I 'de-tuned' the top cover of my K2 by gluing a thick piece of felt to the

Has anyone else noted this? I wonder if all the speakers

Mine -does- have all options installed except the battery
and I assume the resonant frequency of the box would be
different ... or non-existant ... with different fillers inside
 the case.

I have two of the old Skytech variable-resonance speakers

housing / speaker resonance as a CW aid. They use a sliding
 tube to tune the assembly.

[Elecraft] K2 microphone jack question

2007-03-31 Thread Sam Morgan
I just became the proud adoptive parent of K2 #2481. Not having built any K2
unit myself, and not having the manuals in hand yet, I have a question.

I noticed the mike jack has a just a little, left to right, rotational slack.
It's firm when you try to pull out or push in on the jack. Is something loose
inside that I should be concerned with? I peeked inside, and if I don't have to
dig my way down into behind the front panel, I'd really like to put it off into
the far distant future. ;-/

Don,
Do you know what the resistance is between ground and SO239 antenna

the K2. Without J1 connected the resistance is infinite.

Thanks.

Make a quick continuity check first - from the center conductor of the
J1 coax to the center of the SO239 antenna jack. There should be
continuity on all bands (the ribbon cable should be connected for this
test).

Next, be certain R26 and R27 are set at their midpoint. If the
problem persists, check T4 very carefully for correct lead positioning
and properly tinned and soldered leads. Be certain the red wire goes
through the center of T4 and the bare wire from the SO239 center
connects to T4-6.

everything is bypassed, except the bandfilters?

Hi Guys,
I was up late last nite trying to solve this thing and failed, it really

Last weekend, I made some ssb contacts in the WPX contest and all was
well. Good signal reports and my audio was reported in good shape as
well. Then on Tuesday I attempted to check in to a local 80 meter net
and after several attempts with no responders. A guy comes on and says,
Hey K6GGO, your 500 Hertz high, check your RIT. Well, I checked my RIT
and my XIT and they were both off. So after messing with this thing all
week I am throwing up my hands and asking for help. Here is the data I've
collected:

1) I performed Wayne's procedure for adjusting the 4 mhz master
oscillator (C22). After I adjusted C22, I zero beat WWV and the display
reads 1.53

2) I measured the output frequency of the transmitter with my frequency
counter and it matches the displayed frequency.

3) Last night I quickly went through the Pll reference oscillator range
test, VCO test, VCO alignment, BFO test, and then ran the VFO
linearization. Still no Joy!

4) Both the xit and rit appear to be working normally and are off.

5) Both VFO's are set for the same frequency and are not set for split
operation.

Its as if the receiver and the transmitter are operating on different
frequecies 500 hz apart (receiver lower) and the display shows only the
transmitter frequeny.

I hope this makes sense!
This is probably going to be a button or something in the wrong position
causing me endless embarassment.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the bandwidth,

Set the K2 to 20 meters, enter the menu and scroll to RANT. If the

There is little else that can effect the receive sensitivity on a single

[Elecraft] KX1 - when should I add the KXB3080?

2007-03-31 Thread Joel Weder
Hi folks,

I just received a KX1 kit, with the KXB3080 option.

In the KXB3080 instructions it tells me all about how to modify my KX1 -
AFTER IT IS ASSEMBLED - to include the KXB3080. This includes removing parts
and doing other things that would be much easier DURING the KX1's initial
construction.

Is this actually the way people are adding the 30 80 board kit? Seems like
an awful waste of effort, and adds quite a bit of risk of damaging the
circuit board and other parts.

Thanks for any assistance!

convenient to change mikes, any real need for the header? Do any of you

2007-03-31 Thread Tom Arntzen

Hi David!
In the basic K2 you need the KIO2 to interface the K2 with the KAT100.
That interface is a part of KPA100 , so in your case I would build the
KPA100 first.

That will give you the opportunity to test all aspects of the KAT100.
You will be able to see how it switch between ho/lo power settings eg.
10watts is the triggerpoint.

[Elecraft] PSK with a K2

2007-03-31 Thread Ken Kopp

I'd like to use my K2 on PSK-31.

I have a microHAM USB Interface II that I've been using
with an IC-756 PRO II. I'm disappointed to learn that the

is configured for Kenwood microphone connections. Their
cables are beautifully built using custom-made cable, BTW.

Joe at microHAM says that the Elecraft standard is for a
Kenwood microphone and the cables are made for this
standard. Whether this is the Elecraft standardor not is
beside the point. I have nine (!) Icom microphones, a Heil
desk set and two Heil head-sets, all configured for Icoms.
I have no Kenwood microphones and it seems nuts to

change my K2 to use a Kenwood cable.

I plan to build a simple audio in/out and PTT cable assembly
to connect the front panel microphone connector to the interface.
Are there any gotcha's I should be aware of? Is there a better
approach to enable PSK-31 with a K2?

The EA3BLQ/K2DI interface boards aren't an option for me.
It looks like a kludge hung off of two speaker bolts. Awful!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 K2

2007-03-31 Thread Lyle Johnson
Just starting to get motivated again after building the K2. Have the
KPA100, and KAT100 here. I decided to build the KAT100 now...

 I do not have any

of the extra boards at this time, just the basic K2. Thanks.

You'll need the KIO2, or the KPA100, to use the KAT100. It needs to be
connected to the auxbus in the K2, and these are the Elecrfat-supplied
ways of getting to the auxbus.

2007-03-31 Thread David Wilburn
Thanks to everyone for the quick reply. I figured the KIO2 was going to
be the problem. No big deal, I just finished sorting the parts for the
KAT100, I'll go ahead and build it, then set it aside till I do the KPA.
 No hurry. Thanks again.

[Elecraft] Re: KX1 - when should I add the KXB3080?

2007-03-31 Thread Fred (FL)
Sounds like, now that KXB3080 is finally out there,
Elecraft could re-do the KX1 manual - to show how
to install the KXB3080, right from the get go.
The somewhat re-do of circuitry and devices and
de-soldering - sound messy. Perhaps 2 manuals -
of for with, one for not.

RE: [Elecraft] Re: KX1 - when should I add the KXB3080?

2007-03-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The current procedure is done that way on purpose: Build the KX1 then add
the KXB3080 or KXAT1 modules.

Building the basic KX1 first allows you to test and ensure the KX1 works
correctly before adding the modules. Otherwise troubleshooting to find a
building mistake becomes much more difficult.

Wherever possible, all the Elecraft rigs are built in increments with
in-process testing to catch any errors as quickly as possible when the
mistake is most easily located and corrected.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2007-03-31 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
I am not sure if it is age related or not but the weeks sure seem to be
flying by at warp speed lately. It may be due to the number of projects
which are all heating up at once though. At the rate I am changing hats I
will be losing hair due to friction soon :) The weather was nice enough
to allow me the opportunity to raise one of my reclaimed antennas. It is
in an inverted V configuration but the high point is much higher than I've
been previously been able to go. This is because of all the branches
which were shaven from the large tree in front of the house when the one
fell upon the roof. There is now a nice open gap for my wrist rocket to
deploy its sinker. I made sure I chose a windy day with a bit of rain so
the antenna would be more effective. If all was pleasant and perfect the
antenna would not radiate nearly as well!
I've tested it on 80, 40, 30, and 20 and it tunes nicely and hears
quite well. It is oriented with its legs E-W but I don't think it will
have strong lobes North and South. I think it will work
quasi-omnidirectionally since its wires are at about 45 degrees from one
another. The apex is about 75 feet above the ground with its ends about
30 feet high. When I get more time I will raise them so it is
horizontal. Unless, however, it works nicely the way it is. More testing
is in order.
Pat's daffodils are just about to burst open. Spring comes very slowly
on the mountain. In the lowlands flowers are six to eight weeks ahead of
up here. As I drop to about 1000 feet in elevation my neighbor's
daffodils are now open. In Buxton they are nearing their end. Here they
will open first in the front yard and then in two weeks or so in the back
yard. Depends on whether it warms rapidly or not. I did go for half a
day without a fire as I was raising the antenna but it is going again
now. It won't be out for good for another two months.
As I was listening around with my new (resurrected) antenna I heard
quite a few signals. I did not pay too much attention as to their sources
though. Thus I do not know much about this week's propagation. I did
read we are due for another blast from the sun because of coronal
opening. Depending on when it hits we'll either have bad or good
conditions. We won't know which unless we try; much like Heisenberg's
poor cat! Good thing Sam is not in here to read this ;)
