[Dx4win] LoTW Question

2008-02-29 Thread Duane A Calvin
Probably already answered, but the ones that show the country are the
ones you have QSL's for. To see a QSL only view, choose the See my
QSL's in stead of See my QSO's. (the wording is similar to that - I
forget the exact words.)

LoTW to DX4WIN, the only QSOs showing an Upl Cnf are those that

I selected Show Details when performing the download.

I'm using DX4WIN 7.03.16.

The computer in the ham shack does not have a computer attached to it.
I want to be able to move my DX4WIN log file between the shack
computer and the one in the living room (connected to a printer) to
facilitate printing labels.

In addition to the log file itself, do I need to transfer any other

Duane,

There IS a mass change operation available to set the Upload Flags.
It is hidden in the Labels menu, about halfway down. Just filter
your import for the required date range, then apply this command. It
works like a charm. (However, it would be nice if this little bug
were fixed so that it worked as before!)

[Dx4win] dxcc submission

2007-06-07 Thread Duane A Calvin
Luckily, my submission was fairly small, so I just ran the Card in hand
version first, then the LOTW and CARD version second (after clearing
all the submission flags). I saved both lists and imported into Excel
and manually marked the ones I had cards only for and compiled that list.
Later I will compile the LOTW list and do those as well and make this a
hybrid submission. If I had a lot more than I do (14 cards, 37 LOTW)
it would quickly become unmanageable.

I've stumbled across what looks like a problem. In preparing a
 DXCC
  submission, I find the following:

  1. First, set preference to use only card in hand, then do a
 DXCC
  Submission. Result? ~32 cards selected
  2. Clear all DXCC submission flags.
  3. Set Confirmed QSO preference to Card and Upload and do a
 DXCC
Submission. Result ~ 80 QSO's listed (OK, so far)
  4. Clear all DXCC Submission flags.
  5. Set confirmed QSO pref to Upload and do a DXCC Submission.
 Result?
  314 QSO's!! Clearly wrong.

Obviously DX4WIN is somehow not counting the already submitted
 cards when
it does uploads. Since these all relate to the same DXCC award,
 this
would appear to need some work.

Another item: Where is version 7.03 on the US web site? I had
 to go to

I just did a test with my HP 712C Deskjet. I printed a QSO on the

let it dry for a few minutes. I then ran it under a stream of water
 with
 no effect. I rubbed the
printing with my finger and, after a few rubs, I saw a bit of ink
 dissolving. The printing was
still clearly legible. Frankly, I was a bit surprised at the water
resistance of the ink. This was
with an HP cartridge. Perhaps some of the aftermarket or refilled
 cartridges are not as good.

Another point in favor of the ink jets is that they need no warm up

[Dx4win] Label printer

2007-03-24 Thread Duane A Calvin
There's no waste on the labels. When you finish printing and have less
than a full sheet, just tell the next print job how many labels you have
used, and it automatically starts with the first one available.
(Assuming you use them the way DX4WIN does - vertical columns from top
left to bottom right.) DX4WIN does that with just your intervention at
the start of the print job. Works great. No waste.

Cesar and Group

I use a laser printer to direct print on the QSL cards.

I have used an inkjet in the past. It prints a less than desirable results.
It will blur if it accidentally comes in contact with a liquid source.

I was given a Samsung ML-1210 laser about 2 years ago. The comments about a
professional looking QSL keep coming over and over. The toner is fused to
the paper with little to no chance of it being blurred like an inkjet.

If I need to print 1 QSL I drop in 1 card and print just one.

When the cartridge is empty I buy toner after market and recharge the
cartridge myself. Some have been recharged 8 or 9 times. Toner comes in 90 gr.
bottles for about $4 US or less. A new toner cartridge is about $70+.
Recharged
cartridges are about $50 in the stores or via Internet sales.

The biggest cost has been for Alcohol cleaner sheets at Staples or Office
Depot. They run about $4 each but are worth the costs for a clean printer.

End result is a very clean, permanent, professionally looking QSL at very
low cost.

Most stores use thermal register receipts. Looking at old sales receipts
months later they have faded. It would be very discouraging to pull out the
QSL
card years later and the thermal label is unreadable.

Overall I would say a direct print with a laser printer sales time, money
and produces a better result. I can print much more with a printer than label

maker.

I'd leave the label maker to printing address labels for envelopes not for
the QSL information.

Tony N2MFT

Has any one else noticed this? When I'm running DX4WIN, the screen never

tricking the keyboard/mouse detect logic to trick Windows XP logic into
thinking someone is actively using the PC? I'd like to get this fixed -
no need to see the screen when I'm out of the room for an hour or two,
but don't want to quit DX4WIN.

Cant answer your question but there is no difference in power consumption; and
if you using a flat screen
a screen saver is not needed. Comes from old CRT displays - they do burn in.
Only sense is if you switch on password protection to secure your PC.

If you want save power you must change settings in BIOS. There are options to
switch harddisk and display
after a given time of no work.

Betreff: [Dx4win] No Screensaver when DX4WIN is running

Has any one else noticed this? When I'm running DX4WIN, the screen never
goes to standby. The screensaver will start running, but eventually it
goes back to full display. Is there something about DX4WIN that is
tricking the keyboard/mouse detect logic to trick Windows XP logic into
thinking someone is actively using the PC? I'd like to get this fixed -
no need to see the screen when I'm out of the room for an hour or two,
but don't want to quit DX4WIN.

[Dx4win] Re: [WriteLog] TEN TEC ORION II

2006-07-25 Thread Duane A Calvin
Joe,
It works great with both DX4WIN and WriteLog. I've used mine
both on CW and RTTY contests, as well as SSB, and PSK31 in general usage.
No problems - all works as you would expect including picking up QSX
frequencies on the 2nd VFO, etc. I've used it on both the original Orion
and the Orion II.

Problems with the spot colors for Montenegro. Running the new country
file (#32), 4O3T already worked on 12, 15, 17, 20, 30 - both SSB and CW
modes. New spot comes in for 4O3T on 15 CW and the spot color is
yellow, which is the default for a new country. No calls present in
callsign alert box in setup. At this point, spots for 4O3T should
show as red for new band or mode, not yellow. DX4WIN release is 7.01
running on XP Home. All other spots are correctly colored and always
have been. Any ideas?

Go to Files, Preferences, Packet1 and uncheck the last item under Options
(in lower left corner).

Alert unconfirmed country

When enabled, a DX spot for a country that has not been confirmed will
be treated as if that country was never worked before. This option bypasses
all the logic for new modes or bands etc.

You better do that, just in case Paul lives in Califonia and have great
weather every day. ;) ;)

Seriously, I find the x64 edition to be a real improvement. For a start, it
starts in less than a quarter of the time my old Win2k did. And stable,
stable and again stable. Using a Asus A8V motherboard with two 512mb memoty
sticks making a total of 1GB of RAM . The CPU is a AMD 64 x2 3800+, dual
core CPU, and I find the setup faster than anything I've had so far even
counting back to the Windows Chicago beta and Windows 3,11 for Workgroups.
Ok, the x64 may not offer new features and overwelming using interface. It
just do the job, but faster, more secure, and with no hassele.

The comming 64 bit Windows Vista is sheduled for the begining of next year,
as I have heard. By then 64 bit drivers and prefereble full compilition of
64 bit Dx4Win will be availeble. (Am I hoping for to much?) Hopefully the
drivers needed to make DX4Win to start with x64, will be availeble much
much sooner than that, like any day right now (Am I right , Paul?) Anyway, I
do not work any shortwave until I get DX4Win to work again. (A promise or a
threat?, :) )

Hope this will inspre you to mitgrate to x64, even though I make some jokes.
and some threats :) It is really an improvement!

contesting.
I have set it up OK to send the contest number from the contest settings and
all is now working fine except that at the end of each memory key I press I
now need the focus to go back to the QSO window (F9).
Is there anyway I can insert a command on the memory line to do this?
I have %l working OK to log the call but it would be nice to move the focus
over to enter the next call.
My user's guide is based on an earlier version of DX4WIN so I'm not sure if
this feature has been added yet.
Anybody have an idea on this?

Geo, if you choose the special keys CW/RTTY last option in the QSO
menu of the QSO entry window while in real time entry you get the
function keys of the CW keyboard from the entry window and remain
focused on the entry window. It still has some limitations, but is an
improvement from having to hop between the entry window and the CW
keyboard.

It is still a poor substitute for a real contest logging program though.

Actually that reminds me in 7.04 the ability to change speed while the
keyboard is sending seems to have been lost, although you could do this
in earlier versions.

A couple questions for the group:

-- How can I set up a filter to search for QSOs by year? I thought it
might be interesting to track how many countries, zones, etc., I've worked
each year. The only examples I see seem to deal with QSL dates. I'm not
concerned with that - I just want to know what I worked each of the past
10 years. Just typing in a year gets me a Value is not a valid date
 box.

-- How do I change the available bands in the IOTA window? For DXCC,
WAZ, WAS, etc., I can go to preferences and check which bands I want to
show up in their respective window but I can't find any way to change the
IOTA window. I'm not planning on working too many IOTAs on the 3cm band.
 :-)

New to the list here..sorry if any of this is redundant.

 Thanks!

Hi Anders!

I'm a fan of dx4win but I hate Windows. For years, dx4win run without
problems
under linux in emulation mode. By version 6.04 things changed and the
program
dosen't run under Linux anymore. So I reinstalled windows on one PC and it
runs stand alone now. I'm not happy with this situation, because I do NOT
use
the internet with windows under ANY circumsdances. Paul, the programmer of
dx4win wrote me, he modifies the vich11.sys / vich11.vxd files.
If there are some more hams reporting the same problem, i think that will be
a
argument to force the changing of programcode.

So, I hope for all Linux users and for you, that the things are changeing
soon.

Please pass this email to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] because the

Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,
From version 7.02 the L character appear in the summary windows (zone,
country, WPX...) when, in the QSO window, the label field is set as Y for a
QSO with a station in a zone or country or WPX... never worked before. It's
working fine in zone, country, WPX and state windows but not in county and
IOTA windows (it's appear W like in previous versions). Is it a bug ?
I'm running Dx4Win 7.02.15.

[Dx4win] Scrolling in 7.02?

2006-05-26 Thread Duane A Calvin
Is it me, or have others noticed that the scrolling in their PC's
(including the packet window, for example) now is not smooth? Instead it
tries to repaint the scrolled area constantly as it is scrolled? No
changing of smooth scrolling in IE helps (don't know why it would on
other programs anyway.) DX4WIN 7.02 is the only thing I've recently
installed about the time the problem started, so I thought I'd check to
see if anyone else noticed a problem with this.

Hello,
I have successfully set up MMTTY together with DX4WIN.
The programs seems to work fine together.

My question is about the size of the text for the funktions keys. How can I
change the size of the text for F1..F8 and CTRL F1 ...CTRL F8?

Changing in preferenses and Screen doesn?t work.

I have read the help file up and down but no help.

Another question. Where can I edit the brag file in CTRL F3. I can?t find the
file and no help in the manual.

Any ideas?

How is that so, and is there a way to, relatively easily, I reconcile

If I am way off beam with the above assumption, please advise.

[Dx4win] Ten-Tec Orion rig file?

On several occasions in the past, I sent an Orion rig file to different
people, and now I find I'm in need of one of you sending me a copy back!
I moved to a new PC, and remembered to move my 'Save' directory, but
completely forgot about moving the Orion rig file. I have the ones that
came with DX4WIN, but I don't remember the several changes that were made
and worked well with my rig (including having digital modes show up as
FSK RTTY instead of Pactor, but there are other changes as well.) Thanks

* Fixed USCQP abbreviations for Clatsop, OR and Williamson, TN
* Added Randolph (RAN) and Winston (WIN) to AL QSO Party
* Fixed some abbreviations for AL QSO Party
* Fixed some bugs processing NA comment: field
* The time for county-line QSOs will be incremented by 1 second
for each QSO, so that LoTW etc. treat them as unique QSOs.

The next change I have planned is to be able to support multiple QSO
parties on the same weekend (i.e. NEQP, INQP, 7QP and MARAC CW). I
did not want that to hold up this release. I may have something
later this week or in early May.

[Dx4win] CD data bases

2006-03-10 Thread Duane A Calvin
Larry,
I used the Radio Amateur's Callbook for several years, but
switched to Buckmaster this year. QRZ is always available online to
compare against. I do not like Buckmaster as well as RAC, but it is
cheaper. Addresses come out with extra @ symbols in it, no country
name, and a number of other little annoyances that RAC doesn't have. So
far, I don't notice much difference in accuracy in the last year's CD.
For what it's worth.

Hi Larry,

I have been using Radio Amateur Callbook (Flying Horse) since about 1997.
It's installed on the hard drive. I buy mine from John K1XN (GOLIST), he
usually has good prices. My belief has always been that the Callbook guys have
better access to DX information, but that may have changed in the last few
years.

If I were to switch, I would probably choose QRZ over Buckmaster.

Yes, that was it! Never used that feature before and first tried it for the
3Y0. Having that show up in yellow the first time around was correct to me
as it was a new one overall. At that point, I deleted the 3Y0 and put VQ9LA
in, but had forgotten that. Of course, it's properly documented in the Help
for that field. I could have hit F1 for help in the first place, but didn't
do that. Anyway, all is well now and thanks much for the quick response.

For Callsign look up I have :

For QSL manager lookup address, I have :

Place your cursor in the QSL MGR box in the main
 screen.
Hopefully you have the call of the mgr entered. Hit
'ctl e' and a new window will open for the address
 of
that manager. You should already have the address of
that manager ready. Now enter (paste, copy) into
 that
 QSL manager address box
When you print your QSL's, every call associated
 with
that manager will be printed with the managers
 address
label...example: W3HNK manager might have several
DX labels to attach to you cards and put in an
 envelope
to Joe.When printing those labels will all be
 grouped
with Joe's call Great feature.. I use it for
 every

 the

[Dx4win] Internet Callsign Lookup

2006-02-21 Thread Duane A Calvin
Dick's response echos my experience also. F3 to bring up the Lookup
window with response from your callsign database on your PC, and any
manager lookups (I use GOLIST which works great). Then, with this window
active, hit Enter and it will send the same request to QRZ.COM and a
browser window will open and you'll see the info there. I think this is
documented somewhere, but not sure where.

 My experience is this:

Let's say you have three sources of information: (A) local call
 sign
lookup on a CD or local disk; (B) QSL manager lookup on a local
 disk; and
 (C) Internet access to call sign information on QRZ.com.

Hitting F3 while in the logging window will bring up a window
 showing the
results from (A) and (B). If you then hit Return, it will bring up
 your
browser that will display the results from (C).

What I gather from this is that DX4WIN cannot extract data from the
 QRZ.com
web site, but it can from known-format databases on your local
system. This makes sense when you think about how difficult it
 would be
for DX4WIN to duplicate the HTTP functions necessary to access a web
 site
and then to parse through all of the web site noise to actually
 identify
where the name and address are. What it can do, however, is invoke
 your
browser and direct it go to QRZ.com to display the appropriate call
 sign
 information for you to interpret.

What I do is use both QRZ.com and GOLIST databases on my local
 computer and
then call up QRZ.com on the Internet to look for any last minute
 changes.

Well that is the best bit of information I have seen here for a while,
works great.

I have another way to get extra QRZ info if you don't want to go jumping
to the web site. I run a telnet session to a DXcluster node that
supports QRZ lookups, I have programmed one of the function keys in the
packet window SH/QRZ%b without the quotes of course, so alt/p then hit
the function key and put in the call and enter. The info comes up in
the packet screen. Not full blown pictures and biography but if you are
on say a VHF/UHF packet link it's another option.

Hi John,

Place the http://www.qrz.com/ in both the
callsign lookup address box AND the QSL manager
lookup address. Then you can hit f3 and then return to get to QRZ.

Went through this a while ago and now it works fine by doing it that
way.

[Dx4win] ORION I 565AT and dx4win 7.01

2006-02-15 Thread Duane A Calvin
Works fine for me (except for BW/PBT, which will be dependent on which
bandstacking register it hits when you click the spot). You have to edit
the rig file to change a parameter in there related to each mode. If you
send an email to Steve ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), he will give you the
details. I'm not near my rig or software at the moment.

Subject: [Dx4win] missed spots in DX window?
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I did run one tests, from what I see...
(Running an older Version of software)...
A spot that comes through in my case the rtty or packet window if it's an
unrecognized call, (a busted or non letter or number prefix, or a question
mark in front of a callsign,) then spot is NOT decoded by DX4win in the
spot window :(( , and that callout is missed ?
Any everything that comes in, shows in rtty or packet window.
Now in my case that forces me to run 2 incoming window screens, so I don't
miss anything!
Now I would think the spot window should show in DXSPOT window, and say
COUNTRY UNKNOWN instead doing nothing, Roger?

[Dx4win] Incomming spots changing QSO window

2006-01-19 Thread Duane A Calvin
John,
I'm in front of my computer now - go to Preferences, to the QSO
tab, and UNCHECK the Callsign Update entry. See if that fixes your
problem. I think that's the one, but I'm not sure. On my setup, it is
checked, but the only time that the callsign follows the incoming spots
is if I have pressed F9, and the callsign field is empty (i.e., it's
waiting for me to type a call in). I never leave it in this condition.
I hit F9 just before I'm going to enter a call to log it. At any rate,
hopefully this answers your question.

Is there a way to stop incoming packet spots from changing the

  mode in the QSO window.

This is a real pain, I don't have rig control so I don't know it
  may
work better with that but reading Dennis's post maybe not.

DX4WIN didn't used to do this ver 5.07 but when I upgraded to 7.01

  it
now does. I don't know exactly when the change happened.

The problem is that you can be working away say 40m CW and end up
logging the qso as 20m PSK31 or something unless you remain for
  ever
vigilant. I want the log to follow what I am doing not someone on

The only work around I have found so far other than turning the
  spots
off and clearing all spots from the spot window is to type
  something
quickly into the callsign box then hitting home so that when you
  start
typing a real call you can delete the bogus character ahead of
 the
curser. Sometimes the spot beats you, sometimes I forget to do
  this.
Its not a very good solution and although I don't think I have
 been
caught out it is very likely to cause errors in the log.

I have been using DX4WIN for over 5 years now and think it is a
  fine
program and continue to support it. I like the implementation of
support for LoTW and MTTY in the new version but in my opinion the

  above
problem is a serious blunder in the operation of DX4WIN.

I have entered it as a bug in the bug reports but never got an

Hi Duane,

Yes I had tried that before and almost thought it was it but no. It is
not actually the callsign but the band and mode that is the problem.

Thank you for trying. Of course many are using rig control etc and it
may well behave better with that.

Yes it is after pressing F9 and the call field is empty. Gee you have
to be quick I have had the spot band mode info jump in there between
completing one QSO and starting another. That's when I put a bogus
letter in there so it is not empty but that is a bit clumsy too,
shouldn't really have to do that.

Do you have the FIF-232C connected between FT767gx and the serial port ?
If so then you can select one of the following rigs in the DX4WIN LIST
FT-990, FT-1000, probably you have to make some modifications to the

scan and email me, maybe I can see what is best for this rig.

[Dx4win] Dupe Spots - DX4WIN 7.01

Apparently I've lost part of my configuration, and I can't tell where the
setting is for this. In 6.04 and earlier, repeated spots for the same DX
station on the same band/mode were not duplicated in the Spots window.
Instead the latest spot replaced the earlier one. I really like this
behavior as it leaves more of the window available for other DX spots,
especially when one DX station's spots are hitting heavily. How do I
return my 7.01 setting to eliminate the duplicate (triplicate, etc.)
spots? I can't find it anywhere!

How it works, as I remember:
  - I submit a new country for mixed credit because I'm going after my
first DXCC credit for that country.
  - DX4WIN credits it for mixed ONLY. (or it has in the past)
However, once a card is submitted to ARRL for DXCC credit, the QSO,
date/time, band, mode are all recorded, and it is available for credit
for any award. It does not need to be resubmitted. So, the DX4WIN
submission for these (i.e., submission where there is no existing band or
mode submission already done) should be upcated to indicate it is now
submitted for those awards, even if you're not submitting for that
particular award at the same time and may do so in the future.
Otherwise, cards are being submitted (and charged for by the ARRL) for
band/modes already credited.

What I don't know is whether this has been corrected in DX4WIN or not.
Whether or not you ever plan to submit for a RTTY DXCC, if you've worked
P5 on RTTY only (like me - brag, brag), then I want it to credit both
RTTY, and the band as well as being for mixed credit. Makes sense to
me, anyway! (Without this fix, I must remember to go through all my
submissions and check to see if they are a new band/mode and manually
change DX4WIN submission for each otherwise my records and the ARRL
records will not match, and DX4WIN will later tell me I need to resubmit
the same P5 card for another endosement.) Sorry, I didn't lay that out

[Dx4win] DXCC Submission question about LOTW and paper QSL's

2005-05-09 Thread Duane A Calvin
I've been doing LOTW now for several months, but have not submitted any
of the QSL's there for awards. Meanwhile, I have about 100 cards that I
can submit for endorsements including a few new countries. I usually
take my cards to Ham-Com in Dallas during June for QSL checking there.
However, now my questions begin, and I'm hoping some of you have been
through this already to know how well DX4WIN works in this regard (mixed
QSLing). My questions are:

1. Does DX4WIN have a way of submitting LOTW QSO's like it does for
paper cards? I don't see one.
2. How can I be sure that cards I take with me don't have a QSL already
in LOTW (maybe not for that QSO, but for that country/band/mode?)
3. Has anyone done much with this mixed QSL confirmation yet?
4. Has Paul fixed the problem where a new country card submitted gets
automatically counted for both band and mode, not just for the mixed
award yet?

Anything I've forgotten that will bite me? Submitting QSL's and
reconciling the results are some of the most fun I have every year! Ha,
ha!

Hello Brian,

I tried last year with Fedora Core 1 and Wine. Dx4Win 6.03 is apparently
checking I/O at start and then issue an error and quit. I remember having
tried older versions without this behavior but was not successful even if it
loads OK (don't remember excaly why but probably beacause of fonts display,
but not sure :-)

I completely switched to Linux last year and I still keep a Windows machine
only for Dx4Win.

I will try again probably with Fedora Core 3 and again Wine and maybe also
QEmu but I don't know when (FYI : I 'm trying only with Open Source
emulators, no Win4Lin, VMWare, ...)

If and when I will have positive results I will surely post on the list. I'm
still dreaming about a Dx4Win Linux version ;-)

As this is mostly off topic here, I will not post anymore about Linux, only
via private mail.

[Dx4win] Packet Window Rig Control of FT1000MP

2004-10-11 Thread Duane A Calvin
On Ten-Tec and ICOM radios, it switches the frequency on the currently
assigned register. With my Omni VI+ and now with my Orion, I often move
to the band/range (BSR) where the spot is going to point me and then
click the spot. That way I don't screw up the other 3 registers for that
band. Other times I'm in a hurry and just go back and fix it later if it
steps on one of my preferred settings.

This weekend I decided to use the packet window of DX4WIN for
 the first
  time.
I usually use an internet browser. I use an FT-1000MP. On this
 rig each
  band has
an A channel and a B channel. Each press of the band button
 toggles
  between
A and B. I usually keep one of the 2 channels centered in
 the lower
  CW portion
of the band and the other somewhere in the phone portion of the
 band so I
  can
easily switch between Phone and CW. The annoying thing I noticed
 was that
  this
seems to get screwed up if I double-click on a packet spot so
 that
  DX4WIN sets
my VFO frequency. It seems to switch to the other channel then
 set it to
  the
desired frequency. It took me awhile to figure out why my A
 and B
  channels
were getting screwed up. Does anyone know if there is some
 configuration
item somewhere that will change this behavior?

[Dx4win] Special Event Callsign Usage and DX4WIN

2004-09-12 Thread Duane A Calvin
Hello Paul,
The current run of the W6x stations (Route 66 On the Air) brings
to mind an anomaly I noticed earlier on DX4WIN. Is it possible to add an
expiration date for callsign recognition? Here's what I'm thinking.
Perhaps we could have a single value (easiest option to code) that would
allow the user to set some period of time prior to which spots received
for previously worked stations would again show up as unworked. My
immediate problem is that I worked most of the W6x stations currently on
the air back in 2001 (1996 for one of them), and so as I'm trying to work
them all again this year, I'm not getting them in the DX Spots window.
If I could set an expiration date on the spot comparison logic such that
spots for stations older than 11 months (for example) would again show up
as unworked, I could use it to identify new stations during these
operating events and re-work them for the new year's credit. Likewise,
once they were worked this year, they would not show up in the Spots
window. Just a thought, and certainly not high priority. My solution
may not be the best, it's just the first one that comes to mind.

The other day someone mention problems in 6.03 with the PSK window. I do
not remember what the problem was but I have noticed the following:

When I open the PSK window I have to go to the PSK settings\TX and change
the Line to the opposite of what it shows. For example if it is checked DTR
I then move it to RTS and it is fine. Next time it will show RTS as checked
so I must move it to DTR and then it works fine.

I discussed this with one other user of 6.03 and he is having the same
problem. It is no big deal as long as I remember that I must change it each
time I open the PSK window.

[Dx4win] Help on selections definitions

2004-06-27 Thread Duane A Calvin
OK, I'm going nuts here. For some reason the logic used in creating
selections in a number of places in DX4WIN just never matches what I
expect. I've read the help files and the users manual - they don't help
at all. I'm setting up selections for my two callsigns for LoTW exports.
The first one got set up by accident somehow in the many attempts I made
to do it. But now I can't do the same for a 2nd selection. As soon as I
start to change the selection name, the Update button disappears, and I
can't make any other changes to the selection type, etc. Can anyone give
me the sequence of events used to set up a new selection? Many thanks in
advance.

NEVER MIND! I found the problem - it's apparently a DX4WIN bug. Start
your selection name with an A (or an AC), like my callsign, and it will
not allow you to save that selection name. Don't know why. I started it
with a blank, then went back and deleted the blank after I had everything
else set and it saved it just fine. Weird. Paul, you might want to
check this out.

I noted this 2 weeks ago, but thought perhaps I'd done something wrong.
Then, I just did another import of new QSLs from LoTW (lotwreport.adi) today,
representing new confirmations during the past 2 weeks.

The adi file has 33 confirmations in it. DX4Win says it successfully
imported 19. Those missing 14 indeed are in DX4Win, but every one of them
is a
duplicate QSO now. My original DX4Win entry is there with the upload flag
set, the date set, but Upl Cnf = N. The second log listing (obviously created
by the import process) has the upload flag = N, no date, but Upl Cnf = Y. I
can see no rhyme nor reason in the Qs or the adi file.

Has anyone else seen this, or know what I'm doing wrong or what the problem
is? I am using the ADIF import, with Imported QSO sets Upload Confirmed
flag selected.

For you Orion owners, since switching from my Omni VI+ to the Orion, I
notice occasionally that DX4WIN hangs up for a second or so as I'm

[Dx4win] Orion timeouts with DX4WIN?

2004-01-07 Thread Duane A Calvin
A friend who had just received an Orion has found difficulties with
DX4WIN as follows:

1. Sometimes when sending CW from the DX4WIN keyboard, he sees long
delays (1-2 seconds) before sending commences. It never stutters once it
starts, but occasionally hesitates.

2. If he sets Retries to 1 on the poll setting, the radio times out
almost immediately, even with 10 second polling intervals. If retries is
set to 2, then it seems to operate OK - has anyone experienced timeouts
with the Orion / DX4WIN?

He has all the interface settings set at the TT specified values.

I would be very surprised if this were due to Orion-specific
 problems,
unless the Orion interface for DX4WIN involves transmitting CW to
 the radio
via the serial com port, as opposed to simply using one port line to

operate a transistor switch that keys the rig through the key jack.

I am trying to get my newly delivered Orion up and running with DX4WIN

Paul kindly sent me a copy of his Orion.rig file which I placed in the
DX4WIN radios folder. Subsequently the Orion appeared in the drop down
list of radios. I selected Orion but found the interface timed out. My
first response has been to suspect some kind of hardware, most likely
cable, problem but all seems to be fine in that if I load Writelog, I
can select the Orion without any problem and mode/frequency data can be
happily passed back and forth. Back to DX4WIN and I tried all four
combinations of settings for DTR and RTS but in each case I get a radio
has timed out message. My Orion is on COM 1 and the port speed is set
to 57600 baud.

I wonder is there someone out there harbouring the pearl of wisdom I
need?

Happy Christmas all.

[Dx4win] DXCC Award Submission problem

2002-10-04 Thread Duane A Calvin
A couple of clarifications:

1. DX4WIN only credits if you request that credit to happen by turning on
or off the valid bands to match (or separate award). So, if you submit
your first DXCC MIXED, with 105 cards, those QSO's will be credited in
DX4WIN *only* for Mixed. Not for Mode or Band, which the ARRL will
automatically credit you for towards those awards. This is what I'm
attempting to describe.

2. Taking cards to hamfests places a limit of something like120 cards for
your submission. This causes one to start eliminating categories to trim
the list. So, let's say I want to trim my list by not submitting for the
40m band category, and I turn that off in DX4WIN. The logic will cause
any submissions that were purely for 40m band to be eliminated. However,
a new mode QSL that happens to be on 40m will be submitted, and the ARRL
will credit it for both mode and 40m band credit. However, DX4WIN will
not credit it for 40m. Giving credit vs. what you are submitting for are
two different concepts, and that is where DX4WIN errs. This is the kind
of thing I'm describing.

3. Agreed, ARRL will not give you an award for anything with less than
100 countries, however, that QSO is credited toward the award whether you
have applied for it or not (re: the example above).

4. And, yes, the ARRL has not always taken this approach, however they
have consistently since I've been submitting cards, which started in 1990
or '91. So, for old timers, they still need to do that initial
reconcile.

Sorry to belabor this, but I hope it clears up what I'm trying to say.
The last time I spoke to him about it, Paul agreed it did not work as the
ARRL describes they do the crediting, but was adamant he was not going
change it because of how he reads the rules. I like the program in
almost all other respects, but this part always causes me more grief than
I like!

That is true now, but I just sent ARRL over $100 with my submittal
 last
week, which included re-submitting many many cards that had been
 previously
submitted and ARRL did not record the band until several years ago.
 ARRL
does not accept less than 100 cards with the first submittal. I
 believe
they have dropped the minimum cards that have to be submitted.

DX4WIN also credits you for MIXED, BAND, and MODE for any card that
 you
submit IF you have the DXCC preferences set up correctly. I do not
 know
what you would want the author to fix. The program won't submit
 cards
automatically (like my 30 meter cards) where I only have 91
 confirmed until
 I get 100 or more.

If you don't tell ARRL which qso's to credit, you will be charged
 for each
and every qso on the cards you submit, whether you have already paid
 for
 them previously.

Unfortunately, in 5.03 the authors have not yet fixed that problem.
 I
got confirmation from the DXCC desk twice (Bill Kennamer, and Bill
 Moore)
about how the counts are done (and have been for the past 10 years),
 but
the last time we discussed it, the authors' interpretation of the
 DXCC
rules did not match what the ARRL says they practice. Hopefully
 that
will change in the next version. In short, if you submit a QSL to
 the
ARRL for credit, you will be credited for the MIXED, BAND, and MODE
 for
that QSO. There is never a need to resubmit that QSO again. This
 is
where I spend an evening or two reconciling my DX4WIN listing
 against

[Dx4win] Problems with XP Conversion

2002-08-17 Thread Duane A Calvin
I assume what you're saying is true for DX4WIN 3.05 and not 5.03? I ran
the upgrade version of WinXP Home and the CW keying worked fine on 5.03
by either following the instructions to install the driver or by
reinstalling DX4WIN 5.03. I can't speak to 3.05...

[Dx4win] Questions??

2002-06-01 Thread Duane A Calvin
This is a very good reason to download the free ZoneAlarm from the
internet (software firewall) or purchase Norton Personal Firewall. Both
have done very well in reviews. I use Norton, but only because all my
other tools are Norton-based - well, ok, mostly because I didn't know
ZoneAlarm could be had for free...

 Eric,

I'll leave questions #1 and #2 for others to answer, but perhaps I
 can help
 a little with question #3.

I use DX4WIN with my PC using soundcard digital modes for RTTY and
 PSK, and
LPT port keying for CW operation. There are lots of references to
 the simple
single-transistor circuits needed to enable those types of interface
 between
your rig and your PC. If you want to get fancier and create an
 intermediate
switch box between your two rigs and two PCs... with two software
configurations that recognize the differences between Icom and
 Kenwood, that
gets a little more complicated but it can be done.

Regarding your Linksys router: I also have multiple PCs here,
 connected to
the net via a LinkSys 8 port switch and cable modem. I found that
 the DX
cluster connection will time out unless you define your shack PC
 [the one
connected to the cluster] as a DMZ host IP address. The setting
 can be
found on the router admin screen under Advanced | DMZ host.
 This, of
course, involves some risk for this exposed PC, so make sure you
 have strong
login passwords and aren't running any programs that a hacker could
 use to
compromise your system. (inbound telnet, ftp, and file sharing come
 to
mind..) The good news about using the LinkSys router is that it
 creates a
nice firewall for your network to hide behind; the bad news with
 DMX Host
is that you are placing this PC in front of it. ;-(

  Hi,

I am a new user to DX4WIN so I wanted to ask some questions before
 I got
  myself into real trouble.

  1. How do I add T88, Palau to my countries list, I don't think
 it's in
my version 5.03 and if it is when I try adding my T88AY it comes
 up with
the country of Belau, OC 009, I don't think this is correct?

  2. Ok I have entered over 1,500 contacts that I have already got
confirmed and checked by the ARRL for credit on DXCC and 5 Band
 WAS and
now I want DX4WIN to show them all confirmed and credited for my
 awards
by the ARRL. What is the easiest way to do this, I do not want to
 loose
all the time I put into inputting everything in.

  3. What is the easiest way to configure my system so I can use my
 Icom
IC 756 Pro II and my Kenwood TS 2000 with the program. I want to
 use my

I had worked with Michael off line and his question is different than
 yours.

I see no reason why marking the first card received would be
 beneficial when
in fact, it is the card that was submitted and checked by ARRL that
 is
important. Until recent years, they did not even keep track of the
 band
 that was submitted.

In most cases that I am aware of, the cards are usually submitted
 when a
little over 100 are confirmed and for most of us, this was a paper
submission, followed up by yearly submissions since that time.

Since you have probably submitted many of the 293 cards, you
 probably simply
need to mark them as checked by mode, band, and mixed, if that is
 the DXCC's
that you have applied for. Since you have 5BDXCC, this implies that
 you
will need to mark over 500 bands also.

Since each time you make a submittal, ARRL now mails you a nice
 printout of
each of the modes, bands, calls, etc, that they have on their
 records, the
real problem usually comes down to making this OFFICIAL record,
 match the
CHKD records in DX4WIN. I have not come up with a good way to do
 this, but
after a little work, it is fairly easy to maintain.

I think Michael has something here. DX4WIN looks for the most
 recent QSO's
for submission. Well, I have a file box that I have been placing
 all of my
new DXCC countries QSL Cards in since i was licensed. That means
 the box
has the first QSO with a new country confirmed in it. There are
 293
cards in that box. I also did the same thing with 10 meter WAS when
 I was
a novice. I have never submitted for an award. So it would be nice
 if you
could make DX4WIN look both ways (either first confirmed or last
confirmed). I'm sure I am not the only one who has sorted his DXCC
countries this way. I also have 5BDXCC confirmed, 5BWAZ (189 worked
 185
confirmed) and close to 5BWAS worked,(Not really chasing this one).
 All of
these cards are just in file boxes and not in any order other than
 DX and
 State side.
So, can it be done that way? If not, how about in the next version.
 What
do the rest of you think? Sounds like a good plan to me.

So I hope that the following proposal makes sense, and covers most

To support this, I have added 2 more categories, a column in the
 spotting window
indicating the priority (1..8) and the ability to change the font
 color and the
 background color.

If you have any comments, thoughts etc. please reply to the

All the following categories take the station
band / mode settings and the award settings
for bands and modes into account. Also, when you
only allow for spots from certain countries and/or zones
that filter will be applied as well.

(Substitute country by Zone or by WPX prefix for the
  other color schemes available)

Modes refers to major modes only (Phone, CW and RTTY)

1 New country or callsign alert
Callsign alert is not limited by station or award band/mode
or spotter country/zone

 2 Country not confirmed
(The same callsign and band/mode combination is category 8)

 3 New band
Never worked this country on this band

 4 New mode
Never worked this country using this mode

 5 New band/mode combination
Never worked this country using this band/mode combination

6 Worked one or more stations using this band/mode
combination but none of these contacts have been confirmed.
(The same callsign and band/mode combination is category 8)

7 Did not work this callsign in this band/mode combination

 8 The rest
A. Worked this callsign in this band/mode combination
B. The band/mode combination is not enabled in station
   preferences or for the award
C. The spot came from a region (country or zone) that
   was not enabled.

[Dx4win] DX4Win and WinXP?

2002-01-14 Thread Duane A Calvin
I'm running it on XP and all works fine. If you upgrade from another
non-NT operating system, be sure to read Paul's note earlier on how to
reinstall one of the drivers. If you do a fresh install (the preferred
method for XP) all will work fine since the DX4WIN installer looks for
which op sys it is installing on and chooses the correct driver. I have
tested it with CW on the parallel port, and it works there (unlike
WriteLog!). Since the only time I do keyboard CW is during contests, I
haven't really given it a thorough wringing-out on DX4WIN.
