Subject: [Echovnc-users] EchoServer for Linux version 1.67
Hello! Version 1.67 of EchoServer for Linux is now available:

 http://www.echogent.com/download_echoserverlinux.htm
 or
 ftp://ftp.echogent.com/EchoServer/linux/bin

The primary focus of this release is improved stability with very
large connection count (1,000 to 10,000 users). As described in the
README file, the limiting feature of your Linux PC (in terms of how
many echoWare clients it will accept) is the maximum number of open
 files. To see that limit:

 % ulimit -a

To change that limit, try this command as root, prior to starting up
 your echoServer:

 # ulimit -n 4096

For upgrading users, any registration keys you have for earlier
releases still work in this one; just swap in the new binary into your
 existing installation.

 Comments or suggestions welcome.

 cheers,
 Scott

 Subject: [Echovnc-users] EchoVNC 3.0 beta
Heyaz. After years of delay bordering on abandonment ... the 3.0
update to the EchoVNC server for Windows is now available for beta
 testing:

 ftp://ftp.echogent.com/EchoVNC/windows/beta/

Please just download that file, unzip it, and double click on the
 setup installer.

 To use the application:

 1. Select what type of remote desktop application you want EchoVNC to
help with (VNC, Remote Deskop, or RAdmin).
 2. Add an echoServer connection. By default it connects to our demo
echoServer, but you can of course use your own.

After that, it should be ready.

Please note: in this version, EchoVNC is more than happy to work with
any VNC server you already have installed. So if you're a big fan of
RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC (and who isn't?), please feel free to
*keep using that server*. EchoVNC will simply help you make firewall-
friendly connections to it. If you're not running a VNC service
already, EchoVNC comes with one, and will kick-start it as needed. Try
it out, you'll see what I mean.

In this beta, you can also register EchoVNC as a service. Right now,
the settings you create in standalone mode don't get copied over. Am
fixing that now, so please feel free to suggest this as an
 improvement. :)

Any questions or concerns, please let me know!

Re: [Echovnc-users] Install Linux Server without Root Access

2008-11-12 Thread Dan Horning
as i recall from the agreement - you cannot use that type of server to
run this kind of script... but the fact is you shouldn't need root to
actually run the script, however you then cannot affect runlevel.

mostly the issue is the AUP with 11 - be very cautious of it.

Would this preclude me from installing a server there? Where can I
find the requirement for Linux EchoVNC server? Thanks.

I have to say that i've always found ways around this ... but maybe on
two levels... a daemon style mode which will self restart (useful on
bogged down pc's that you have to kill a ton of services on (ie
infections)) and another option to not install as service but to startup
on a one time load style method ... being though - this would need to be
two things... (using gotomypc.com as the example - the support desk
version) 1) the remote controller would need this functionality to
request this built in on the fly which would then add it to the CU - RO
startup mode... (of course reusing the same settings and also saving the
authentication token (PIN#) to make it the same so the tech doesn't need
to figure this out on thier own... and then 2) ask the user for the
login so the restart can continue unattended... (and then restore the
autologin status to the prior mode on instantvnc)

and thanks for everything you do scott... it's becoming very quickly an
application that is extremely useful for me and my clients... (i'm still
doing that load testing and have loved the higher stability with each
beta and RC and release)

oh btw - guess what ... i have the client running perfectly under WINE
in linux... next up finding a way to make the server mode work
(integrating with the VNC server in ubuntu or other X11 mode). it's
actually pretty simple... but appears complex until you see that one
tiny thing that is like wow. (like doing the rc.d scripts ... )

always trying to maintain a connection to my echoserver.

why not... the connections take up a little more than a ping every so
often to keep the link available until you open a connection you
shouldn't have much if any of a load on your server from this.

... or am i wrong on that?

Yep, you could connect using RDP with EchoVNC. It's also possible that
connecting to an EchoVNC instance (running as a service) will display
differently
than InstantVNC (running as an application).
Weird.

[Echovnc-users] Silly questions and source code

2008-01-22 Thread Dan Horning
I plan on enhancing the echovnc/instantvnc controller to have a few more
features like those within logmein - rescue.

First - has anyone started this (I plan on keeping the entire thing
completely open source and updated as we want to use it for providing
advanced support to our own clients - and I want to kick logmein out of
the picture)

What I'm looking to get is a bit more bleeding edge and I wondered if
there is a public svn/cvs repo with the following;
Instantvnc, EchoVNC, and if available source for the dll (as I have a
team that knows the relay systems inside and out that might be able to
optimize it even more than you already have (it's quite nice and doesn't
seem to take up too much processor even at reasonably high loads) - but
that last part isn't really needed.

So in short - I'm looking to gain r/o access to the svn's that I can and
use that information to create a slightly more powerful support tool.

And I must say - I was very happy to see how well the server works -
thanks for creating a great service.

And for those curious - I've got a few ideas to build a streaming relay
server to integrate with vlc so keep your eyes open for my updates.
