Thanks a bunch for this info Ken... but, please remember that the K1 and K2 alignment documentation written for using Spectrogram to align your Xtal Filters is written for using Spectrogram v5.1.7. Version 16 will be considerably different from v5.1.7 so you will have to deal with coming up with some of your own parameter settings (in Spectrogram) since they will no longer match those specified for v5.1.7. There will be NO HARM DONE by using v16, only some possible time lost getting things set up. [Elecraft] K3 sn 699
After exactly a 6-month wait, my K3 kit arrived Friday April 18. Saturday it was assembled and basic tests and calibrations completed. Only the front panel attachment required a little coaxing. It's an appealing sight when finished. I did have the broken wire problem on the KBPF3 toroid, but Gary in Support provided repair advice. Sunday it was on the air. PSK31 is a favorite mode, so figured out how to use Digipan on my notebook computer with a USB-serial interface. Two audio cables were needed - that's all, folks. The PTT via serial port signals is in the K3 firmware. The acceptance of sound card output without attenuation is in the (hardware and?) firmware. Sunday also saw the 100-watt module installed and checked out. The high RF flummoxed the touch pad on my notebook, so installed a USB mouse and all is well. My old MC-60 desk mic requires full boost on the TX equalizer and 60 on mic gain, but it gets good reports. Still learning. Still experimenting. A very happy communicator. Only advice so far: If you've made several Menu or CONFIG changes, turn the power off and back on to be sure they're activated. [Elecraft] K3 - it just feels right.
I've had my K3 for a few days now. I've put in some RX time and last night, finally got the key(s) hooked up and had a couple of QSOs. There's something about the K3. It feels like home. I sure love my K2, but despite it's fabulous performance, it never really felt like a real rig. It performed like a real rig, no question about that, but it just didn't have the ergonomics of a real radio. The K3 fixes that. [Elecraft] Microphone recommendation?
Greetings everyone, I'm presently using a TS-850sat with the stock microphone while I wait for my K3 to be shipped. I've been thinking about upgrading the microphone to something that offers better fidelity and more punch for DX'ing. I don't want to spend more than $150. I'm also looking for a microphone that'll work with the K3 without any re-wiring if that's possible. Is it worth upgrading at all, and if so, what microphone would you recommend? I've been looking at the Heil Proset and Kenwood mc-60a thus far. If the differences between the stock mic and any other mic for under $150 would be negligible, then I'll just stick with what I have. Re: [Elecraft] Your Farm's Soil Electrical Conductivity
I hope nobody mindsbecause... I'm jumping in here without having really followed this thread, but I can comment on this. Bill is right that 17 mmho/cm is not equal to 17 mS/m, as you say it should be /cm, not /m. The unit is confusing however, and bears no relation to a per cm or per m at all in the usual way that we think of these units. It starts with the definition of resistivity which has the units of ohm metres. Many people interpret that as ohms/m, but it's not- that would be a resistance per unit length and is entirely different. Since conductivity is the reciprocal of resistivity, the units of conductivity become /ohm/m or mho/m or S/m, to use the SI unit. As I said above, it's just a unit and does not imply a 'per unit length' at all. One formula for conductivity would be: Conductivity = (conductance x length)/area And it is simply the fact that we have a length divided by an area that gives us the /m bit of the unit. The advantage of using the concept of conductivity is that it yields a number which does not refer to a particular sample of material of a certain size, but refers only to a property of the material itself. Rearranging the formula above then allows you to find the conductance of a particular sized sample of that material/soil whatever.. Anyway, the aforementioned conversion is wrong- a slip of the keys no doubt! Hope that helps 73 Stephen G4SJP On 22/04/2008 14:59, Bill W5WVO [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Steve wrote: 15) Use the millimhos/centimeter number as mS/m. Thus, 17 millimhos becomes 17 mS/m. Those of us broadcast engineers in the US who have had the (mis)fortune to wrestle with the charts and graphs of FCC Rules Part 73 Subpart A - formerly called Appendix I - Standards of Good Engineering Practice - will remember that the map of ground conductivity used to compute the groundwave field intensity of AM broadcast stations was found on the infamous Chart M-3 and the conductivity was expressed in mmho/meter. The range was in the single digits over most of the U.S. A ground conductivity of 8 mmho/m was the default value for decent soil. Swamps and marshes (the best sites for AM stations) was up in the 20s, and pure rock was down about 1. Don, I have traveled with my KX1 quite a bit and have never had a problem. It is in a small Pelican case along with paddles, ear phones, etc. I just tell them it is a radio. I cannot remember ever turning it on to prove it. Since the XRay machine will not be able to peer into it, it will almost certainly be hand checked. But, other than the inconvenience and a few extra minutes, you should have no trouble (says me). Oh, and I do have a copy of my license (laminated) in with it. A few (not many, but a few) know what it is and what it means. Re: [Elecraft] kx1 on airlines
It wasn't a KX1, but I recently carried my K2 (including the internal SLA battery option) in my carry-on bag, and had no problems going round trip San Francisco/Orlando. Best protocol is to take it out of your bag and put it in one of the plastic bins, just like you'd do for a laptop computer. That way, you're declaring it, rather than causing them to want to dig in to your bag just to see what in the heck that little box really might be. In SFO, they did tell me that they wanted to scan it twice, but didn't ask any other questions. Nothing said at all in Orlando. FWIW, there should be no problems carrying a gell-cell or SLA-type battery as long as it's installed in the equipment. Same should apply to the battery pack for your KX1, unless you're doing something more, um, custom. I've always carried loose AA-size batteries with no issues. There ARE quite a few ham things--mostly homebrew gear--that I would not try to take through airline security these days. They are extremely suspicious of any thing that doesn't look commercial build quality, ie handbuilt don't know what this thing is kind of stuff! BTW, I had my little PAC-12 antenna in a checked suitcase, which got inspected by Homeland Security on both legs of the trip (as evidenced by the little paper calling card they leave inside the bag). On the return leg, the dim bulb inspector couldn't figure out how my TSA approved lock on the suitcase was supposed to unlatch, so he broke it and the latch on my suitcase getting it open! I thought it was unusual that they'd inspect it on both legs of the trip, until it dawned on me that the loading coils for the antenna are basically PVC pipe sections with wire wound around the outside, and metal caps on each end. [Elecraft] Sidetone DB Measured
Just to eliminate some of the subjective opinions, I have measured the DB level with my sound level meter at a distance of 2 feet from my speaker. Note that for CW I always use the MFJ-281 ClearTone speaker. This speaker has a rather sharp resonance at 650hz and is the best cw speaker I've found over the past 44 years. I keep the speaker directly on the desktop with a solid background behind it. This position provides the cleanest and loudest tone. I tuned in WWV and adjusted the AF gain on the receiver for a comfortable level, 75 DB. I then pushed the mon button and adjusted the sidetone for exactly 75 DB. The sidetone level indication shows 18. Finally, I increased the sidetone level to maximum and read an ear splitting 91 DB on the level meter. I've always used QSK, even back in the tube days so I'm used to the band noise and wouldn't want to be without it however I believe it tends to make us want to increase the sidetone level a bit. The internal speaker on virtually any rig is horrible for CW so I never use them. Those speakers are there just so they can claim to have one. CW tones are directional. Aiming the sound straight up not a good way to copy CW. Using my Kenwood HS5 headphones, the sidetone seems about right when set at 30 which is where I usually have it set for the speaker too. The HS5 cans have an 8 ohm impedance and are quiet efficient at 650 hz. Wide band, hi-fi cans might require more sidetone drive to mask the unnecessary frequencies. 73 Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] 1N5711 Diodes
Don, Those diodes sit (electrically) right near the antenna jack, and are thus exposed to strong static and lightning surges. If you operate when lightning is in the vicinity, they may become damaged. Of course, if you do not disconnect your antennas when not in use, you are almost certainly assured that sometime during the spring and summer seasons those diodes will be damaged. Also be aware that rain and snow induced static can pack quite a charge too, so it is best to disconnect the antennas when not in use no matter what the season - it protects not only your K2/100, but also you, your home and your family. If you do not wish to give care to the diodes, you could replace them with 1N4148 diodes which are a bit 'tougher' than the 1N5711s, but you will sacrifice some power control accuracy at low power and the 1N4148s are not as flat with respect to frequency as the 1N5711s so you might experience some bands where the indicated power and the actual power differ more than with the 1N5711s. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have just recently re-subscribed to the reflector. Took a KX1 to Maui last October inside a carry-on camera case containing 2 paddles, 4 coils of antenna wire, 4 coils of ground-plane wire, batteries, and several other red-flag items guaranteed to make their day. The camera case and my body went through all their machines with no questions asked, both at St. Louis and at Los Angeles. The only suspicions I manage to raise was checking into ECN with a wire going into the tree above me while I sat on a chaise lounge mere feet from the ocean surf. A hotel security guard stopped his golf-cart, flashed me a big smile, and asked if he could help. I replied, Don't need any help but I'll bet you're curious as hell as to what I'm doing. He flashed another mahalo smile and yes, yup. A quick mention of the word ham radio brought his hand into the air with a dismissive good luck as he rapidly drove off. [Elecraft] Not OT! W4RNL SK
I learned a great deal from LB. I read his antenna notes for years before I ever asked him a question. He was very kind and helpful teaching me about the mathematics of antennas for my masters thesis. Then, later, I thanked him for his note on losing his spouse. It meant a great deal to me to find another person to share the pain of losing someone so close. I exchanged many emails with him on this subject because I had recently lost my wife. He was very kind once again. I will miss you very much LB. VY 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] K2 DATA port has been updated !!
Hi to all, I have updated my pictures about the DATA port I added on my Elecraft K2. I changed a few thing. First of all I used RG-174 coax for all wires I found that the audio was a little bit distort using regular flat ribbon cable. RJ-174 is very small and provide better isolation and grounding for DATA purpose. I used standard 600 Ohm audio transformer for audio isolation, but receive smaller one today... so my next version will take less space than actual pictures. So can see all these pictures at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/va2ss/ Good work !!! [Elecraft] radios on airlines
Many times, carry one radios are swiped with a small pad that is then tested for whatever should not show up. Checked bags with radios are many times opened and checked. The bad news of this the re-packing of the radio is sometimes haphazard and not as good as you did. I am called on to fly with ham radio, video cameras, and laptop computer which should I check because they all can not go in carry-on? In Delhi, the bag guys stole the camera and computer but I was carrying the radio Delta Airlines who refused to replace anything. I like the 1.8 and have ordered it for my K3. I used a 1.8 on FT-Mark 5, FT-MP, IC-775, and IC-706 and found them useful in all cases. [Elecraft] Re: kx1 on airlines
I travel with my KX1 in a small Pelican case on a regular basis. The radio has lithium batteries installed. The case includes the paddle, the banana plug adapter, antenna wire and headphones. I have a copy of my license stuffed in the back, between the colored liner and the clear outer case. I would *not* check mine, for fear that it wander off. I usually travel with a rat's nest of stuff in my backpack, and am rarely bothered. I *have* learned to use small zipper lock bags to keep the stuff separate for my own sanity! 73 de chris K6DBG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
