Re: [Elecraft] 14361!
Agree about coverage, but 350 - 500kHz is ample for my particular interests. I think that I chose an IF of 14 MHz for 6m and 2m for reasons of receiver spurious responses or transmitter spurii, or both, but as the choice was made about 50 years ago I won't swear to this before re-running an analysis. 73, Geoff. Re: [Elecraft] k2 control board r18, r19
If you knew the value of the 'resistors' that were going to live there, and you had them in your stash, you could install them in the proper place and put a jumper across them on the other side of the board. Then when it came time to install the other board, just clip the jumpers (or unsolder if you are a neat freak), which would be easier with a regular soldering iron. This won't work in all cases since sometimes you might be installing a jumper header instead of a cap or resistor. If this isn't your cup-o-tea, then don't lay the original jumper that close to the board and make it easy to clip in half. Then all you have to do is heat the connection and LIGHTLY pull on the jumper with a pair of small forceps or needle nose pliers and then clean the hole with the Hakko. It's easier to clean out a hole with nothing in it than to try to force a lead out of a hole with insufficent heat. NRE/COLE Test Center OH-3 pcarteratgcfn.org or wd8qwratarrl.net Philip L. [Elecraft] K2 #4830 IS ALIVE
Hi Gang: Finished up the basic K2 (S/N 4830) this afternoon with no problems except for the VCO range which was below minimums. Fortunately, I had a 12uH inductor for L31 from an earlier project so that went in and solved the problem. Still have a couple of boxes of options to get assembled. Much fun ahead!! 73, Ken K3IU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] For anyone who doubts QRP
Nothing earth shattering here. BUT. I just worked EA6UN on 40M at abt 0040 with 2W out of my K1-4 (s/n:1977) Granted I was using a 40M dipole up at 55 feet, but I was 569 there and he answered me on my FIRST CALL. I have literally gotten the operating bug again from this radio. I know I'll be ordering the antenna tuner very soon. I will definitely be on the trails this spring with it. Thanks to everyone who answered my questions during the assembly process. [Elecraft] 20 m net - belated comment
I tried to post a msg from BVI on Monday but it doesn't seem to have made it. What a thrill to have been heard on the ECN 20M net! And congrats to Tom for pulling my puny signal out of the noise. For the past week, until this morning, I was operating as VP2V/K2HYD on Torotla, BVI with my KX-1 and a 24 ft piece of wire running from the hotel room patio to a nearby palm tree (BTW, a local came by and pulled coconuts out of the tree - I begged him not to pull down my antenna in the process. Not only did he not pull down the antenna, but he cut up one of the coconuts and gave it to me to drink the milk - delicious, even tho I was not able to follow his admonition to add rum to it before drinking.) I copied Kevin at about 70%, K1EV at about the same, and Tom, N0SS was booming in. Sorry to say other stations were detectable but not copyable. My trusty 12V gel-cell battery failed on Saturday and would not take a charge, so I was on the internal alkaline AA cells ($3.85 for pack of two at the local store!) and running about 1.2 W. Got good results for the week, tho - operated mostly on 20 in the afternoons (mornings were spent scuba diving) and had about two dozen contacts - including Spain, France and Germany as well as some rag chews into FL. Hope to do better next sunday with my windom from home! 73 Ray K2HYD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Help! my AGC is taking over my K2!
Hi gang, It's Merlin, W3ICT; you know, the guy who complains about the filter in the KSB2 all the time. This time, it's actually something different. Recently I had to replace the finals in my K2 (2631). In the process of measuring forward bias, I accidentally lunched the SC1969s with clumsy metering skills. Got the finals put back no problem, but a strange thing has surfaced, and I wonder if anybody has seen it before. Unrelated to the finals, I turned the K2 on and the S meter pegged and the receiver shut down its 1350P IF amp. I measured the AGC voltage. It's way up there at 5.5 volts, regardless of whether the AGC is disabled and regardless of the position of the RF gain control. Sure enough, if I lift the collector on Q12, the receiver comes up to full sensitivity. If I lift d2 (these are all components on the control board, by the way), thus depriving the AGC amp of a signal from the IF, it still makes no difference; the AGC amplifier still makes too much voltage. Any thoughts? Everything else works, by the way. Does U2 just go bad sometimes? By the way, in the matter of filters, I've come up with a simple shielding technique, using tin sheet from hobby shops, that actually improves the ultimate rejection and the shape factor of the seven pole device that's used in the KSB2. I bet somebody out there has experienced this weirdness. I hope Regards, Merlin, W3ICT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Frequency Counter
Glenn, The qualities of a frequency counter capable of setting the K2 reference accurately is that it be capable of counting down to 1 Hz and have adequate accuracy - which means that it must be properly calibrated. The calibration is more important than having any particular counter. Most any counter capable of input frequencies 15 MHz and above will do a good job if properly calibrated. For general ham use at HF, I would look for one that will go to at least 50 MHz or preferrably 100 MHz - calibration to off the air WWV is just not accurate enough for most purposes, calibration to a GPS based standard or a WWVB based standard should be adequate. Be aware of the long term and short term stability specs of the reference oscillator in any frequency counter that you invest in - that will tell you how accurate your counter should be and how much drift you may experience after it is calibrated. Usually, the calibration standard must be about 10 times more accurate than the instrument being calibrated, so if you need to calibrate an instrument to 1 part in 10^6, you will need a standard that is guaranteed to 1 part in 10^-7 to do a proper calibration. The major point I am trying to make here is that you should know your instrument's accuracy so that you know just how 'far to trust it' - that fact pertains to all measurement instruments not just frequency counters, if you don't know the accuracy, the lower order digits shown on a multi-digit instrument may be pure garbage. If setting the K2 reference oscillator is your major goal, I strongly suggest that you use the internal K2 counter and the 'N6KR' method - which is the one detailed on the Elecraft website http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/K2%20C22%20Adjust%20App%20Note.pdf. That method does require that you be able to tune WWV in precisely - listening to the voice announcements will get you close, I highly recommend that you use Spectrogram to view the tones transmitted by WWV - they alternate between 500 and 600 Hz on alternate minutes, and if you set Spectrogram markers at both 500 and 600 Hz, after a few minutes you can tune the K2 so that the Spectrogram peaks from the tones line up with the markers. This method for setting the K2 reference is more accurate than using an external counter unless you know that your counter is calibrated properly and accurately (calibration to 1 part in 10^-7 or better is my recommedation). 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Can someone recommend a general purpose frequency counter suitable for setting C22 in a K2 and for other ham shack uses? RE: [Elecraft] Help! my AGC is taking over my K2!
Merlin, First a correction - the IF signal path into the AGC does not flow through D2, so removing it will not shut down the AGC, but rather will guarantee that AGC will always be present - the IF signal comes into the mixer on pin 1 while C10 effectively grounds pin 2 at the IF frequency. I have not seen or heard of a failure for Control Board U2, but I guess it is possible - but before making any rash conclusions, can you provide the voltage measurements at U2 pins 5, 6 and 7? Also check the resistance measured from U2 pin 7 to pin 6 - if it is much greater than 33k, check the soldering at R5 and/or check for a bad R5. PS - yes I would like to see your KSB2 shielding. Can you put it on a website or something like that? - I'm certain we will need pictures. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Unrelated to the finals, I turned the K2 on and the S meter pegged and the receiver shut down its 1350P IF amp. [Elecraft] K1 Question
I haven't done it, Ron. Looks like a recipe for disaster, though, depending on what field means. If it means operating in the backyard on the patio furniture with the XYL trotting out beer, it might be OK. Operating in the RAIN, in a TENT, at NIGHT from Pulpit Rock..., not so much. The standoffs between the RF board and the ATU are a pain, as you undoutedly know. You just KNOW your going to lose one of them or strip some threads or bend some of those very long header pins. The possibilities for disaster are infinite. When 80 is the band of choice, it's Nature's way of saying, Hit the sack, Ron. 20 will be open tomorrow. [Elecraft] Slug tuned coil installation
Hi Elecraft builders and users, I am currently building a K2, SN 04777. Although, I am not new to kit building, it has been many years since I have built anything. Thus, I have forgotten a few things. Which, brings me to this question, In the installation of slug tuned coils, is it necessary to solder the two(wide) legs which are attached to the can/case of the coil? I am wanting to think that I did this in the past. But, upon looking at the two or three slug tuned coils that I have already installed on the K2's RF board, I do not find that they electrically connect to anything else. Thus, I am wondering if it is really necessary to solder them. Since, it appears that they are just used to hold the coil in place. And, the width of the hole (around said legs) would take bunches of solder to fill. I have tried a search in the archives, concerning soldering slug tuned coils etc. But, cannot find anything that pertains to the installation of slug tuned coils. Thanks in advance, Mike KT2E P.S. First smoke test of the K2 (control board, front panel etc.) was great, everything checked out. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 4786 Has been Born!
Was baptized tonight with a QSO from Allentown, PA to Clearview, FL with K4IBZ on about 7034.3 kHz. Thanks, Bill! Signal was strong and in the clear just after midnight east coast time. Bill was definitely 599 here and he gave me a 589 while I was running 5 W (I know, it is overkill). Why was I on 7.034 instead of 7.040? Well, I've been rockbound there with my SmallWonderLabs RockMite (RM-40) for the past year now, so it was refreshing to tune around and be able to call somebody who was just finishing up a QSO and started calling CQ rather than waiting for somebody to wonder around to 7.040 or answer my CQ there. Don't worry, I'll be back often, it has a special fondness in my heart, although I'll be wondering around a bit now too elsewhere on 40m (and 80 and 30 and 20 ...). Had a frustrating night doing frequency calibration filter CAL FIL setup and alignment. Not sure why it was so frustrating. C22 didn't seem to adjust the frequency display as I thought it would, but eventually I think I got things tuned in on frequency, at least for now they are within about 0.2 kHz, which is off a heck of a lot more than I would like, but it is closer than it was. When I put a new L31 in to get more PLL range (my 10 uH only gave me 9.1 kHz) I'll have to spend more time with it then. In the meantime I'll have fun playing, and building the other modules that will be going in soon.. I may take the rig along for the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness event on Friday with the EPA QRP Club and use it instead of the FT-100 mobile rig. Check out: http://www.wa3wsj.com/files/PolarBear2005.html for more info on Friday's event. See if you can work me with my new K2! Of course this means I'll be doing more on CW instead of phone.
