very bottom of the report. There are a bunch of weird characters in the St
field and the State name field on this last row. Then there are Cs in the
boxes for Mix, Pho, CW, Dig, 80 and 40. When I try to click on one of the
Cs, there is an error message that says "No Matching QSO Found". Once I
click OK to remove the error message, I get a blank QSO window except for
the State field which is filled in with the letters SL. The S is red and
the L is black. If I try to hit F2 and do a search for SL in the State
field, I get nothing.

It is apparent that there is a corrupted QSO in the database, but the
question is how do I find it and delete it? Any ideas would be appreciated.

[Dx4win] Slow start when opening DX4WIN (Win10)

2017-10-17 Thread Barry
Got a new computer recently and I notice that when I click the DX4WIN
icon, it takes 3-4 seconds before the program comes up.  This is a fast
computer (i7-7700K 4.2 GHz 16GB RAM) and the 150K QSO log loads in a
fraction of a second (much faster than last system), once the program is
up, but I'm wondering why it takes so long to start. My previous
computer was a Win7 machine, and the program came up quicker.  Is this a
Win10 thing or is there some setting I need to tweak?

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW report question

Mystery solved!

11 of the 12 QSOs in question were for PJ2/W2UP. Apparently LOTW lumps
them together, but I have a separate log for that operation.

1 of the 12 QSOs, S55W from 2004, was just recently uploaded by him.
He had the mode as Phone, not SSB. I presume that mismatch is a problem
in DX4WIN.

Um, no. YOU uploaded a QSO for that day. Who you QSOd with ALSO
uploaded a QSO for that contact. It matched, and generated a QSL.
Someone else saying that they worked you never shows up in your LoTW
downloads.

Please check again.

(It's quite possible for this to happen if your computer has been
compromised, but if that's the case then the DXCC desk needs to mark
all of your QSOs as invalid and ineligible for DXCC until you clear
this up.)

Occam's Razor says these are QSOs you made, uploaded, and are now

Subject: [RTTY] 2016 Digital Mode Most Wanted Survey

All digital operators are invited to participate in the 2016 Digital Mode
Most Wanted Survey. Previously known as the "RTTY Most Needed DXCC Entities
Survey" in 2002, 2005 and 2011, the name has been changed to reflect current
times and to be more in line with the Digital DXCC award.

Several entities at the top of the 2011 list have been active recently, so
now is a good time to find out what's needed on the digital modes. The
survey can be found here:

http://survey.hamdocs.com/index.php/468764

Please be sure to read the "How to use the 2016 Digital Mode DX Most Wanted
Survey" at the top of the page. The survey will only be available for two
weeks and will close at 2359Z on Friday, May 13, 2016. So don't delay,
please complete the survey promptly. It is our hope to have the results
available before the Dayton Hamvention. It's very important that every
digital operator take part in the survey in order to achieve the most
accurate results possible. These surveys help DXpedition planners and are of
interest to all digital operators. Feel free to forward this invitation to
other groups.

A new feature has been added to this year's survey. It's now possible to
work on the survey, take a break from it and resume it later. You don't have
to complete the survey all at one time. There is a button at the very end of
the survey that says "Resume Later". Clicking this option will bring you to
a page that asks for your name, a password and email address. Email will be
sent to you with a link that will bring you back to the survey you were
working on. Or you can resume the survey using your password.

Thank you for your participation!

[Dx4win] Next pproblem with ADI file

2014-12-07 Thread Barry
OK, I found the missing 15m QSO. As I only have 2 needed countries on
15m, it wasn't hard to find it, going through the Clublog DXCC matrix
for my log. Seems that a QSO from SV2ASP/A from 5/2014 is missing from
my Clublog log, but is in my LOTW log. Unless I forgot to upload the
ADI file containing the QSO to Clublog, even though I did upload it to
LOTW, I don't understand why it's missing.

Sooo, following Cesar's suggestion, I thought I'd re-upload my entire
log to Clublog. I set the LOTW upload flag and in DX4WIN says it set
~139K flags. When I click Export to LOTW, and the ADI file is written,
it only writes about 125K QSOs. Looking at the file in MSWord, it's
truncated in 2012. Any idea why that would happen? Does DX4WIN have a
file size limitation when writing an ADI file?

Tnx,

My last few Clublog submissions have been clean, other than some zone

It would be helpful if people could upload their logs to Club Log in
order to run a sanity check on the DX4WIN country file.

 https://secure.clublog.org/index.php

From DX4WIN, choose File | Import/Export. After the Import/Export
Filters window pops up, make sure the first line (ADIF) is selected,
then File | Export. Give the exported ADIF file a name you can
remember.

Then log into Club Log and choose the Upload link at the top. Upload
the file you just created from DX4WIN. You will get the choice
whether to merge or overwrite (replace) your existing data. Choose
the latter (overwrite/replace), then all your confirmed QSOs will be
updated in Club Log as well.

Club Log will email back a report, noting any country file
differences. You can just forward that message to me, and I'll look
over the differences.

PY2YP already did this, and we identified at least three errors in the
DX4WIN country file.

Thanks 73 - Jim AD1C

DX4Win has been motionless in respect to program improvements for
many years
now, probably six or seven. The update from v7 to v8 was pretty much
useless

as the digital inclusion never was successful.

I moved from WJ2O in 2004, when DX4Win was pretty much state of the
art, at
least in terms of amateur radio logging programs, and have watched it
remain
more or less motionless while a number of other programs simply
passed it in

terms of output. Or, at least, so I am told.

At this stage, the only reason I don't move is that the two or three
programs that are 'allegedly' at the top of the programming tree are so
complex, and do so many things that I am not the slightest bit
interested
in, and take so much computer management skills and time that I
cannot be

bothered.

DX4Win has peaked - if you want to have your logger do smarter
things, you
are going to have to move programs. Simple as that. Do I kike the
situation
- not really, but like the great majority of us, nought I can do
about it.

My view.

Re: [Dx4win] Updates

2014-01-05 Thread Barry

Well said, Lou.

I am another early adopter of DX4WIN, from back in the early days of
Windows (3.1?) I started with DXLOG (for DOS) and after a number of
empty promises of a Win version from its developer (who lived 5 miles
from me at the time), I switched to DX4WIN.

There are things DX4WIN could do better and more efficiently. The only
reason I'm still with it is I don't actively chase awards or (paper)
QSLs any more. If I did, I would have jumped ship a number of years
ago. And if it weren't for AD1C's generous support, I don't believe
there would be many users left today.

DX4Win started as a logging program as I recall. Operating was up to
the person who had the amateur license; logging the QSO'S that
resulted from the operating was the job of the program.

Over time the intellectual property owner has chosen to add
features and present new Versions for sale. Some of the added
features happen to relate to operating things rather than logging of
QSO's.

As purchasers and users all we can properly expect is that the
features declared to be in the Version we purchased work as they are
defined to work for the equipment environment for which they are
declared to be functional. That implies that new radios , new
rotators or new COM to USB devices are not explicitly supported. If
the IP owner chooses to modify the Version to expand the supported
equipment environment, great. The same thing is true for
logging/operating features. If the IP owner chooses to add them, fine.

It seems a bit unreasonable to use the product user reflector to
'bad mouth' the IP owner.

Of course there is nothing wrong with making suggestions that the
product planner can consider when ( and if ) a new product or new
version is being planned. Commenting on what you wish was present or
even identifying an alternate product that has a feature you 'wish'
was present seems reasonable.

Building a list of features that users wish were present seems
reasonable too; particularly if maintenance of such a listing is not
expected to be the job of the IP owner. It would be even nicer if
someone had that list on a web site so it could be referenced by
people. That might reduce duplicate postings about certain not
present yet features.

Now I'm wondering if I have to create a separate log for these Qs for uploading

Re: [Dx4win] operating CW from keyboard and keyer without unplugging

Ed,
I'm not Jim, but I've paralleled my keyer output and serial port
computer-generated CW for many years. Just make sure your keyer has an
isolated output, i.e., a relay (reed or solid state) rather than keying
directly via a transistor output.

Using DX4WIN, is it possible to operate CW from a keyboard with a serial port
connection between the computer and the transceiver and then parallel the
output of a keyer (Heathkit uMatic Keyer) with the cable from the serial port
in the plug that goes into the CW jack on a Kenwood TS--850?

What I am trying to accomplish is to be able to operate CW from a keyboard OR a
paddle/keyer without having to unplug one and plug in the other.

Thanks for your advice.

Re: [Dx4win] CW Announcements

2012-06-03 Thread Barry
I replaced an XP laptop with a Win7 laptop recently (both Dell). I
noticed that the CW audio from RUFZ and Morserunner is less loud now,
even with headphones, and if I push the gain slider up too far, it gets
distorted.

On another note, I've always used voice announcements in DX4WIN for
announcements, however, lately it seems to be more of an annoyance than
help due to some guys feeling the need to announce when they don't hear
someone, or thinking a DXpedition will stop what they're doing and QSY
to a specific band/mode based on their DX spot/plea for it.

A nice feature would be a way to limit repetitive voice and CW
announcements for the same station.

I'm using WIN7 Home Premium, so there are likely a few differences, but I
wonder if using a speaker (with its own volume control) attached to the

[Dx4win] Country count after adding FJ

2007-12-27 Thread Barry
Adding a new country to a program whose primary purpose is DX tracking
SHOULD be a simple task. Judging by the number of posts over the last
few weeks, this obviously is not the case.

Perhaps the next DX4WIN upgrade should simplify the process - maybe even
an Add New Country Wizard.

73,
Barry W2UP (still running V4.x because even updating versions isn't
simple, creating new program directories, etc.)

Doug Joyce wrote:
 I'm running Ver 7.03.16

After adding FJ to the database, another thing to check is your country
count including the Deleted. I have confirmed 337 Current and 10 Deleted
for a total of 347. After I added FJ to the database (but before working
FJ), the count increased to 348 and the program had taken about 60 or 70
QSOs with the USA (K prefix) and reassigned the prefix to the Deleted
country Netherlands New Guinea (JZO), which is not one of the 10 I have
credit for. (So the Deleted credits had increased from 10 to 11).

I manually revised the prefix from JZ0 back to K and the country count is
now back to normal. I don't track US counties so can't provide any
information on whether the US QSOs that were corrected changed re the
state or county and I haven't done any comparisons with a BU prior to the FJ
 addition.

Hope this will help Paul get to the bottom of what may have caused the
 problem.

 Seasons Greetings to all

[Dx4win] Wrong mode in QSO window

I just transferred my DX4WIN files over to a new computer, as the old one is

double-clicking on packet spots QSYs the radio correctly, however mode info is
wrong. For example, I'm on 30m CW or 14012 CW and the mode in the DX4WIN QSO

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 6.03

2004-05-11 Thread Barry
How come after every program update, there are days upon days of
questions, problems, etc? Shouldn't an update be relatively
seamless? It should archive what is necessary and then replace what
needs to be replaced, with options along the way, if necessary. It
shouldn't create new program folders every time (does it still do
that?) Though a great program, DX4WIN is probably the most difficult
one to upgrade, requiring prayer to assure one's country totals and

[Dx4win] Help LoTW import modes

 1. I have 22 QSOs labeled as being in RTTY mode by DX4WIN. RTTY appears as
the mode in the mode box and as the mode:n entry in the ADIF. However, in
the comments box, there is an error about MODE=PTOR. I think this indicates
an import error from when I imported an old log, and it was really a Pactor
QSO that was changed to the RTTY mode during import. I guess I will have to
manually change those 22 Qs to mode:6PACTOR - agree?

Yes, but let the computer do the work for you. Generate an ADIF file
with just those QSOs using a filtered search in DX4WIN. Then, open
the file in Wordpad and do a Find and Replace to make the changes.

 2. However, the TQSL signing process seems to be detecting the error entry
as another mode error. I get a signing error about the PTOR mode being
invalid - But that QSO's mode is listied as RTTY - PTOR only appears in the
ERROR line of the ADIF generated by DX4WIN.

I guess the solution is change the 22 entries to PACTOR mode manually and
then also delete the error line.

Anyone disagree with this plan? With any luck, that will be the end of the
mode confusions and I will be uploading 14,539 WA9ALS Qs soon. If this
seems to work, I will get the VP5RY log up soon too. Thanks! 73 - John,

Delete the error line also with Find and Replace, just replacing with

[Dx4win] More LOTW info

I am in the process of using TQSL to convert the logs for upload for
LOTW. TQSL also includes a date range filter, so you can exclude QSOs
from before and after specified dates from the ADIF or Cabrillo file,
if you didn't do it in your export from DX4WIN.

Another note - warning of sorts: TQSL is VERY slow. My machine is a
Dell P4 2.2 Ghz and it's converting at about 20 QSOs/second. The
current selection I'm converting contains 82K QSOs, so it's going to
be a while. If you have a big log and/or a slow computer, you may

In the past, I have usually handled this by printing 25 sheets at a time,
but it would surely be nice to have the software tell me not only how many
QSOs it intends to print, but also how many labels will be required, given
the current label definition. I believe BV does this -- could DX4WIN be

[Dx4win] Clock error

2002-10-25 Thread Barry
Pete,
The way you can tell if it's software bogging down the system vs.
hardware/battery is this:
Just before turning off the computer for the night, update the clock.
Next day, first thing when you turn it on, check the time. Is it
accurate? If so, it's not the battery.

There are multiple clocks in the computer. The main clock is
hardware. The software clock accesses this info when you first turn
the computer on. Windows (on the task bar) and most software then
access one of the software clocks. One of my computers has this
problem, where some software bogs down the clock and it can be off by
minutes in a matter of hours. My solution was to use one of the
Internet time setting programs (Tardis, etc.) and have it reset the
clock every 15 minutes. If you are using WinXP, the Internet polling
of the time signal is built in and I believe defaults to every 3
hours. There are ways to make this more frequent, though there's no
setting within XP. You have to use an external program that changes a
registry setting (no, I don't know what it is, offhand).

Control Panel and turn off Sounds, then click Apply. See if that
does the trick.

 Greetings all;

PSK31 feature in DX4WIN. I have had a problem where by the PSK31
display would freeze up when trying to transmit. The odd thing about
it would be that I'd transmit a few times successfully, then about the
3rd or 4th transmit, the rig would be in TRANSMIT mode and the
waterfall display and spectrum display would freeze up. If I close
the PSK31 display, then reopen it, I would get the following error:

Error starting soundcard. Device already started.

Once I clicked on TX twice, I found that closing the PSK31 window and

 reopening it restores normal operation.

Anyone have the same type of problem? BTW, I've tried other PSK31
interfaces and they seem to work without problems. Any thoughts would
 be greatly appreciated.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN and WinXP problem?

2002-07-10 Thread Barry
Just to clarify, I always close DX4WIN (and back up the SAVE
directory), and all other apps, before shutting down.

Subject: [Dx4win] DX4WIN and WinXP problem?

  Hi all,
I recently upgraded computers, which included a change from Win98 to
  WinXP (Home).
I am having a problem with WinXP shutdown, where the system hangs
at the Windows shutting down screen, and I have to unplug the
computer to actually power down. It happens intermittently, and I'm
trying to figure out which app. may be causing the problem.
While I'm not certain, I believe it only happens when I've had DX4WIN
running prior to shutdown. Has anyone else had similar trouble?
  Tnx,

[Dx4win] Country Database

2002-05-07 Thread Barry
The way DX4WIN's country file is set up, if you just download a
new version from time to time, you will lose any customization
(callsign exceptions) you've entered. In my case, I have lots of
obsolete Russian calls (and some others) from the 70s entered,
and correctly identified, that will get all screwed up if I don't
maintain my own updates.

How often do new countries come along? Is it that big a deal to
maintain your own database, and add a new one once very few
years?!

The original poster was a bit cocky, but it isn't unreasonable to

maintain the files, I shouldn't have to wade through reflector
archives or subscribe to a reflector to get database updates. It's
not that I'm lazy, I just like to work smart, not hard :-) I'm
tempted to write a script to do a diff (comparison) between my
database files and other logging programs' database files that are
available for download...just for the fun of it, so it's not about the
 effort involved.

You can't copy lawnmower blades and FTP them to a website. Sure would
 be nice, though.

  I paid for a ride-on lawnmower, version 4, but I don't seem to get
anything in the way of lawn mowing support.

Does anyone out there have a reasonably competent lawnmower
  guy they can supply?

I'm not a big gun Lawnmowing person. I just putter around and
mow the lawn every once in a while. So I don't have the interest in
maintaining my lawnmower. Why should I? I paid for the lawnmower,
and there are folks out there that are much better at maintaining
  them than I am!

I mowed a lawn. It came out terrible. I tried to replace the
blades, but nothing seems to work.

Please don't bother replying with a list of detailed step-by-step
instructions on how to fix my mower. I have no interest in learning
this: my mower is probably out-of-date: and even if I fixed this
one, I'd forget how to do it by the next time I needed to use it.

[Dx4win] Multiple QSL managers for different modes on same callsign

2002-05-05 Thread Barry
We didn't chase every band/mode combination, so we didn't need such
exhaustive record keeping. I recall having 3 DXCC lists, one for each
mode. A check mark next to the country meant worked, and if/when I
got a card, it was crossed off.

Dang..have y'all become so spoiled with the automation of logging,
 that
y'all have forgotten what was done using paper logs? Remember them? Why
not just use the notes for this QSO box for situations such as this, and
move on! Is it really necessary to have the manager printed on the label
 for
direct QSL's? Bureau QSL's are another situation, and would require some
  alteration?

What I've found to work for me is to alter the callsign such as; K1B/SSB
 for
SSB QSO's and list the manager for that callsign as RZ3AA and all other
modes for K1B QSO's QSL to YT1AD. You do have to remember to alter the
callsign for any SSB QSO but if you set the first SSB QSO with K1B to
K1B/SSB and also make the Baker Howland Island exception for K1B/SSB in
the prefix box, then set the QSL manager to RZ3AA, all subsequent QSO's
 with
K1B/SSB will have the correct QSL manager. 73, -=Rog-K9RB=-

[Dx4win] ICOM IC-746

2002-01-14 Thread Barry F. Thaysen
List..

I just bought a used IC-746 and am in the midst of configuring DX4WIN for
it. I notice however, that the IC-746 is conspicuous by its absence in the
help file list of ICOM addresses. Any IC-746 users out there with the
correct address info? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
