[Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?

2002-01-01 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Interesting that DX4WIN no longer replies to the writer of the message, but
to the whole group.

I have DX4WIN and Writelog on an Athlon 1600 system running under Windows
2000. It is an excellent operating system. There are few advantanges and
lots of disadvantages to go to XP Pro, and I would not even bother with XP
home. You can buy Windows 2000 Pro as an OEM package for a little over $100
making it a very real bargain as well as a very stable operating system with
good support.

The LPT Issue is simply that Wayne chooses not to write a driver for the LP
port to support Writelog. Has nothing to do with the operating system and I
am sure he will eventually get around to it. In the meantime the serial
ports do everything the LPT ports do for me.

I am posting this to both Writelog and DX4WIN. I am building an new AMD
1500 system for use here in the shack. There has been a lot of discussion
of which operating systems work best or have problems (like LPT CW
keying). I am now faced with the choice of WIN98SE, WIN2K, WIN XP Pro and
Home. Which one should I use? Looking for advice. To conserve bandwidth
it may be best to send any thoughts or suggestions you may have directly to
me rather than posting it.

[Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?

2002-01-01 Thread Louis Sica, Jr.
Why is it interesting that DX4Win replies to the whole group instead of
just the writer of the message? The question was posted to the group, why
not respond to the group? Maybe others on the group would find the
information useful, too.

As far as LPT keying in Windows 2000, you just need to make sure the LPT
port you're using for keying uses the standard, old DOS interrupts and
addresses (example, LPT1 at I/O:378F and Int:7), and move over your printers
to your LPT ports that are I/O shared through windows. Besides that little
wrinkle, I'd say Windows 2000 is your best choice. Much more stable than
W98SE or ME. XP would be a second choice (I suspect you can't get W2K
anymore anyway), but I just feel comfortable letting everyone else shake out
a new O/S before I get it ;-)

[Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?

2002-01-01 Thread John Bednar
FYI, when you Reply To All with the current mail setup two
copies of the message are sent to the reflector. That's an
error.

With the current configuration I think we will see an increased
mail volume. We will also see messages like Hi Bob, nice
to see you in this reflector followed by messages from
users what should and shouldn't be posted on the reflector.
I'm sure everyone will get tired of this quickly.

If every user was interested in 100% of the threads, the current
configuration is appropriate. I'm sure this isn't the case.
Hence, I'd prefer the old system and fewer email messages (Reply
To Sender actually replies to the sender).

If someone posts a message thanking the user base
for the replies, simply send that person a message asking
for the email that was received. I've done that more than
once. I've also sent posters email asking for any direct email
they receive because I'm also interested in the subject.

Interesting because it is different from the way it used to be.

I agree that this is a discussion group and as such, the default reply
 should be to the group.

Private discussions should not be the default.

I find the routine of a message being posted asking a question, then a
short
time later a subsequent message posted that says thanks for the help in
resolving the problem, and no intermediate messages stating what the
 solution was - somewhat frustrating.

Perhaps, this default will allow more sharing of information.

Well, unfortunately they don't get tired of it on the Icom and 1000MP
reflectors, despite numerous complaints. I'd sure vote for a change back to
like it was, if we have a vote.

Wait til you hit the REPLY button and say something like Hi Bob, just
thought I'd let you know my hemorrhoids are improving... (or some other
personal revelation)! Of course, if you're awake/alert/paying attention and
can remember it's different than most other reflectors, you can still cut
and paste the individual's address from the reply and get around the
problem.

FYI,
I recently got an Athlon 1.4G PC. It would not run the Iomega ZIP drive.
WHen I called ZIP, they were very nice and told me the athlon
motherboard chip set will not talk to a zip drive. The local store
where I got the computer, EROLS, confirmed the problem and replaced
the PC aand gave me a P4, now all works good. I also had alot of driver
problems with the athlon.

$23 in Phoenix at Fry's. Middling quality. Top quality is, I think, $36.

Currently on the tigerdirect.com web site, PNY Premium 256MB PC133/100
SDRAM 32x64 168 Pin Memory is $39.99, up from a low of about $30. 256 meg
of 266 MHz DDR memory is $80.99. Both prices are absurdly low compared
with just a year ago, though not at their historic lows.

Loading up with RAM is still the best investment you can make in improved
performance.

These things sure aren't appliances yet, are they? Just by

replaced the motherboard in my wife's machine with a 900 MHz Athlon

 had
zero problems. FWIW, www.tigerdirect.com has some very inexpensive

 a

Win 98 SE, in a walk. Fewest problems with legacy software, such as
DX4WIN.
