[Dx4win] Lost QSO's

2008-02-19 Thread Bill Walker
I have now the model Mark described earlier, APC BE350R, in the
Staples ad. It does contain a CD/DVD with software and an
interconnect cable (USB) for automatic shutdown for both PC and Mac.
I have not tested it yet, but I assume it will work fine. Another APC
I had did great with a PC.

staples has an APC 200w, 350VA UPS on sale this week for $20 AR, with
 free shipping...

I even use them on the answering machine to avoid having to reenter
 the time

My 2 cents is that an overall better solution is to keep your
computer on a small interruptible power supply (UPS). You don't
need one that will last that long (5 or 10 minutes is fine), and
there are plenty of small ones available from companies like APC
 (www.apc.com
 ), Belkin (www.belkin.com) and Ultra (www.ultraproducts.com) for
well under $100. (I personally have at least one from each of
those companies at home, with a somewhat larger Ultra that powers
a couple of computers, most of my network gear, and a few other
 things.)

The advantage of this is that in the event of a power outage, you
will not only have the time to save the QSO, but you can also shut
your computer down in an orderly fashion. Many of these products
will connect to your computer and will shut it down after a
specified set of conditions are met (e.g., backup battery has been
running and has 'x'% power left, etc.), meaning that even if
you're not there, your computer will still shut down properly.

Even with a system that writes to disk upon save, there is still a
small window where a QSO could be lost, although I can understand
the frustration at loosing any data for any reason.

As for your specific suggestion, there are utility programs that
will make a key sequence to any arbitrarily complex set of other
key sequences (and some will get a lot more complicated,
simulating mouse movement and mouse button clicks), though
 personally I don't use them so I can't give a recommendation.

 W5LT wrote:
I am not a computer wizard, but is it possible to program an
 unused function
key (say F12) to execute: enter alt s sequence ??
That way you could enter QSO (from a spot) and write to disk with
 one
 button.
That would be a neat solution. Just a thought.

[Dx4win] Lost QSO's

2008-02-18 Thread Bill Walker
Mark:

Help me here if you will; I like the brice, but . . . .

All I see on Staples web site is APC's 210w 350VA at $80 and larger
more expensive units. How did you find your $20 unit?

What did you mean by AR?

[Dx4win] Lost QSO's

2008-02-18 Thread Bill Walker
Mark:

Many thanks for the tip; and you to Jim, AD1C. I ordered two.

And now I know what AR means; you learn something new every day.

I don't know why the special doesn't come up when I go to the Staples
site directly. I even tried the weekly specials and the Presidents,
Day specials, but no UPS. Maybe the offers are keyed to certain
regions.

Anyway thanks for the lead.

[Dx4win] YAESU G800DXA ROTOR CONTROL

2008-02-05 Thread Bill Walker
Rod:

Yes, I use DX4WIN, latest version. Go to preferences/control and
under the rotor control section select:

Type: Hygn DCV1
Handshake: Thunderform|ARSWIN

I don't have the slightest idea what that last declaration does, but
that is what the manual says and it works FB for me.

Good Luck.

I have the Yaesu G800-SDX with a RotorCard SDX from Idiom Press and
it works like a charm. It does require a serial port. I have not
tested it with a serial/USB converter.

 See: www.idiompress.com

email me if you have further questions.

[Dx4win] Second Sound Card for PSK31

2007-09-12 Thread Bill Walker
Jim Paul:

Thanks for the comeback. . .

I read the F1 help before my first post; I find the F1 help often
gives more information than the Manual. But this time both left me
confused.

I don't see anything in Windows (XP - SP2) that designates the audio
cards as 0 or 1 or -1 or anything else except their names as listed
in the Device Manager - Creative Soundblaster Audio PCI . . . . and
Creative Audio PCI . . . ..

So no matter what I designate(I have tried all 5 possibilities) in
Preferences | Control | PSK Sound Card, DX4Win always seems to be
linked to the original card in my computer - Creative Soundblaster
Audio PCI . . . . where PSK seems to be working fine. I just seem
unable to get DX4Win to link to the second audio card.
