[Elecraft] Felt washer source?

2013-04-14 Thread Barry N1EU
I know this was discussed WAY back when in the earlier days of the K3.
I need a felt washer, the type that sits between the vfo tuning knob
and the front panel. Can anyone suggest a local source?

Thanks 73, Barry N1EU

You can get felt washers at Walmart. Go to the automotive batteries. I
don't know if the hole would be too big or not, but you can try it and see.

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Internal NiMH Power Supply Voltage after Charge

2013-04-14 Thread Steven C Veal
Hello group:

Last night I installed new NiMH batteries (the Powerex 2700 MaH variety) into
my week old KX3 for the first time and set them for a 12 hour charge. After the
charge was complete, the KX3 PS display indicates a power supply voltage of
only 10.8 volts, which drops to well below 10.0 volts on transmit.

I'm sure that this is lower than it should be. I haven't re-opened the case to
check for bad or ill-fitting cells yet as it is a little bit of a tricky open.

So I guess the questions are these.
1) What voltage have other group members experienced with the internal NiMH PS
after charge?
2) What charge duration are other folks using?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Those are not the low-discharge variety, so are likely totally
discharged on arrival. 2700/200 is 13.5h, and you need to charge more
than rated capacity because charging is not 100% efficient. So for
2700, 16h is definitely warranted, and I might recommend 18h on first
charge, but you can't set that. I'd give it another 4h, maybe 6h
(humuan in the loop timing control from 8h :-). Undercharging is scary
because it can lead to cell imbalance and you really don't want to
reverse bias NiMH batteries.

10.8V/8cells is 1.35 V/cell. For a NiMH under any load, that's very
much charged.

10.0V is 1.25 V/cell. At rest, that indicates a discharged cell, but
under any significant load there is no problem.

Set your BAT MIN to lower; probably 8.4V makes sense (1.05 V/cell, which
you may well see under transmit loads), or even 8.2V.

When doing test discharges on NiMH cells, I use 200 mA and discharge to
0.9V, using a MAHA C9000. That corresponds to 7.2V for 8 cells. I
recommend getting one of those chargers and measuring your cell's
capacities before putting them into service and then yearly or if they
seem to be acting up.

I have been happy with the powerex/maha batteries, but have found that
the regular (non-Imedion) ones self discharge quite rapidly.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Internal NiMH Power Supply Voltage after Charge

2013-04-14 Thread Fred Smith
Steve

I have several sets of batteries for my KX3 and I have 2 sets like yours. I
have found from experience the first time they (or any) need to be
conditioned in an outboard charger/conditioner it takes a full 14 hrs. to
cycle the charge discharge.

Then they go into my KX3 full power and the charger takes care of them just
fine on a 12 hr. charge most of the time. After 10 charge/discharge cycles I
remove them from the radio and recondition them again so they can be brought
back up to where they can hold a full charge.

[Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Chris Kimball
I operate digital modes with the K2/KPA with a SignalLink computer interface.
The SignalLink drives the microphone input to the K2. The K2 has
compression turned off (1:1) and a mike gain of 3. The SignalLink computer
interface is at 100% gains on both sides and the SignalLink has the default
internal gain jumpers.

I get occasional comments that I'm splattering, a very serious concern.
Unfortunately I lack instrumentation to study the problem.

How should I set the audio (SignalLink) drive gain and the RF (K2 Power)
drive? My normal operation is not smoke-producing, so this is not a
duty-cycle question.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [Elecraft] Felt washer source?

I think all of those battery washers are heavily chemically treated and
I don't think I'd want one anywhere near my rig.

Home Depot carries a wide assortment of felt circles for use under table
legs or as bumpers for cabinet doors, etc. They have adhesive on one
side (which could face the knob), but if you don't like that the felt is
thick enough that you can actually shave off the adhesive with a sharp
razor.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread EricJ
Can't help you with the specific problem as I use a RigBlaster instead
of the SignaLink. But a means to monitor your signal quality is pretty
basic and the solution is simple.

I have both the PSKMeter (~$45 kit) and the KK7UQ IMD Meter (~$150
assembled). Both do a great job. Both can be online at all times to
monitor PSK31 and PSK63. I find that IMD levels change using the K2
depending on band to some extent and things get bumped, so I don't like
to just set-and-forget. Both meters agree fairly closely when I've used
them simultaneously.

The PSKMeter requires inserting a BNC T-connector at the output of the
K2. This is used to couple a sample of the outgoing rf signal to the
meter. The meter connects to a serial port on your computer for display
of results.

http://www.ssiserver.com/info/pskmeter/

The IMD Meter is self sufficient. No connections to the rig or computer;
a small antenna picks up your transmitted signal. Results read out on a
small LED display. It doubles as a field strength meter. With no
connections, it's always ready for whichever rig I fire up (K2, PSK-20,
Softrock Xcvr)

http://kk7uq.com/html/imdmeter.html

There are probably other easy ways available, but I think it should be
basic equipment in a PSK shack.

Chris, what mode are you trying and what do you have your power set to?
Also if your RX and TX on the Signalink are maxed, use the Signalink
internal jumper to boast the gain so you can turn them down. Also check the
computer volume both sound and microphone recording. And make sure the
computer is recognising the Signalink as a USB audio codec .

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Chris,

For data modes with the K2, there is an indication in the K2 itself that
should prevent splattering. That is the ALC meter.
Turn the RF/ALC meter to read ALC, then adjust your audio level until
you see the LED display blinking the 10th bar of the LED indicator -
then back off the gain a bit until that 10th LED flickering goes away.
At that point, your audio level is correct.

Now adjust the power knob to your desired power output level and operate.

I do suggest that you set up the RTTY filter set and use those filters
for data modes because the SSBC menu item is independent of the SSB
setting. Set SSBCr to 1:1 (the SSBC parameter for SSB can be set to
anything desired for voice). That will assure that you have compression
turned off for data modes.

The post is here:
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3SVGA-data-RTTY-FSK-D-tp7560370p7560415.html

Here is the crux of it:
I have divided the 50 Text message capability into 4 groups CW (12) PSK31(12)
RTTY (12) and an auxiliary group of 12. They are accessed as F1 thru F12 (CW),
SHIFT F1 thru SHIFT F12 (PSK31), ALT F1 thru ALT F12 (RTTY), and the
aux group, CTRL F1 thru CTRL F12. Each function key carries basically the
same message, just personalized for the particular mode, so other than
remembering the correct pre-key, F! is always CQ. etc. For the contest I used
the aux group, ALT Function Keyes personalized for the Grid Dip.

I'm also interested in other's creative uses for keyboard macros for the
P3SVGA. For instance, I read somewhere that when Elecraft was demoing the
P3SVGA at a tradeshow, they had the up and down arrow keys controlling
frequency in ten Hertz steps.

I'm using Olivia/Contestia most of the time rather than MPSK. The possible

Aside from the transmit gains, the system is operating normally, and the

I don't always get comments about splattering, by the way. My fear is that

Chris,

With your soundcard gains at maximum, it is possible that the output is
being overdriven and causing distortion (they are not out of the
picture at all.
I suggest you reduce the soundcard gain to the range of 1/2 to 2/3 of
full which will allow more range on the SignaLink gain.

Re: [Elecraft] Mobile Experiences

2013-04-14 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Tom,

You might want to take a look at the KX3 Mobile User Guide, posted on
Elecraft's web site:
http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#kx3_mobile

I'm also a MARS op, and have used the KX3 mobile for MARS ops. The
only issue I've found is making sure that the antenna is resonant.
Standard-cut ham band resonators need mods sometimes, but if you're
working with one of the screwdriver types of mobile antennas this is
not a problem.

With the shorter length antennas (Hustler in my case), the 100W amp
is borderline mandatory, though I have worked a number of nets and
events from the mobile without the amp: SSB, MT63, Thor, etc.

Note also that I'm updating the Mobile User Guide. There will be some
major structural and content refinements on the next go-around. Since
I've decided to redo my mobile, I'll be document that development as
it moves along.

If you're interested, I accept docs for inclusion in the mobile guide
and give credits. So far no one's taken me up on this. :)

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Internal NiMH Power Supply Voltage after Charge

2013-04-14 Thread Bill Frantz
I have always heard that the rule of thumb for charging a
depleted NiCd of NiMh battery is to charge it to 140% of its
rated capacity. If you are charging 2700 mAHr cells at 200 mA,
then you will need to charge them for 18.9 hours.

YES! Several times I've published a simple procedure for setting
computer sound card levels. It goes like this.

1) Find cliip level on the sound card. To do this, feed the sound card
output to a scope, get your RTTY or PSK program going, and push the
buttons that cause it to send tones to the radio. On the scope,
gradually increase the sound card output slider until you see squaring
at the top and bottom of the sine wave.

If you don't have a scope handy, listen on headphones as you gradually
increase the level until you hear the tones get raspy or harsh or
brighter. With an AC voltmeter, look for the point when the reading no
longer increases as you increase the slider. Of these three methods,
the scope is best, your ears and headphones are second best. Use the
voltmeter method only if your hearing is gone and you don't have a scope.

2) Now that you've established clip level, back off the slider by 6
-10 dB. 6 dB is half the voltage, 10 dB is about one-third the voltage,
easy to see on a scope or voltmeter. If you're using your ears, back off
the slider until it SOUNDS half as loud. This works because human
hearing is logarithmic, and a reduction in level is HEARD as half as
loud. The reason we go 6-10 dB below clip is that distortion in cheap
audio stages starts rising in the range of 6 dB below clip, so we make
our signals cleaner if we back it off by that 6-10 dB. .

This procedure works for ALL audio output stages and all radios, and is
not limited to Signal Link (which, by the way, is not that great a sound
card).

This procedure sets the level for the computer output. You still need to
follow instructions in the K3 (or KX3) manual to set levels in the radio
itself.

I have been controlling a K3 with a KX3 using a RRC-1258-link.
At that point (Jan 2013) the implementation was not complete.

I have been updating Elecraft (Wahne) on the additional commands needed to
have a decent setup. Have not hear anything yet on the updates and whether
teh current FW 1.41 includes teh updates.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Yes, the K2 transmit gain can change with the various bands. There is
some level of TX RF gain compensation in the K2 circuits, but it is not
perfect.

Because of the way the K2 controls power, setting the power first and
then bringing up the audio to produce that power output is a bit
iffy. Adjusting the audio for no ALC indication as I stated earlier
and then adjusting the power knob will always work.

Explanation -- The K2 tries to adjust the power output to produce the
requested power in all cases. If the audio input is too low, the K2
measures the RF power output, then compares it to the requested power -
the MCU will increase the power in an attempt to bring up the output
power - your audio will still be low at that point, the K2 will increase
the drive, and then when you subsequently increase the audio level, the
power will overshoot the requested power, and then has to do the process
over again to bring the power down. The result is that there are often
complaints about power creep when using digital modes.

For best results, adjust the audio level first for full audio but no
ALC, then adjust the power knob.

interface is at 100% gains on both sides and the SignalLink has the default
internal gain jumpers.

I get occasional comments that I'm splattering, a very serious concern.
Unfortunately I lack instrumentation to study the problem.

You have to adjust the gain as you change bands. Unfortunately the K2 gain
profile varies wildly from band to band. Either adjust until you just barely
get any ALC indication, or adjust until you just barely get the requested power
out.

How should I set the audio (SignalLink) drive gain and the RF (K2 Power)
drive? My normal operation is not smoke-producing, so this is not a
duty-cycle question.

Set the K2 power level at whatever power you desire. Then increase the audio
level until you just barely make that power level. You should be pretty close
to just barely having ALC action.

When you change bands, do it again.

[Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Rick Bates
Another minor issue is that the audio drive will vary somewhat depending on
which audio frequency is selected. i.e. 600 hertz vs 1800 Hz. will not exhibit
the same energy to the radio. Soundcards are not flat, many rigs are not
either.

So if you set levels for one (if RTTY, pair of) frequency, you can over/under
drive the rig. Under is better than over, at least you don't produce the
dreaded IMD complaints but you may miss the contact too.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Chris Kimball

I've been playing with this for the the last few hours.

It's possible to reduce the input level to get the 10-th ALC bar to
disappear and, apparently, provide too little signal to the RF amp. It
seems a little sensitive on the SignalLink Tx gain control.

Given that I'm at the low end of the gain for a single ALC bar indication,
am I likely to be overloading? In other words, is a single ALC bar
acceptable if it's at the low end of the Tx gain setting?

I am going to 50% gain on both sound card levels.

Acutally NiMH cells have a Coulometric Efficiency of 66%, which means you
need put 1/0.66 = 1.51 (or 151%) of the charge back into the
battery.(assuming it is fully discharged).

If your target cell were 2700 mAH, and it was dead, then you need to put
2700/0.66 = 4090 mAH. At 200 mA per hour, that would take about 21 hours.

had to increase the Transfer gain to -30.0!

This seems excessive. Would appreciate some guidance on how to resolve

I simply raided my XYLs sewing supplies  found some felt and a pair of
scissors   it wasn't perfect but did the job just fine  and since its hidden
behind the knob who cares that I cant cut a perfect circle.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 + SignalLink: Setting gains for digital modes

2013-04-14 Thread Gerald Manthey
Chris.
I have my TX and RX set at 9 o'clock each rig is different I set to low
power and get my signal looking good and then increase my power on the K2
to my 25 watts desired power. On my radio anything over 25 in digital mode
causes distortion. Works fine on CW and SSB. But other digital modes it
like 25 watts and I get no side bars. My K2 barely gets the led flickering.
But have made many contacts and received clean signal reports.

Given that I'm at the low end of the gain for a single ALC bar indication,
am I likely to be overloading? In other words, is a single ALC bar
acceptable if it's at the low end of the Tx gain setting?

I am going to 50% gain on both sound card levels.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 lvl cal?

2013-04-14 Thread Alan Bloom

Tom,

There are several reasons why the signal level can be different on the
P3 and K3, as explained in the How to Set Up and Interpret the P3
Display section of the P3 Owner's Manual. The main reason is that the
effective bandwidth of the P3 is narrower than the K3, so more of the
signal gets through to the K3 S meter than a single pixel on the P3
display. For that reason, the signal or noise level on the P3 can
appear quite a bit lower than on the K3 S meter.

Hi Alan,

I would guess that running Peak on the P3 and having the S meter on
the K3 set to PEAK ON should give roughly the same results. Correct?
Or does the same discrepancy you advised below exist? Peak and PEAK

Re: [Elecraft] P3 lvl cal?

2013-04-14 Thread Alan Bloom

Hi Matt,

If they matched it would be a coincidence. For example, if the P3 is
set to 45 kHz span, then each frequency point on the P3 display is about
100 Hz wide. If the K3 bandwidth is 2.7 kHz, then on a wideband signal
like band noise or SSB, 27 times (14 dB) as much signal is getting to
the K3's S meter as gets to each frequency point of the P3. So you'd
expect the average signal level on the P3 to be about 14 dB (2 or 3
S-units) lower.

To illustrate this without a P3, try this: Set the K3 to the normal 2.7
kHz bandwidth, tune in an SSB signal and note the S meter reading. Now
change the K3 bandwidth to 100 Hz and note the S meter reading. It will
be much lower.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3SVGA] Missing Fn key display on P3 after installing P3SVGA

2013-04-14 Thread Rick Prather
Bob,

While I have a few keyboard macros pre-programmed I haven't been near as
diligent as you have. Now you have me motivated to basically copy your
approach and also to set up several K3 Macros.

The question comes to me though about the possible volatility of these macros.

I wonder if the software guru's have considered or are working on a way to save
the keyboard load to a thumb drive the way we can currently save an image?

Seems like that would be a great option if possible.

Here is the crux of it:
I have divided the 50 Text message capability into 4 groups CW (12)
PSK31(12) RTTY (12) and an auxiliary group of 12. They are accessed as F1
 thru F12 (CW), SHIFT F1 thru SHIFT F12 (PSK31), ALT F1 thru ALT F12
(RTTY), and the aux group, CTRL F1 thru CTRL F12. Each function key
carries basically the same message, just personalized for the particular
mode, so other than remembering the correct pre-key, F! is always CQ. etc.
For the contest I used the aux group, ALT Function Keyes personalized for
 the Grid Dip.

I'm also interested in other's creative uses for keyboard macros for the
P3SVGA. For instance, I read somewhere that when Elecraft was demoing the
P3SVGA at a tradeshow, they had the up and down arrow keys controlling
 frequency in ten Hertz steps.

[Elecraft] New K2: Order of Construction

2013-04-14 Thread w1kbx
I built a K2 around 13 years ago, which I sold, and now I'm building a second
one. The first one, I put too many options in and the complexity overwhelmed me.

With this one I have kept it simple and only have the KAT2, K160RX and
KBT2options.

I am thinking that I should construct the options first (KAT2, K160RX and KBT2)
and then construct the K2 main kit and then install the options during the
regular K2 Construction rather than retrofitting the options after K2 building.

Is this the simplest and recommended way to incorporate the options during
build of a new K2.

Re: [Elecraft] New K2: Order of Construction

2013-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
I would suggest you build the K2 first so you can test the options as
you build them.
The K2 manual indicates when you can install the headers and changes to
the K2 in the latter parts of the assembly process.

If you build the options first and install them as you go with the
base K2 build, should a problem occur, you will not know whether it is a
problem with the option or the base K2.

Re: [Elecraft] New K2: Order of Construction

2013-04-14 Thread Jim Wiley

Dan -

Just keep in mind that you will not be able to properly test the
optional units until the base K2has been built and tested. Other than
that, it probably does not make much difference what order you choose
for construction. My personal K2, completed several years ago now, has
all the options and upgrades except for the 60-meter unit and the
external VHF / UHF transverters, and I did not feel it was
overwhelming in any way. I just took it slow, spending perhaps 40
hours on the basic K2, and another 50 hours or so on all the options,
including adding the KPA100 and KAT100 in a separate EC2 cabinet. My
self-imposed time limit for a building session was set to 2 hours
maximum, and no more than 2 sessions in any given day. Made each
session both enjoyable and something to look forward to.
