Bob, have you looked in the Save folder of your DX4WIN program directory (where DX4WIN.exe is found) to see if DX4WIN.tcp is there, together with your .dxl log files? When you move to Windows 7, you will need to reinstall DX4WIN anyway. Tod, you're right - I misspoke. The PIEXX unit takes OTRSP serial port commands via a USB vritual port and converts them to the appropriate LPT commands, rather than actually functioning as a USB to LPT converter. Randy's right about the USB-to-LPT converters. Fortunately, real LPT portcards are still available for the PCI-E slot in newer PCs, and are dirt cheap. While you're at it, you could get one with an LPT and 2 COM ports, simplify your cabling, and avoid the cost of the USB-to-serial converters you'd otherwise need. The purpose of this modification is to rearrange the internal logic in the DXD, so that everything functions properly, and the LEDs truly reflect the selected radio. I will also be using the DXD with N1MM, so I would want both logging programs to handle the radios the same way. I would not want to make the suggested Mod to the DXD to make it work with DX4WIN if it would then make N1MM operate in reverse. I wonder if Paul has a reason for not following the de facto standard? I would certainly want the LEDs to indicate the correct radio when using either program. Does anyone on the reflector use either of these products with DX4WIN? I'm amazed at the tone of voice in these e-mails. It was sometime in the late 80's or early 90's when I met Paul and became Customer 0 for DX4WIN. How many one-man amateur radio software products do you know of that are still offered after over 20 years? I am currently using Logger32, because it offers features that I need which DX4WIN does not, but DX4WIN remains on my PC. If Paul decides to release a version that has these things, I will certainly be back. The confusion continues. I'll save W4TV the effort of responding - USB-to-Parallel is what we're talking about here, not USB-to-Serial. David, you cannot key CW or do anything else involving switching individual lines on a parallel port through a converter. The only hardware I know of that will do this is the PIEXX SO2RXLAT, which costs significantly more than the most elegant solution, K1EL's Winkeyer USB. I have been following this thread with a mixture of nostalgia, sympathy, and annoyance. Getting the annoyance out of the way first, I've been appalled by the tone of some of the comments. Anyone who thinks Paul has gotten rich off this thing in its 20 years of existenceis deluding himself. When I wrote ham radio software, back in the 1980's, getting paid for it was something I regarded as a way of keeping score - that effort took thousands of hours, reducing my compensation to about 5 cents an hour. I was the first paying customer for DX4WIN, version 0.94, and am still up to date. I recognize that it is increasingly in need of updating, and there are somethings it won't do that I now need, but it is still a clean and simple to use program. I have tried three times to migrate to DXlab, thinking it would give me more of what I need, and each time I have given up, defeated by its complexity. I am currently working to get comfortablewith Logger32, which does most of the things on my wish-list. You can certainly do this at an ARC6 or VE7CC cluster node, Barry. I'm a little defensive about calling his software an aggregator though, lest it be confused with the RBN's Aggregator. W3LPL's draws only from NA Skimmers, and it then compares them with a list of some 1000 interesting DX calls. I successfully uploaded a 2099-QSO file to LOTW yesterday using 1.14.1, so I know it works. After you answered yes to theIs that correct? prompt, you should have seen a progress message reporting the QSO-by-QSO signing and uploading of the ADIF file. The big difference from previous versions of TQSL is that signing and uploading can be combined into one background operation, so it appears that something in your computer setup is preventing the signing step from happening. I just reinstalled everything following a Windows 7 event, and in restoring my DX4WIN Preferences I noticed on the Control tab that the Band Decoder type is greyed out. I've looked through the archive, and as far as I can tell I should be able to find vichw11.sys on the machine, and a DX4WIN port driver on the list of installed programs. I've run the program several times, and neither is found. I can't find a download on the DX4WIN web page for the port driver. I very much doubt there will be a problem. Rick, N2AMG is a very good programmer, who is responsible for the digital side of N1MM Logger. He works in Visual Basic, which requires a run-time component. Such components typically are carefully designed to be backward compatible, so that installing a later version will proceed without a hitch. I think their tech guy may have been blowing smoke, Paul(s) - I have a StarTech PEX1P PCIe Parallel Adapter Card - 1 Port, SPP, EPP, ECP (S262-8032) that I just got from Tigerdirect for a new Win7 PC. While I haven't tried to use it with the antenna switching control side of DX4WIN, it works fine doing the same job for N1MM Logger, which also needs to know the port address. If your new machine is a 64-bit Win 7 machine, as even nearly the cheapest Dells may be now, then you may need a different port driver. In any case, it should be installed in the same folder as your DX4WIN executable, so that definitely is one place to look for a solution. [Dx4win] Small bug in Winkey settings dialog
Unless I'm doing something wrong, there seems to be a bug in the Winkey settings dialog. If you change parameters and OK out of the dialog, the program gives an error message indicating that it could not open the Winkey serial port. I infer from this that it is trying to send the changed settings to the Winkeyer, but the main program already has control of the port (when the Winkey keyboard window is open, at least). Since the only way the Winkey parameters can be accessed (that I have discovered) is via right click in the Keyboard window, this creates a bit of a conundrum. Select ADIF and then File again in the smaller window and Export. It should prompt you with a warning that you are running a Filter, say yes that you want to export using the filter. Name the file something like yourcall mixed. You have just created an ADIF file for all QSOs eligible for DXCC Mixed credit. You have to repeat this process two more times -- after doing a F8 fileter for DXCC Band and then a filter for DXCC Mode. You should end up with three ADIF files named yourcall mixed, yourcall band and yourcall mode. Remember where you saved these ADIF files. 5. Finally, go to the ARRL website and log into the online DXCC submission page. I can't remember the exact navigation within the submission pages, but in essence you are simply going to import the three ADIF files one at a time. The DXCC online form allows you to import multiple ADIF files into the form. Very easy. When you get done, you should click on the View Submission button and compare all the listed QSOs in this report to the DX4WIN Submission report that you printed out in Step 3. When I did this, my online report matched the DXCC Submission report exactly. I then merely had to sort my cards to appear in the order as presented in the online submission form and then complete the submission. I took all of my cards to my local DXCC card checker. This process is a bit complicated and requires some advanced knowledge of DX4WIN. Paul could make this whole process a snap by allowing users to create an ADIF file directly from the Submission report once it is generated. I hope this helps. Good luck. It reported updating 3 files, but afterward the dx4win.cty and dx4win.awd files in the main program directory still reported their old modified date. It seemed to me that the updater ran far too quickly to have downloaded both those rather large files. [Dx4win] Messed up country window
Today I had a power outage, and when I restarted DX4WIN my log was OK, but when I try to open the Country window I get an error message, An exception occurred. Fixed column count must be less than column count. Anyone run into this before? How to fix? Same seems to happen with IOTA window, state window, etc., and when I open the Logbook window it displays a custom report for 10-10. Looks to me like I have some scrambled indices. [Dx4win] 8.10 wish-list - user-defined LPT port codes for antenna control
I use DX4WIN 8.05 and N1MM Logger. My automatic antenna switching arrangement takes advantage of N1MM's user-defined antenna BCD table to give me a very flexible auto antenna switching scheme without having to fiddle with wire OR connections and the like. In fact, I use the Ameritron RCS-10 switch and a simple LPT port interface to let me switch 7 antennas without needing a band decoder. It would be really great if DX4WIN offered similar flexibility. [Dx4win] Pre-emptive QSLing
I am getting back to DX4WIN after a couple of years away, and just updated to 8.05. In previous versions, there was a way to mark for QSL only those *DX* stations to which I had not previously sent a QSL for the same band/mode combination. I tried QSLsMark QSL Band/Mode, but it marked all QSOs, including W stations. Is there a way to do what I used to be able to do in one step? [Dx4win] Band decoder flexibility
Is there any prospect that in future the table of band decoder outputs might be made user-cpnfigurable? I am using a home-brew driver unit to take the LPT port BCD signals and source enough power to run an RCS-10 antenna switch. The trouble is that this system needs to have the LPT port output the same BCD code for 20, 15, and 10 so that I can run my tribander on one switch position - there is no option of using a wired OR connection as there is with a hardware band decoder. I use another freeware backup program, Syncback by One Bight Spark Software - it very nicely backs up selected directories and files from my computer and my wife's, over our network to my USB drive, on a nightly schedule. [Dx4win] Custom band decoder output
I have a simple interface between my computer and my Ameritron RCS-10 antenna switch, which applies the BCD output from the LPT port through a driver IC directly to the BCD lines going out to the remote relay box. Simple and cheap, compared to a band decoder, but what it means is that I must be able to configure the band output of the logging programs I use to send the same BCD code for 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10, so that the antenna switch will select my tribander when any of those bands is active. N1MM Logger has a very configurable band data output scheme, which supports this requirement plus additional antenna choices for 40 and 80 with their own unique BCD codes. DXLab has a totally configurable scheme, but it's a little daunting, compared to N1MM's simple, English-language configuration dialog. [Dx4win] QSLing first DX QSO on a given band/mode
I was the one who originally jawboned Paul into incorporating this function into DX4WIN, to enable me to preemptively QSL all DX contest contacts the first time I worked the station on a given band/mode combination. Up through version 7, it was found under Labels Mark QSOs for QSL by setting the Award dropdown to DX all band/mode It worked great! Unfortunately, this function seems to have disappeared in Version 8.
