For myself, DX4WIN exceeds my needs. Between DX4WIN,Clublog and AD1C there is
nothing about my 200,000++ QSOlog that I can't process.
Paul's eMail below from 9/6/2014.. A year goes fast. I'mlooking for my

Before answering too many private emails, I want to share my reply with all
of you:

We signed a contract on a house back in Aug-2012 with expected delivery in
Apr-2013. We sold our house in January 2013, and moved into a small town
house for a few month. Lots of stuff went into storage, including my
radios. But finally after a long wait, we are supposed to close on the new
house at the end of this month. Without the radios connected to my
development computer etc I never felt secure enough to release a new
version. But as soon as the dust settles, I expect to be back in business.
I have collected plenty of suggestions that need work, some of them have
been implemented already.

All DX4WIN users should feel good about the regular updates of the country
database that Jim, AD1C, provides.

First -- to answer AD1C's question I believe 8.05 was released in January
2011. Before that 8.02 was released in September 2009, 8.03 in December
2009, and 8.04 in May 2010.

Second -- to echo other similar comments I am a very long time user of
DX4WIN, since the late '90s. The fact is DX4WIN still works and does what I
need it to do and does it efficiently and reliably. But, my expectations are
simple: keep track of logs and QSL cards, help me track DXCC, and be my
day-to-day real time spot processing, logging, and rig control system. The
log management use is not to be underestimated: between my K7ZO log, my YN5Z
log, and NK7U's logs, the later for whom I have been the manager for 20+
years, I have about 400,000 QSOs to keep track of and I respond to 1,500 QSL
requests a year. Certainly there are more things I use a computer for in the
hobby, but I use other software for them. I did look at Log4OM a year or so
ago as a modern version of a logging program and software suite. It
certainly does a lot more than DX4WIN but converting my logs over was going
to require a huge amount of manual work if I wanted to retain detail beyond
basic QSO data. Yes, some of the Log4OM features could be added to DX4WIN.
But, this leads to the next point.

Third -- if we really want Paul to add features to DX4WIN we need to make it
worth his while. Someone's comment mention how using DX4WIN has saved them
from years of upgrade bills. However, this also means that Paul does not
have a financial incentive to spend time on DX4WIN. In other words, we are
getting what we pay for -- nothing. (Other than AD1C's amazing work which
earned him deserved recognition at Dayton.) So we should not complain. And
there are some among us who regularly spend way more on various pieces of
station hardware who would vocally object to a annual software maintenance
fee. The N1MM+ development team, who are motivated by something other than
money, have lowered our sense of the value and worth of software. That is
fine for them, but it is not fair to expect all other developers to follow
the same path. I have no idea how many DX4WIN users there are, nor how much
they are willing to pay for a new release of DX4WIN addressing the top
requests. I would encourage those that want improvements to DX4WIN to rally
the user base and present a financial case to Paul for the work. Other than
that, perhaps there is a way to open source the code and let others add to
it. And, if Paul rationally does not want to spend time on the software
going the open source route might be a great solution for him and for us.

Just my two cents worth.

If Paul is monitoring this list, please just be truthful with us regarding
the future of DX4Win. If Paul isn't going to move forward with this program
perhaps someone can figure out how to update the code and make it a more

Hi all
I have enjoyed DX4Win for MANY years, and I too would be willing to pay
for a heavy update.
What puzzles me (and many others I think) is Paul's silence on this
whole issue.
Over 3 years ago, Paul explained some of the reasons for the delay in
upgrading : fair enough. BUT he then said it was a matter of months for
changes.

His ignoring the list, and his customers, is becoming very unpleasant.

Paul, please say something !

fine for them, but it is not fair to expect all other developers to follow
the same path.

Thanks for jogging my memory, Scott. I believed in my heart of hearts
that there had not been a DX4WIN upgrade since I moved from MA to CO
in 2007. Obviously, I was wrong. Still, it feels longer than four
years since the program was last updated.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Status -- Observations

2015-10-07 Thread Duane Calvin
Strange comments in the last couple postings since I don't think I saw
anyone asking Paul to do work on DX4WIN as a free gift. I think we all
expect to pay if Paul were to work to include more recent rigs (FLEX is one
I'd like to see), modes, and some of the often-requested features. If we
all thought DX4WIN was a loser, we'd have moved a long time ago, regardless
of the pain. In many ways it still does more for me than some other
options, but now I have to work around some of its shortcomings more than
ever before. I'd happily pay for an update that solved those, and I think
most others would too, tho I can only speak for me.

That is

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Status

2015-10-07 Thread Mike Rhodes
Since I started this thread (again), I feel obligated to try and
clarify a couple of my comments.
As noted by Duane, I did not intend to insinuate that I thought Paul
should simply give us something for free and have willingly paid the
more than reasonable upgrade fees thru the years. I also recognize the
fact that a full-on rewrite of the program (which would probably be
required given the new coding tools and OS's available) would surely
cost more than an upgrade.
I also must admit that my current level of operation has not
motivated me beyond a casual glance at some of the more recent logging
applications.
What DOES bother me though, is the COMPLETE LACK of COMMUNICATION
from the author. Even if Paul were to announce that 8.05 is the final
version of DX4Win, I am not sure I would abandon the program. However,
it seems a bit disrespectful of his user base that we have been told
nothing, other than a comment many months ago that some personal issues
had finally been cleared up after several years of struggle.
I also recognize that a rewrite of DX4Win would be a HUGE commitment
of time and resources which just may not be available. If that is, in
fact, the case, a simple acknowledgement would go a long way in soothing
my (and probably others) slightly ruffled feathers, not that my 'ruffled
feathers' are of any significant consequence.
I'm hoping this note comes off as constructive criticism rather than
bashing. If it appears to any as bashing, I apologize in advance.
On a final note, I have to assume that there are expenses involved
with maintaining the DX4Win (and the AD1C) websites and this list. I
must guiltily admit to having never contributed directly to any of the
above. If someone could advise appropriate amounts and methods, I think
a number of us might be moved to attempt to help defray some of those
expenses.

Agreed. However, understand that if you plan to move all your QSL info,
credits, etc., to a new logger, be prepared to do a lot it manually
(whatever you can't recover from LOTW award credits). That, and not finding
another logger that can present all the information I need in a very small
screen space are what has held me back from moving. I'm hoping against hope
that Paul will eventually have time to do some upgrading for new rigs, etc.

[Dx4win] DX4Win Status

2015-10-06 Thread Alan Walters
OK. I haven't been here since the "beginning," only since v5. I moved from
Log Windows to DX4Win in the late 1990's when Log Windows was having
problems with authors and support, and I have not regretted the move one
instant.

Sure, there are some who wish various enhancements, mostly ability to record
the new digital modes. I for one would like the see the membership of a
call propagate into the logging window to help me when it comes time to
decide how to QSL. I am sure there are others with various wants. Life is
tough, and sometime requires work arounds.

But please tell me, what is it in DX4Win that doesn't work? And with AD1C's
wonderful support page, what is it you don't know how to do? Paul has a
"day job," and maybe he will get around to an update; maybe he won't.

If not, I think you are still using the best general logging package in
Amateur Radio. Sure, there are others that are coming along, and if you
want to go through the pain of transition and then the pain of the learning
curve, have at it!

Best wishes to all,

Hi Roger,
Tried your suggestion, but unfortunately it does not work:

enter wrong callsign, enter report, enter name, receive correct callsign,
cursor back to callsign field, correct the callsign: name is lost!

 Hi Paul
Thank you very much for taking the time to give us these explanations.
 We sympathize with your difficulties.
Many requests have been made over the past few months, so good to read
you will be working on some.
DX4Win does basically what I expect from a logging program, and I do not
intend to change to, for example one that has
   updates almost every day
 (a pain in the neck)
We will be looking forward to reading about the implemented
chagesupdates when your time permits, at keast we know something will

Keep up with the good work ! Thanks and also thanks to AD1C.

Hi Paul! Thanks a lot for a good news! I'm using DX4WIN for many years
and I don't like to change my logbook software. If you will release a
new version (9.0 ?) I'll pay for upgrade for sure! Please don't forget
some long awaiting features:

1. More then one antenna rotor support
2. More easy procedure for LoTW upload/download
3. If I entered Name or IOTA ref. etc and after that changed call sign
(even one letter), all field are lost. Please make possible to turn
off this function.
4. Auto reconnection to DX Cluster if connection was lost and auto
connection on start up.
More ???

With best regards,

Re: [Dx4win] Status

2014-09-07 Thread Art - W6KY via DX4WIN
Hi Paul,

About 20 years ago several of us in the Southern Calif Contest Club and
the San Diego DX Club discovered DX4WIN. All of us had some rinky
dink DOS programs we were using and changing weekly. We all jumped
on board and it was magic! It still is! N6ND(SK) led the charge.

Personally I like a few extra steps to do certain functions in DX4WIN. Has
saved my butt many times as I get right to the point of saving and realize
how screwed up I have things.. Automatic, there is no back out.. I am
71 and it actually helps to think about what I am doing...

Daily updates, bring up the program, what the hell is this??? It either doesn't
work anymore or you don't recognize what you are looking at. Example:
N1MM. Love the program, but they used to upgrade it several times per
week.

My only request, as I have grown to love digital, is better PSK(multiple
decodes)and add JT-65 and JT-9...

So, after 20+ years, several upgrades (all good) I am not 'hanging in there'.
I am extremely pleased and will use DX4WIN till I go SK.

But, but, but I do have $$ set aside for ver 9.0 :)

200,000+ Q's since 1989 (and a few hundred from 1958-1960 and 1968)
