[Dx4win] DX4WIN and FT-8

2018-03-06 Thread Byron Peebles
Is there a way to integrate the FT-8 WSJT-X app into DX4WIN like MMTY is
done?

I have recently started using FT-8 and I do import the QSOs, but would
like it to work more like SSB and CW.

[Dx4win] CAT Commands from DX4WIN

2018-03-01 Thread Byron Peebles
I saw your Post to the DX4WIN list.  The N1MM+ Logger supports something
similar by using a logger command that tells it to send the command to
the CAT interface of the radio. I am not aware that DX4WIN has this,
although I do feel it would be a great feature and not difficult to
implement.

reference:
http://n1mm.hamdocs.com/tiki-index.php?page=Macros#CATAHEX_CATIHEX_CATAASC_CATIASC_CATACTASC_CATACTHEX_Macro_Commands

The first usability difference is N1MM+ Logger has a row of function
keys displayed "in QSO mode", while DX4WIN has always expected you to
memorize QSO Input accelerator keys, so maybe this feature would require
a revamp of how the QSO window looks.

[Dx4win] Default Callsign Limits

2017-01-03 Thread Byron Peebles
There is currently a special event station in Canada signing with a
13-character callsign, including the /VE1 prefix. But DX4WIN seems to
have a 12-character callsign length limit.

Is there a simple update to support this special event call?

[Dx4win] Unable to Show 80/160 Spots

2015-12-06 Thread Byron Peebles
I recently redeployed my 80/160 sloper and I can't seem to get the spots

I have confirmed the spots are showing in the packet window and that the

either of those bands appear. Even "DX TEST 3525" shows nothing.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN and Elecraft - Using Multiple COM Ports

2015-08-14 Thread Byron Peebles
There is a new Application note on Elecraft.com for using multiple
virtual COM ports.

Many contact and contest logging programs require the use of dual COM
ports at the host computer for transceiver control and keying. This
Application Note introduces methods for concentrating multiple computer
COM ports to a single transceiver serial port, using COM Port
Concentrator (CPC) software. An example is used for illustration purposes.

[Dx4win] Windows 7 64-bit BSOD Resolved

2012-03-10 Thread Byron Peebles
It's been quite some time since I was satisfied with my DX4WIN host,
a 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate install. Although I had all the latest patches,
and quite a few amulets, I just could not get away from experiencing the
infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) and a similarly annoying pause
that seemed to happen at all the wrong moments, like when I was just
about to acknowledge a call back from some rare DX station who was about
to QRT.

Tonight I was about to throw in the towel and punt. I had done all kinds of
system upgrades, bought better keyer interfaces, improved the
USB-serial hardware,
and installed everything there was to install, and more, and more than once.

In one last moment of try anything - it can't get worse I was down to
the point
where only the keyboard and the power button worked, neither of which
are USB.

So, I connected my USB mouse to a port it had never been connected to
before.
The system thought a minute, installed the drivers and the mouse lit.
It worked.
I repeated this process with each item, the Fast Serial interface, the
WinkeyUSB,
the label printer, the UPS. They all worked. So, I rebooted. Repeatedly.
I rebooted more than I'd been able to reboot without a BSOD in, well,
forever.
No problem.

There was one item on the desk that was no longer connected. A
bargain-priced
Rosewell 7-port USB hub. I had noticed that connecting an FTDI-based
device to
port 4 of this thing caused an instant BSOD, so I left it disconnected.
Forever.

After the job of again working DX without worrying I'd access my log again,
I did a little search engine exercise and found other people describing
the same
scenario that included this hub. It was a common thread in the
descriptions,
and it was common to two computers that had a similar problem.

So, I see the occasional posting here about BSOD, so check the USB hub.
Might be a hit.

73, Byron

PS. Yes, the downside is that box is still running Windows. :-)

[Dx4win] Thoughts on Recording A, K with Logs

2011-08-06 Thread Byron Peebles
The recent subspot activity caused me to think about band activity
during stronger and weaker propagation conditions. Last night, for
example, I could barely hear an EA station on 20 meters, and that was
about the only DX on the HF bands for a time. I thought it would have
been interesting if my logbook had recorded the K/A figures with each
QSO. Anyone else think that has value? I know it isn't related to
awards at all, but it could help with planning for working DX.

[Dx4win] New Country List, ST0 and Packet Spots

2011-07-25 Thread Byron Peebles
Back in the day, I worked ST0RY for Sudan. They all still show properly
as ST.

I updated the Country file to add the ST0 prefix for S Sudan.

When the spot for ST0R arrives, it shows as Sudan, not S Sudan.
When I edit the QSO to ST0, it shows that QSO as S Sudan.
When I click a later ST0R spot, it is Sudan in the prefix field, not ST0.

Operator error here somewhere?

[Dx4win] Windows 7 64-Bit Pauses and Freezes (UPDATE)

2011-06-05 Thread Byron Peebles
Friends:

Using the Task Manager and the Configuration Manager resource mentioned
in the previous post, I am feeling better about eliminating the problems
I was experiencing with my Windows 7 Ultimate system and DX4WIN.

First, the change from the Display Windows Manager (dwm.exe) from Aero
to Classic themes seems to have made the windows faster. As I continued
to look for anything that used more resources than DX4WIN, I also
removed a Microsoft Office utility that is for shared document caching.
It seems like the Install script for Office adds that to your Startup
programs and I will never share an Office document from this computer.
then, two Adobe Acrobat products installed themselves to make my PDF
reading faster in some way and they are now not part of the system
startup and background processes. When these changes are combined, the
system behaves better, at least so far.

Second, I found a configuration error in the system that had really bad
side effects. When I was attempting to get the MMTTY RTTY software
working, I have set the audio output device to default to my Ten-Tec 712
USB-Sound-Card Interface. I had also set the Mic input to PTT on the
Ten-Tec radio. The result of this mistake is that my system sounds,
startup, spots, etc were being routed to the radio, not the speakers,
and were keying the radio. Not at all a good thing, since I have to
assume those sounds could be heard, even though I set the radio to one
watt output when I'm not in QSO, just in case.

So, one set of changes to minimize overheads on the combined CPU/GPU of
a low-end, low-power motherboard and a secon change to reverse a
bonehead configuration mistake that I made in a last-ditch effort to
make something unrelated to DX4WIN work.

Again, time is the real measure of resolution, so I'll give it a week or
two of active CW work to see if this is truly resolve.

Re: [Dx4win] Windows 7 64-Bit Pauses and Freezes (UPDATE)

2011-06-05 Thread Byron Peebles

Unfortunately, my QSO with HP1 tonight was interrupted by numerous
pauses, making me feel like I was learning morse code again. Which I
might actually be doing, to tell the truth.

Another examination of the Task Manager showed the Firefox 4 32-bit
executable doing battle with the Firefox add-on container executable for
top spot in the CPU usage list. This might be because there is an issue
with Firefox *32 under Windows 7 64-bit that is exaggerated by the use
of these add-ons on the QRZ.com web pages, which I use as my home page
in the shack. I went into the Help menu of Firefox and disabled add-ons
and the test (under full power) seemed to show the lag/pause was gone.
Only real operating will prove that. More later.

I want to say that with each item I have removed, from Aero Themes, to
MSFT Office doc caches, to Adobe Startup executables, the system has
become more responsive. The fact I now have voice announcements in the
shack (rather than keying the radio) is a major plus.

Now all I have to do is get the pause outa here.

I have asked a friend who is active on the Firefox development forums to
let me know if they hear something about the add-on container and
Windows 7 64-bit.

[Dx4win] Windows 7 64-Bit Pauses and Freezes

2011-06-04 Thread Byron Peebles
My friends:

I had posted a note here not long ago about my 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate
install having pause issues with DX4WIN, especially bad at times when I
was keying CW. In spite of the upgrade to WinKey2-USB, the frustration
and problem remains. I've now observed those pauses in software other
than the DX4WIN logger. However, the good news is that I've come across
an article that might help me, and the other folks who sent me direct
emails expressing they had the same problem. I intend to follow the
instructions from Microsoft this weekend and hope to be able to post a
resolution in the future. In the meantime, if you are having pausing
issues under Windows 7, you might just read this Microsoft article on
managing what is running on your system and debugging what's not running
correctly.

Good Luck!

[Dx4win] Momentary Pauses in Windows 7 Ultimate

2011-04-13 Thread Byron Peebles
At first, I would be operating CW and find the first time I went to the
CW typing window there would be an accasional pause before the soft-key
content would appear and be sent. I attributed this to the fact I was
using USB-to-serial-to-key keying.

But, it now appears I get this randomly in the behavior of different
windows when they get focus. For example, if I click on a spot that
should take me to a new frequency, the QSO window clears, but the new
entry doesn't popular immediately, just like the CW window didn't
populate with the text from the soft-key press.

In retrospect, I think this also happened in the packet window when I
was getting that set up. Might still happen but I'm not really looking
at it to see it.

I only see this on change of window focus to an input-type window, that
is a window that wold let me type into it.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

[Dx4win] Radio Polling Interval - What's Too Aggressive?

2011-03-29 Thread Byron Peebles
What's consider to aggressive for the CAT Polling Interval and Retry Counts
for the radio interface?

I am using USB-to-Serial for Radio, Digital Audio, Rotor, Amp and CW Keying.

Is 500ms too often with 12 retries?

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Save Preferences and COM Ports

2011-03-23 Thread Byron Peebles
Under DX4WIN, when I save Preferences I get a message
Can't open COM10 for Keying - Port Already Open.

Which is true that it's already open.

But, it seems to make the COM ports unstable from there.

Anyone else see this under the latest release?

Seems like the only reason to close/open is if the COM was changed.

Windows 7 Ultimate, Zotac IONITX, BYTErunner USB-Serial Adapter

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 8, Windows 7 and Pure USB

2011-03-17 Thread Byron Peebles
I just built a very small computer to replace the giant workstation
that has been heating my shack for more than a decade. That old
Dell was a workhorse and held a compliment of extra serial boards
for all those old serial connections we once used: packet, transceivers,
etc.
But, the Dell doesn't sound as good as it once did, and both the radio
and the amp have been replaced, so it was time for the computer to go.

I selected a very small case, the 7x7x3 M-350 case you see everywhere
and the Zotac IONITX-A-U that was available used at a great price. I
decided
to use Windows 7 so I didn't have to change that for another ten years, and
I could continue to use DX4WIN to control everything. The Zotac is a
mini-iITX
form-factor and uses very low power. It is quiet and cool and takes up
little space.

This motherboard doesn't have any of the old serial ports, so I was
taking a gamble that all my equipment would interface over USB. Almost
all of it worked, often with workarounds.

The first USB-serial cables that I bought from a seller on eBay were
failures.
They seem to just be wire with connectors on the end, with not real circuit
for adapting the USB bus to a serial port. Well, I didn't risk much on
them.

The second USB-serial cables were interesting. The Windows 7 system
recognized them
immediately and assigned them COM ports, but the system didn't seem to
want to use
both COM5 and COM6 at the same time, so neither my rotor nor my radio
CAT worked
with any stability. Turn off one or the other and it seemed better, but
never use both.
But I stumbled on a workaround. If I connected the USB-Hub in my
monitor and then
connected the USB-serial cable to that, things were more stable. The
COM ports were
higher, but they worked.

In the end, I have the M2 rotor, Tentec Orion II CAT and Keyer working
through USB.
There is an occasional delay in first-character keying, but I think that
might be
Windows and not USB. I'll keep testing that to see how to improve it.

One thing I haven't worked out is the USB-USB connection for the Alpha
9500. The
Alpha Windows software is pretty sad and I didn't have time to try
something useful,
but in the end I really doubted I cared about talking computer-to-amp
for something
that was sitting on my desk.

I know there are other solutions, like external keyers, hubs, etc, but
this seems like a great first step.

I'd also comment that the new look of DX4WIN 8 frames is nice. I
don't see much different in
the software yet, but things were familiar enough for me to work 4A4A
pretty quickly tonight.
