[Elecraft] return to original frequency after using memory
As I am listening/working at a certain frequency I sometimes use one of the memory buttons to check another frequency. But how do I then return to my original frequency? My ‘other’ rigs go to ‘memory’ or ‘memory tuning mode’ when a memory frequency is accessed. Cancelling memory mode brings you back to the original frequency. How does that work with the K3? Do I miss a trick? 73 Miles PA3CVV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: K3 Caution when using an external monaural speaker
Hi David, Lyle, KK7P (who designed the KIO3 board set) will create an application note and post it as soon as possible. The short version is: put 1/8-W (or larger), 470-ohm resistors from each speaker output to ground. (The actual value isn't critical; anything from 330 to 1000 ohms would probably work just as well.) This can be done conveniently on the KIO3's audio daughter board, at its single-row, right-angle male connector. Technical details: The resistors hold the (-) leads of the AF amp's large electrolytic coupling capacitors at ground potential (RF board, C2 and C3, 470 uF). Thus if you accidentally ground *either* of the speaker outputs, you'll be changing only the AC load to the amplifier -- not the DC voltage. This means you won't get a big current spike backward, into the AF amp's output, through the electrolytic; that's what we think can damage the chip, because the caps can dump a lot of energy very quickly. An astute observer would note that a similar current spike should be generated on power-up, if a short at either speaker jack was present at that time. But the AF amp chip protects itself during power-up, limiting current at its output pins. If it didn't, even the presence of a low-Z speaker might cause chip damage. With the resistors in place, Lyle repeatedly shoved a mono plug into the speaker jack, under both small and large-signal AF output conditions. He couldn't break the amp chip. Credit for this bleeder resistor idea goes to another one of our staff engineers, Bob, N6CM. Lyle and I both wish we'd thought of it. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 20, 2008, at 12:59 AM, David Cutter wrote: Wayne I will be doing all the mods for Christmas. [Elecraft] K3 Hardware Updates
Well I finally bit the bullet and did the audio- and ALC-mod hardware updates to my SN308 K3, including adding pull-ups to the band-data outputs (optional mod in the ALC instructions). I'd already done the HAGC and CW rise-time mod a few months ago. While I don't use ALC with my K3/ALS-600, I wanted everything up to date. Everything went smoothly, as the Elecraft instructions are excellant. Time spent was probably about two hours, but I took my time. I wanted to pass on my experience with K6LL's suggestion about making the L4 front panel mod from the side of the unit without having to remove the front panel. I found this surprisingly easy to do, and it certainly saved time. So - Now after two mod processes plus installation of the KRX3, my cabinet screws are starting to show a little wear. Maybe Elecraft should offer a small kit that just includes replacement cabinet screws (top-and side-cover especially) for those of us who keep taking our K3s apart. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Hardware Updates
A key objective of the procedures is to make sure everyone with normal skills and tools can do the job cleanly and correctly the first time. It's the same trade-off used for important tasks anywhere, whether the worker is an astronaut working on the ISS, a surgeon in the operating room, or an AE mechanic rebuilding an aircraft engine. Removing a few screws and pulling off the front panel assembly allows you to install the jumper without working half-blind from the side, trying to avoid damaging the DSP board or causing an unseen solder bridge. For those who haven't tried it, removing and replacing the front panel assembly is easy to do - especially once it's been mounted. The toughest time is the first time the front panel is mounted when all the connectors are still brand new and extra tight. But even then it goes smoothly if you follow the directions. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I wanted to pass on my experience with K6LL's suggestion about making the L4 front panel mod from the side of the unit without having to remove the front panel. [Elecraft] RTTY using LSB versus AFSK-A
I'm trying out RTTY for the first time today during the OK RTTY contest in preparation for the upcoming RTTY RU in a couple of weeks. I have used MixW running AFSK for years on my FT1000D to the extent that I got quite used to the visual signal spotting aspects of the waterfall display. I normally search and pounce rather than send CQ so I'm always tuning looking for new signals on the waterfall. Using LSB on the K3 with a filter width of 1.5KHz is working perfectly. I just point the mouse at any signal that I see on the waterfall in that bandwidth and transmit. I know I'm supposed to use the Data mode with dual passband but the bandwidth is so narrow I hardly hear any signal until I'm right on top of it. And the waterfall is so narrow I barely see the signal unless I tune very slowly with the finest tuning resolution. Once I'm on top of a signal it too works perfectly. My impression is that the Data mode with dual passband would be better for a station sending CQ and then very finely tuning to pick out the calling stations. Is that a valid assumption or have I just not mastered the art of using the Data mode. Or does the problem reside in my decision to use MixW. RU might be a different story, as I expect the bands will be crowded. With PB2 off, you can always open up the width control if you're looking for targets. I set up MMTTY so that it was centered on the same frequency as the K3's filter when I hit NORM, so I could get back there quickly, but found I didn't need to do that. Other reasons to use AFSK A or DATA A modes include that you'll probably want to configure those to use line-in with an appropriate level set, whereas LSB would use a mic or headset, and you want to have compression, etc, off in DATA mode too. ~Iain / N6ML ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Contest use of KRX3
Now that I have the KRX3 installed and have been playing with it a bit... It is quite a new thing for me to have a sub RX that is useable as the run RX or as an SO2V search pounce RX with good selectivity. I would be interested in knowing how others have used the KRX3 in a CW contest. One specific question aside from the general question: if I am still working the run frequency and have taken the sub RX off the run frequency (SO2V) for mults, have a weak DX station in the sub RX narrow filter and I want to call higher or lower to work the pile-up, can I use the XIT based upon the sub RX frequency? If I do BSET and then XIT it just clears the BSET and does nothing. Can this be done from the K3 front panel or can it be done somehow from a logging program with sent commands? 73, Guy. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Contest-use-of-KRX3-tp1682273p1682273.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Aside from the advantages of having the levels set differently from LSB and the compression turned off is there a received signal advantage to using Data Mode instead of LSB assuming both bandwidths are set the same. I doubt whether there is any received signal advantage, but there are several operational differences: In AFSK A (or FSK D), if you use the tones chosen using the PITCH control the dial display and most software will both display, log and spot the mark frequency, in agreement with standard amateur procedure. If you use LSB or DATA A, the dial displays the suppressed carrier frequency, which is not the frequency you are transmitting on. You or your software will have to add (DATA A) or subtract (LSB) the audio mark frequency from the radio's dial display to get the correct frequency for spotting and logging. In DATA A and LSB you can use whatever audio frequencies you want to within the bandpass, whereas in AFSK A you may want to (and in FSK D you must) realign your tuning so that the signal you are working is on the chosen audio frequency. However, this is not really all that limiting - if you find you need to narrow the bandwidth because of QRM, you will probably want to be on that frequency anyway, because that is where the DSP filters will be centred. Some software (including MixW) has an Align or Opt feature that will do this for you automatically, i.e. if you click on a signal in the waterfall, you can click on the Align button and it will retune the radio so that signal is placed on the chosen audio frequency. The K3's SPOT tuning aid works properly for RTTY in AFSK A and FSK D (again, assuming you have the PITCH set to the tones you are using) - it doesn't work at all in LSB, and in DATA A it produces the CW sidetone, which is very unlikely to be appropriate for RTTY. The K3's CWT and TEXT DEC features also work for RTTY in AFSK A and FSK D, but not with the other mode choices. You mentioned that you are using MixW. MixW is a bit trickier to configure for the K3 than for some other radios. Here, FWIW, are the settings I use in MixW for the K3: Under Configure - TRCVR PTT/CAT, I have CAT set to KENWOOD and the Model set to All Kenwoods (*not* to Elecraft K2, which doesn't work very well with the K3). The only check boxes I have checked are CW is LSB and AFSK in place of FSK. The CW pitch setting is the same as the K3's sidetone pitch for CW. I have the Default digi mode set to RTTY (this selects the K3's DATA mode, but does not distinguish among the four DATA modes - more on that later). Under the Details button, I have the port set to 38400, 8, None, 2, RTS set to PTT and DTR set to Always Off (I use a Winkey for CW). Correspondingly, the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY is set to rtS-OFF. In order to set the data submode, I make use of MixW's OnStartMode macro in the Macros for this mode mode-specific .mc file for each of the modes that I use. For RTTY, my OnStartMode macro contains CATCMD:MD6;DT1;PC100INVON . This sets the K3 to DATA mode, submode AFSK A, power 100 watts. It also sets MixW to Inverted RTTY (MixW's default is USB, but AFSK A is LSB). The View - Spectrum display setting should be either RF,LSB or AUTO. You will need to set the TX and RX frequencies under Mode settings to your centre frequency (2210 Hz if the K3's pitch is set to 2125-170, 1530 if it is set to 1445-170, 1360 if it is set to 1275-170, and 1000 if it is set to 915-170). To log the mark frequency, you should set the CAT correction for Digi to the negative of your chosen centre frequency. This will ensure that logged frequencies and cluster spots will be correct, but the waterfall/spectrum display frequency legend will display the centre frequency, not the actual frequencies of the traces in the waterfall. This 85 Hz offset occurs with all radios; it is caused by the fact that for some reason MixW is programmed to use the centre frequency instead of the mark frequency. You can adjust the CAT correction so that the waterfall shows the correct frequencies, but then the log and cluster spots will be off by 85 Hz. I prefer to log the correct frequencies and live with the error in the waterfall. I program one of my MixW macro buttons to contain ALIGN: where is the centre frequency. This button is what I use to snap a signal back to the chosen pitch at the centre of the filter bandpass. I have this button defined in my mode-specific macros for RTTY, because I use a different align value in other modes. For PSK31, the first change is to reset MixW's CAT correction for Digi back to 0. I have not found any way to automate this change, unfortunately. You will also have to set MixW's View - Spectrum display setting to RF,USB , because MixW's AUTO setting thinks the K3 is in LSB in DATA mode, whereas DATA A is actually USB. My PSK31
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Hardware Updates
Although a little screw wear is inevitable, the wear will be much less if a proper fitting screwdriver is used. The screwdriver points do wear after a while, so the purchase of a good new #1 phillips screwdriver is my recommendation. When the screwdriver point will no longer hold a screw securely, I believe it is time to purchase a new one. A good screwdriver point will hold a new chassis screw when the shaft is more than 15 degrees off a vertical position (who needs a screwholder or magnetic screwdriver if the tip is good?). Thanks to the G; whomever it was,,, for the hint on the removal of the choke ( audio output mod). [Elecraft] Re: RTTY using LSB versus AFSK-A
Well I'm really glad I posted this question. With the contest running I was able to try the suggestions and I've learned a lot. I'm now using the data mode AFSK A at a wider bandwidth when activity is light. I can narrow the bandwidth as activity increases. I implemented settings in MixW based on VE3KI's suggestions which allows me to pick a signal on the waterfall off of center frequency and then using an align macro button I can bring that signal into the center of the passband. Then if conditions require I can press the K3 dual passband button to optimize the bandwidth for that one signal. So I'm basically using MixW to autospot the signal using its AFC and then move the signal into the center of the K3 filter passband. I suppose it would be better if I fully understood what I was doing. But why press my luck. Re: [Elecraft] k3 matching filters
I just completed the same installation Bill. I bought an additional 500 Hz filter and paid to match two filters. They both matched exactly to my original filters. My installation went pretty well. My DVR seems to work, but I have not been able to find any instructions for operating. Maybe we are supposed to experiment and find out. I installed the DVR first then the KRX-3. I was surprised to learn that the SO239 and the BNC connectors cannot both be connected at one time. There is only one input to the receiver. (Maybe everyone else knew it, but I didn't). My KRX-3 kit said to install the second DSP board with one nylon and two steel screws. The DVR kit gave me two more nylon screws with instructions to replace the steel screws in the DSP so I used the nylon screws. It looks like very small clearance for the screw heads so apparently some people have had shorts. Good luck with your installation. The second receiver is interesting. I plugged in some surplus Labtec computer speakers which seem to work well except that their plug is a little too small for the K3 jack. I remember some posts about that several months ago. I need to dig them out and see what kind of plugs I need to buy for replacement. ...My DVR seems to work, but I have not been able to find any instructions for operating. From the latest beta firmware release notes [with slight editorial from me ]: Support for Digital Voice Recorder option (KDVR3): Note: The following information is more accurate than the DVR instructions in the K3 rev D owner’s manual. * DVR ICON: The DVR icon (dual arrows--above the S-meter) turns on whenever the DVR is in use. The icon flashes slowly during all record operations, and quickly during play. * DVR TX MESSAGES: Message record, play and repeat are functional. (Message chaining will be added in a subsequent release.) To start voice message record, tap REC, then tap M1-M4. Record will start immediately. Tap M1-M4 again to stop recording. To play a voice message, tap M1-M4. To repeat a voice message (e.g., a CQ), *hold* M1-M4 rather than tap. Message play or repeat can be cancelled at any time by tapping REC. [ note: be sure the MIC Gain is set for 5 bars of ALC on voice peaks to get the recording level correct.] * DVR RX LOOP: Hold AF REC to start receive-audio recording. Hold AF REC again to stop record. Up to 90 seconds of audio can be recorded; beyond this, earlier audio will be overwritten. Hold AF PLAY to start playback; press any switch to stop. VFO B will show the playback position in seconds, relative to the most-recently recorded audio segment. During PLAY, you can move forward/backward through RX audio loop buffer by rotating VFO B. An asterisk (*) beside the seconds counter shows the extent of the most recently recorded segment. Note: It is OK to record received audio continuously; this might be useful as a way of catching audio events that you wish to examine later. Record will continue even if you transmit. However, at present, silence is recorded for the duration of any transmission. * DVR RX LOOP PLAY IN TX MODE: First, enter voice transmit mode by holding PTT or tapping XMIT. Then hold AF PLAY to start playback, and press any switch to stop. CMP (speech compression) is automatically disabled. Note: Playback volume of the RX loop buffer during TX mode is not yet adjustable. --- 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] OT: new SS amps
What catches my eye is that comparing the amps on page 1 and page 9, you have to pay $2,000 more for an additional 1.7 dB of gain with the amp on page 9. Sure. you have to know how to adjust an amp and actually tune the one on page 1 whereas the one on page 9 is no tuning (assuming the antenna is tuned or you do the tuning with an external tuner). I guess that's significant to the hard-core contester, but for that convenience along with the 1.7 dB gain you must pay $2,000 for those who demand the ability to QSY across the band or between bands instantly, or who want to operate their station remotely through a computer. [Elecraft] ALC mod, Stereo speaker mod, pull-up resistor mod
I hesitate to write this for fear of scaring off some potential modifiers, but the story is good and positive. I did all 3 of these mods today. (The stereo speaker mod was outlined in a post from Wayne). After reassembly the radio worked fine and I was able to set the amplifier ALC just right. Then, after 3 hours, funny things happened. I could not change frequency. I could not turn off the K3. After disconnecting the power supply, the K3 came on with an ERR PTT message. Looked it up in the manual. Implicates the KIO3, where I had just made modifications. I easily isolated the problem to the digital IO board. Scanning the digital IO board with my illuminated magnifier I initially saw nothing. Then, a faint shiny speck showed up on one of the 8 pin surface mount chips that was shorting two pins. The offending speck was easily removed. It had obviously been created during my mod work, and took 3 hours of aging before it would short out the pins, creating the problem. I usually brush my circuit boards with a tooth brush after soldering to them. I did not do that this time. I will do it next time. All is well. Re: [Elecraft] k3 matching filters
As noted on our orde form, our matched offset filter spec is to within 40 Hz or less, since our 5 pole crystals can vary in center frequency from batch to batch. Set the offset for the two filters identically to the nearest 10 Hz value half way between the two offset values. In your case, set them both to -0.95. This results in a worse case center offset of 20 Hz, which is not detectable. :-) 73, Eric _..._ -Original Message- From: aa1o aa1o.ra...@comcast.net Date: Saturday, Dec 20, 2008 2:30 pm Subject: [Elecraft] k3 matching filters To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net I received the KRX3 and the DVR today and am about to upgrade my k3. Ron, there are other considerations. The tubes available today are made in China. I had very bad luck with two sets of Taylor brand 572Bs that were made in China. One set never worked at all and the other set lasted about a month. I am still using the 572Bs that I bought in 1976 used. So, if you get one of the 811A or 572B amps with Chinese tubes how long will they last? Am I extremely unlucky or did I ruin them intentionally as R. F. Parts accused? I really don't know, but it certainly will weigh heavily on my decision of what amp to buy. In fact, I just bought a used ALS-600. I will see how well that works for me. Tuning is not really a factor for me. If you buy a No Tune solid state amp then need an antenna tuner you have not changed things a lot. But, will you need new tubes in a month or so? Re: [Elecraft] OT: new SS amps
That is why many hams built their own amplifiers back then - a pair of 813s could be obtained for $25 or less back then and there were surplus transformers available at a reasonable cost. There were several pair of 813s in Grounded Grid circuits published back then, followed by the 'pair of 572Bs in GG' designs. BTW - they work just fine today if one can find one of those old homebrew amplifiers - but they are usually large and built on rack mount chassis, some used plug-in coils while others used a PI-network output circuit. Yes, they had to be tuned to resonance and loaded to the correct plate current draw, but that is not much different than adjusting a manual ATU in today's world - we just moved the tuning mechanism outside the amplifier. No Tune amplifiers are not new - Centronics had one available back in the 1960s. 73, Don W3FPR WILLIS COOKE wrote: Sandy, did you ever take a look at what a kilowatt amp cost in 1955? [Elecraft] KX1 / K1-4: Wanted to Trade for KX1 or K1
Wanted to trade for an Elecraft KX1 with all options or Elecraft K1-4 with options. An Hi-Q-Antennas NVIS dipole [or two mobile verticals]. Equipment is heavy duty, well machined, snaps apart with bayonet mounts and the tripod mounting head is for NVIS. Mobile mounting bracket(s) would need to be purchased for use on a truck or SUV – kit has two mobile verticals or one NVIS. This is high quality, extremely well made and highly specialized equipment for NVIS or two mobile verticals. Antenna is essentially a remotely tunable buddipole or buddistick with heavy duty motors inside the loading coils. Best thought of as a buddipole or buddisticks on steroids. No, but a popular mobile amp that ran 600 watts were selling for considerably less. I used a Henry 2K-2 for years until it good too damned heavy for this old man to horse around! I now have an Ameritron AL-811H Much lighter and 500 watts is very adequate. Will run more, but why do it as the 811A's I have will last a long time at 500 watts CW. Solid state would be niceBUT. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, I better get this out before the power and phones go out. I am currently charging the battery to get it as charged as possible. The inevitable power outage will occur some time either today or tomorrow. Our weather is rather wintery here ;) On top of my two feet of snow I am getting another foot to foot and half in short order. The wind has gotten stronger so there is blowing and drifting snow. It is hard to tell which type of snow is flying by because the trees are shedding their loads of snow too. It is difficult to see where my trucks are parked. Luckily my woodpiles are fairly easy to locate. They are some of the larger humps in the snow. Propagation was not so bad this week but past performance does not predict the future. I did read a NASA article about the ionosphere being lower than expected. That may be why conditions have been so odd lately. The last few Fox hunts have been tough indeed. Hearing any of the hounds is difficult but to hear the fox too is almost miraculous. I will have my battery bank ready for tomorrow's nets but I may not be able to post any email report for a few days. I forgot to add in the above weather report the predicted freezing rain for tomorrow. If icing conditions occur like forecast power lines will snap into little bits of wire taking weeks to repair. But, the wood keeps me warm, the camp stove will keep me fed, and there is water in a pond nearby for little necessities :) Please join us tomorrow evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Monday z (Sunday 4 PM PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0300z (Sunday 7 PM PST) 7045 kHz Stay warm, Kevin. Well the ALS 600 I had did not put out 600 on all bands. It was especially down on 80 meters more like 425 to 450 watts although plenty of power. I understand this is typical with the 600 so it makes me wonder if this amp would truly put out 1200 on all bands or even miss 1000 on some bands. Kind of a bummer, no QSK, band decoder or as you see as that added extra in the foreign amps, 6 meters. 73 de KE4WY Jim -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Vic K2VCO Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2008 10:45 PM To: DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL Cc: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: new SS amps DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL wrote: I just ran into this by accident. http://www.ameritron.com/catalog/Ameritron_2009.pdf See page 9. I bought my 572Bs about ten years ago, 10USD for each one. After 5+ QSOs, I replaced it about 3 years ago. Not bad for 30USD investment. I was heard the new 572B is not as good as ten years ago, that is only because the dealer (in US?) need more cheaper 572Bs. All the best! [Elecraft] K3 Power out
Firstly Got the K3 assembled. The transverter board was back ordered and so is the subreceiver so I will be re entering the K3 and adding to it at least twice over the next few months. With that there are a few questions but in the spirit of one at a time; The power supply I have been using in the setup is a Heathkit Power supply which was made for one of their last Transceivers. It's a HP- 1144 and offers 20 Amps out. After calibrating the K3 I tried getting 120 watts out to the dummy load but after the 50 watt calibration, when I held tune down to see how it read. I only got 102-105W out, not 120, though I set he power out at 120W. I'm wondering if the Heath power supply is lacking and that's the reason for the lower maximum output? Yet again, from tonight's reflector digest: So - Now after two mod processes plus installation of the KRX3, my cabinet screws are starting to show a little wear. Those screws heads are too malleable, a few of yours are showing wear and tear. I wish I'd ordered a full set of them -- they're cheap. Maybe they'll be offered by Elecraft. They did give me better side panel heat sink screws (two) for the K2. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Power out
Hello Gary, and congratulations! Opening up the K3 again is not nearly as traumatic as you might think. The POWER control will *ask* for more than the rig can deliver. It's spec'd at 100 watts, and that's what is guaranteed. The K3 can make a bit more than 100 watts on most bands, but that's all it's spec'd to do. When you set the POWER control for a specific output, it tries to adjust the transmitter circuits for that output, but can't do it if it's out of their range. That's what is happening to you at 120 watts. The absolute maximum power will vary by band and to some extent from rig to rig. But since 120 watts is a whole 0.8 dB more than 100 watts, it's not significant on the air. You're probably crowding that 20 amp supply at 100 watts on some bands. The efficiency (and so the current required for a given output power) varies from band to band. I'm running a K3 with a 20 amp supply, but I'm near the limit on some bands at right on 20 amps for 100 watts out, if the SWR is quite low. (Higher SWR's reduce the efficiency so the current goes up!) I don't know whether your supply has a crowbar circuit in it, but my Astron does. It lets me know if I push too hard by simply shutting down. I have to cycle the power supply mains switch to reset it, then turn the K3 on again. RE: [Elecraft] OT: new SS amps
With 8 x MRF150 the ALS-1300 has the same transistor component at a Quadra ... and probably the same power output. What is lacking is six meters, the tuner and QSK. As far as the band decoder ... ALS-1300 will be +12V to select band (all on one RJ-45) vs. Yaesu format BCD for the Quadra (only works with Yaesu radios). I can't see much difference there as one could do the job with a W9XT BCD-10 for $20. QSK probably just needs faster relays ... so it really boils down to is six meters and the tuner worth the extra $1000. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power out
Ron A crowbar circuit is used to disable the power supply in the event of over voltage. The current limit is what would limit the current output of a power supply. A typical crowbar circuit uses a SCR triggered by a voltage sensor. The SCR conducts and shorts the output of the supply. Which in turn puts it into current limit mode and decreases the output voltage to near zero. And yes, a 20 amp supply is marginal for a 100 watt HF rig because of the examples you have given. The 20 amp Astron can be fudged a little bit by increasing the current limit to around 22 amps. The modification involves adding a resistor to the current limit circuit of the 723 regulator. 73 and Merry Christmas to all! It seemed to work well as a backup for the Omni V corsair. Idears? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power out
After measuring the TX IMD on SSB I stopped putting the radio above 100W. IMO the K3 should be limited to 100W, it is sad to see it isn´t. My advice would be, on SSB never go above 199W, on CW it doesn´t matter. Please Elecraft, make a FW change and limit the radio to 100W, thanks! / Jim SM2EKM --- Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: Hello Gary, and congratulations! The transverter board was back ordered and so is the subreceiver so I will be re entering the K3 and adding to it at least twice over the next few months. I'm not looking forward to the disassembly re-assembly but doing the kit sure gave me a great appreciation for the detail and function this marvelous radio has. Absolutely amazing. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] f/w 2.73/1.98 power calibration
After reading about the TXG VCE parameter I reloaded MCU 2.73/DSP 1.98 and attempted to adjust the gain back to a reasonable level. By setting TXG VCE to -3.0 dB I came close to my requested power output on the K3's meter, when set to 40w I get between 4-5 bars on the graph. This is with the 5th bar flickering slightly on the ALC meter. At the same time I also tried the ADC REF calibration and came up with 4.967 v on my Fluke meter, so I set the K3 to 4.97. It seems to me that having to set the TXG VCE to it's minimum setting suggests something is still not quite right with the new firmware... 73, Steve K3/100 #1544 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Sorry made a typo. 199W should be 100W. Jan Erik Holm wrote: After measuring the TX IMD on SSB I stopped putting the radio above 100W. IMO the K3 should be limited to 100W, it is sad to see it isn´t.
