Strange Occurrence - Help Needed

2011-08-26 Thread ve2dc
Destroyed configuration file. Delete it and restore your settings from the .ini
file I hope you created at some point.
Regarding skins... don't use them, they are buggy.
Regarding Microsoft restarting your computer. If you leave DX4Win running
continuously you MUST configure Microsoft Updates to notify only, not do the
install automatically. That way you can shut down DX4Win before running the
update.
It's not a good idea to leave DX4Win running if you don't use a UPS.

Real strange Gary. I don't think dx4win is responsible for
 rebooting. Maybe
some cfg file is corrupted because of rebooting and this is why
 dx4win shows
this behaviour. Just an additional thought: Do you use any of
 the skins in
 dx4win (filespreferencesscreen)?

This has happened at least twice before to me. DX4Win is fully
 installed
  and
  performing just fine, then...

I walk in and find that my computer has been rebooted, most probably
Microsoft Windows has forced it to shut down. I let this
 computer run 24/7
otherwise so the only shut downs are those forced by Microsoft.

Dell Optiplex GX770 running XP, SP3

I start DX4WIN and EVERYTHING ABOUT IT HAS CHANGED.

The fonts are different (Ariel font which I hate), and appear
 too big. The
windows are different sizes and the QSO/log window is much
 bigger than it
was. The LAT/LON is wrong and has defaulted to somewhere else.
 I can reset
some of the parameters and I can get it to connect to the
 cluster.
  However,
the cluster spots load but all the calls seem to be grayed-
 out. There are
  no
colors showing stations that I still need and those that I
 have confirmed
etc. I can open the CW keyboard window and it will key my
 WinKey but the
COMM port has to be reset. I cannot change any of the screen
 fonts and
everything looks strange. If I try to see the Country box
 (showing the
bands and modes that I need for the country), I get an error
 that says:
  An
exception occurred !! Fixed column count must be less
 than column count
and I get a small box with a red X in one corner.

I swear that this happens about every 6 months (the fact that
 DX4WIN seems
to go through this process of resetting) since I upgraded to
 Version 8.5

The two prior times that this has occurred, I could never get
 it fixed
  until
I downloaded a new copy of DX4Win from the homepage and then
 it installs
  OK.
This time, I downloaded a new copy and it comes up exactly the
 same as
  before.. No change.

  I'm completely baffled..Any ideas?

[Dx4win] INFO: using HamCall.net for address lookups

2011-08-26 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
If you want to use HamCall.net for address lookups instead of QRZ (by
typing ENTER in the Callsign/mgr lookup (F3), window), open your
Preferences and select the Ext Data tab. At the bottom, where it
says Website callsign lookup, put this text into BOTH fields:

http://hamcall.net/call?callsign=

Then save your preferences and exit.

[Dx4win] Recognizing 2 meters on K3

2011-08-26 Thread Richard Allardyce

I purchased an Elecraft K3 with an internal 2 meter transverter recently, but
when I click on a 2 meter spot I get a Bad frequency for radio message. I've
tried several transverter offsets', but still not working. Is anyone able to
pick up 144 MHz spots and get immediate QSY to 2 meters with a K3?

Thanks,
Dick

Look under Preferences, then Station. Do you have 144MHz
checked/enabled?

[Dx4win] Custom Award Values from ADIF file

2011-08-26 Thread Mark K3MSB
I have my ADIF file from the RDA contest last weekend.

When importing into DX4WIN, I'd like to have it automagically populate the
Custom Award and Custom Award Values for the RDA contest.

Is that possible? I can import into Excel, add fields, then export back
so adding to the ADIF file isn't a problem.

Thanks
