Hi David,

Yes it does. There are 4 memories playable from the front panel
and there is another selectable bank of four. They are programmable using the
internal keyer or the utility program.

The way the second part of the question is phrased it looks as if you are
asking if there is a memory that increments a counter per QSO, i.e. 599 001,
599 002, and so on. the K3 has indeed CW memories as others have said, but
they are static so the contents doesn't increment, at least not as far as I
know.

Re: [Elecraft] RF into K3 via serial port?

2014-04-07 Thread Kjeld Holm
Dear Bill,

I too have had (have) something of the same problem.

For a long time I could transmit 20 W only on digital modes on 80 meters. If
transmitting more power the K3 would lock in transmit mode and I would have
to turn it off to stop it transmitting.

Now I have bought a pair of Line In Line Out cables with very good
shielding. I can now transmit at least 250 W without locking the K3 in
transmit mode.

My next problem is that when using Ham Radio deluxe (HRD) to control the K3
the HRD locks up so I have to close the program and start again if I want
to do any changes in frequency, power or whatever. Other programs running on
the computer at the same time do not lock up. So my guess is that it is my
COM port that locks up. I may try using some better shielded cable for the
COM port. I haven't had the time yet.

Best regards

OZ1CCM Kjeld

Subject: [Elecraft] RF into K3 via serial port?

In my transition to Win7, I added a 2 port serial PCI card (NewEgg
purchase -- Sunix 5037A) to my Dell PC. I was going to use one of these 2
ports to communicate with my K3 Utility terminal program. Very handy CW /
RTTY application. Shortly after installation I made a nice contact on 30m
RTTY and then moved to 80m RTTY. SURPRISE!! During TX the K3 hung in TX and
only a couple of characters (if that) were ever transmitted. I was
attempting to run about 70watts or so. Only by reducing power to a few watts
would the RTTY transmission seemingly be successful.

The 80m antenna is resonate and very low SWR even without the KXPA100
tuner. (My K3/10 is for VHF/UHF/Microwave IF use mostly, hence the external
PA/Tuner).

So RF is getting back into the K3 .. odd ... nothing is hot in the shack
at all. My workaround is to use the new serial ports for other
hardware/applications and use the one serial port in the Dell Dimension 4700
for the K3 / terminal program. Things are happy that way.

I may investigate and try a ferrite core on the serial cable. But I will
need to get an HF core since all of mine are for higher freq use. I just
thought this was really odd. My serial cable is homebrew minimum conductor
cable and I don't recall if it is shielded or not.

Anyone else had any similar experiences??

It would be easiest to use one's skill and send this using a paddle.
Ideally the signal strength should be derived from the receiver's

It should not be beyond the bounds of possibility these days,
electronically to compute Readability, Strength and Tone. Maybe the K4
will do this ;-)

[Elecraft] K3 commander issue

2014-04-07 Thread Jeff Griffin

I noticed that when I switch frequency from a USB to an LSB one or visa
versa on my K3 by clicking on a spot, or a memory in memory bank 1, the K3
changes to the right mode for an instant then goes back to the mode it was
in. I tested this with my 7100 and Commander operates correctly. I just
moved my K3 to this location from my other home and there I never noticed
this problem. I also recently added an Elecraft KAT500 and KPA500 to the mix
and maybe this caused the issue? Anyway it has caused me to be in the wrong
mode on several occasions and would like to fix this. I tried to mess with
the command interval and scan dwell in the commander config to no avail.
Does anyone running the same setup have/had this problem? Anyone have a
clue? Need more info?

Re: [Elecraft] Anti Static Mats

2014-04-07 Thread Rich
If I got such an answer from a fire department, I would tell them that
the dead cat may well be hidden in the tree, and once dead would likely
attract nature's sanitation team and they would likely remove the dead
cat with at least as much efficiency as the fire department can muster.

If the cat is injured, it may need help that it can not provide for it's
self.

I'm not a cat lover, I just don't think this analogy is worth much.
(And, not trying to start a budget discussion--I would not call the fire
department, but a five-year old kid might).

A bad anti-static mat may relate more to the sick cat than the dead
cat. When you pull on the tail of the sick cat you may get a weak mew
that may eventually go silent, returning this thread back to radio
through reference to an old wireless metaphor.

I was once asked if the mats on my assembly line were antistatic. I thought
they were but I wasn’t sure since I didn’t buy them. The mats took a beating
and only lasted a year or two. Some were new and some were in tatters. I
flipped over a new mat. It clearly said antistatic but the older mats didn’t
have any labels and they looked different. I took an ohmmeter, stabbing the
probes in about an inch apart. No reading. No reading for the new mats or the
antistatic bags we used by the thousands. After rubbing with fur, a
triboelectric meter (a meter used for measuring static charge) was used on the
mats and bags without measuring a charge.

My conclusion was surfaces could be antistatic without measuring any
resistance. Same for bags. If you have one from your Elecraft kit, try
measuring it with an ohmmeter.

[Elecraft] Previous rig for sale here...

2014-04-07 Thread David Cole
Hello all,

Previously there was a K3 for sale here, and a question was brought up
as to the validity of the seller. This was the rig with the son selling
for his father. The son was out of the US when he posted the ad on
Craig's list, which is why it showed as not from the US. The father's
health is failing, and he is moving to be closer to his children.

As it turns out I know the Father, (we worked together in MARS for a
number of years), so I drove up to look at the rig, and to say hello to
an old friend whom I had lost contact with. The rig and owner live in
Salem Oregon, and I live in Eugene, Oregon, so the drive was only about
70 or so miles.

While the radio was not the one I wanted, the seller is real, and the
rig is in 7 or 8 out of 10 for physical condition, no visible scratches,
but the new look is gone. It seemed to work, I am very new at using a
K3, so all I can say is it powered up, it tuned a few stations, it
transmitted, and teh ATU looked like it was working.

It has the stock filters, no Sub RX, and the Panadapter's front panel is
in good shape, with the exception of one cross threaded screw on the
upper right top as you look at it from the front. It also has the ATU,
and the Voice memory. He has the original receipt for it from Elecraft.
Beyond that I can not say anything more about working condition. YMMV

Given that you have all been so kind as to allow me to generate a large
number of posts/questions, and you have all answered every question I
have asked, I thought this would help to pay some of the kindness back
to the list by posting the results of my ventures looking at this
particular K3.

[Elecraft] K3 Wattmeter Cal and Tech Mode

2014-04-07 Thread Ed G
Folks,
While attempting to do a K3 wattmeter calibration, I go into the CONFIG
menu. However, I only see WMTR MW and I cannot select any other power
settings, such as LP or HP. I ten checked to make sure the TECH MODE is on.
Going to that entry, I see Funct ion which I assume is On. However, I
cannot get this entry to turn off; when I rotate the main knob the setting
does not alternate between on and off...it always stays on.

1. How do I get into the wattmeter settings if tech mode is already on?
2. and how do I turn tech mode off after I am done with wattmeter
calibration?

Thanks for any hints.

think if it could do 5w in JT65B mode, it should be able to drive my solid state amp
up enough to bring my 8877 up to 1500w output on EME. ;-) Provided it is very
stable

Yours is a frequent inquiry, but you should know that there was a redesign of the
the module's board to address an issue that showed up in field testing. At the
moment, the replacement version is in field testing, so the expectation is that all
is now OK, and that there should be an announcement very soon. If I were a betting
man, I'd wager that Elecraft would want to be taking orders at Dayton.

Granted, it does seem like it's taking forever to get this item to delivery status,
but Elecraft has been rigorous about making sure that their shipping products are
as good as they can be. This item is all hardware, so it really needs to be just
right when it ships. With the KX3 itself, there are fixes and additions that can
be part of a firmware revision, but that's not true here.

I'm still on the fence about the 2M module. I'm sure it will be good, but at this
point, I have not been doing any 2M operating, except for using my HT with a local
club net. And, I don't need the module for that. I also have an FT-817 which
works nicely on 2M SSB.. so there is very little pressure for me to consider the
module. But then... who knows? :)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wattmeter Cal and Tech Mode

2014-04-07 Thread Ken K3IU
If memory serves me, you need to have the K3 in the range
before the CONFIG:WMTR will indicate that range, e.g., if
you have it set for 5 watts, it will show LP; if you have
set 12 watts, it will say HP.

Folks,
While attempting to do a K3 wattmeter calibration, I go into the CONFIG

settings, such as LP or HP.

Craig's list, which is why it showed as not from the US. The father's

As it turns out I know the Father, (we worked together in MARS for a

  70 or so miles.

While the radio was not the one I wanted, the seller is real, and the

but the new look is gone.

YMMV

2014-04-07 Thread Ray Sills

Hi Dave:

It was nice to view that photo, but it appears to be almost a year
old, which suggests to me that it is one of the prototype units, which
has been superseded by a board revision, following the original field
testing. Nevertheless, I'm sure that the current version in testing
is quite similar. After all, the physical constraints for making the
module fit inside the case have not changed.

Re: [Elecraft] Quick Question

2014-04-07 Thread Fred Jensen

On 4/6/2014 9:16 PM, David Cole wrote:

Does the K3 have a CW keyer memory? IE., can I program up a CQ TEST, in
one memory, then the 599 00X in the other?

The K3 has two banks of 4 CW message memories each. They are selectable
with the M1-M4 buttons on the front panel. Each will store 250 CW
characters. Touching the paddle will kill a message immediately. You
can set a memory to repeat [like for a CQ], sending anything with the
paddle kills the repeat. The memories are static, you can't
auto-increment a serial number, however you can program the exchange up
to the serial number in one memory, then send the number manually, and
the rest of the exchange from another memory. To the best of my
knowledge, there is no control character you can put in your message to
pause the message so you can insert the number and then continue.

On voice modes and if you have the KDVR3 module, they will store short
messages which you can record directly from your normal mic. People
have told me that they can't tell if it's a canned message or me. :-)

With the DVR option, you can also record and play back from the
receiver. It's a 90 sec loop. I've never used it.

I use N1MM and in SSB contests, I put K3 CAT commands in the N1MM macros
that emulate tapping M1-M4. Except for ARRL SS SSB, I usually just use
it for CQ. For SS, the exchange is fairly long so I have my precedence,
call, check, and section in a memory, I give his call and my s/n and
then hit Enter and the radio gives the rest of the exchange.

I don't use the K3 memories in CW contests, N1MM keys the radio with a
WinKeyUSB. If I'm chasing a DX station [CW or SSB], I put my call in M1
so all I have to do is tape M1 to call.

You can also assign any of the Mx keys to K3 macros in addition to PF1
and PF2, but doing so means you can't also use them as message memories.

Use K3. It will work in any area that you need. However, I find that
LP-Bridge works better on my system. I've had too many lost connections

Hi Lance,

I'm not sure where you got that figure. Our postings on this topic are
summarized in an FAQ (http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3-2M%20FAQ.htm).

- Max power is 3 W.

- The module is unlikely to support very narrowband modes, because short-term
local oscillator excursions at the I.F. (48 MHz) are, in effect, multiplied by
about 3. FM and AM modes can be used with normal factory temperature
compensation on 2 m. To use CW/SSB, the extended VFO temperature compensation
procedure will be required. This level of compensation would also allow the use
of narrow-shift RTTY. But JT65 and similar modes on 2 meters would probably
require tighter frequency stability.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 problems after lightning

2014-04-07 Thread Edward R Cole
I just wanted to offer a few general suggestions. Do follow Don's
expert instructions.

A lesson taught me by a fellow bench tech who did not have a lot of
tech training was to initially open the unit and carefully look over
the circuit board for obvious burnt items! Use your nose for burnt
smell. Touch to find Hot components (carefully). Look for black
marks indicating arcing. I can't tell you how well that worked for him!

An approach I used when I had a dead short on the dc power, which
could be anywhere on the board that the power trace went,
was: divide and conquer, meaning try to isolate sections and
troubleshoot each by itself. This might require cutting the power
trace in certain areas (in your case, follow Don's approach as he
knows these radios intimately...he will tell you if that becomes necessary).

My first step after the look-sniff-touch method is check basic
performance (radio lamps light-up, makes noise in Rx, keys in
transmit, shows output power, etc.) Those symptoms help narrow down
what to check. Then get out the multimeter and make resistance and
voltage checks. Of course this assumes you have a schematic diagram
and have the background knowledge to understand it. If the unit is
not stable when you apply power then you will have to start out with
resistance checks and/or isolation methods.

The lightening hit is probably one of the worst as it may have gone
anywhere in the unit. Hope you are successful in fixing it.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2M module?

2014-04-07 Thread Dave
I'm hoping to use it with a 24GHz transverter, so I guess I'll be embarking
on the extended VFO temperature compensation procedure at sometime after
deciding on whether to purhase the KX3-2M unit.

However, the more I hear and read about the KX3-2M, the more I'm thinking
that it's not going to be good enough. I enjoy using CW on 2M and most of
the contacts on 24GHz will probably be CW as well, but my transverter is not
GPS locked, so the combination may not work too well.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2M module?

Lance,

Wayne recently commented that they had some re-design after the first
field test round, and were soon to go out with the second field
test. I wrote Wayne directly for more info, but have not heard back,
as yet...I signed-up to be a field tester so am hoping that I may
have one to test when that happens.

I will be testing it and the KX3 especially looking at use for eme
and 2m weak-signal operation. I am lucky to have a couple RFC 2-23
linear amps (2w input/30w out) which will match up with low power
level of the 2M module. That will drive another RFC linear
(30w/170w) easily to 55w to drive my 8877. I presently use the
latter amp so my DEMI transverter can loaf a bit when running JT65 with the K3.

I have the test equipment to measure power and frequency to determine
performance. As in the past I will create a webpage to document what
I find. I have not built a computer I/F for the KX3 so I will just
simulate JT65 transmit by keydown CW. I ran a freq. drift test on my
current line-up by running JT65 for 30-minutes and noting frequency
drift. Its documented:

[Elecraft] KX1 Hiss -- question.

Yes.. I know this is not K3/KX3 related but I still use my KX1. Love it !.
But I don't like the audio hiss when using the wider filter bandwidth.

I did some reading of the LM386 data sheet..

Question: If I change C22 from a 0.01 to a 0.02, will that decrease
the upper end of the LM386 filtering?

Alternatively; Has anyone done any mode to improve this?

So short chassis-to-chassis bonding combined with a bond from
one of those chassis to the common point is the safest from a lightning
safety point of view, because it
 minimizes the loop area.

You've got a good point, Jim. However, I would prefer a combination of
both methods. I'd run a (good low reactance) buss, AND another to the
grounding point from each buss attachment point on each unit. Your
point about all of the ins and outs on this stuff leaves plenty of room
for loops. Also, any time storms approach, I pull the USB ports. They
seem to be sensitive to such damage.

Re: [Elecraft] VK9MT transmit audio distortion.

2014-04-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Also, any time storms approach, I pull the USB ports. They
seem to be sensitive to such damage.

They would not be if you include the computer in the short, fat
ground bus. The problem is that many computers do not provide
a reasonable ground connection ... the only ground is via the
power supply return to the third wire of the power cord (if it
even exists). Many amateurs do not properly bond their tower and
RF ground to the power line entry ground (as required by NEC)
which allows the computer and rig to float separately in event
of a storm.

All it takes is for the rig/interface to go more that 7 or 8 volts
more positive than the computer or more than about 0.5V more negative
than the computer and the USB interface is over or reverse voltage
and poof goes the USB port. Better devices now contain external
protectors - diodes that clamp the power supply and data lines
relative to circuit common but they still have limited capacity in
event of a strong, nearby lightning strike.

While the USB or serial port (particularly low power serial ports
designed with 3.3 or 5V logic) may be especially sensitive to the
separate ground issue, failing to bond the tower/RF ground to the
power line entrance is a significant issue of safety for your house
and *all* devices connected to the power distribution system. With
separate grounds, a direct strike can force several *thousand* amps
between the two grounds via the safety ground (third wire)
connection. The result can be massive damage to appliances and even
serious house fire.

[Elecraft] The Final Build and order for K3

2014-04-07 Thread David Cole
Hello all,

Many thanks to all that answered my many questions, and gave a new
person a hand in understanding a new rig.

I have decided to order a new rig based on what was said here, about a
30 minute conversations with a fellow named Dave at Elecraft, and that
eham gives it a 4.9 rating, which is hard to get there... I tend to
take eham reviews with a grain of salt, but darned few radios get 4.9
there.

If I missed sending anyone a thank you note, please forgive me, the
number of answers I got was phenomenal, and I think I got everyone, but
is would have been easy to miss someone. So thanks to all for your help
in this. It made spending 5K almost fun... Almost... :)

Here is the final build as I will order it as soon as Dave from Elecraft
returns my MARS modification call. I don't know if he gets commission,
but I want to be sure to order through the fellow that helped me there
at Elecraft.

Final Build:

Radio:
K3/100-FK3 basic radio 100W version
KAT3-F K3 ATU unit
KBPF3 K3 General coverage RX module for main radio
KRX3-F K3 second rx
KBPF3 K3 General coverage RX module for sub radio.
I am a MARS member, and want General coverage on both
KDVR3 Voice memory unit

Filters:
KFL3A-400 One for each radio, main and sub
KFL3B-FMFM Filter for main radio
FILTER Stock 2.7 KHz for both radios, main and sub

Misc:
P3-FPanadapter
KXV3A K3 RX Ant, IF Out Xvertr Interface
KUSBFactory USB cable.

Why two KBPF3's:
Someone had mentioned that I probably did not need the second KBPF3, and
for the most part that person was correct, but for my MARS operations...
I do some very odd splits sometimes, sometimes neither side being in the
ham bands, so the second RX was needed.

Filters:
During these entire process I had to tell myself these are roofing
filters-- remember, these are roofing filters-- these are not bandpass
filters these are not band pass filters... Remember...

Many people pointed that out to me, and for that I am thankful, you all
saved me a few bucks...

I spoke to Dave at Elecraft, and he indicated that adding filters later
should not pose a major issue for me, based on my experience. That
said, I can order filters later, and probably will, as I need them, or
discover I wish I had ordered them to start with. Remember, these are
roofing filters...

I ordered the FM Filter as opposed to the AM filter, because it is a
roofing filter, and several folks suggested it as it lets me do AM and
FM, as opposed to if I ordered just the AM filter. I would then need
the FM filter later, if I did FM. This allows both modes with one
filter.

USB Cable:
I ordered the cable from Elecraft because I trust they have done testing
and clearance of this cable, and that it will work. I am running Linux
as my major OS, and I can not say enough to thank the folks at Elecraft
for including the utility program for Linux users...

Panadapter :
I can't imagine a radio without an Panadapter anymore... The thought is
abhorrent to me.

Again, many thanks to all for your help in this!! I would feel as
confident I ordered correctly if it had not been for this mail list, and
the kind users on it.

If memory serves me, you need to have the K3 in the range before the
CONFIG:WMTR will indicate that range, e.g., if you have it set for 5 watts,
it will show LP; if you have set 12 watts, it will say HP.

Re: [Elecraft] The Final Build and order for K3

2014-04-07 Thread George Thornton
I would have only one word of caution with respect to filters.

Replacing filters with a single receiver unit is fairly easy. However, the
process is more tricky when you have a sub receiver involved.

I personally found the sub receiver unit very tricky to install. The
clearances are tight and it was very hard for me to see if things were aligned
correctly. There are also a lot of tricky cable connections.Although I
have built several Elecraft kits I still don't feel comfortable removing or
installing the sub receiver unit.

To change any filters you have to pull the sub Rx unit.

[Elecraft] P3/K3 spurry

2014-04-07 Thread stephen pearce
Hi

My P3/K3 combination (with pa and atu) seems to have developed a big spurry
on the spectral display of the P3 which sits around
the mid point of the display (the tuned frequency) .. it is initially (on
turn on) worse and gradually subsides as things warm up (I presume)
though never goes away entirely. It didn't used to be there .. and I wonder
if it has been observed and trouble shotted in another system.
It doesn't seem to produce any noticable interference on the audio but it
does make it difficult to id signal on the spectral display.

receiver is also MAIN).  I set both VFO A B LINKed.  It appears that I could
copy the signal more easier from my ears.  Of course, sometimes, I had to
balance the audio from the two receivers.  Overall, the listening comfort is
better than just using one receiver.

Did any of you try this?  Do you also feel signal copying is easier?  Any
experience?

[Elecraft] Line Out Jack

2014-04-07 Thread pastormg2
Hi,
This is Mark Griffin, KB3Z. Does anyone know the size phono plug that I would
need for the Line Out Jack in the back of the K3? I think it is 1/8 but I am
not sure. Thanks for your help! Mark

I think mine are 3.5 mm, I don't have a metric stick handy right now,
they work fine. If it becomes a big issue, I'll get the micrometer out
tomorrow.

Re: [Elecraft] Line Out Jack

2014-04-07 Thread Brian Hunt
There was a long thread on this recently. Essentially modern 3.5 mm plugs and
1/8 inch plugs are the same thing. Neither are exactly the dimensions given but
both will work in the intended jack.

The K3 manual (p 8) lists 1/8 inch for the rear jacks. Note: All plugs should
be stereo type.

Re: [Elecraft] Line Out Jack

2014-04-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
3.5mm and 1/8 inch are now the same thing - one place calls them 3.5mm
while others use the 1/8 inch designation for the same thing.

Yes, it was not always so, but that was well before stereo plugs and
jacks came into existence.
The big issue now is manufacturing tolerances that might mean some jack
and plug combinations are tight while other combinations may appear to
be sloppy.

1/4 inch plugs and jacks are more tolerant of sloppy tolerances i.e +/-
0.01 mm compared to 3.5mm is much greater than +/- 0.01 mm compared to 7
mm (or is it 8mm?).

That would mean the part was charged. How would that happen?

Re: [Elecraft] Anti Static Mats

2014-04-07 Thread Alan Bloom
The human body can store quite a bit of charge. When you lay a part on
a conductive surface, charge flows between your body and the surface,
through the part.

That's why (if you don't have an anti-static mat and wrist strap) you
should always touch the chassis, PC board, whatever with your other hand
before placing a part on it.

Re: [Elecraft] Anti Static Mats

2014-04-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
When one touches it, a charge is developed - then when it comes in
contact with a fully conducting surface, damage can occur. If instead
you are working on a proper anti-static mat, the charge from your body
and the part is dissipated slowly, no damage will be done and everything
will be at the same potential.
