[Elecraft] Katiegram

2008-06-20 Thread Greg_C.

I just got my Katiegram today, the 19th of June.:jumping: I have to call them
back and let them know what I want to do. They said that my second sub
receiver and Digital Voice Recorder is on back order. I have a couple
options. They can send me my K3 and I would get it in three weeks and when
the parts come in, I can install it. The second options is to let them hold
my radio until the parts come in, install it and ship it to me. The third
option is for them to ship me the radio and when the parts come in, I can
send it back to them and I pay shipping. Now, how easy is it to install the
sub receiver and the digital voice recorder? I can't wait to get my hands on
this radio and I have to let them know something asap if I want to start the
process. Is it fast and easy to install these two parts?

Re: [Elecraft] Second Receiver Discussion

2008-06-20 Thread Maarten van Rossum
It is also very convenient during contesting. When running on a given
freq and the QSO rate is going down, you can use the sub RX to work
multipliers. It enables you to listen to your run freq and to the
multiplier, work the multiplier quickly and immediately return to you
run freq. That way you are able to keep your run freq.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 noise reduction

2008-06-20 Thread GW0ETF

I'd recommend a read of Lyle's description of NR in the FAQ and also in
'Operating Tips'. From this it's clear this sort of adaptive filtering is
going to be most effective for CW.

I've been using it with F2-3 setting and it works fine for me (on CW). On
signals other than very weak ones (which Lyle points out could be adversely
affected by NR), the audio actually appears to increase a notch if anything.
There is a small amount of distortion on the audio with the most noticeable
being a softening of the cw characters which will make copying slightly more
problematic in difficult conditions.

Having said all that I still use filtering first and foremost before falling
back on things like NR; and to comment on the suggestion that NR should
remain on after switch off, I remember ages ago Eric or Wayne saying they
specifically designed the NR *not* to remain on as folk were contacting them
complaining their receiver had died when they switched their K3 back on and
not hearing any background hiss - the NR is that good! Anyway it's only one
button press to turn it back on...

73, Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3/100 145)

Dave Martin-3 wrote:

I've about given up too, Windy. The NR must be only for the CW ops.
I'm about ready to order one of the speakers with NR and see if it's
any better. If it is, I might as well be using it with my Drake
instead. What we have now seems about as effective as the NR on the
low end Icoms that I've had, which is minimal. That's the only other
NR I've used. Are any of the other radios any better? Maybe some
owners of the competing brands could comment.

I think that one of the happier things about the K3 is the continuing
hope of greater performance and features. Nothin' like hope. It
 keeps us going.

 Dave W5DHM

Yes, I'd hope for further improvement of the NR on phone. Even if
it's not too effective I still nearly always have it on, but the radio
powers up with it off and blasts me with the increased audio. It
seems like it would be nice if it powered up with the NR in the same
state it was before. Is this a problem for anyone else?

I'm hoping to do some experimentation with diversity reception to
significantly improve weak signal reception and reduce QSB. Something I

Go to 'Control Panels' (when in Windows)

One of the tabs will give you the option to assign F keys to the

Works with HRD and N1MM.

are a full 14 days shorter order to katiegram than previous

I would not count on it holding at least in the short term.

Based on comments here, there is a significant backlog of orders
being held so the K3 and KRX3 can ship at the same time. If
the KRX3 begins to ship in quantity next week as currently
scheduled, the held units will move to the top of the queue.

[Elecraft] Barely Dead (WAS:] K3 Fuses)

2008-06-20 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
IIRC, the codes used to say that anything above about 40-50 volts is a
shock hazard. Over the years I've learned that's the voltage level at
which I get very careful to avoid current flowing through my body.

Even so, I've grabbed onto the 250KV terminal of my Van De Graff generator
with barely a tingle. Van De Graff generators don't generate much current: a
tiny fraction of one milliampere is typical. Those are the machines that one
sees in high-voltage demos where the person's hair stands on end, a light
bulb in their mouth will light with an eerie glow (it’s the rarified gas
glowing, not the filament), etc.

On the other hand, I've seen severe wounds caused by 12 or 24 volts from a
high-current source, not by current passing through the body, but by current
passing through conductors in contact with the body, such as jewelry or
tools.

So current plays a huge role in the degree of danger.

That doesn't even begin to address the physical danger from being careless
working on your rig and frying a circuit or two by dropping a tool or part
into a hot circuit. The act of banging your head on the wall or desk after
seeing the smoke rise from the electronic corpse is also quite dangerous.

[Elecraft] K2 Modification Help

2008-06-20 Thread Dave Agsten

G'day to all,

I have a couple of K2s that I would like to exchange options in and am
wondering just how involved it would be. I did not build either of these radios
initially.

Here are the two radios:

K2/10 S/N 02689 with KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2

k2/100 S/N 3523 with KSB2 ( I have KNB2, K160RX and KAF2 kits to install )

What I would like to do is pull the KPA100 out of the one radio and make what
is currently the QRP radio a K2/100. I'd like to know if there is anything to
be aware of or reasons that this might be a bad idea. How difficult of as
project would this be?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Modification Help

2008-06-20 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

You will have to mount the headers (2 pin) for the AUX RF and the AUX
12V on the RF Board unless you have already done that (none of your
current options require those).
Your current QRP K2 has a serial number less than 3000 -- You will also
have to make the mods on the Control Board for the sidetone source/TXD
from U6 pin 25 - again, this might have been done The instructions are
in the KPA100 manual.
Oh yes, you will also have to remove pin 4 from the Control Board header
that the KPA100 ribbon cable plugs into.

Other than that, you should not have to do anything other than the
mechanical swap.

[Elecraft] Filter Setup - Multiple filters

2008-06-20 Thread AD6XY - Mike

I have just fitted two option filters to my K3.

I have FL1 FM, FL3 2.7 std, FL4 400Hz 8 pole.

Setting up the filters by mode I noted a strange effect. AM,FM and CW were
as expected. On USB I set the filters available to FL1 and FL3. I was
listening on 20m but each time I changed mode and back I ended up with FL1
slected and no ability to change it - That is until I also enabled FL3 for
LSB. Once I had done that I could set the USB filter.

Now I think I understand why this happened, USB is really using LSB above
10MHz MHz because of the 8MHz IF, but the dial says USB to avoid confusion.

This feature may be by design but it is rather confusing.

I've been using it with F2-3 setting and it works fine for me (on CW). On
signals other than very weak ones (which Lyle points out could be adversely
affected by NR), the audio actually appears to increase a notch if
anything. There is a small amount of distortion on the audio with the most
noticeable being a softening of the cw characters which will make copying
slightly more problematic in difficult conditions.

Having said all that I still use filtering first and foremost before
falling back on things like NR; and to comment on the suggestion that NR
should remain on after switch off, I remember ages ago Eric or Wayne saying
they specifically designed the NR *not* to remain on as folk were
contacting them complaining their receiver had died when they switched
their K3 back on and not hearing any background hiss - the NR is that good!
Anyway it's only one button press to turn it back on...

I have read the FAQ on NR.
So I cannot understand why when I tap NR in CW mode I get the message N/A.

I used to be able to use NR in CW mode.

Yes.

In data mode, the intent is to have as pure a signal as possible, so AN

Check the Elecraft web page for upgrades that either rig might be lacking in
support of the KPA. Also make sure your Firmwares are up-to-date. I would
recommend doing a reset on the older rig after install hardware and prior to
configuring setup. You may want to check your filter configs and record any
configs that will get wiped in a reset. Of course all power settings thru the
KAT will need to be cal'd too.

[Elecraft] K3 - Power Supply - My Experience

2008-06-20 Thread John W2XS

K3 – Power Supply – My Experience

I had a couple of issues with my K3 S/N 919 when I first assembled it. The
issues turned out to be mostly my problems, not really the unit’s, and
Elecraft’s support was incredible, even on the Memorial Day weekend. They
had reassured me that they would get me through all of the issues and that
turned out to be true. It was very much appreciated.

One of the issues that I had was a chirp and rough sounding CW note on 20
meters. 80 and 40 were fine. I use a Cobra Ultralite antenna on all bands
(www.k1jek.com) with a Johnson Matchbox. I started out using a switching
power supply (Mean Well SP300-12) rated at up to 13.2V at 24A. I thought
everything was fine until I got a bad report on 20m one night. I did have
some RFI in the receiver but I did not think it was too bad.

Just in case, Elecraft sent a new synthesizer board to me and I installed
it. I also moved some equipment around and took the Drake twins (with their
transformers) off the desk. Finally, I bought a new Astron RS-35A from R and
L Electronics (a great place to deal with). I have received good reports on
20 meters with this set up, and all of the RFI, including some sweeping
signals that appeared in the receiver, is gone.

The Astron power supply is as big as the rig itself and much heavier, and
has a little noticeable hum sound to it (not electrically). But I am happy
with the performance.

Now I can try the built-in tuner and the BL-2 balun and compare that to the
Johnson Matchbox. I have already established perfect matches on all bands
from 160 to 10 but did not want to transmit that way until the reports were
good.

The TxEQ adjustment frequencies are set for voice operation. They are
the same setpoints as used in the W2IHY 8-band EQ.

They are probably not in the right places to compensate for whatever
ripple might be in the subsequent crystal filters in the Tx Path. Also,
such compensation would change with USB/LSB operation, and is not easily
observable by the operator of the Tx, so might not be straightforward to
set properly.

Any mode that is designed for robust, or weak signal, HF data operation
should have allowance for slight amplitude and phase variations, since
that is a normal part of HF signal propagation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 noise reduction

2008-06-20 Thread Alexandr Kobranov
The best way is to try and check power levels on all tones used in
WSJT mode. In my case the playing with TxEQ help to compensate lover
signal level from SoundCard at low tones. As such signals are driving
mostly some VHF transverter system with some QRO PA which is during
1min period in 100% duty mode (like in FM mode), there is need to
carefully check power level going out (drive level) to prevent some
bad things :-(

(mostly power shoud be reduced below nominal like in rtty or fm)
As such setting is strongly dependent on soundcard type and settings
there is no simple recommendation. One has to know what he is doing -
but this is general rule with K3 :-)
Maybe TxEQ and RxEQ will be accesible by external utility and profile
will be possible to save/recall.

For electronic hobbies, there are advantages in having a more directly

- you will need it for accurate time synchronisation to a hardware clock;
- you will need it for certain sorts of, timing critical, simple

[Elecraft] K3 - Firmware version management question

2008-06-20 Thread Fred Jensen
Firmware versions seem to appear fairly frequently. I've just been
downloading them all to the K3 Firmware folder that the Utility
created for me. Is there something I should be doing to segregate the
versions into separate folders? Doing that seems a little confusing
since the MCU and DSP version numbers don't seem to track each other,
but maybe someone has figured that out?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM feature request

2008-06-20 Thread Jim Wiley

Well, at least one reason is that some SW stations still insist on using
frequencies other than precisely on the 0 or 5 kHz marks. Also, a
slower tuning rate makes it easier to offset the tuning to one side a
bit to help duck interference. This is the we don't need no stinkin'
rules syndrome.

SW listening and AM ham radio operation are the reasons that I insist on
having full AM capability in any HF ham
receiver/transmitter/transceiver before I will purchase it. Also, all
too many of them recently have, unfortunately, bought into the idea that
AM must have a faster tuning rate than other modes. Not necessarily a
good idea, at least as far as I am concerned. But then, perhaps I just
an OF. Selectable tuning rates for _all_ modes, including the very
slowest to the very fastest are the way to go.

It's the first time I've noticed this problem. I assume Lyle that you are
not suggesting that it's a by-product of using the AFX, because I use AFX
all the time and had not noticed it before. I don't have the settings for
SPKR+PH _and_ SPKRS=1 on.

AFX provides a delay between the two channels. If the channels are then
summed, there will be peaks and nulls depending on the pitch. The same
thing happens if you have two speakers in a room with hard walls and no
draperies. It is not distortion, it is combining signals that are no
longer in phase due to the intentionally introduced delay.

[Elecraft] K3 AFX, etc...

2008-06-20 Thread Don Rasmussen
I enjoy the flexibility of the K3 audio system. I use
the AFX stereo setup in non-stereo mode.

Setup K3 for 2 speakers, place an MS4 or equivalent on
top of a floor mounted Sounds Sweet speaker.

The MS4 handles the sharp CW notes, the Sounds Sweet
provides rich audio on phone modes,
and it's all automatic with no external audio
amplification.

A little Rx-Eq is icing on the cake.

I used to need to use amplified computer speakers to
get a similar effect, it was never
as good and always hard to keep RF out of the speaker
wires.

Highly recommended and imo -far- exceeds the audio
coming from the K3/PCSDR setup.

I agree with Jim . A fast tuning rate on AM is not necessarily good.
What is good is to be able to vary the rate to fit what the user likes .
Like the FT-817 and IC-746.

And, Jim, being a live OF beats the heck out of the alternative!

[Elecraft] Bad Filters

2008-06-20 Thread David Robertson
Jerry,

When I got my K3 I found the FM filter was open (no signals). When Electaft
Support sent me a replacement I could only get 1.5 watts out through the filter
(verses 100 watts through a ,001 UF capacitor) on FM.

When I again contacted Support, I suggested that they plug the FM filter into a
K3 and test it before they send it to me. When I got the replacement FM filter
(My second replacement) it worked fine.

To answer your question, I don't think they test all filters.

according to the sheet - I can not get xmit LP to HP for so reason -
any ideas - maybe I'm just tired? The fuse leads are hooked up.

my new K3 arrived, but I can't really afford to keep both.

I wonder if I could get it built before field day, if so, it would be
a great time to test both rigs and see which I like better.

I could probably get a small premium for it if I sold it

I could probably sell the FT-2000D and get most of what I paid for it back.
