Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available
Following this thread with Lance, carefully. I'm not sure I will run eme with my KX3 but will probably run WSJT on the 600m band. My 600m transmitter uses a PB dc relay for TR so need more delay. Can I not use my K3USB cable and tap out the RTS line (DB9 pin7) to control the GPIO line to accomplish PTT with sw control? Will use of the GPIO line require special changes to the firmware to accomplish PTT? [Elecraft] K144XV + K144RFLK issue
HI All I dipped into the Elecraft world again with a K3/10 Plus Tvtr IF and K144XV Mainly as a transverter driver I bought the reflock for the radio and the transverter All is fine and my box is alive and well Just installed the K144XV and I notice an unusual change in receive freq when looking at a local beacon on 144 Every 3 secs or so it jumps about 10 Hz high or so then returns back to its normal freq - then 3 secs later does the same again not sure why its doing this any advice appreciated I have done all the cal routines and the main unit has 10 MHz applied and is locked - flashing * on the cal entry I only just purchased it so I assume the firmware would be the latest? Re: [Elecraft] Product Information
Hi All, The trouble with making proposed product announcements is that some of us then become incensed when the schedule is not met. Before becoming an Elecraft user, TenTec was my stable and they had made some loose commitments at hamfests and to a lesser degree on the reflector which when not delivered caused outrage by a number of people. For me it is nice that Elecraft indicates what is in the pipeline and when possible dates they may be considering but these must be taken with a large amount of tolerance. The people working on the KAT500 are perhaps not the people working on the P3SVGA monitor. None of us can push our pet to the front of the queue. I too suffer from impatience and have a P3SVGA on order but it will be better to have bugs ironed out before delivery. We have a very responsive group in Elecraft. This forum remains interesting and my observations mean little. No offence is meant. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available
Hi Ed, Yes, you can use your K3USB cable to gain access to the RTS line, but you would have to select the optional KXSER cable (no charge exchange) to mate it to your KX3. Apparently there is space inside that DB9 connector to mount a small resistor and 2N to change the HIGH RTS line to a short that can be applied to the PTT ring in the mic connector. The GPIO approach will require a firmware change, and would require you to break out the RTS line anyway, and then splice into another connector tooI am sure there are others interested in doing this. I THINK this might be the easiest way, although perhaps it would be possible to add another stereo jack next to the mic connector to short for PTTwill have to see what the space issues look like inside the unit. [Elecraft] K3 a few new user questions
Hi I have a few queries re operating my new K3/100 (# 6231). I am using it with the P3 + Microham MK II for all modes - CW, SSB, RTTY PSK31. It also has the KAT3 ant tuner. I am in a monthly series of UK 80 metre contests where each week you use a different mode but I have some problems:- Qu. 1 For CW, whilst holding down the Band switch does indeed bring QSK onto the LED screen, it does not in fact switch full break in on, the rig remains at semi break in. What else do I need to do to get full QSK? Qu.2 On 80 metres SSB, I can only get USB displayed even using the Reverse switch does not bring in LSB. Could this be related to me also using PSK on 80M too? There is no trouble with USB/LSB on other bands. Qu.3 RTTY operates fine on 80 metres using the FSK-D mode, but what is the best method for PSK? Is it the PSK-D mode or the DATA A mode, as so far, I'm not having much success setting up either of them? Any help would be appreciated 73 de Ray, G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Not just RS-232 either. A few years ago I had two band decoders, and they would work fine on one LPT port but not on the other. Turned out the questionable port was only delivering 3.3 volts as logic 1, not quite enough for the band decoder. 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 and arcluster.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 3/6/2012 12:36 AM, Jim Brown wrote: On 3/5/2012 12:58 PM, Oliver Dröse wrote: you should*NOT* apply RTS directly to the GPIO pin! Re: [Elecraft] Remote rig versus homebrew challenges
Hi Dave, Well, indeed there is a simple checklist that I wrote some time ago and keep up to date. I am sending it to you via a separate mail. It walks you through the steps to install RemoteRig and make it essentially a plug play solution. You still need basic network knowledge or find someone who does, since port forwarding is necessary. However, I can set that up from here using Teamviewer if absolute necessary. If anyone else on the reflector needs the checklist or any help, just let me know. I have installed several dozen of these already. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 06.03.2012 14:04, David Windisch wrote: Gol dern it Mitch, I like the concept, *but* it simply ain't PNP, to me, at least. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available
Ed, For digital modes, you must provide audio input to the microphone connector - just use a stereo plug and connect the audio to the tip - the PTT is on the ring, so you only need 3 plugs, one for the headphone jack and one for the microphone jack, and the other for the ACC1 (data) jack. It might prove useful to construct a variation the interface Skip Teller KH6TY published in QST for July 2010. The variation is to add wires from RXD and TXD (plus Signal Ground) to a 3.5mm stereo plug (effectively adding your own version of the KX3SER cable) I believe it provides exactly what is needed for the PTT Data mode operation - plug it into a real serial port or the K3USB cable (or similar USB to serial cable). At least, that is how I would do it if I wanted everything to be in one package. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/6/2012 4:01 AM, Edward R. Cole wrote: Following this thread with Lance, carefully. Re: [Elecraft] Remote rig versus homebrew challenges
There are probably many different type of applications of remote control of a ham station. Basically I distinguish between 1) control of a truly remote station (with better antennas than what you can get at the operators site) 2) control of your home station when you are away from home. Why distinguish? Because in case 1) you don't necessarily need a computer at the operating position. As others point out, it may even be an advantage to use a dedicated system like RemoteRig. However, in case 2) you very often need to carry a laptop anyway, so the use of RemoteRig means carrying additional hardware. Even more, iIn case 2) you can do away with a laptop without any special programs installed for the rig control. You can use Logmein which you can reach with a browser. You do need e.g. Skype installed though. In case 2) you can even do away with just an iPhone using Mike KS7D's neat app called K3iNetwork. You probably can see I'm the typical case 2) user. I've been that for over 5 years now with 15k remote QSOs or more. Lately having much fun using the iPhone - it works fine up to 24 wpm on CW with my fingersize :-) If I will have to live in a place without antennas, I will become a type 1) user and then I will use RemoteRig and K3 (or KX3) to K3 remote control. 73 de OZ4UN Paul -Oprindelig meddelelse- Fra: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] På vegne af Mitch Wolfson DJØQN Sendt: 5. marts 2012 18:12 Til: Keith Heimbold Cc: Elecraft Group Emne: Re: [Elecraft] Remote rig versus homebrew challenges Hi Keith, That is a very broad set of questions. I have successfully ran remote stations using computer control only for several years, but have migrated almost everything to the RemoteRig hardware. This brings a number of advantages and disadvantages, for example: * Advantages over traditional remote control methods: o Embedded device - set and forget. User can not mess-up the interface such as they can on a PC running Windows. o No PC needs to be running at the remote site o Small size and low power consumption (2.2 watts using 13.8 volts) o No issue with installing and running in a rough environment such as a mountaintop o High quality audio (using SIP protocol) with selectable CODEC's o Extremely low latency (about 20 ms). I know of users that use RemoteRig for QSK CW at 40 WPM over the internet o Built-in CW keyer allowing the use of a paddle o Two built-in serial port servers for e.g. CAT and one other device (e.g. rotator or amplifier) o Support for multiple locations (profiles) to switch between remote station locations on the fly o Support for a virtual FSK COM port, and/or the operator can use digital modes (e.g. AFSK, PSK31, etc.) by connecting an audio cable to the control RRC box o When using a transceiver that has a separate control head, such as the TS-480, or the twin concept, such as the K3 Twin (2x K3's or a K3 + K3/0), one can use the control head or other rig at the remote location as if the rest of the transceiver is also local. This makes for a better user experience than being dependent upon using only PC software for transceiver control. * Disadvantages over traditional remote control: o Cost is about $500 per set (would however save money if a PC is not installed remotely) o Requires some networking knowledge to make the initial set-up, after that essentiall plug and play o Cost of 2nd K3 or K3/0 if you wish to have the K3 Twin experience As far as your problems are concerned: - You can pass CAT over COM2 on the RRC's and just run that on your local PC, HRD or whatever software you wish to use. - You can pass the rotator over COM1 on the RRC's and just run a software control over the internet So yes, I believe that this will solve your problems. -- You need to first decide if you will go the Twin route, or just run computer control on the control side You need to buy: - The set of 2x RRC's - If going the Twin route, then either a 2nd K3, or the K3/0 - The appropriate cable set depending upon the hardware configuration used If you have any further questions, just drop me a mail. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 05.03.2012 17:36, Keith Heimbold wrote: I'm trying to figure out the best way to do remote and I'm really struggling with trying to homebrew remote with HRD and other application Skype included. Re: [Elecraft] Remote rig versus homebrew challenges
Hi Paul, Note that the use of the RRC Micro PC Client does not require one to carry more than a small (matchbox sized) dongle with a small headset to match. This gives you access to the RemoteRig installation through your laptop/notebook, using a control program such as HRD. See http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=28 for details. I use serial port servers (such as from Lantronix) to provide the serial ports used for linears and rotors over the internet, a computer is very seldom needed. I am gradually eliminating all remote computers and replacing them by these servers. As an alternative, there are also some excellent web-based controllers for rotors, SteppIR and Acom 2000a available through RemoteRig, see http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=1010 for more details. The list of possibilities actually goes on and on and there is never a right or wrong method, just the one that fits your needs and pocketbook. It is fine to use a remote computer with Skype and local serial ports if that fits your needs. It certainly is cheaper if you already have everything available. 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 06.03.2012 16:39, Poul Erik Karlshøj (PKA) wrote: There are probably many different type of applications of remote control of a ham station. * Disadvantages over traditional remote control: o Cost is about $500 per set (would however save money if a PC is not installed remotely) o Requires some networking knowledge to make the initial set-up, after that essentiall plug and play o Cost of 2nd K3 or K3/0 if you wish to have the K3 Twin experience As far as your problems are concerned:

Ray, In answer to Qu3, I use DATA-A for PSK31 and it works like a dream. I simply tune the band, put the rig in Data mode and set it to DATA-A, turn down my output power to about 20 or 25 watts, and away I go. Re: [Elecraft] K3 a few new user questions
Re Qu. 1: Note that QSK requires that both the VOX and the QSK indicators be activated; if QSK is visible on the K3's display but VOX is not, QSK will not work. Hold the left end of the band switch for VOX and the right end for QSK. Also, do you have PTT enabled in the microHam Router? You will have to disable PTT in the microHam Router to allow either semi-breakin or full breakin to work. Re Qu. 2: Which switch are you using for Reverse? The mode reverse switch is labelled ALT; it is activated by holding the left end of the mode switch. The switch labelled REV between A/B and AB is actually a momentary-contact version of A/B. If the ALT switch is not switching between USB and LSB, then you might have a hardware problem with the switch. Re Qu. 3: The only programs I know of that can use PSK D are the K3 Utility and G4ILO's KComm. The vast majority of PSK31 programs (Digipan, DM780, Fldigi, MixW, MMVARI, WinWarbler, and many others) only work with an audio mode such as DATA A. With the K3 in DATA A, check that MAIN:MIC SEL is set to LINE IN (this is remembered per-mode, so this won't upset your SSB settings), then use the K3's MIC control to adjust the Line In level. Put the K3's meter in ALC mode and adjust the Line In level so that the ALC meter reads 4-5 bars on an idling PSK31 signal. Use the PWR control to set power (use no more than 50 watts for good linearity). The settings that work in DATA A for PSK31 will also work in AFSK A for RTTY, except that you don't need to worry about non-linearity and you can run the power up to 100 watts for RTTY. 73, Rich VE3KI Ray, G3XLG wrote: I have a few queries re operating my new K3/100 (# 6231). [Elecraft] For Sale: K2 Option Modules--KIO2, KNB2, KDSP2
Hi gang, I have for sale three option modules for an Elecraft K2 transceiver, all of which I bought from Elecraft in 2009 or later. The first module is a not-yet-built KIO2 RS-232 Serial Interface kit, new and untouched, which I will sell for $60. If you wish, I am willing to include an Elecraft KUSB USB Adapter for the KIO2 (or KPA100) with the KIO2 for an additional $20, which would bring the total price to $80. The KUSB is new in the original package and has never been taken out or used. The second module is a not-yet-built KNB2 Noise Blanker kit, new and untouched, which I will sell for $40. The third module is a fully assembled KDSP2 Advanced Internal DSP Filter / Clock kit, which I will sell for $90. I am an experienced kit builder, I assembled the KDSP2 with great care, and I have double checked the board and found no soldering errors or component placement errors. However, I have *not* taken the final step of testing the KDSP2 in a K2 (I no longer have a K2 in which to test it), so I cannot guarantee that the unit works properly. Therefore, I am selling the KDSP2 as is, with no warranty. I will include the appropriate manual with each module. The aforementioned prices include shipping within the U.S. Payment by USPS postal money order only. If the beacon's transmitter is crystal controlled with the crystal in an oven, the jumps in frequency you hear could be due to the beacon not your K144XV. Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Schedule
It is my understanding the amp is a stand-alone unit that will work with any rig. The same can't be said for the module in the K2 where the K2-specific circuitry is required to run the amp. If it is truly independent, and remotable in, say, your car trunk then it would have to be totally independent if just the coax is shared (and power). Maybe there is a band control circuit that will let the amp follow the rig? I know some of the lower end RM Italy, or similar, amps use sensing for auto band switching so maybe that is the route Elecraft is going. If so that would be real nice! Maybe in the future if I get an amp for my QRP gear the one for the KX3 will be all I need - and an American made one at that. Well wait a minute, an amp for QRP? Isn't that an oxymoron? The above NOAA Type II radio alert means the CME resulting from this flare, escaping the sun, produced type II radio sweeps, which is used to measure the velocity of the CME as it punches through the sun's magnetic field lines. In this case, a whomping 2273 km/sec., or a little over half-million miles per hour. This shock wave will lose some speed on it's way to earth, but will still be a significant blast of solar wind when it arrives compared to the present 374 km/sec. The X5 solar flare came from region 1429, which is approaching the center of the sun. Therefore, we won't get a direct hit from this approaching shock wave, but we'll likely get far more than a glancing blow. This, of course, can produce a major geomagnetic storm when it arrives in about 3 days. Region 1429 is a very active region with strong and organized magnetic field lines. If it continues to grow in size, it could produce more M and X class flares over the next few days. And as others have noted, a few flares here and there always raises the daily solar flux. I'd keep an eye on solar activity on the following NOAA website: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/today.html Top chart shows the solar x-ray flux. You can see the X5 flare right at the beginning of Mar. 7 UTC. The second chart shows the proton flux (currently elevated, though not due to the flare) and the K-index. Currently, the K-index is4 (green bars) meaning a quiet geomagnetic field. When the shockwave arrives, the K-index will quickly change to storm status, yellow or red bars. HF propagation is usually highly degraded (and noisy) during a geomagnetic storm, which lasts in the orders of several hours. General rule of thumb (not exact science): There will be a radiation storm following an M or X class flare on the sunlit side of the planet. This will cause QRN on HF for a few tens of minutes after the flare. Once the short-lived radiation storm ends, this radiation also ionized our ionosphere and the E and F layers for enhanced propagation and raising the MUF into the higher bands (15 and 10M). Therefore, shortly after a major flare to local sundown, enhanced HF propagation becomes very conducive to QRP signals. About 3 days later, if the shock wave hits Earth, it will likely trigger a geomagnetic storm that last several hours. Working HF is difficult for the duration of the geomagnetic storm. Keep an eye on ol' sol. She's waking up, but who knows for how long. 72, Paul NA5N __ QRP-L mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/qrp-l Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:qr...@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] WinTest and K3 DVK
I am passing along the following for the benefit of anyone who would like to control their K3's DVK messages from WinTest. Ever since I got my K3 over a year ago, I have wished for a way to trigger the DVK messages from WinTest. I mentioned this to Bob, WA1Z, and he told me about setting up LUA Scripts using Scripts Manager to control the K3's DVK messages from the keyboard. I went through the procedures that Bob pointed me to (scripts developed by N6TV), and in a short while I had them working. I was now able to key the K3's M1, M2, M3 and M4 voice messages from selected keyboard keys. I got this working just before ARRL DX SSB, and it saved my voice from a weekend of abuse! Here are the references provided by Bob, WA1Z: Setting up LUA Scripts using Scripts Manager: http://docs.win-test.com/wiki/Menu:Tools#Scripts_Manager The Win-Test Wiki doc doesn't go into specific details about setting up scripts for the K3 DVK (as LUA scripts can be used for far more than DVK control). However, there are specific instructions in N6TV's script repository: _http://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/wtscripts/_ (http://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/wtscripts/) - many scripts developed by N6TV, including those for the K3's DVK. In the K3scripts.zip file, there is a README file (Readme_K3Scripts.txt) with specific setup instructions as well as summary descriptions of the specific WTS scripts. Detailed documentation of individual script implementation is limited to comments in the code. I would especially like to thank Bob, N6TV, for not only writing the K3/DVK scripts, but for making them available along with well written instructions provided in his README file. 73, George, K5KG George Wagner, K5KG Sarasota, FL 941-400-1960 cell __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 a few new user questions
Hi Rick, You're right about that. There is a lot of RTTY software that will key the K3 in FSK D using the old-fashioned hardware method, the same as you would use with any radio other than the K3 (or KX3). In fact, the only popular Windows RTTY software that will not do this is software that won't do FSK RTTY at all, i.e. HRD(DM780) and Fldigi. But if you want to do FSK using the K3's radio control serial connection only, without a separate FSK keying connection, you're very limited in your choice of software. 73, Rich VE3KI Rick K6LE wrote: When I talk about RUMlog (and the K3 utility) using FSK-D I am talking about using it \ via the serial connection not by a separate FSK connection. I'm hoping AB0RX is able to borrow the video to show at our BEARS-STL (Boeing Employees Amateur Radio Society - St. Louis) meeting in a couple of weeks. BTW: the Missouri QSO Party is coming up shortly. There is a QRP category this year! http://www.w0ma.org/mo_qso_party.htm Mike, N0SO Tonight's presentation at the meeting of our club (see www.MVDXCC.org) was a nice video of the STØR expedition. Unlike some of the recent expeditions, not all the equipment was Elecraft, but K3s appeared prominently at several of the operating stations. If you ever have a chance to see the video, check it out. This was a big and highly organized expedition, as was evident to all the many DXers who worked them. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3, ergonomy and performances
Hi to the group, I read with great interest the KX3 user manual. Two questions to the Elecraft team. The KX3 home use is clearly envisaged. In a vast majority of cases, you need to have a near vertical front panel to operate ergonomicaly a rig. Do you plan to sell a stand, like the one for the front panel of the TS-480, to operate the KX3 at home ? IMD2 is a major issue in Europe, where strong BC signals on lower SW bands recombine and appear as IMD in the upper ham bands. The KX3 is the first Elecraft rig with electronic switching of the receiver RF filters, others used relays. Can you tell if the IMD2 rejection of KX3 will be in the league as K2 and K3 ? Thank you and best regards Georges __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The KX3 was designed from the beginning to be operated at about a 30- degree angle with respect to the table. It has tilt feet in the rear that establish this angle. The LCD has a perfect viewing angle for this style of operation. The attached paddle and all controls were all optimized with this in mind, too. Try it :) The KX3 can also be used hand-held, or in your lap, etc. But it works very well on a desk, picnic table, or other flat operating surface. Our KX3 field testers in Italy and Germany have had *no* IMD2 (or IMD3) problems that I know of, even on 40 meters. This is probably because we used: - very high-performance RF switches for the band-pass filters, preamp, and attenuator - large PIN diodes at the input to the T/R switch - a multi-pole high-pass characteristic within the T/R switch (to attenuate mega-size BC band stations below 1.5 MHz that might affect switches and diodes) - our own custom high-level mixer - latching relays for the low-pass filters and ATU There are three related features: - a built-in carrier-operated relay (I've transmitted at 10 watts into the KX3 without damaging it) - an RF preselector for the 300-1500 kHz range that is supplied with the ATU option - a high-performance RF isolation amp that eliminates LO leakage when needed (if another radio is being used close by on the same band) That said, a superhet transceiver with very high intercept, like the K3, will have the edge in broadcast band IMD2. But so far, the KX3 is holding its own in Europe. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
