Re: [Elecraft] K3 - EZ problem

2012-05-25 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA
I too have seen this exception error with the latest version of K3- EZ.
And I too chose to ignore it but it came up repeatedly in the program.
The clincher for me however was that there are no re-size or scroll bars
available in any screen in the software, which on a small screened netbook
are mandatory.

I used it with an Intel Atom powered Acer Aspire One netbook with a 1.8GHz
Dual Core processor and 2GB of RAM.

The software is no longer installed as it it useless without being able to
see all of the settings etc.

The K3 has a RS232 input for radio command. It has a macro language that
uses plain english command syntax that is very flexible. You can write
 macros to do almost anything.

What you need is a terminal emulator with some code memory to do the
dirtywork of sending the commands and inserting the frequencies from a
 keypad to the radio.

 This device does that:

 http://www.genovation.com/900.htm

I use these at work in our museum applications. They work just fine and are
quite rugged. Once you create the program and download it to the pad's
EEPROM memory, you dont need the computer anymore.

Ive not tried this particular one on my K3, as I use a PS2 version with N1MM
to send macro commands with a single button push, but some of you more
enterprising folks out there that have a much better grasp of the macro
language could probably make this tool do exactly what you want. That way,
we can reduce the engineering overhead to Elecraft so that they can
 concentrate on radio functionality.

For my operating, I dont need it... I simply type the frequency into N1MM's
(or Logger32's) entry window and Im where I want to be. You guys used to
using Icoms with the silly red and white numbers on the key pad that always
confused the hell out of me when changing bands would love this thing.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 remote keypad option

2012-05-25 Thread Brian Alsop
Of course, if one uses the port for rig control, SKIMMER, a P3, or
anything else, one would have to resort to a virtual port program which
allows several devices to talk to the K3. I also believe the the keypad
device will have to work at a speed of 38K.

In concept this is just a PIC with a level converter.

On MS Windows, one of the default savers has been a slide show that will

The Linux savers (based on Xscreensaver) also have a slide show

They generally are different ground issues. The radio is typically
connected to the antenna system ground (even when antennas are pulled)
and the computer is connected to the power system safety ground. In
addition, many computers keep the USB power alive during sleep and
often even when turned off.

A nearby lightning strike can result is differences of several volts
between the chassis (antenna/RF ground) and the power safety ground
which shows up across the USB power (increases or decreases it). USB
power greater than 7 or 8 volts or negative can and will destroy the
USB UART and other USB powered components in most equipment. Better
manufacturers are now adding surge suppressors to the USB power and
data lines in their devices but they are not 100% protection.

Proper grounding and bonding are essential.

[Elecraft] K3-4.51 Firmware

2012-05-25 Thread Fred Jensen
I installed it, it works. We have electric fences around us, and I
often hear them, especially in the spring when weeds grow up and they
arc. I find them with my KX1 and the neighbors just let me fix them.
I've got a strong one that just started, I think it's ours. The
pastures are still a bit squishy in places and I wasn't looking forward
to the KX1 trip when I discovered the 4.51 IF Noise Blanker takes it
completely out on NAR4. I wasn't aware the NB was changed in 4.51 but
the NB never took the fences out before.

NR is radically better too. I've been leaving it engaged all the time,
it really kills the power line hash. I don't know what to do with AGC.
It's sort of like my wife sending me to the grocery store to get salad
dressing and I'm standing in front of the shelves with way more choices
than I'm prepared to make. In the case of the K3 AGC, I don't even know
how I *want* it to perform, let alone how to make it do that. I'm sure
one of my better informed friends will eventually give me the K3 AGC
Cliff Notes.

2012-05-25 Thread david Moes
Im new to the K3 and only have had it a month now and I too was baffled
and confused even before 4.51 about agc, oh heck I was baffled and
confused before that even but that's besides the point.I just loaded
4.51 yesterday so I pulled out what I now call the K3 Bible KE7X's
book The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, And Operation a book
well known on this reflector. I read the AGC section. It helped
allot but what was more helpfull was the section on KE7X's web page
http://www.ke7x.com/ under K3 miscellaneous information in K3 AGC story
Chapters 1-3 plus the info on 4.51.Give it a read and you might find
a better understanding of the new AGC. as to what to do now? time
and trial will tell and I am sure that with the wide range of settings
there will be a million this is the best setting opinions out
there. One of the many things that attracted me to the K3 was that
you could customize so many aspects and not just except what the maker
thinks the masses want. I cant really say Ive noticed a big change
in the way the NR works but I havn't really had time to test it either.
I guess they all work hand in hand.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Noise Reduction

2012-05-25 Thread Phil Hystad
A silly thing to debate -- but, it has always meant To Be Done. In fact, I
have never known any other definition in the world of computer programming
where it is often used as a comment to a section of code. So, at least for
programming, To Be Done is it. Always has been since I started programming in
1965 (and, I am still programming and I still put TBD in code comments every
now and then).

But, a slight comment nod to Ron (AC7AC). I think that TBD is more accurately
called an initialism and not an acronym. An acronym is a word formed by
letters of a phrase or sentence such as sonar or radar. Thus, an acronym can
be pronounced and used as a word. An initialism is a set of letters that are
usually not pronounced or they receive a pronunciation from common practice.
For example, CEO, HTML, and SQL are all initialisms. And, SQL has a common
practice of pronunciation of Sequel although technically that is not correct
and I believe the SQL standard stipulates this. Sequel is actually the name of
a similar language developed by IBM that preceded SQL.

Enough debate there is a CW contest to going on.

I don't use it, I'm sort of CW-only, but I have played with it. For CW,
it is fairly picky about bandwidth, the threshold setting when you hold
TEXT DECODE, and general conditions. CW is a pretty tough decode for

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Text Decoder

2012-05-25 Thread John Ragle
Fred is absolutely correct when he says CW is a pretty tough decode for
machinery. Consider the difference between a RTTY signal (or a BPSK
signal, etc) and a CW signal...For the former types of signal, there is
what one might call background information present (the idle signal)
even when no text is being sent. This is used to sync the decode
process. For CW the situation is entirely different: when the flow of
alphanumeric information stops, there is nothing present for the
machinery to look at, at all...just spectral noise. IF the CW is sent
with rock-solid precision, as from a tape, then the decode proceeds OK,
but for ordinary CW, even with a keyer, there are random pauses, spacing
errors, etc. This partial inability to decode CW is not the fault of the
K3 -- FLDIGI has the same problem, and for (I suspect) the same reason.
On HF I am mostly a CW or other digital person, and CW copy is, IMHO,
best done by the little grey cells.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Noise Reduction

2012-05-25 Thread Joseph Trombino, Jr
Not wanting to add to the noise on the definition of TBD, but I thought I
would share my experience on this one.

I spent more than a few years in the U.S. government and worked on a few design
teams...and to us in government and the contractors that worked for us TBD
meant to be determined on all of our design programs.

So now that I have just added to the confusion I will say good night Gracie.
