[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-01-01 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Morning and Happy New Year,
I just got home from my neighbor's house where I was taught how to
play pinochle since I was doing much too well at poker :) Just chips
folks no cash. But they were very nice about teaching me what appears to
be a multilayered game. Melding looks to be the toughest part right now
but bidding also looks interesting. I'll learn.

Later today we'll have the January 1st, 2006 running of the Elecraft
Nets. Tom, N0SS, has told me he will be around to take care of the middle
and Eastern part of the continent. Thanks Tom! If you can tear your way
away from the frivolity and bowl games join us for a few minutes to give
us the weather and propagation news from your neck of the woods.

Here in Oregon the low land folks are dealing with flooding. Up on
the mountain we are socked in with fog so my normal 10 minute trip home
from the next door neighbor's took about twice as long. Instead of
flooding we worry about mudslides and trees falling in the wind due to the
soggy soil.

  Please join us:
Sunday 2400z (Sunday 4pm PST) 14050 kHz
Monday 0300z (Sunday 7pm PST) 7045 kHz

Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for further details. Thank
you for the web space Dan.

Stay warm, dry, and safe,
 Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Obstinate email systems!

2006-01-01 Thread Kevin Rock

Hi Folks,
I must have sent this announcement a dozen times with each of them
getting bounced back to me. Now three of them have landed on the
Reflector. Well it is better for at least one to get through than for
none. I'll figure this out when my life is less hectic. Hopefully in a
week or two things may be a bit better for me. We shall see ;)

   Kevin.

Since I am off tomorrow I should be able to check into both nets. At least
I can TRY to check in. I'll attempt with the K1 first on 20M with 5W and
switch to the K2/100 if necessary.

This will be my first Elecraft QNI since I first got my K2 last year!

Looking forward to hearing everyone live.

[Elecraft] Polar Bears on New Years Day

2006-01-01 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

First of all I would like to wish everyone a Prosperous New Year.

Some of the QRP Polar Bears are going to be out operating on the QRP
frequencies + or - due to QRM today. Look for the Polar Bears between 16:00
and 18:00 UTC. KC0SYS will be on the SSB QRP Freq.

There will be several of us out there but we will not be jumping into any
water. ;-)

WB3AAL, I will be out on the trail from 15:00 UTC until possibly 19:00 UTC
on the QRP CW freq. I am trying to close in on my 500 QSO from the
Appalachian Trail. Going to take a short walk to the pond near Strausstown,
PA to setup and operate. If you hear me and send your call, please give me
about 30 seconds to come back to you. It cold out and the fingers don't move
too fast and it takes time to slip the key fingers out of the wool glove. I
will be using my K1 on the trail.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-01-01 Thread Tom Hammond

Happy New Year Folks:

For some reason, this message from, Kevin (KD5ONS) kept bouncing when
he attempted to send it. So I'm posting it on his behalf.

One thing Kevin didn't mention below... if you're in/on the Net and
happen to hear someone attempting to check in while the NCS continues
to repeatedly miss that station, PLEASE attempt to relay the call of
the other station to the NCS. Sometimes band conditions just don't
permit us to hear everyone who is on frequency and trying to join in
on the activities. Your assistance will be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for a 200 Watt SWR/Wattmeter?

2006-01-01 Thread John Reiser

Hi Thomas,

I'm very happy with my Diamond 600N, which I chose after reading the reviews
on eham.com. You might want to read them yourself. The Diamond offers a
lot of flexibility with three power ranges and a separate vhf/uhf input. In
any case, do get an analog meter. It will be much more useful for alignment
work, of course, as you can see the peaks more easilly.

Happy New Year!

Hello,
now that I started assembling the KPA100 I think
about it purchasing a SWR/Power Meter which may handle
up to 200 Watts and I would prefer one which is
useful in the 1.8 to the 150 MHz range

So far i found two candidates:

1.) Daiwa CN-801H SWR-Meter 1.8 - 200 MHz

2.) Diamond SX-600N SWR/Wattmeter 1.8 - 525 MHZ, 200 Watt

Any comment is appreciated and I thank you in advance for
your help.

2006-01-01 Thread Larry Phipps

I would normally agree with you about the analog display John, and
that's why my LP-100 digital wattmeter project has a bargraph analog
display as well as numerical readout, and it is MUCH faster than an
analog meter... fast enough to follow voice peaks. The LP-100 has 36 bar
segments, and even the handheld LP-300 has 21 segments... they feel
quite analog. Also, they both show simultaneous power and SWR in both
digital and analog form on one screen.

[Elecraft] CW using CAT in MixW

2006-01-01 Thread Kevin Shaw
I just finished the KIO2 module. I tried sending CW using the KY command
in HyperTerminal and it works fine. In MixW I tried sending CW via CAT
command and it doesn't work. PTT, however, does work. I do have the CW via
CAT command checkbox selected in options. I'm using the latest MixW
program. Anyone know if MixW can key the K2 via CAT command in CW mode? I
searched the list archives and didn't really find an answer. I did find a
mention of adding this functionality to MixW but the post is from a few
years ago.

Thanks,

Hi Kevin - yes, MixW can send CW directly with KY commands - I've played

details! As I recall it was a matter of getting the correct syntax in the
cw messages. Stay with it, it will work! HNY - 73 -- Don N4HH

[Elecraft] Re: Ether Nets and Interferrence, redux

2006-01-01 Thread Geert Jan de Groot
After returning from a rather long hiatus from ham radio, I discovered an
obscene amount of interference on the ham bands. I later learned that it
was largely the result of 6 Ethernet'ed computers in the house with cat 5
wiring running all over, and 3 runs going through the ham shack.

In addition to what has been written already (make note of comments on
noisy wall warts and other power supplies!), I should note that classic
10 Mbit ethernet uses 5 MHz machester encoding.
This means that one only sees spikes every 5 Mhz (with sidebands, alas).

100BASE-TX, because of it's encoding, is a lot wider and hence a lot
noisier.

If you don't need 100 Mbit speed to talk to that 2 Mbit ADSL modem,
then you may want to consider setting up a 10 mbit network.

Does the trick every time in ad-hoc setups like with JOTA.

Don't throw out the 'old' 10 mbit hubs, and when you do,
give them to a fellow ham fore safe-keeping.

[Elecraft] 10 meters on K1 - component values

2006-01-01 Thread Stephanie Maks

Hi everyone,

I've finished (for now) my experiments in getting 10 meters on my
K1. It seems to be working pretty well, both on receive and
transmit. I have it up to about 4.5 watts output. I'm sure that can
still be improved but I've decided to give it a rest for now.

Here are all the component values I have used, with 10 Meters as Band
2 of a 2-band filter board. Where I've used two capacitors to make
up the final value, I've indicated that, along with the value I would
have used had I had the capacitors handy.

C6, C10 = 90pf (68 + 22 in parallel; intended to use 82pf)
C7, C9 = 47pf
C8  =   1pf
C16, C20= 220pf
C17, C19= 33pf
C18 =   2pf (1 + 1 in parallel; intended to use 1.5pf)
C24, C26= 68pf
C25 =   150pf
L11, L12	=	approx. 0.26 uuH (8 turns of #26 on the supplied yellow
cores)

X2  =   36.000 MHz fundamental

Three additional modifications have been made to the radio to
increase the output on 10M:

#1: 220pf capacitor added to filter board, on the top side, on P2
between pins 7 and 8. This could also be done on the RF board, at
pins 7 8 of J7. I had more clearance though on the filter board.

#2: On the RF board, R11 has been changed from 82 ohms to 33 ohms,
to increase the gain of the Buffer.

#3: On the RF board, T3's turns have been compressed as tight as
possible. The windings now occupy about 130 degrees of the core.
Experimentation showed that the tighter the windings, the higher the
output on 10 meters. This did not seem to affect the other bands at
all, i.e. no noticable effect even down at 80 M. Next time I feel
like experimenting, I might try rewinding T3 to make it even tighter.

As I said, with those modifications I'm seeing about 4.5 watts
output. The bandwidth is excellent; I've got my K1 set to tune about
270 kHz (using 200pf for RF-C2) and I'm seeing the full output power
all across that range. I've had good success copying a couple
beacons, from 28.217 to 28.258.

The only thing I haven't really addressed yet is how the KAT1
performs with 10M. I tried it briefly and found that the output
power seemed much lower even with the KAT1 set to bypass (ATU set at
CLP) but that may just mean that the KAT1 needs to be recalibrated
for 10M.

Hopefully this info will be of use.

[Elecraft] K2 sn 2615: PLL freq. stability

2006-01-01 Thread Vron Jones
Happy new year all!
I am looking at the PLL Frequency Stability at 7182
kHz sheet which says Alternately insert the internal
counter probe into TP1 (VCO) and TP3 (PLL reference
oscillator) and make sure they indicate the same
frequency (in the 12 mHz range).
Here are my frequencies:
TP1: 12092.59
TP3: 12097.64

That is a differenct of 5.05.
Is this okay, or do I have a problem?
If it is a problem, what should I do about it?

I already recalibrated C22 on the control board and
ran the VFO linearization.

Thanks for your help!

Vron Jones, WD0EFQ

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for January 1st and 2nd, 2006

2006-01-01 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening and Happy New Year to you all,
Sorry folks but I had to be reminded it was a holiday today. I had
been very busy all day on chores, working on lists, invitations, and
planning for a memorial service. I have not announced this to anyone
other than those who have asked but I had a personal tragedy on the 10th
of December. My wife of ten and a half years passed away. This net is
good therapy for me so it will continue.

She very much enjoyed working around my two skeds on Sunday evening
always making a very nice meal for us to eat after the first one was
over. She enjoyed hearing the news from all the folks we had worked. Pat
had an amateur license but was more interested in public service than any
other aspect of the service. She and I had worked for ARES and RACES for
a few years. She had been trained as an EMT and a dispatcher while
working for the local county's 911 center. Between us we taught a number
of ECOM classes for the local ARES/RACES group. We had a lot of fun
making the classes effective and the training meaniful for our area.
Carter Craigie, N3AO, and his lovely wife Kay, N3KN, whom we had met while
staffing the Elecraft booth at the SeaPac hamfest a few years ago, helped
us on more than one occasion.

I would like to post a photo of KD5PZO but the rules of this Reflector
do not allow it. If you'd like you could send me a note and I'll return
it with an enigmatic photo of my very good friend. It looks like someone
is going to be told something but I am not sure if it would have been good
or not ;) She was most charming and I will miss her very, very much.

On the first net there was some QSB but we had fun. I chatted with
Tom a bit before the net and then reminded myself to slow down. When I
called CQ the first time VE1RGB and K4TO sent simultaneously. But Gary
lost to Dave due to the shortness of K4TO :) The same thing happens to me
but there is no way I will change my call ;) I like it and the way it
sounds on CW so in a contest I'll just have to take my lumps! Dave was
medium to weak but that's OK. Gary boomed in from NS very well. So well
in fact that Tom had him call CQ once or twice. Tom, K2TA, had a good
signal to me but as all the rest there was some QSB to contend with.
Fred, K6DGW, checked in from CA and has he had predicted his signal was
light. However, my bud Karl, N7NLU near the West Hills of Portland was
fair copy. I never can predict how he'll come in but then he may have
been hiking in the rain with his K1 :) AK7A, Jason in Washington was not
even ESP to me. At this point Tom had Gary call the net and he landed
KT5E, Jay in Colorado. Jay had a very fast, warbling QSB on his signal
but still not too hard to follow. Then we heard from Ric, VE3XL in
Ontario. It was good to hear him again. I hope he has his Elecraft rig
back in shape!

On to the lists.

At 2400z on 14050.50 kHz:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - oo8
K4TO - Dave - KY - K2 - 4117
VE1RGB - Gary - NS - K2 - 2519
K2TA - Tom - NY - K2 - 1117
K6DGW - Fred - CA - K2 - 4398
N7NLU - Karl - OR - K2 - 4227 QNI #45!
AK7A - Jason - WA - K1 - 2024
KT5E - Jay - CO - K2 - 5037
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968 ?? QNI #80!!

The second net began when I heard Tom tune in. We chatted a bit and then
I started my QRL routine. Dave called with a much better signal than he'd
had on 20 meters. Tom gathered in our lost sheep Ric who must be busy
since we've not heard much from him since just after he lost his K1 :( I
hope it is better now Ric. Randy called from Idaho with a large amount of
slow QSB. A note about Jay further down this account. Mark called but I
thought I was missing a letter between K and 8 but I had totally missed
the N the first few times. He had the same slow, deep QSB as everyone
East of me. Tom was quite good before the net but as Jay mentioned
signals went down within ten minutes of starting. Lastly Rick showed up
running his KX1 with a respectable signal. Some QSB: he went from S1 to
S6 but 80% copy is good enough to find out he enjoyed Christmas :)

At 0256z on 7045 kHz:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - oo8
K4TO - Dave - KY - K2 - 4117 QNI #5
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968 ??
K7TQ - Randy - ID - K2 - 213
KT5E - Jay - CO - K2 - 5037
NK8Q - Mark - PA - K2 - 4786 QNI #5
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798

I am still awaiting Tom since I sent him off on a mission and did not hear
him call back. QSB was INTERESTing to say the least. The difference
between 20 and 40 meters was pronounced, most especially on KT5E's
signal. On 20 I could make him out through the rapid flutter but on 40 it
was a very slow surf. He was easy copy but could not hear me. Much like
talking to my deaf aunt :) She is very nice and has great stories but my
part of the conversation is pretty much left to nodding and smiling! Tom
may have gained further QNI on 40 meters but we'll list those later. I
still have further chores to do and am

[Elecraft] BL1 Stupid Question

2006-01-01 Thread james
I have a dumb question. I have a BL1. It has three connectors in which
to make a connection. If I want to use 300 ohm or 450 ohm feedline,
which connectors am I supposed to use? The connectors are marked 1,
GND and 2. Would I use the same connectors for a dipole versus a loop?
Thanks,

James KB2FCV

1 and 2 are your balanced outputs. Ground simply connects to the shield of
the coax leading to the BL1.

Yes, to the dipole vs. loop. 1 and 2 for either.

Dumb question? No. Just a question. Questions can't be dumb. Only those who
never speak up to ask a question are dumb (dumb means unwilling or unable
to speak: mute).
