Re: [Elecraft] Connect KPA-500, TS-480 and MicroKeyer II

2019-03-06 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The KPA500 does NOT have a pass-through mode. It DOES have a serial port
dedicated to communicating with Kenwood radios to extract the operating
frequency. It can just monitor the serial link or it can also poll for the
needed data. You will need to provide a Y cable that connects the signal coming
from the radio to the computer, connecting the KPA’s XCVR port to the branch of
the cable. The PC port on the KPA500 is only for controlling the amplifier. The
two ports are not related in function.

Use the RS232 X menu setting to select the port data rate to match the radio’s
serial port. If you need for the KPA500 to poll the radio for the frequency,
the set SER POLL to ON.

For other cabling, connect the KEY line coming from the transceiver to one of
the KAT500’s PTT RlY connectors, then connect the other PTT RLY connector to
the KPA500’s PA KEY connector. These connections are shown on page 12 of the
KAT500 manual.

With this configuration the KAP500 will switch bands based on the data it
receives from the transceiver, while the KAT500 will need RF to select the LC
combination needed for tuning (as well as the desired antenna for that band).
The KPA500 and KAT500 do not communicate, so there is no way for the KPA500 to
tell the KAT500 the band.

Note also that the KPA500 and KAT500 will switch bands quite well without the
transceiver data connection as K9YC describes.

Andy, K3WYC has created a pretty cool system with a small controller that
monitors the system and sends control data to both the KAT500 and KPA500 to set
them upper operation. I’lllet Andy describe that.

I am amazed that we do not properly describe KPA500/KAT500 operation with
Kenwood transceivers. I will try to bug the right people to get this fixed.

Re: [Elecraft] Connect KPA-500, TS-480 and MicroKeyer II

2019-03-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Apparently the KPA-500 includes the ability to operate in a CAT
pass through mode (like the P3) with Elecraft and Kenwood rigs
(see Menu items RS232 P, RS232 X, RADIO, and SER POLL).

*UNFORTUNATELY* the Kenwood configuration is not documented in the
KPA-500 Owners Manual (unlike the Icom "band voltage" and Yaesu BCD
control configurations).

It would greatly assist non-Elecraft owners if the KPA-500 Owners
Manual included explicit diagrams and configuration settings for
Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood (RS-232 CAT ONLY) transceivers along the
lines of Figure 4 on page 13 for the K3 using "KPAK3AUX Cable and
Separate Key Line".

Without documentation (including information showing if RTS/CTS is
passed through from the transceiver as expected by Kenwood rigs
or whether the KPA-500 provides a CTS "pull up" on the RS-232 (XCVR)
jack) from Elecraft or access to a KPA-500 for "hands on engineering"
it is not possible for third party suppliers to provide any support
for (Kenwood) configurations that include KPA-500/KAT500 .

[Elecraft] K3S Problem - Frequency Jump

2019-03-06 Thread John Stengrevics
I have been using my K3S on WSJT-X without any problems. Today, the frequency
appears to have shifted .7 KHz low. That is, if I were on 50.313 MHz FT8, I
now have to tune to 50.3137 to decode signals.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Steve,

The range of the T1 and the internal KX3 are about the same.

PS - why do folks insist on putting hyphens in the Elecraft model
numbers - they do not belong, it is KX3 and not KX-3.

Look at the sales brochure or the webpage.

Yes, we are. Booze and wine are now sold by the liter. Curiously beer is

liters instead of gallons. To the uneducated the price per liter would look
like a bargain. Wow, less than a dollar! I don't think super markets would
encounter a huge cost converting from lbs to kilos either. Probably the road

The KPA500 and KAT500 both detect transmitting frequency with as little
as a tap on the mic or a dit at 35 wpm, and switch almost
instantaneously. All they need is PTT (Amp Key) from the rig to an RCA
jack that loops through the KPA500 to the KAT500 with an RCA-RCA jumper.
That "loop-through" allows the KPA500 to prevent auto-tuning while the

Re: [Elecraft] Need help in communicating with W2 from Win 10

2019-03-06 Thread Michael Walker
I use the W2 on 2 Win 10 computers without issue.

Ghosted Com ports can't be seen unless you do the following:

1.) Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then
click *Command Prompt*.

2.) At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER:
*set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1*

3.) Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
*start devmgmt.msc*

Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager.

4.) Click *Show hidden devices* on the View menu in Device Manager before
you can see all devices associated with the computer.

5.) Scroll down to the *Ports* section and you will be able to see all the
hidden and unused COM ports. The hidden com ports have a grayed out icon
next to them.

6.) To delete a particular port, click to highlight it and hit the *Delete* key
on your keyboard. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click *OK*.

7.) After you have deleted the unused and hidden COM ports, the list will
show only those COM ports you use or may use in the future. Be careful not
to delete com ports that are working properly.

8.) When you finish troubleshooting, close *Device Manager*.

9.)Type *exit* at the command prompt.

*Note that when you close the command prompt window, Window clears the
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable that you set in step 2 and
prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you click Show hidden
devices.*

Re: [Elecraft] Connect KPA-500, TS-480 and MicroKeyer II

2019-03-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

microKEYER II with the DB37-TS-MINI6 cable does digital modes just
fine with the TS-480 - it is designed to operate that way. I have
no information about adding the KPA500/KAT500 into the mix as I
do not know if/how the KPA500/KAT500 acquires frequency/band data
from the TS-480.

Note: microKEYER II *DOES NOT ALLOW* any device to interfere with
the RS-232 (CAT) connections between MK II and the TS-480.

The word "stereo" has a specific meaning -- an acoustic sound stage
being picked up by a spaced array of microphones and reproduced through
a spaced array of loudspeakers. The mass production of this concept has
been many mics mixed to two channels that are reproduced by two
loudspeakers, or headphones.

A correct description of what the K3, K3S, and KX3 do is "binaural," and
the plug is correctly described as a 3-circuit plug.

Re: [Elecraft] Left ear / right ear or stereo

2019-03-06 Thread Brendon Whateley
Yes, this is available in general aviation by audio panels like the Garman
350c which offers what they call 3D audio. That allows you to set up
different sources to appear to come from different locations or seats in
the cabin. PS Engineering offers something in the PDA 360EX called
IntelliAudio, which interestingly they license from the US Air Force, where
pilots apparently call it multi-talker.

This seems to be a relatively simple DSP process to recreate. It looks like
you take your various sound sources and process them through a head-related
transfer function based on the desired source location. The HRTF change the
sound fed to each ear based on time delay, frequency dependant shadowing
caused by the head, etc.

While I was looking into this beyond the aviation side, I found evidence
that the first recordings using the binaural technology took place in 1881!

It has also been in use in video games since the '90s. And there are a lot
of software products out there to create these effects for performances,
recordings, etc.

The best use cases are utilizing many different sources which get located
around the listener, whereas in HAM we have a single source, or at least
multiple sources which are coming through a small funnel. I can imagine you
could locate signals based on frequency from left to right. Or with 3+
receivers, you could locate signals by direction and distance. It sounds
like an interesting place to experiment.

[Elecraft] Need help in communicating with W2 from Win 10

2019-03-06 Thread Floyd Sense
Acquired a used W2 today and have the hardware hooked up and operating.
The W2 works just fine.  Now I'm attempting to establish communications
with the W2 from the PC, with no luck thus far.  The PC is running Win
10 Home, 64 bit.  I'm using the Elecraft USB cable plugged into the PC
Data jack on the W2 and a USB2 port on the PC .  When I plug the USB
cable into the PC, Windows recognizes it and creates a new Com port.
Next, I attempt to use the Elecraft W2 program to communicate with the
W2, specifying the new Com port (Com9) in Setup.  A message at the
bottom of the Setup window says "Looking for a W2..." and it sits there
that way forever.  If I try the W2 Utility, it tells me that it has
opened Com9 and is polling the W2 and that the W2 is not responding.

A trace of activity on the Com9 port when using the W2 program shows
Com9 opening and the program sending a semicolon repeatedly to the W2,
but no responses at all.  A check in Device Manager properties says the
latest driver is installed for the W2 port and that driver level is
2.12.28.0 dated 8/16/17.  Unable to check the firmware level with the W2
utility since the W2 doesn't respond.

So, where to go from here?  I suspect a driver problem, but it's not
clear what to do about it.

Richard,
My KXAT3 goes down many unpaved gravel roads in the mountains of North
Georgia and has for many years - since June 2012.
At times we joke that the roads are actually potholes inter-connected by
short stretches of gravel pavement.
The KX3 lives in the cab of a Ranger pick-up mounted on a seat bolt mounted
post.
Occasionally I have had to retighten the mount bolts but have not needed to
repair anything in the radio.

Hi Robert,

I feel your pain. The Main and Sub receivers are tremendously flexible and
figuring it out lead me to write the first Elecraft K3 book. The latest

I like A-Ab too, when working split. It makes the DX station stand out.
A nice thing is that the K3 knows that even when you have A-Ab set for
pileups, when you use Diversity, you automatically get A-b.

Sometimes, when the DX is hard to copy, I even switch back and forth
between Diversity and normal subreceiver operation in the same pileup.

You can adjust that setting to taste (make sure you have the Sub-RX

One thing I would add here is the L-Mix-R setting in the config menu, which
controls which VFOs go in which ear. As a DXer who loves working pileups, I can
tell you the best combination for me is A-Ab; meaning VFO A Audio (the DX
station transmitting) is present in the left ear, and mixed in with the pileup
(VFO-B) audio in the right ear.

You can adjust that setting to taste (make sure you have the Sub-RX enabled
first when you go into that menu item), but for me, A-Ab is the way to go. Try
the different combinations to see which works best for you.

I can give you a scenario that may make it easier to understand; this presumes
you have the sub rx installed.

The DX is staying on one TX frequency, put that in the VFO A, leave it alone.
Have your TX set to split on VFO B.  Go into split RX so you can hear both;
using the VFO B to listen to the station that the DX is working now (in your
right ear).

Once you determine (by tracking/listening) to the direction the DX is listening
(up, down or not) to work the pileup, you put the VFO B on your intended
'attack' point. At this time, you can hear what is there, plus the DX. (This
is where a bandscope REALLY pays off, MUCH simpler.)

Presuming the DX fades and you need more signal to hear, you turn off split and
you're listening only to the DX (VFO A) while VFO B is ready for split TX.

If you're listening split for another reason, you make the frequency you need
to hear alone in VFO A by pushing the A/B button, then turn off split, two
buttons max.

[Elecraft] Connect KPA-500, TS-480 and MicroKeyer II

2019-03-06 Thread Francisco "Siso" Hennessey HK3W
Hello to all.

Can someone please tell me what I need to buy to connect a Kenwood TS-480AT
with a Microkeyer II to an Elecraft KAT-500 and a KAP-500 so I can work
digital modes like RTTY and FT8?

I have not been able to find any information with respect to this so I would
be grateful for any help.

Regards

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] questions about using a sub-receiver

2019-03-06 Thread TJ Campie
the You can consider the 2nd rx as a completely separate radio - unique
filters, unique dsp, etc And yes, using the SUB function on the front
panel, you can select diversity receive (2nd rx is on the same freq as your
primary VFO, receiving with a different antenna) or normal SUB (2nd rx is
on 2nd vfo frequency on different antenna). In both cases, the stereo
effect is used to put VFO B in the opposite earphone from VFO A.

Re: [Elecraft] Intermittent loss of power output K3

2019-03-06 Thread Peter Lock
Thank you, Keith.
It was indeed a poor solder joint on one end of D1 on the LPA board; there
was a hairline gap between the solder and the terminal of the diode.
Reflowing the solder has cured the problem.

Hi Peter;
It definitely had one bad FET on the LPA when it was here, I do not see
in the report that it was intermittent, so I may not have looked closely
for those types of failures.
If you are sure it makes MW power when it is in the failure state, then
it is highly likely the LPA.
Inspect D1 closely, I have seen one side have poor solder, or it can
heat and the solder crystallize. Re-flow solder.
Pull the KPA3 but leave the KPAIO3 riser board and you can run it with
just the LPA.
Disregard errors about KPA3 or set it to "not inst" while you are
working on it.
Then set for several watts (not 5 exactly) and long press XMIT to go
into TUNE, IE transmit a carrier. (TUN PWR must be at "nor").
Then take a stick and tap around on the LPA. Around D1. Also the
green/red enamel on T1 & 2 can fail and the windings can short.
Tap the three bias pots, sometimes they fail internally, or their solder
points.
Look at all parts for solder problems.
You can put it in the fridge and chill it down to encourage failure, or
leave it on for an hour with a blanket over it to heat it up.
