[Elecraft] a long shot

2005-02-27 Thread Slater Tubman
I have spent a day trying to configure my Mac PowerBook G4 via a
RIGblaster plus to key my K2 for CW transmission.
The program I am using is MultiMode v 5.4.0 The RIGblaster is jumper
configured for Elecraft. I have tried transmitting by the Key Out on
the RIGblaster to Key on the K2, and also using the microphone input
through the RIGblaster. No luck either way.

Receiving is no problem. Transmit is the rub. I have read the notes
from the MultiMode web site (carefully, I think) but no joy. There is
one somewhat grey area for me and that is in regard the port setting in
preferences in MultiMode.

As I said in the subject line, this is a long shot, but I thought that
somewhere out in that wonderful knowledge base known as the Elecraft
reflector there just might be someone who has my answer and can tell me
what I overlooked.

Even this temporary setback cannot dim my pleasure with the K2.

Will have a lot of pleasure in building this one! 4 band version, as
well as the 2-band filter module and the KNB-1 noise blanker. Will
eventually add the autotuner in a later stage. I recently completed
the KX1 with all options, so I know I´ll have a ball building the K1!

[Elecraft] KPA100 audio problem

2005-02-27 Thread Neal Campbell and Sarah Ferrell

I assembled my kpa100 during the week, what a nice experience!

The functional operation of it is fine, aligned well, tx audio is good,
temp, etc. all fine.

The problem I am experiencing is with the audio.

If I plug the audio cable only into the k2, audio is as good as the
original. But if I plug either the 12v line or the rf line, it sounds
very tinny and distorted. When I connected the speaker plug from the
orginal k2 top and then plugged in the 12v and rf line from the kpa100,
no audio distortion. I assumed I might have wired my speaker backwards,
but even with both connections free from the kpa100 speaker, it
distorts whenever I plug in the 12v and/or rf cable. So its something
on the kpa board itself. The problem is there really is not much in
terms of audio circuitry on the KPA.

Any ideas?

RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 audio problem

2005-02-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Neal,

Try plugging an external speaker into the KPA100 external speaker jack - if
my guess is right, you will find the same behavior on that speaker too, and
will confirm my speculation that you have the wires on the AF cable
reversed.

Do check the orientation of the wires from the AF jack to the KPA100 board.
The side of the cable closest to the right side panel (when the jack is
plugged in) should end up at the 'AF' pad on the KPA100 board. Note that the
'copper/silver' conductor usage specified in the KPA100 is opposite that
used in the base K2. It sounds like you have them reversed and you are
shorting out some of the audio when you plug in the ground connections on
either of the 12 VDC of RF connectors.

If the cable wiring is not the problem, I think you should be looking for a
solder bridge from the AF line to something else on the KPA100 board. You
are correct, there is not much to the speaker wiring on the KPA100 board -
just signal traces and the external speaker jack.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] Update: K2 # 0771

2005-02-27 Thread Steve Jackson
Elderly, but mojo-filled and fully loaded K2 #0771 has
received new updates of T1 and T2 from the Toroid Guy,
and new crystals in both the SSB and CW filters.

Results? A fabulous radio made even better ... which
is mighty hard to believe, but it's so. Better
stop-band rejection, better inter-filter tonal
matching on CW, lower passband loss, nicer sounding
SSB.

Also, touching up T1 and T2 (especially, mounting T2
slightly elevated form the board) improved TX
efficiency by over 20%.

This radio was built in 1999 and is STILL getting
better!

I have had, and have sold, no less than eleven rigs in
the time I've had this Elecraft, including two IC756
family rigs and an Omni VI+. I *defy* anyone to show
me another exmaple of continuous radio improvement
(without total radio relacement) happening elsewhere
in hamdom, ever since the Signal*One.

I may be preaching to the choir here on this
reflector, but I'll say it to anyone willing to
listen: if you are not yet a K2 user, you are simply
NOT getting all the enjoyment out of the hobby that
you could. Moreover, a brand-new K2 costs LESS than
just the FIRST YEAR DEPRECIATION of any rig that is a
close peer in performance.

Re: [Elecraft] Update: K2 # 0771

2005-02-27 Thread Larry Phipps

Due to the huge number of projects I'm in the middle of, I decided I
don't have time to build a kit, so I bought a used K2, serial # 568. It
already has some updates, and it will cost me about $100 to add the
remaining updates and mods I think are important. That's amazing.

The first thing I will do is the 2nd filter passband flattening mod,
since I have the parts in my junlbox to do that. The different tonal
quality between usb and lsb is one of the few things that bugged me
about by new acquisition. In the process of looking at the passband
shape using an older (free) version of the Spectrogram program, I
decided to take a look at it using the spectrum display in MixW and
Hamscope... two PSK programs I have.

Of the three programs, I definitely like MixW the best, Spectrogram 2nd
best and Hamscope the least (because it doesn't have markers... at least
in my version). MixW is fast, has good dynamic range and allows for up
to four markers. Now that Sprectrogram is no longer free, I thought I
would point this option out to folks who happen to have these other
programs.

BTW, I was able to get more than adequate noise signal by cascading a
couple external broadband preamps I have on hand.

[Elecraft] 20m ECN 28 Feb 05Z

2005-02-27 Thread Fred Jensen
N0SS was 40 over on both the K2 and TS850 -- tks for the QNI. As is
usual between Portland and No. Cal on 20m at Z, Kevin was about 219,
as was I for him, I'm sure. I took a chance and split the antenna for
receive into both the K2 and TS-850, whose receiver isn't all that
shabby. I could hear Kevin and the really weak ones on the 850 ... I
could copy some of them on the K2. Fairly impressive test, at least for
me.

If anyone is around on 20, 30, and 40 on Fri 3/4, I will be in Tuscon at
the pool at the Airport Holiday Inn during the day with my KX1 signing

[Elecraft] K2 Assembly part 3 check: Power output on transmit varies

2005-02-27 Thread kg4htt
Well, it's all put together and I'm running through the checks.
Everything seems to be fine, except for one thing - the power output is
inconsistent on transmit. It doesn't fluctuate much once it starts, but
it starts at different levels. For example, when you set the power level
to 2 watts, maybe one out of 5 times it will transmit 1.9 or 2.0 watts
when you push the tune button. Other times, it will transmit 2.5, 3.0,
maybe even 4.0 watts, and hold it pretty consistent (+-.1 watt) for the
few seconds I hold it in tune into a dummy load. Wherever the watt
meter shows, it corresponds on the MFJ dummy load, so the power is going
into the dummy load... it just doesn't seem to reliably put out the right
amount of power.

So when I do the amp checks for 5 watts, it reads high, because it will
actually be putting out usually 6 or 7 watts. So it isn't drawing too
much current, per se, it's just that the output doesn't correspond
reliably with the power setting. Usually it is 1 to 2 watts higher than
the power setting, but just to be confusing, every so often it is exactly
right... rarely, it may be low, but will again be stable... or climb
slowly.

On the positive side, the receiver seems to work good. With good advice
offered here, I picked up the XG1 signal generator and the noise
generator. I'm going to pick up Spectragram and re-do the filters. With
the XG1 I can pick up the 28.160 harmonic, even with the attenuator on...
it's extremely quiet, but it is still barely detectable. All the
controls seem to work, the peaking of the various inductors and caps
seems to go as it should. I've looked closely at all the toroids in the
XMTR section, and even re-did T2, because the leads didn't look the best.
Same problem. I've checked the toroids for continuity by touching the
pad, and not the wire, to verify that the leads are conducting through
the pads.

Could this possibly be a I/O Controller issue? When it gets the power
level correct, I notice that there sometimes is a very quick blip at
transmit - for example, I'll have the power level set at 2.0 watts, and
it will say something like 4.0 watts for just a tiny fraction of a
second, then immediately stabilize at 1.9 watts... so it's as if it
sometimes jumps in and corrects the power level correctly, and other
times lets it go wherever it starts.. .usually not too high, no HI
CURRENT problems at the 2 and 5 watt level, but the power out seems to be
1 to 2 watts higher than the power setting... but not always.

Thanks again. I enjoyed listening a bit to the bands, I'm getting close
now... probably could use it like this, but I'll wait until I get things
all set up right.

That's because in TUNE the power control circuitry in the K2 is disabled,
Vic. The power will jump all over the place based on several things,
including the load.

Key the rig in CW if you want to see the power stay stable. Still, it'll
shift a little bit as the finals warm up.

That brings up another point that surprises ops sometimes. The K2 sets the
output power by measuring the RF voltage delivered to the load, compares it
with the power level you have requested with the POWER control, and adjusts
the gain of the transmitter circuits accordingly. So, when you first key up
the rig after turning the power on or after adjusting the POWER setting, it
will NOT produce the expected power for a moment until the circuit has a
chance to monitor the power out and adjust the level accordingly.

When doing a Power On, the default is minimum output. That means that after
turning on the rig, if you hit the key you might see a short delay before
the RF appears. It might be enough to lose several dits if you are starting
with dits on the key. Same is true when you change the POWER setting. If
you turn it up or down, the first few dits or part of a dash will be at the
original higher power before the circuits react.

Also, since the power is monitored by an RF voltmeter, the accuracy of the
power display is based on the accuracy of the load. The closer it is to 50
ohms non-reactive, the better the power accuracy.

Looking at the reviews in QST - the noise floor on the TR-7 was

The noise floor on the K2 was measured at -137 dBm on 80m, and -138 dBm

So, you're saying you want to WORSEN the noise floor by 4-5 dB?

The noise floor is low enough on either rig that atmospheric noise
should dominate the receiver, at least 20m and below.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for February 27-28,2005

2005-02-27 Thread Kevin Rock
Wow, great turn out folks to set a NEW RECORD. 33 checks total for both
nets!  We also had four NCS folks running the net: N0SS, Tom; W0NTA, Dick;
K1EV, Bill; plus yours truly. Made for a lot of interesting signal
passing. I tried to get Rick and Bert hooked up again. I could hear both
of them and so could Tom. I know they did not quite make contact during
the net but I know they would try afterward. I hope they got it done so
Bert can claim WAS.

We did not get any new states tonight but there were a number of new
faces. Seven of them to be exact. Conditions were interesting because I
could hear the East Coast rather well while they were just hopping over
Tom in Missouri. Then I got a fill on a serial number from Dick for Tim
in Michigan. Ric's K1 was booming into Oregon at S8 levels while Rick's
KX1 was doing very, very well with S5 to S7 levels. Both Tom and Bill,
K1EV were at painful levels for me so I need to get a faster finger on the
RF gain!

40 meters was noisy but we still had quite a turnout there. Twelve folks
and four of them new to the net. The best one was a Tuna Tin 2 from
Virgina. Tom caught the particulars but I got about half copy on Bob's
mighty 150 mW! If the noise had been lower copy would have been fine. It
was not his rig but the QRN. Great job guys.

W7WEL - Bill - ID - K2 - 4001
N7NLU - Karl - OR - K2 - 4227
N7VS - Steve - OR - ? Sorry, we should have gotten your information :(
W9JOP/4 - Bob - VA - Tuna tin 2 at 150 mW I had ~50% copy on you!!
K5GUS - Dan - TX - K2 - 4426
K8NWD - Tim - MI - K2 - 076
WA7BOC - Roger - WA - K2 - 755
W9OPV? - ? - ? - ? Very weak signal as the noise came up strongly.
Sorry :(

At the end of the second net N7VS called back but copy was pretty poor. I
thought he was in Washington so I tuned my NS G5RV and tried again. No
better. Now I find he is in Portland! Well now I know the problem. I
should have been using the two cans and a string method! Can't wait to
get some rope and hoist that large loop into the fir trees. Then I'll
start the very belated 80 meter Elecraft Net. Then I can work poor Fred
down in California without a 2000 mile relay :) But soon he will be in
Tucson sipping cold drinks and sending CW with his KX1 (new rig?? what
SN?) from poolside. Can't wait to harass him while he basks in Arizona
sunshine and the infamy of his wee rig :) I can reach AZ Fred!!
The Elecraft Net was fun as always. But without the help of the three NCS
folks (Tom, Dick, and Bill) it would not have been as easy. Thank you
very much guys!

Any errors in the above lists will be remedied both on the Reflector and
in my database as quickly as I receive the errata.

Thank you and 73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Re: [Elecraft] Birdies on 20m

2005-02-27 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hello Michael,

Because the QRN here is very low, I use the preamp most of the time on 40m
when DXing, birdies are important to me, and for some time I have been on
a Birdy Hunt.

If all the oscillators in K2 are working well and on their correct
frequencies, it is not possible to move a birdy (in frequency) because the
IF of the K2's receiver is fixed at say 4915kHz. Although there are others,
the three major causes of a a birdy are when one or several of the
oscillators, fundamentals and / or harmonics combine to produce a signal at
1) The receiver's tuned frequency 2) At a spurious response frequency of the
receiver (the so-called image is only one of these, there are many more) and
3) At the IF. I shall not complicate things by bringing in the isolation
between mixer ports or re-mixing.

In cases 2 and 3, IF the birdy signal gets in near the antenna connection,
then the selectivity of the RF tuned circuits usually, but not always, helps
to make the birdy weaker. IF the birdy gets in after the tuned circuits, say
near the mixer input, then in most cases the tuned circuits will not help to
make the birdy weaker. And I have found that many birdies ARE getting in
after the tuned circuits, in the area of relays K16 and K17 on the RF board.
Some of these birdies are created by a combination of three oscillators (or
their harmonics) falling on a spurious response. So life is hard!

Although I had started to re-engineer this area, I cannot give you any
cures at this time because of an accident and I am walking like a donkey on
four legs ! And the job will be difficult. And to be sure, when that is
fixed another problem will appear.

It interests me that apart from Grobmutter at 14.363, I can only just hear
your other birdies but have others. I have suspected for some time that the
mechanical construction of K2 might be playing in the birdy game.

My apology for a long story, but I would suggest that you avoid your birdies
for now.

73,
Geoff.

Subject: [Elecraft] Birdies on 20m

 Hello all,
my new k2 (4691)is ready and i had some qso,s with it. I have some
 birdies on the 20m-band, at 14030, 14151, 14211, 14272 and a very strong
 with s6 at 14363 .
What is to do, to avoid them or to bring them in a range out of band?
 Thanks for your ideas!

 Michael, DC0ZO

Re: [Elecraft] Birdies on 20m

2005-02-27 Thread Darrell Bellerive
Geoff,

Are you proposing that some birdies may be caused by construction methods? If
so, what techniques will reduce or eliminate birdies. Are there specific
components that should be physically mounted in certain positions, either
close to or spaced at a specific distance from the circuit board or other
components? Rather than simply placing a component into the circuit board
holes and soldering, should we be placing certain components into specific
positions relative to the circuit board and other adjacent components?

As I am planning on building another K2, and am a perfectionist by nature, I
would like to be sure that my construction is maximizing performance, and
minimizing adverse effects such as birdies.

Darrell

Looking at the reviews in QST - the noise floor on the TR-7 was measured
at -133 dBm on both 80m and 20m. The noise floor on the K2 was measured
at -137 dBm on 80m, and -138 dBm on 20m. So, you're saying you want to
WORSEN the noise floor by 4-5 dB?

Heh, take the IF gain down a bit -- should do the trick :).
