[Elecraft] k3fixtime command line utility for Linux (python)

2009-03-13 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
Here's a quick Linux program in Python, written after reading David's
description below and a few minutes consultation with the K3
Programmer's Manual.

Follow the installation instructions, and then just type k3fixtime
when you want the time fixed.

http://wa5znu.org/log/2009/03/python-k3lib-update.html

The library provides a few other command-line utilities for the K3, plus
a Python programming interface.
I'll likely make it work on other operating systems eventually, but if
someone else wants to take on the task that'd be great too.

David, W4SMT wrote:

I've had a few requests for the K3 time updater I mentioned the other day.
So I've made it available for download.

Mac version (OS X 10.3 or later) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3Time.zip

 Windows XP/VISTA (maybe 98 not sure) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3TimeWin.zip

It's very easy to use and should be self-explanatory.

Re: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realit..

2009-03-13 Thread GW0ETF

Talking of birds Julian and qrp I've just returned from the Gambia where I
did some 20m cw as C56ETF. The pile-ups were impressive but I still kept my
binoculars next to my key to check out that new one in the trees outside the
balconynever had to contend with avian qrm before either - some of them
are *so* loud both in looks and call!

I was pleasantly surprised at the number of qrp stations I worked in the
pile-ups. I never seemed to wind the K3's filtering right down in split,
preferring instead to use the excellent AFX to pluck out stations calling
slightly off the main frequency and that way I could detect the occasional
..QRP.. from the rabble. When the rest of the pile-up finally realised I
wasn't going anywhere until I worked the 'QRP' guy I was able to complete.
Wasn't aware I missed any qrp that called.

The K3 (with a 20m wire dipole) worked really well but the customs at Banjul
did try to extract 40% import duty from me for it...!

Same with radio. It's nice to work something unusual but if I can't do it
with moderate power and antennas I'm not bothered about it.

Anyone can work a long distance with high power and a huge antenna. What
never stops being amazing is when someone hears you from thousands of
miles away and you're using barely enough power to light a torch bulb.

Even the guy at the other end whose antenna, receiver and ears make the
contact possible, can still appreciate the wonder of that.

It'd be nice to be able to run the legal limit into a big beam, but I bet
if I could I'd soon get bored with it.

2009-03-13 Thread Dale Putnam

I'd encourage everyone to try to work at a lower power, yes, it puts a bit more
emphasis on conditions, and a bit more effort for the prop gods, but when it is
all done, holding that qsl card from a Chek, or other Eu country, or Asia, or
pretty much anywhere, that states quite simply that the contact was made with
under 1 watt from his end, and you know you were using less than 5... makes a

One that states proudly, and rightfully so, 250 Milliwatts, is very nice to
hold.

Two el quad on this end at 40 feet, a 6 el yagi at 60 feet on that end.

And it wasn't at the peak of the sunspots either... just the peak of signals of
that day.

[Elecraft] March PBMME and Appalachian Trail

2009-03-13 Thread Ron Polityka
Hello,

Saturday the 14th is the last PBMME for the Polar Bears winter season.

Check out www.n3epa.org for a official list of Polar Bears and the PB's that
will be out on a trail on Saturday.

I will be starting a 7.5 mile hike with Mark de NK8Q. We will setup camp and
operate on Saturday afternoon thru Sunday morning. You can find either of us
around the usual QRP frequencies.

I am still looking for the States of HI and MT to have all 50 States worked
from the Appalachian Trail. I am also looking for a QSO with someone that
would be on the Appalachian Trail in the State of MA or ME for a AT to AT
QSO.

March 2009 will be the start of the 10th season for me going out on the
Appalachian Trail with my QRP radios. So this will be a great way to kick
off the hike and camping over night on the AT. I will probable be on CW most
of the time but I will have my K2 with me and a mic for SSB.

There will be a lot of Polar Bears with their Elecraft radios out on the
trail so look for us in the Elecraft QP this weekend.

If you work any of the Polar Bears that are out on the trail Saturday,
please spot them on the QRP lists.

Absolutely nothing. You can work PSK31 with just the basic K3 either directly
with
your CW paddles using data mode PSK-D, or with your favorite software with a
couple
audio cables between the K3 and the computer soundcard. You can set up PTT
using
the same K3 RS232 connection to the computer.

[Elecraft] Possible K2 sidetone mod

2009-03-13 Thread dw
I don't have my K2 yet…but should have it in about a week..depending on
options.
I noticed in the schematic that the side-tone output(U10B pre-amp) looks
to
be connected as a secondary input to AF-amp(U9 LM380).
This makes me assume that side-tone volume is not fixed, but instead
changes along with, and is a percentage of AF volume.
If that is true, its a setup that I don't prefer.

My (off-the top of my head) solution would be to splice in a 2N3904 on
the output of U10B, and then move that output over to
AF-OUT.

That way, I always have a fixed side-tone volume, no mater what the AF
volume is set at.

Has anyone else done something like this already?

[Elecraft] k2 or k3

2009-03-13 Thread greenacres113
I am sort of a test subject. 2 3? yr.s ago I ran WB4YDLs k2 on CW at our club
FD. Last yr I ran his k3 on CW at FD. Pulled abt 900+ Qs each time. I was
favoring the k2 for a while. But I went to his QTH?and played with the k3. I
was converted. The k3 is a better receiver. The best I've ever tuned.?It has
easier filter selection, 160m,6m, an internal ant. tuner and a lot more toys
internally. I now own k3 #2626 with most bells whistles except the 2nd rx.
?After a month I'm still learning but I love it. This yr. our small club will
be using 2 k3s during FD. CU in the EQP

sending with a paddle and letting the K3 decode for you. I have
worked DXpeditions that way, and a few souls have even worked
contests that way (I don't recommend it).

For more serious PSK or RTTY work, you will want to use your
computer sound card to generate the RTTY or PSK tones and to
decode the tones. Most guys who use only RTTY use MMTTY, a
freeware program that works by itself for general QSOs and
integrates with several contest loggers (Writelog, N1MM) for
contests. For PSK, the nicest software I know of is DM780, also
freeware, distributed by the guy who wrote Ham Radio Deluxe, a
very nice radio control program, also freeware. All of this stuff
is easy to use and install on your computer.

To use this software, you will need three cables between your
computer and the K3. You need a serial cable for radio control, a
cable from the sound card output to the radio input, and one from
the radio output to the sound card input. You should also do the
simple chassis bonding shown in my Power Point.

It's also explained in words in Chapter 8 of

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Data Mode Transmit Issue

2009-03-13 Thread Joe Barger
I had a chance to do a little more investigating today.

In summary, in data mode AFSK A and AFSK TX: OFF, F5 had no ticks (F2 and
F4 had ticks). With AFSK TX: ON, no filter had ticks.

With the data mode in DATA A, AFSK TX made no difference if it was on or
off. F4 and F5 had no ticks, but F2 had the ticks.

I'm not sure AFSK TX has fixed the root cause of the problem it was designed
for. If the noise that the AFSK TX filter was designed to remove is
actually caused by RFI, ground loops, low AF level, ... , why are there
combinations of main filters on receive that don't display the ticks whether
the AFSK TX filter is on or off? F5 never had the ticks on transmit. I
believe that a single TX filter (F2 in my case) is used for transmit, so why
do the various choices of RX filters affect the transmit ticks? Of
course, the ticks I'm hearing may not be related to the other reported
noise sources at all, but there still seems to be a problem.

Can anyone else reproduce these results? Any thoughts Lyle?

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Data Mode Transmit Issue

 The setup:

 K3 with latest firmware.

 Main Filters installed:
 F2 2.7 KHz
 F4 500 Hz
 F5 200 Hz

F2 configured for all RX/TX modes
F4 and F5 configured for CW and Data RX

 Configuration:
 TX Test (no RF out)
Audio fed into line in (but no difference with mic input)
Line in set for 4 bars ALC (but doesn't seem to make any difference how
 many bars)
 Data Mode selected
Monitor turned up to comfortable level.

If F5 is selected as the RX filter, all is well. But if either of the
other filters is selected for RX and tones are transmitted, the tones have
an audible tick with a frequency of (I'm guessing) around 40 Hz on top
of the tone. The frequency of the tick changes slightly as the frequency
of the tone changes. Audio input levels don't change the tick until the
audio level approaches 0, then the ticks go away. Modifying shift or
bandwidth doesn't affect the tick. Audio input signal is clean. Change
the RX filter back to F5 and all is well again. Switch to USB and all is
 well with any filter.

My guess is there is something funny (a bug?) with the selection of the
 Data TX filter.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

 Thanks

No, the side-tone volume is adjustable independent of the AF gain setting.
The AF gain pot is between the product detector and the LM380.
Sidetone volume is set through the menu, and is controlled via pin 1
of the DAC (U8) on the control board.
Sidetone enters the LM380 without going through the AF gain pot.
The LM380 output then goes directly to the headphones or speaker (see
sheet 1 of the RF board schematic).

Okay... I have ordered a KX1 with the ATU, paddle, and 30/80 board and was
wondering if there was a recommended order for construction.

I was finally able to find some older messages that seemed to run almost
unanimous to proceed with the KX1 basic kit first, then add the options one
at a time. I did see that I could mount L6 on the opposite side of the PC
board in anticipation of the 30/80 board, but otherwise should just follow
the manual and complete the KX1.

So... That was it, and it didn't seem necessary to repost and get flamed for
not having research enough.

But, now that it's out there... Does anyone have any suggestions for me ?

I'm expecting the package to arrive next Tuesday.

[Elecraft] K3 Hardware Upgrades

I did upgrades today for early K3 #272.

I considered these necessary:
12v sense PA
REMIO UPGD RS232 isolation
and AFOPMDKT speaker short circuit protection.

I also ordered a new top cover to match the beautiful textured
top cover Elecraft is sending with new K3s. The sides and bottom
seem the same, already textured. And for some odd reason the side
panels are even more expensive than the top. ???

Re: [Elecraft] Building a KX1

2009-03-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ron,

Yes, you have the order of things correct. If you are a very
experienced builder and have great confidence in your ability to make
things work the first time through without interim testing, then you can
integrate the KX1 and the KXB3080, but I would not recommend that for
the first time through.

If you do want to try it, you could build the KX1 without installing L7,
C1, C26 and C27.
Then follow the KXB3080 instructions *only* through page 4.
At that point, you may test the KX1 on 40 and 20 meters.
Once that combination is aligned working well, start on page 5 of the
KXB3080 manual and finish it.

One more note - do *not* add the KX1 Power Mod (included with the
KXB3080 kit) unless your KX1 is not capable of producing 3.5 watts with
a 13.8 volt power supply (3 watts with a 12 volt supply). Most of the
KX1s with the newer PA transistor do not need the power mod, and running
much over 4 watts for a period of time can damage the components in the
PA output circuit.

[Elecraft] K3 Hardware Upgrades - correction

2009-03-13 Thread Don Rasmussen

I stand corrected on the price of the cabinet parts, the reason the side panels
were more expensive was I ordered two of them. ;-)

Top Panel $37.40 - expensive yet IMO worth it based on the change of finish.

Side Panel $31.40 - not any change that I can see and even if there was, a
trifle spendy for my tastes. I'll be returning $62.80 worth of side panels.

[Elecraft] What info is available on the KPA100 thermal characteristics?

Just an off-the-cuff question.
Are there any specs on the KPA100 heat-sink?
Or any info at all on temperature rise with transmit duty cycle.

I've looked through the KPA100 manual.

It looks like we're using thermal pads instead of thermal heat-sink
compound.
Don't know what the pads are, so not sure what the thermal
characteristics is on those?

Does anyone know what the heat-sink thermal resistance rating is?

There is no real reason to not do these mods, they have no unwanted side

Elecraft postings. I have to delete the postings via webmail otherwise they
keep downloading scores of copies.

Gary and All,

Well, interesting conjecture, but nowhere close to a valid
test of either rig.

I'm wondering if we took a ham into a room, blindfolded,
 sat him or her down
if front of a K2 and K3, didn't let them touch either one,
 if he or she could
tell which is the K2 and K3? I would have to be someone
 that doesn't have any
experience with either one. I wonder which one would win
 based on sound
alone. Also, they would have to use headphones rather
 than the internal
 speakers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Hardware Upgrades

2009-03-13 Thread Brian Alsop
Natural questions:
1) What are symptoms of them not being cut?
2) About what vintage main RF board are they not cut?

At least it looks easy to get to.

Although I don't recall seeing anything about it on here, the latest
KRX3 Errata Sheet C-6, dated 3 March 2009 refers to the cutting of two
tracks on the main RF board to ensure D-A converters always receive the
proper signal level.

I have yet to do this mod on my K3.

In a recent message, Dave G4AON elecr...@astromag.co.uk writes

I have now done all the hardware mods to my K3, none were particularly
difficult to do. I even did modifications that are of no use to me, such
as the -ve ALC and pull up resistor mods... At least my K3 is close to
the same mod state as the current production units. The AF amplifier
(replacement RF choke feeding the audio amp) did not seem to make any
difference at my station, I am using a pair of HiFi bookshelf speakers.
Likewise the line out mod didn't appear to make any difference, although
for the most part I run Amtor or Pactor rather than sound card data modes.

There is no real reason to not do these mods, they have no unwanted side
effects and may in fact be of benefit.

Jim Chick wrote:
Can someone please tell me why we now appear to get numerous repeat copies
of the complete digest listings. It is very tedious and time wasting.

Assuming it isn't a deliberate denial of service attack, someone who
doesn't know how to use their email client is trying to reply (or post
by tail-ending) to a non-MIME list digest (or using a mail client with
particularly poor MIME digest handling), without pruning it, and is
failing to realise the havoc they are causing. I suspect it may prove
necessary to bar them from the list.

I'm not sure why we aren't getting the complete digest as I didn't think
that gmail had particularly small size limits.

non-MIME digests should only be used for replies as a last resort and
only if you have a thorough understanding of the internals of internet
email protocols. Whilst you can prune out the other articles, you will
still break threading.

[Elecraft] Topband Dinner at Visalia

2009-03-13 Thread Jim Brown
Friends,

I'm trying to reserve a seat at the Visalia topband dinner, and just
tried to post a request on the Topband reflector asking the person
organizing the dinner to contact me. W4ZV, the administrator of
topband, rejected my post as inappropriate. Huh? Since when is a
topband dinner at a major hamfest off topic of a topband email list?

Anyhow, I'm still trying to reserve a seat at the Visalia topband
dinner. Would someone pass the word for me to whoever is organizing
it?

Thanks and 73,

Jim Brown K9YC
