Don't worry about them - they are not on this list - just remember their

[Elecraft] Re: RoHS

2006-09-05 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

It's not just a matter of using different solder.

The new solders have a higher melting point and hence need a hotter
soldering iron; typical 50W WECP/WTCP won't do because, while they
have the temperature, they lack capacity at those high temperature -
they can't heat the joint quickly enough.
You'll need the newer 80W soldering stations or risk cold joints.
There's a reason the older 50W stations are available so cheaply
these days.

The new soldering iron comes with a tip that has a thicker ironized coat
as the new solders corrode tips a lot faster.

Forget about using a wet sponge. Because of the higher temperature,
wiping on a wet sponge would cause too big a temperature jump
and hence you'll need to wipe on a special tool.
Note that the routine differs: wipe, wet, solder, wipe, wet,
back to holder.

The new tools together cost about half a K2.
Note that it's important not to contaminate your RoHS-tools with
your older tools: small pieces of lead will change the
composition of the alloy, greatly reducing reliability.

The higher melting temperature means that un-doing a component
is more difficult, with a higher chance of PCB damage,
certainly with less experienced builders (not everyone has
a space qualification, I don't).

Because the new solder's wetting characteristics are a lot worse,
I'm concerned about stripping and wetting toroids with lead-free
solder.
Wel all know that not everybody is fully successful wetting and
stripping toroids as-is. Just ask Gary, who, I'm sure, is not looking
forward to higher warranty claim percentages because of doubtful
toroid stripping with lead-free solders.

Note that some new alloys have a tendency to form bridges (shorts)
after a number of years. Not a problem for a toy that gets discarded
after 2 years, but big problem for a tranceiver which typically
has a lifetime of 20-30 years.

We all see the cheerful messages from people who haven't soldered
in over 20 years or so, and are now getting back to kitting.
Lead-free soldering is a lot less forgiving to new, but unexperienced
builders as it is intended to be used in tightly controlled circumstances.
(we all know that with a WTCP and leaded solder it's difficult to
go wrong).

While I realize that it's less environmentally friendly, I think
that using leaded solder, for a large percentage of
the building population, will have enough advantages that we should
make use of the exception to the rules that was given to us kit-ters.

I agree with Elecraft that the change should not be made lightly,
and not just by using different solder. They suffer the consequences
of a lower yield percentage, and I don't think anyone would want that.

45A accepts #14 to #10 wires. The housing is the same across these

YES... the CONTACTs on all three sizes (15A, 30A, 45A) are all the
SAME SIZE... only the size of the wire insertion area is different.
The 15A contacts accept up to #14 wire, 30A, up to #10 (I think,

RE: [Elecraft] DMM Recommendation

2006-09-05 Thread Darwin, Keith
I needed (wanted) a new DMM a few months ago. Initially was leaning
toward Fluke but didn't want to spend the money. I ended up buying an
Extech off e-bay. It in the Mouser catalog for $200+. I got mine for
about $90 or so, new in the box. I think it was a discontinued model as
the seller had more than one.

The meter does cap and freq measurements as well as V-O-A. It seems to
work OK although it is not that fast in auto mode. I also find the
backlight feature gives uneven lighting but it's better than nothing.
Overall the meter does what I need, which isn't much, and it was
certainly priced right!

2006-09-05 Thread Stephen W. Kercel

Elecrafters:

I has a strange occurrence with my K2/100.

I was running at 10 watts CW on 3596 kHz into an antenna with low
SWR, about 1.1:1.

A very short instant after switching the VFO mode from split to
normal, I got a High Current reading. It only lasted for one dot.

Any ideas what might cause this?

RE: [Elecraft] K-2 and digital question

The Rigblaster is capable of controlling PTT from its serial port

I don't have a RigBlaster, but I just looked at the schematic
and see that you must have P5 pin 1 jumpered to pin 10 (PSK31
programs control PTT with the RTS signal),

It is shipped with this jumper on only one pin in the default
condition. I put it on both - didn't even have to scrounge my jubk
  box for the jumper!

and you must jumper
P1:B pin 18 to whichever pin you use on your K2 mic jack for PTT
(if your K2 is wired for the Elecraft configuration with mic pin
2 as PTT, you would wire P1:B pin 18 to P1:B pin 25).

This is done when one sets up the mike configuration in the RB.

That should allow the RS-232 interface, the Foot switch as well as the front
panel mic input to control the PTT line. Of course, the AUTO/VOX switch
should be in the AUTO position.

One other item needs to be noted. In MixW (for those of us who
use it), go to Config | TRCVR CAT/PTT and make sure that the
serial port used for the RB is specified and enabled and CAT
  set to None.

When all that was done, everything worked properly.

I don't know how that squares with the Rigblaster instructions, but it is
what their website schematic indicates must be done.

It's in there on the last page but it's rather cryptic. The
configuration is the one for PTT on RTS DTR and TXD on KEY

After looking at the Rigblaster schematic, I am amazed that they
did not include a transformer in the headphone jack to soundcard
connection. What that means is that despite all the
optoisolators used in this unit, the headphone jack connection
negates any other attempts to isolate the computer ground from
the transceiver ground. Now I realize there is yet another
reason for all the hum and noise complaints about the audio when
the Rigblaster is used. I would strongly suggest modifying the
RigBlaster by adding a transformer to break this sneak ground
path - if that is possible in this unit (it may not be due to the
physical ground arrangement).

Hmm g I don't think that it's possible because of the
way the PCB is laid out. Perhaps the designer for West
Mountain Radio could take that into consideration. My RB is
fed to the computer through an iMic USB adapter. I don't know
if there's any isolation in that, or if an in-line isolation
transformer outboard of the RB would do any good. In any
event I don't use the headphone jack on the RB.

Now to get some QSOs (I've been working a state a day on 40 m
in the early evenings.) g C U All on 7070..

[Elecraft] Re: ROHS Compliant/Lead Solder

2006-09-05 Thread Fred (FL)
Seems to be time to GIVE IT A REST. No one is
going to solve the ROHS world, or the MIL SPEC
world, of the METRIC for U.S. world either.
These things come and go.

When they figure out how to remove the LEAD/ACID
battery from all of our millions of automobiles
- then I'll start to be concerned. How about
the lead balancing weights on your tires? Lead
sinkers? Lead bullets in Iraq and Tazmania?
Lead battery terminals? ... Leaded
windows in our churches? Linotype lead in those
old european russian printing plants?

[Elecraft] K2/100 10m SSB Distortion

2006-09-05 Thread Kasari, Juha

Tnx for reply Ron

I tested with dummy load and no difference! I took away kpa100 and running
qrp, it sounds very good on all band, even on 10m and more than 10 watts.
But with kpa100 and full output there is disdortion on 10m. I noted I have
made Grounding of mic jack and RF filter on input of compressor mods. No
KI6WX mods.

If it's on one band, it's usually RF getting into the audio circuits on that
band, most commonly through the microphone connector.

One other thing that could be a factor with the K2 is that on 10 meters the
output is usually the lowest, so it's just possible that you're over-driving
the rig with audio on that band to make full output.

Are you using an external mic preamplifier? That's a common source of both
RF feedback into the audio and for enough audio to over-drive the rig.

Even if you have no audio preamplifier, the possibility of RF getting into
the mic is the first thing to check. The easiest way to do that is to switch
from your antenna to a good dummy load and compare your audio on a monitor
receiver.

Ron AC7AC

Hello,

What is the problem? My ssb-transmit has distortion on 10m. The other bands
are ok. I have no mods on ksb2.
