On top of that, Yaesu claim to be working with third party developers
to resolve the issue. This is not correct with regard to microHAM (one
of the developers specifically named by Yaesu) as OM7ZZ at microHAM
reports on the microHAM list that they have not been contacted by
Yaesu.

The issue (as documented on the main FTdx101 group at groups.io) is
that ALL "single parameter" commands received on the RS-232 interface
return an error message. The same commands received on the USB port
work correctly.

there is or was a firmware update from YAESU that corrupted the cat

The two CAT ports for microHAM "keyers" (microHAM USB Device Router)
must be set to the same rate. The maximum baud rate supported by
microHAM is 57,600 bps (TenTec Orion/Orion II/Omni VII).

If one needs waterfall/panadapter data from the transceiver (Icom),
use the transceiver USB connection for waterfall/panadapter and the
CI-V connection for the microHAM keyer (CAT connection). Details
are in the "Transceiver Settings" section of the Support area at

Before some start to argue about rigdrivers that doesn't work when you use

the USB connection with DX4WIN is "BULLSHIT"

It works perfect when you use the correct settings.

I have made so many drivers even that I don't own all the rigs.

First of all read this document and follow the procedure:

https://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/N6TV_Dayton_2020_Everything_USB.pdf

Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom (nearly all ways) installs 2 serial ports.

You need to use the correct one for CAT communication check your manual how
to.

In your Radio setup @ DX4WIN you will see that the max baudrate is

38400 for Yaesu,

19200 for Icom, limit by icom

57600 for Kenwood

Let me assure you that for the data we need 38400 baud is already overkill.

So if you use only USB connection set the baudrate for this port also on
what you see in DX4WIN

Higher want work..

The reason there USB serial ports are set to 115200 is when you use the
waterfall via there programs

Then you need that speed.

How about wsjt-x you may wonder how to fix that.

Or you have or buy a microHAM device that creates 2 CAT ports and can use
one @ 38400 baud for dx4win and the other @ 115200 baud for wsjtx

Or you also connect the serial port from the rig (if still available) to
your computer you can use this one for Dx4win and use the USB for WSJTX.

In the meantime I wrote also the FTDX10 rig file for test, if anyone needs
for test pse ask for it

The new FTdx101 firmware has a bug in handling the mode command (at
least "get mode"). If DX4Win is using MD0;/MD1; to read mode of
VFO A and VFO B, it will not be able to read mode. I have not been

Recommendation: until Yaesu release a fix, revert to the previous

Actually, the only thing necessary is a utility to extract the list of

My internal source says, "immediately and *retroactive*". The interim
CEO is charged with drafting the new rules and determining the proper
"effective date".  Most likely dates are 17 Feb 2008 (Declaration of
Independence) or 18 February 2008 (when the US added Kosovo to the
Department of State list of Independent States of the World:

My suspicion is that the DXCC rules change will be to add "Independent
States of the World" as an alternate to to UN Membership in (a) under
Political Entities - as "Dependencies and Areas of Special
Sovereignty" is an alternative to the list of "Non-Self-Governing
Territories" in

(c).

That is NOT true.  Just log them.  I have several in the log.

Paul,

Kosovo would be a *Political Entity* not a Geographic entity. The
precedents would be Palestine and/or the Republic of South Sudan.
"Discovery Date" is not applicable to Political entities. The
appropriate date is the "Qualifying Event" - the date on which the
political entity meets the qualification (e.g., Membership in the
UN or addition to one of the alternate "lists").

(c).

Re: [Dx4win] Keying Issue

2017-11-25 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

How are you generating the CW? As far as I know, DX4Win supports only
one Winkeyer (either the DigiKeyer or DigiKeyer II). If you are not
using the Winkeyer, Windows is not a real time operating system and
CW (or FSK) generated using a software timer can contain significant
jitter/missing or stretched elements.

is my dilemma. With the FT5000 when I send CW using DX4WIN my characters
are distorted. For example, if I send N3AF, I get N3AR. Here I run DX4WIN

I believe I have all my settings correct but can't figure out why the CW is
being distorted. Curious if anyone has encountered this issue.

Re: [Dx4win] CW keyboard Function keys wont key transmitter

May be a DX4win issue but it also doesn’t working in NN1M logger
which leads me to believe it’s a computer the computer is the

problem here and I don’t know what controls the F keys software on
the computer

Sounds like you are using a laptop where the function keys control
multi-media options (brightness, alternate screens, fast forward/
reverse, volume, etc.) by default and you need to hold a key marked
FN to use F1-F12. Most have a configuration application or a BIOS
setting to "flip" the multimedia/function operation. Unfortunately,
there is no standard trick ... you will need to read the documentation
for your particular computer.

JTAlert is logging already direct with : DXLab- HRD - Log4OM - AClog,
with this new updating of DX4Win WSJT-X is a MUST

In order for JTAlert to log directly to D4Win, you will need to convince
Laurie, VK3AMA to add that capability. To do so, he requires two things
- a documented API for inserting a QSO into the log and API for reading
the log database (to confirm the QSO has been logged, to scan the log
for "QSO B4" and to scan the log to update the JTAlert "Need" list).

The best way to accomplish this is for the developer to contact Laurie
directly and work out the details between themselves.

Select each temporary mapping (e.g., FAX -> DATA, FT8 -> DATA, etc.)
and click Delete

If you had temporary mode mappings and/or used a custom mode, you *will*
want to upload all the QSOs that contained custom modes to LotW again.
If you do not upload using the correct mode, any confirmations will be

good for DXCC (DATA) and VUCC (mixed mode only) but the confirmations
can not be used for WAS mode specific (e.g., FT8, JT65, KT9, etc.)
endorsements.

Using F8, search for the placeholder (substitute) mode you used, for
example, FAX. Now go to QSO | Multiple QSO Operations | Set Mode.
You will be presented with a dialog box that allows you to set the
correct mode or submode as needed for all the selected (found) QSOs.

You may also want to clear the LoTW upload date and set the LoTW
upload flag for these QSOs as well. The next time you Export for
LoTW, these QSOs will also be included, the mode field having been
corrected. This is just in case you made an error uploading these
QSOs to LoTW the first time.

If you added mode mappings to the Trusted QSL software, you may want
to remove those too. How to do this is beyond the scope of the DX4WIN
reflector.

Only microHAM "Keyer" series interfaces (microkeyer, microkeyer II,
digikeyer, digikeyer II, CW Keyer or MK2R+). USB Interface II and
USB Interface III do not provide the CAT/2nd CAT capability as they
have no internal microprocessor.

You can have two virtual serial ports (e.g. COM1, COM2) in your PC/Mac
with a single CAT interface.
Running DX4Win and e.g. fldigi or even HRD in parallel works fine.

Cort,

I use WSJT-X for JT65. It is also available as a free download. I setup
both WSJT-X and DX4WIN to run off of the same com port. But I do not run
them at the same time. When I want to work JT65, I click on Radio in DX4WIN
and click on Stop Radio, but I keep DX4WIN open. This disconnects DX4WIN
from the radio and opens up the com port.

I then open WSJT-X and it automatically connects to the radio. When I am
finished making a JT65 contact, the QSO is saved to the wsjt.log file. I
then import the log file into DX4WIN. Just go to File, Import/Export, make
sure ADIF is selected at the top, click on Import, go find the WSJT file in
your directory, double click on it, then when the window for Options for
Duplicates pops up, select Ignore Duplicate QSO. This will ensure that you
only import any new JT65 QSOs into your DX4WIN log.

Since the signal reports from WSJT-X incorrectly go into the Notes for this
Call field, I then cut and paste to move the signal report information from
that field to the Notes for this QSO field.

When I am done working JT65, I close WSJT-X -- which frees up the com port.
I then click on Radio in DX4WIN and Start Radio to connect the radio back to
DX4WIN. Again, not elegant but effective. BTW, it is fun to work weak
signal JT65 on 6m as well as the other HF bands. So you should give it a
try.

It would be great if Paul would someday start enhancing DX4WIN again. I am
sure many of us would like to see an automatic interface between WSJT-X and
DX4WIN like there is for MMTTY. We also need DX4WIN to support JT9 as a
mode. I might also add that an automatic interface for Fldigi would be
great for the many other digital modes currently available. But Paul has
been strangely inactive and incommunicado for five or six years now.

For the time being, this is a workaround that is cumbersome but pretty
foolproof. Good luck.

Dave, N4QS

SSB/vox works just fine. so went to options in mmtty and discovered
somehow under DEVICES it was showing -1, changed those to 1 and all
is back to normal again.

In the future, check the "SoundCard" tab in MMTTY | Config rather than
the Misc tab. The SoundCard tab provides a list - with "radio" buttons
for selection - of available sound cards.

Device -1 in the "Misc" tab is the Windows Default card (which should
*never* point to either Line or Headset Mic inputs of microHAM CODEC).
1 is something else (the SoundCard tab will tell you).

In any case, follow the "Configuring microHAM CODEC" section of the
microKEYER II Users Manual and *don't* open the MMTTY (or PSK) Window
of DX4win while running phone (if you expect to be able to record DVK
messages).

To the best of my knowledge *none* of the logging programs support
CW/PTT on a USB to *parallel port adapter*. The USB printer cables
typically use a special device driver to emulate a windows print
system and do not provide direct port access required by the LPT
CW/PTT drivers in the logging programs.

You can use a USB to *serial* cable with CW on DTR and PTT on RTS
driving a pair of resistor/transistor circuits - but that is quite
different than the USB to parallel printer cables and using LPT#.

As always, start with the example configuration for DX4Win and MK II

DX4Win's support for MMTTY is a bit strange in FSK in that you must
run MMTTY stand alone from the same path as used in DX4Win to configure
the FSK port and set Configure MMTTY | MISC | TX Port to COM-TxD(FSK)
because there is no way to pass the port/FSK setting from the DX4Win

so it is an issue with DX4WIN and microham router...

No, it is a configuration issue in DX4Win.

The preference CW tab has Device type set to WinKey,
Interface set to com4, external keyer set to com4.

You have configured *two devices* to the same port. Software CW keying/
PTT control and External keyer *MUST BE DIFFERENT PORT NUMBERS* as in
the example document. External Keyer port is the one used for Winkey
and must match the Winkey port in microHAM Router.

You probably have a similar issue with MMTTY if you have set a port
for RTTY interface (RTTY Interface =None). There is *no port set* for
MMTTY in DX4Win - it is set only in MMTTY.

Cort;
I have my WinKey connected to my Kenwood TS-990 and using DX4WIN. The
set-up has been working fine for over 1 year now when I run my remote
operation. You must have Com port communications from your computer to
the WinKey and that Com port assigned in DX4WIN preferences, CW tab.
The device type is set to WinKey.
External Keyer is set to the Com port that is communicating with the
WinKey.
I suspect you do not have the WinKey talking to the computers com port.

No ideas. When I prepared the example documents everything was
working exactly as documented with DX4Win 8.05 which was the then
current working demo. I did not install the demo on my newer
systems and could not test with any newer software in any case.

The typical cause of a can not open port message is an improper
configuration - more than one program accessing the same port - or
a port conflict - attempt to define a hardware port and virtual
port to the same number.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN UPDATE

2014-09-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

You've mentioned how DXLab can take an ADIF file, but does that
include one's QSL status for each QSO?

Yes, if that status is exported according to the ADIF standard. ADIF
specifies QSL_SENT (I,R,Y,N), QSL_RCVD (I,R,Y,N), LotW_QSL_SENT,
LotW_QSL_RCVD, eQSL_QSL_SENT, and eQSL_QSL_RCVD.

In addition, DXKeeper can update (match) DXCC credits with QSOs by
downloading the user's DXCC Record and will create placeholder (dummy)
QSOs for any credits that do not have matching QSOs in the log (e.g.
QSOs/Cards before LotW).

Just as an FYI:

DXLab can import a DX4WIN log. All you have to do is convert it to ADIF
and then import it. It can also compare your log with LOTW and flag all
discrepancies. When I ran a full comparison against LOTW, DXLab even
located data entry errors made by the DXCC desk when they originally
hand-entered the QSO data.
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/QSOImport

DXLab can also track the USA-CA awards.
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/USCountyStatus

I have never had the pleasure of using a software program that is
supported as well as DXLab. It is not unusual for a question or bug or
enhancement request to be made one day and have a response available the
next--sometimes even the same day.

The DXLab support group averages over 1,000 messages each month. This
doesn't mean the program is buggy, but that no question is too small or
repetitive to ask and receive an almost immediate response.
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/dxlab/info

Of course there is a learning curve, but the suite is made up of eight
separate programs that talk to each other. Start with one, get
comfortable with it and then add another.

I have been a DX4WIN user for over 20 years and finally made the switch
to DXLab earlier this year. DX4WIN is adequate for 90% of the amateur
community. It is an especially good fit for new or low-activity hams.
DXLab can take care of just about everyone.

DXLab is free from http://dxlabsuite.com/

2014-01-03 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Tod,

You don't need to send either Title or point value. That is
automatically calculated by LotW when the QSOs are uploaded.
LotW is the only way anyone can receive credit anyway - see:
http://www.arrl.org/centennial-qso-party

In order to compete in the Centennial Points Challenge, logs must be
submitted through Logbook of the World (LoTW). Logs do not need to be
changed from the normal Cabrillo (contest logs) or ADIF (general
logging file) files. The system will automatically look for
points-qualifying QSOs from submitted logs and apply them to each
participant’s Centennial QSO Points table. QSOs do not have to be
matched in LoTW for points to be achieved – this is an honor-based
QSO Party. We cannot accept any paper forms or information for the
Centennial Points Challenge.

managers, W1AW/#, W100AW etc. but will NOT be a listing of all (only)
ARRL members. I plan to to add this to the Membership List for DX4WIN
8.0x with the A designation (for 2014 only). So when one of these
stations is spotted, you will know.

It's a work in progress, and will take a few days to get a good list
-- the information is spread out among many web pages.

Re: [Dx4win] OMNI VI+

2013-12-13 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I have tried to connect the Omni using db25 to db 25 on my winxp
 computer.

If your computer has a 25 pin male serial port and the Omni VI+ has
a 25 pin male DB25 serial connector, I would guess that you need a
null modem (crossover) cable between the two. Try a cable with 2-3,
3-2 and 7-7 and see what happens. However, 25 pin serial ports are
quite rare and have been for perhaps 10 years or more - make sure
the 25 pin connector is really a serial port and not a parallel
(printer) port.

I have no idea what connections the RigBlaster Advantage provides
from its internal USB to serial converter provides or any suggestions
for configuring that product - I'd suggest contacting West Mountain
Radio support for information on using their product.

I suspect the radio's data is not on the connector pins as the software

Which model of RigBlaster and what is not working?

What functions - radio control, CW, PTT, FSK, etc. - are
you attempting to accomplish? Each RigBlaster model has
specific limits and none will do everything (at the same
 time).

Re: [Dx4win] CI-V Help DX4WIN

2013-11-19 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Default address for the IC-706mkIIg is 58h.

Make sure DX4Win baud and Icom menu 35 CI-V Baud are the same.
Default value for Menu 35 is auto but DX4Win generally requires
a fixed value - so set menu 35 to the same value as you select for
baud (I prefer 9600 or 19200).

I have no information on the eBay cable - there are so any versions
of questionable quality and no support - one would do better buying
an interface from a reputable vendor not the cheapest thing on eBay.

Did you install the LPT driver as shown in the help file? Search for

Print it to a PDF printer like PDF Creator or save a subset of
the log (those columns you want to print) to a tab delimited text
file, open it with Open Office Writer and save to PDF.

There are other word processing programs that can also save as PDF
or PDF Creator installs a PDF printer that can be used by any

Re: [Dx4win] true RTTY with my laptop?

2013-10-31 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

George,

Is there a USB to RS232 (serial DB9) dongle out there that will do
this, model and where to buy?

There is no inexpensive USB to serial dongle that will do 45.45 baud
any more. All of the commodity USB to serial UART/Bridge makers have
changed to match the higher data rates of USB 2.0 and in doing so have
dropped (due to the fixed maximum to minimum range) data rates less
than 110 or 300 bps.

There is one maker to US to serial products that still supports the
lower data rates - Digi International in their Edgeport line of
devices intended for commercial terminal use. I the single port
versions listed at Office Depot and Amazon.com in the $70 range. One
can occasionally find 1, 2, 4 or 8 port versions of the Edgeport
device used on eBay for attractive prices but it takes some watching.

Other than the Edgeport USB to serial device, any USB to serial
adapter can be used if you install the EXTFSK driver for MMTTY but
due to the software timing with EXTFSK you will see a +/-10% jitter
in bit timing.

Have you looked at the example configuration for USB Interface III
and DX4Win available in microHAM Router (Help | Download Documents)
or in the USB III area at www.microHAM-USA.com/support.html? It
contains all of the settings necessary ...

Note - with DX4Win you *must* set the CW PTT to VOX and close the CW
Keyboard to release the CW/PTT port for use by MMTTY/EXTFSK for FSK
before you can open the MMTTY Window. Simply closing the CW Keyboard
does not seem to release the PTT (RTS).

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win wish list (In addition to xmmt.ocx)

Proper logging of split frequency operation.
The Frequency box should always be the receive
frequency, i.e. the frequency that the DX is
transmitting on. The QSX (transmit) frequency
should be logged in a field separate from the
current Frequency box only if operating split.
(It is currently done in reverse from this.)

Frequency recoding is *correct* now ... one should
*always* log the frequency *on which he transmits*.
The frequency on which one is receiving should be
logged as the receive frequency or QSX frequency.

As a point of fact, the definition of QSX as a statement
is: I am *listening* for [call] on [frequency]

OVERDUE! Having to use a callbook CD is so
archaic and annoying, since they are out of
date as soon as you get them.

Automatic removal of old spots from the DX

Preferences option to control this behavior
would be nice. That would keep those who
like it the way it is happy, too.

Smooth, clean and transparent disabling of
the radio interface if the radio is turned
off before shutting down DX4Win. Automatic
re-establishment of the connection if the
radio is turned back on. Other programs do
this, e.g. WriteLog. An indicator on the QSO
window that the rig interface is not working
would be nice, e.g. a blinking red dot,
showing No Rig! in the frequency box, or
flashing frequency/mode info. But it should
not hang DX4Win and demand that the operator
click on a dialog box to proceed.

Well, that's my list of the biggest annoyances.
I am sure there are others that I haven't
thought of right now.

I recently evaluated DXLab and HRDeluxe.
Quite frankly, DX4Win is much better than
either of these in ease of use, award
tracking, award submission and many other
areas. Not to mention AD1C's efforts on all
the various database files! Now, if only it
could be updated to fix the above problems,

executable path within DX4WIN to the following:

C:\program files\MMTTY\2Tone.exe

The program tries to load within the MMTTY window of DX4WIN, but I get an
error message that 2Tone cannot run standalone and that it must run with
another logging program like N1MM. (The 2Tone documentation does say that
it can run with other logging programs.)

The installation instructions for 2Tone say to not modify the original
MMTTY.ini file and to leave it in the MMTTY directory because 2Tone needs
that file to run. So I am wondering why DX4WIN cannot run 2Tone as a
replacement to MMTTY like N1MM? I have also copied the XMMT.ocx file and
placed it in the DX4WIN directory.

Are there any other changes that need to be made within the DX4WIN logging

Can anyone else provide any assistance? Thank you.

Re: [Dx4win] Using 2Tone inside DX4WIN

2013-10-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

How big of a deal would it be for Paul to support the XMMT.ocx
interface?

I have no idea what is involved in a change to the RTTY interface
code in DX4Win. The interface is publicly documented in the MMTTY
Programmers Info and can be used freely. Developers of DXLab
Suite, Logger32, N1MM Logger and WriteLog have all either replaced
the traditional *.exe interface or supplemented it with the added
*.ocx interface for MMTTY and/or 2-Tone in the last year.

One benefit of including (or switching to) the *.ocx interface would
be the ability to replace the old PSKcore PSK31 support with MMVARI
which would instantly provide BPSK63/125 and MFSK as well as multi-
channel PSK/MFSK receive capability.

With 2Tone I can decode S0 to S1 sigs. MMTTY needs S3 to S4 sigs to decode
accurately.

2-Tone emulates the XMMT.ocx interface in MMTTY. DX4Win does not
use/support the XMMT.ocx interface so 2-Tone will not be usable with DX4Win.

I would also like to use 2Tone with DX4WIN. It already runs great
with N1MM. I have copied the 2Tone.exe file into the MMTTY directory
within DX4WIN as well as the 2Tone.ini file - but did not overwrite
the MMTTY.ini per the 2Tone installation instructions. I then tried
to replace the executable path within DX4WIN to the following:

C:\program files\MMTTY\2Tone.exe

The program tries to load within the MMTTY window of DX4WIN, but I get
an error message that 2Tone cannot run standalone and that it must run
with another logging program like N1MM. (The 2Tone documentation does
say that it can run with other logging programs.)

The installation instructions for 2Tone say to not modify the original
MMTTY.ini file and to leave it in the MMTTY directory because 2Tone
needs that file to run. So I am wondering why DX4WIN cannot run 2Tone
as a replacement to MMTTY like N1MM? I have also copied the XMMT.ocx
file and placed it in the DX4WIN directory.

Are there any other changes that need to be made within the DX4WIN
logging program for it to work with 2Tone? I tried emailing Paul with
DX4WIN and David with 2Tone, but neither one has responded so far.

Can anyone else provide any assistance? Thank you.

Is anyone using 2Tone in DX4WIN or is it even possible? I was ably to
work TT2TT for a new one on RTTY yesterday, but only after frantically
closing DX4WIN and opening N1MM where I have a 2Tone window installed.
It was remarkable to see the clarity of copy in 2Tone compared to

I don't know if the new version of DX4WIN has been upgraded to
function with Win 8, but it sounds like maybe not. I suggest you
talk to the DX4WIN guys about the problem. I checked the DX4WIN

user group a while back and did not find any info on DX4WIN with
Win 8. I continue to use my old version on my PC with Vista.

There have been no changes in the way Windows handles serial ports
between Vista and Windows 8. Any serial application that works with
Vista or Windows 7 should function without change in Windows 8.

Windows 8 is, at its core, Windows 7 with a new touch based user
interface.

2013-09-18 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

With Vista I have user accounts turned off, but a few weeks ago for
some reason I turned it on and found that DX4WIN came up with the
same ports message. Turned user accounts back off and DX4WIN came
back fine. Made me wonder if Win 8 has a user accounts control that
is turned on, but if so I can't find it or how to turn it off.

I assume you mean User Account Control which is art of Windows
security to prevent programs from writing (or deleting) data that
they should not. I too disabled UAC in Vista because the Vista
version was so buggy. However, it is not possible to disable UAC
in Windows 8 - but I have not found any reason to do so.

I do a couple things - DX4Win (the public demo) is installed in a
separate directory that is *not* in C:\Program Files or C:\Program
Files (x86). I install all of my amateur software in C:\Ham Programs
(C:\Ham would work as well). In addition, I run C:\Ham Programs\DX4Win\
lptdriver *one time as administrator* after installation and then I
run DX4Win *as administrator* the *first time only* so it can create
any necessary files in protected areas of the file system.

I do the same with other amateur software that requires access to
system hardware (serial ports, parallel ports, etc.) and have never
had an access problem through multiple installs on Windows 7 and
Windows 8 (including wipe the hard drive and reinstall situations
that I occasionally encounter due to misbehaved software).

USB to parallel adapters are not port mapped devices and as such
they will not work with software like DX4Win that use direct port
writes. Unless you are using a laptop with no expansion bus, your
best solution is an add-on serial/parallel card for either PCI or

This should demonstrate that the computer is properly connected to the K3.

Now to solve getting PSK-31 working in DX4WIN.

DX4WIN is installed at the root
FLDIGI is located in Program Files (x86)
FLDIGI sound output selections are:

Microsoft Sound Mapper – Output
Windows DirectSound Devices
Realtek Digital Output

Both the Microsoft Sound Mapper – Output and Windows DirectSound Devices
do work sending audio to the K3 using FDIGI.
Realtek Digital Output does not send audio to the K3 using FLDIGI.

DX4WIN Preferences, Control Tab, Audio Out does not have either the
Sound Manager or Direct Sound choices for PSK-31.

Where do I look to get the sound properly routed to the K3 using PSK-31

Re: [Dx4win] [microHAM] MicroKeyer2, DX4WIN, HDSDR and Omni-Rig

2013-06-24 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

NOW: I had an idea to make at least the spotting click work via the
CAT control from DX4WIN to HDSDR: Radio 1 preferences of DX4WIN were
set to Kenwood (protocol supported by HDSDR) on CAT COM 11 (created
by Router) and the HDSDR option was configured to control HDSDR on
the same CAT port.

You can not *under any circumstances* open the same port with two
programs. You *must* have two ports - either a software splitter
as provided by the CAT and 2nd CAT capability of microHAM Router
(and some other logging packages), or the logger must use OmniRig to
share control.

I have never used HDSDR and am not a regular user of DX4Win so you're
on your own with your custom software configuration. I know the
concept is workable as I have run DXLab Suite, N1MM Logger or WriteLog
with and NaP3 or PowerSDR IF Stage in that configuration on my own
system.

1. To listen with HDSDR and automatically

If you are trying to configure a splitter function, you could try
connecting HDSDR/OmniRig to Router's 2nd CAT port. Otherwise, your
logger developer will probably need to provide an OmniRig option
where OmniRig serves both HDSRD and the logger.

Note, if you use Router's 2nd CAT port, it will be necessary to set any
polling from HDSDR/OmniRig to the very minimum (slowest possible) to
prevent overloading the control channel

between Router and the MK II.

2013-06-22 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If you are trying to configure a splitter function, you could try
connecting HDSDR/OmniRig to Router's 2nd CAT port. HDSDR/OmniRig
will be limited to the rig connected to MK II but I assume HDSDR
is limited to following one rig anyway. There is certainly no way
that OmniRig can connect to two rigs via MK II. If allowing HDSDR
to use Router's 2nd CAT port does not work, DX4Win will probably need
to provide an OmniRig option - one in which OmniRig serves both HDSDR
and the logger.

Note, if you use Router's 2nd CAT port, it will be necessary to set any
polling from HDSDR/OmniRig to the very minimum (slowest possible) to
prevent overloading the control channel between Router and the MK II.

See the example configuration for DX4Win and MK II in Router (Help

in the microKEYER II area.

In all probability you are setting DTR = High in the radio set-up
and telling Router to use the same port for CW and Radio. Follow
the WinKey settings in the example.

In the HELP file it states that LoTW will accept a ADIF and CABRILLO
file. I did not find any prompt about a tq8 file and figured it was
not needed in v1.14.1.

*READ* the help file again! From the first page of the Introduction:

TQSL accepts QSOs in a log file whose format is either ADIF or
Cabrillo, which many logging applications can export.

That does not say LotW will accept an ADIF or CABRILLO file - it says
that trusted QSL will *sign* an ADIF or CABRILLO file. Trusted QSL
first *converts* any CABRILLO file to an ADIF and then signs the
ADIF by attaching the certificate and station location data then
performing a data integrity step (so that LotW can be sure the data
is not tampered with in the future).

Your ADIF is *not* uploaded directly - it must be processed by tQSL
before LotW will accept it. Period, full stop, end of story.

*READ what the documentation says*, not what you think is says.

I checked my ADIF file and it has the calls to up load correct. The ADIF

the TQSL to sign and upload. It did not do that. I tried to attach the

I have tried twice this morning to up load the file with no success. If

Hi Dick,
I have no idea why TQSL did not automatically send the file but you can only
upload a TQ8 file not an adi file to LOTW.

When I updated my TQSL program I just started the new downloaded file and it
removed the earlier version, kept all my certs, and was ready to go and it
did work fine here.

For the FT3K, this would probably work

Or one could use the same procedure as has been used for years with the
FT-990 and similar rigs by other software:

 RC; - Clear Clarifier
 MD#; - Set Mode
FA#; - Set Frequency (use split frequency)
 AB; - move frequency/mode to VFO B
 FA#; - Set VFO A frequency
 FT1; - enable Split

On the other hand, I do not see any significant differences between
the documented FT-950 and FT-3000 command sets. Has anyone tried used
using the FT-950 driver/setting or is the FT-950 driver making use of
some undocumented capability and thus likely to fail without notice
after a firmware update?

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support

2013-01-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

It might do a few neat things like the automatic upload to LOTW,
but the overall user interface is very poor. DX4WIN excels in many
key areas such as its fast and reliable database, user ergonomics,
integration with a wide variety of radios and assessories, etc.

I don't normally get into logger wars but can't let this pass.

Every logger has unique features in its user interface that some
like and that others despise. However, DXKeeper's user interface
is one of the best - hands down - user ergonomics are superb.

DXLab Suite uses a multiple application interface so many of the
features - particularly integration with transceivers and
accessories - are found in other parts of the suite. This
provides the opportunity for the user to learn one piece of the
suite at a time and install only those features he/she needs.
It also allows its developer to improve one feature without the
risk of breaking others.

logging program. I have even tried DxBase once or twice and always quickly
migrated back to DX4WIN. As mentioned, Jim's commitment to keeping the
databases up to date is also unmatched with any other program. And his many
useful utilities such as the Lotw to DX4WIN comparison application are all
added benefits.

DX4WIN's relative weaknesses are on the reporting side. It doesn't fully
support the online DXCC applications process and Lotw uploads could be
improved. The Submission report cannot be exported to ADIF format. There would
always be plenty of other enhancements that could be added, but Paul seems
content to keep the program stable at this point in time. Sometimes stability
and realiability are not all bad! But yes, I would like to see Paul work on
some enhancements and take more input and feedback from his users.

By the way, I recently tried to uninstall DxLab after testing it for a few
days, and it would not uninstall properly! So I guess you get what you pay for!

As a long-time user of DX4WIN (since V2.0) it pains me to say I am
considering changing to DXLab because of its apparently seamless
integration with LOTW.

DX4WIN V8 was released over three years ago, with the V8.05 being
released two years ago. Does anyone know if DX4WIN V9 will be adding
more LOTW support? Has anyone heard if there will even be a V9?

Re: [Dx4win] Verified QSL for Clublog

2012-12-12 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The ADIF spec has to be expanded to include award
status flags, like the flags at the bottom of the DX4WIN QSO window,
that are tracked separately from QSL status.

The ADIF Spec *has* been expanded to include Credit_Granted which is
a list of awards from an enumerated list for which the QSO in question
has been granted credit.

Credit_Granted (and Credit_submitted) were added to the fields list
with ADIF 2.2.3 (2009-04-14).

No. As I wrote to someone earlier today, what does 'V' mean anyway?
For which award? DXCC? IOTA? WAZ? It's an ambiguous status for a

view of the world. The ADIF spec has to be expanded to include award
status flags, like the flags at the bottom of the DX4WIN QSO window,

Also, I noticed that my ADIF output is in ADIF version 1.0 format. Is there a
way to upgrade this?

Paul has to change DX4WIN. What feature(s) of ADIF 2.x (or 3.x) is
DX4WIN lacking, other than the 'V' flag you ask about above?

Re: [Dx4win] LotW Backlog continues to grow ...

Delay keeps growing. Up to 8 days just a few minutes ago.

Agreed - 8 days 14 hours! At the current rate of growth the
delay will be 9 days before tomorrow. Here are the latest
numbers I have:

Upload Time Time Processed Elapsed Time
===
2012/11/23 18:002012/11/27 00:433 06:43:34
2012/11/28 22:322012/12/05 02:086 03:35:10
2012/11/29 18:382012/12/06 05:106 10:32:20
2012/11/30 00:582012/12/06 18:246 17:26:26
2012/11/30 17:042012/12/07 17:287 00:24:16
2012/12/01 08:202012/12/08 19:097 10:49:15
2012/12/01 12:302012/12/09 01:107 12:40:49
2012/12/02 05:002012/12/10 19:318 14:31:29

The delay is growing out of control - between 12/1 and 112/2
there were 2.5 times as many QSOs uploaded as LotW processed
and LotW has been processing an *average* of 11,000 QSOs per
minute or about 264,000 QSOs per day based on the information
on the home page.

If one plots a trend line, the delay is growing exponentially.
The trend indicates a file uploaded *today* is not likely to
be processed *for more than five weeks* based on the current
rate of growth in the backlog. Based on the processing time
for files uploaded at 0500z on 12/2, there were about 2.25
million unprocessed QSOs in the queue at that time - and that
was 48 hours *after* the deadline for submitting CQWW CW logs.
With the trend in growth between 11/25 and 12/2, the queue could
hold as many *10 million* unprocessed QSOs (although that is
unlikely)!

I know the folks in Newington are saying trust us, but their
performance - and complete failure to provide *current data* -
particularly the failure to provide accurate current status on
the size of the processing queue - makes trust very difficult.

and the difficulty of signing up their multiple portable operations.

There is absolutely no issue of singing a portable operation once you
have the initial certificate. It takes less than one business day
unless the operation is from a location that has specific access and
licensing requirements. Even then, it's no more difficult than sending
the same documentation to ARRL that would be needed to be accepted for
DXCC (typically copy of license and landing permit).

Anyone who complains about the sign-up process is too lazy to send
copies of license and ID (equivalent to ham ticket and drivers
license) with a valid mailing address and wait for the password to
be mailed to the address on the ID.

In many cases the process can be short circuited by providing the
documentation in person at one of the many international conventions
ARRL/DXCC/LotW staff attend on a regular basis.

You can use your US certificate to apply for a Canadian one (which
will be issued in less than a day in most cases), then you can create
locations anywhere in Canada where you've operated.

And if you happen to sign W1ABC/R (for Rover) or W9ZYX/0 and want to
use that with LotW you simply use your US certificate to apply for
another with the self-assigned modifier. Again, the additional
certificate will generally be issued in one business day (or less).

Yes, it's trivial. Once you have a US certificate, you just create
locations for each US-based grid square you operate from. No sign-up
required.
You can use your US certificate to apply for a Canadian one (which
will be issued in less than a day in most cases), then you can create
locations anywhere in Canada where you've operated.

Once you've gotten through the initial sign-up hurdle, additional
locations/entities/etc. are pretty easy. (It's only the rare ones
where this is a problem. Applying for a SV/A certificate will likely
be held up until you can present a license.)

Re: [Dx4win] PCIe LPT port problem

2012-05-16 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The Piexx box uses OTRSP (open two radio switching protocol from K1XM)
- it is not memory mapped. Unless DX4Win were to support OTRSP the
Piexx device will not work for CW, band relays, radio switching, etc.
The same is true with direct control of microHAM MK2R+ or micro2R if
one substitutes microHAM Control Protocol for OTRSP.

Works the same way as the microHAM router software without the need
to get the microHAM interface. Acts like a old time 'TSR' program
that sits in the background and does its thing like a traffic cop.
 Works great!

Unfortunately VSPE works nothing like a traffic cop (or microHAM
Router); it is more like a high speed merge of two very busy highways.
Data from multiple applications is simply combined without flow control
- much like serial ports connected using a diode matrix. With VSPE
there is no way to prevent polling or commands from one application
from colliding with those from another application and potentially
resulting in the loss of both. This is a particular problem with
applications that send two, three or four command at a time every
250 msec or less.

VSPE can handle a limited number of well behaved applications - those
that do not poll rapidly and/or do not overlap commands. However, the
number of applications (like DX4Win or SpectraVue/SDR-IQ) that are
well behaved are shrinking as developers continue to add more and more
control automation capability (be it simple S-meter and power level
polling to full glass transceiver interfaces).

DX4WIN has to have exclusive access to COM ports. So I think the
answer to your question is No.

I can use both DX4WIN and WriteLog with radio control (simultaneously)
using my microHAM interface. (other similar products probably have
this feature). The microHAM router software can create two virtual
COM ports that talk to the same device (ICOM radio). Each program
connects to a different virtual COM port (in my case, DX4WIN on COM3,
WriteLog on COM4), so each thinks it has exclusive access to the port.
If you spin the dial, the frequency is updated in both programs.

In the distant past (pre-microHAM), I remember using some kind of
software driver (think: TSR [am I dating myself?]) which could split a
single physical COM port into two virtual COM ports. I don't remember
much about it, unfortunately. You might be able to Google it. I
think at the time there were two, one required registration, one did
 not.

Re: [Dx4win] On-line DXCC Application is up

I can't tell if the application will let you upload multiple ADIF
files, or if you only get one shot. Maybe someone who does this can
add more details, and this can be added to the DXCC application
 note.

Yes, you can make multiple uploads ... subsequent uploads will replace
duplicated country/band/mode cards with data from the more recent
upload. As I understand it, an application will remain open and you
can return to it and add additional QSLs until you finalize it, pay
pay the fees and print everything for the card checker or mailing to
Newington with cards.

the QSLs that you want to submit with your application rather than
manually entering the information from each card. Use the Import ADIF

Here's how you can do this in DX4WIN:

First, peferform a DXCC Submission from the Reports menu (see
 http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/dxcc.html for help)

To export ADIF, you will have to use an F8 search. Make sure your QSO
window is fully expanded (using F5) so the Award Flags are visible at
the bottom. Now, if you are submitting any credits for the DXCC Mixed
award, use F8 to search for 'S' in the DXCC Mixed Award flag. Then
File | Import/Export, and after making sure ADIF is selected, File |
Export. DX4WIN will ask if you want to use the current active filter.
Answer YES. Once that's done, do the same for your DXCC Band and
DXCC Mode submissions. Make sure you don't over-write the ADIF files
you create before uploading them to the ARRL server (i.e. don't save
them all to the same file name). I can't tell if the application will
let you upload multiple ADIF files, or if you only get one shot.
Maybe someone who does this can add more details, and this can be

Or better still someone come up with a computer box that would

appropriate CI-V command that would be sent to the PW-1.

microHAM microKEYER II and DigiKeyer II provide an optional, isolated

for controlling PW-1 from any supported transceiver (Ten-Tec, Elecraft,

Unfortunately the majority of PW-1 amplifiers do not recognize the Band

between the ACC jacks and the controller board *and* the controllers
lacked the circuitry necessary to decode the band voltage. It was
only after Icom admitted problems with collisions and data corruption
on the CI-V bus when connecting both a logging program and PW-1 to a
single transceiver that they reintroduced Band Voltage as a means of
controlling band switching.

This lack of hardware capability in PW-1 was one of the reasons that
microHAM added auxiliary CI-V support first in the original microHAM

Mk2R/Mk2R+ and Station Master.

[Dx4win] microHAM Router Update (7.6.0) ...

2010-02-11 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The new update for microHAM Router - version 7.6.0 is now
available via the update Router link within Router, from
www.microHAM-USA.com/downloads.html or www.microHAM.com.

Significant changes include:

FTDI USB driver updated to CDM v. 2.6.0 for Windows 7/64.
Support for SteppIR SDA-100 controller (MK2R/MK2R+, MK II)
Support for Ultrabeam antennas (MK2R/MK2R+, MK II)
Software fix for the Yaesu M-Tune problem
Recovery for TenTec Omni VII timeout when the front panel
   shift button is pressed
A fix for the undocumented read status flag response in
   some FT-920 transceivers.
Added independent tail timers for PA PTT and LNA PTT
   (MK2R/MK2R+ and microKEYER II only)
Improved ability of K3 (patched) driver to deal with
   missing or delayed responses

All manuals have been updated and now include separate
audio level set-up instructions for those using Vista
and Windows 7.

There is no compelling reason for users of USB interface II,
USB Interface III, CW Keyer, DigiKeyer and microKEYER to
upgrade from Router 7.2.4 or 7.4.0 unless you have having
problems with Windows 7 or are using an Omni VII or Yaesu
transceiver. Users of microKEYER II and MK2R/MK2R+ will
find additional functionality in some of the auxiliary
control options.

Note: Router 7.6.0 contains an interface for linking an
auxiliary receiver to the transceiver (e.g., tracking).
Tracking is INCOMPLETE - there is NO SUPPORT for the
feature and there will be no response to questions about
its use or future development.

[Dx4win] RE: [Yaesu] AFSK RTTY with KAM

2005-11-17 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

John,

You are not doing anything wrong. The Yaesu transceivers operate
AFSK/PSK in PKT mode and FSK in RTTY.

If you want to use the RTTY mode setting on the Mark-V you need
to connect the FSK signal (Pin 5 of the 8 Pin DIN) and Ground
(Pin 2 of the 8 Pin DIN) to pins 1 and 4 respectively of the
4 Pin RTTY input of the Mark V.

Subject: [Yaesu] AFSK RTTY with KAM

Hi, I have an older KAM all mode TNC that I am trying to set
up for RTTY using AFSK. I have it wired for the Packet Jack on
the radio and the HF port on the TNC. I am using the Yaesu MarkV.
I am able to decode RTTY when I am in RTTY mode, but cannot
transmit unless the radio is in Packet mode. I know I must have
something wrong. Is anyone using a similar combination? Also,
should I be using the VHF port on the KAM instead of the HF
 Port? Thanks-
 John

[Dx4win] WinKey with USB ...

2005-09-01 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The new microHAM CW Keyer is now shipping. I have been told
that the initial batch left Slovakia for the US yesterday.
Additional units should follow on a regular basis.

What is the microHAM CW Keyer? For full details see:
   www.microham-usa.com/Products/ck.html

In short: CW KEYER is a powerful USB CW interface/memory
keyer based on the K1EL WinKey chip and microKEYER technology.
CW Keyer provides the CW features of the original microKEYER
and a USB radio control (CAT) interface in a small, readily
portable package for those with who do not need the audio
handling of microKEYER.

CW KEYERT uses a single USB port and is directly supported by
many logging and contest programs for both radio control and
CW transmission. CW KEYER also supports a PS/2 keyboard for
keyboard sent CW and control of the memory functions or a PS/2
keypad for message control only. The keyboard or keypad function
even when CW KEYER is connected to a computer. The user can
program up to nine extra messages into CW Keyer and use the
keypad to send them as needed even if the keyer is under control
of an application program (logger, contest logger, etc.).

CW Keyer has two RCA outputs on the rear panel ... although
they are labeled CW and PTT the outputs are driven by Pin3
and Pin5 of the WinKey chip and can be used to key two different
radios if supported by the controlling application. Alternatively,
the CW and PTT outputs can be used as inputs to a traditional
switch box.
