Re: [Elecraft] [K3] High SWR when running above 12w on 160,80m

2019-03-03 Thread Ilya
Thanks Bob!

The coax jumper is not the root cause - I tried connecting the transceiver
directly to amp/antenna (via both ant1/ant2 sockets) and still got the same
swr showings.

First of all I thought of some amplifier issue as it all starts at power
setting at exactly 12.0w (the level when the 100w amp gets enabled, if I'm
not mistaken). When the power is set to 11.9w (highest setting without 100w
amp) - the swr meter shows 1.0.

Will look closer at BPFs, thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] High SWR when running above 12w on 160,80m

2019-03-03 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
A bad coax jumper or a loose coax connector can cause problems like this,
especially if it is in between the radio and the external SWR meter. Can
you try a different coax jumper? Or, can you bypass the external SWR meter
and connect the antenna directly to the K3, perhaps ANT 2 instead of ANT
1? If no difference, I suppose something could be wrong with the low pass
filters inside the K3, but check the coax first.

[Elecraft] SWR meter with KX3 2 Meter module

2019-03-03 Thread Steve Zabarnick
Is the SWR meter supposed to work when the 2 meter module is being used in
the KX3? I don't see much of a response even with no antenna connected,
which should show a very high SWR.

My last post mistakenly asked about the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] DVR audio

2019-03-03 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Check CONFIG:TX MON, to see if it is set to NOR or FAST (FAST should have
no "distortion", because you hear unprocessed MIC audio, with no delay).
This applies to both your own MIC audio and KDVR3 recordings.

Check also CONFIG:TX DVR. Is it set to NOR or IND? If IND, there are two
different monitor levels, one monitor level for your own voice spoken live
into the MIC, and a second level that adjusts the DVR message monitor level
(Voice Memories). Perhaps the latter is set too high?

With CONFIG:TX DVR set to IND, You have to hold down the MON knob a second
time to alternate between adjusting DVR MON level and the MIC MON level.

If that's not it, check if adjusting the CMP level during playback makes
any difference. Is it also possible that RF is getting into your
headphones? Does it go away when you use a dummy load?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2019-03-03 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Twenty meters was weak with a medium level of noise on my end. Out
East they were getting hammered by it.  Forty meters had less noise
(again from my point of view) but it made up for it with slow and deep
QSB.  I gave more than one S0 to S9 report and a few of S2 to S7.
Luckily it was not fast so I could copy everything. Winter hasn't let go
yet, the Iditarod has just begun.

  On 14050.5 kHz 2200z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K6XK - Roy - IA

W5LA - Floyd - TX

  On 7046.5 kHz at z:

KG7V - Marv - WA

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

W6JHB - Jim - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

K6XK - Roy - IA

K4TO - Dave - KY

W0CZ - Ken - ND

Roy reminded me of the time change next week.  Now to figure out the
best time to hold each net with the current propagation. According to
spaceweather. com we'll be in and out of solar wind stream until
Wednesday.  That was causing our noise today while it was (hopefully)
recharging the ionosphere.  It may take a few weeks to find the best new
times but I will keep trying.

   Until next week 73,

The festival was over and the boys were all planning for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drilling in the wall
The curfew had been lifted and the gambling wheel shut down
Anyone with any sense had already left town
He was standing in the doorway looking like the Jack of Hearts.

The backstage manager was pacing all around by his chair
"There's something funny going on" he said " I can just feel it in the air"
He went to get the hanging judge but the hanging judge was drunk
As the leading actor hurried by in the costume of a monk
There was no actor anywhere better than the Jack of Hearts.

Two doors down the boys finally made it through the wall
And cleaned out the bank safe it's said that they got off with quite a haul
In the darkness by the riverbed they waited on the ground
For one more member who had business back in town
But they couldn't go no further without the Jack of Hearts.

[Elecraft] [K3] High SWR when running above 12w on 160,80m

2019-03-03 Thread Ilya
Hi Gentlemen!

Recently I got some strange behaviour in my K3/100 #4413, looking for any
ideas.

When running more than 12 watts on 3.5 and especially 1.8 mhz, the internal
meter shows higher SWR values. The higher the power is set - the higher the
showings are. Like when the power is 20w - it shows smth near 2.0, when the
power is set to 50w - it shows 3.0 and says 'HI SWR'. If I tune antenna
with ATU prior to transmitting - the values are lower, but overall
behaviour is reproduced. Everything looks fine on 40 meters and higher.

But:
1. External meter shows normal SWR like 1.2-1.5 (the real one - the same as
my antenna analyzer shows).
2. If power level is set lower than 11.9 watts - the problem does not
persist (internal meter shows 1 or 2 segments).

Given the description above - I guess something should be wrong in the 100w
amplifier?
Looking for any advice.

Thanks and 73!
Ilya, R3XA
