[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2020-11-01 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Propagation is improving.  Signals have gotten better over the last
month.  Less background hiss with milder QSB.  Parts of the country do
have a rapid flutter, which doesn't help.  I copied the KB3 station as
KB3UDR and KB3FDR but little else.

More dog training, winterizing efforts, yard work, and outdoor
activity reports.  The loggers left piles of wood cut into lengths from
6 to 20 feet.  If I can pick it up I put it into the truck to cut up
later.  Once the rainy season begins in earnest the paths are too muddy
to traverse.

The sun angles were good for both nets.  I'll keep the times where
they are for now.  The forty meter net ended just as it was getting
dark.  Signals were good.  The twenty meter net took a while to wake
up.  The band seemed to be moving from beginning to end.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

Until next week, enjoy autumn, and 73,

 Kevin.  KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Broken boom mic attachment on a CM-500

2020-11-01 Thread Jim Brown
Hmmm. I've used nothing but a CM500 since about 2008, and I've never
seen one with a dynamic mic. The data sheet for all of them has said it
was dynamic, but none of then were.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Broken boom mic attachment on a CM-500

2020-11-01 Thread Walter Underwood
The Koss SB-40 apears to be the same headset as the Yamaha CM-500
but with a dynamic mic. The mic plug on my first CM-500 said “KOSS”,
so I’m pretty sure the only difference is the microphone.

I’ve heard complaints about the dynamic mic on the SB-40.

https://www.amazon.com/Koss-SB40-Computer-Headset-Microphone/dp/B5ML7T

The CM-500 does not need an adaptr to be used with the KX3. Turn off
the mic button menu setting and plug it in. If you want to get fancy, a regular
stereo-to-mono splitter will separate the logic bias from the mic bias for a
cleaner, higher-level mic signal.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Broken boom mic attachment on a CM-500

2020-11-01 Thread Walter Underwood
I tried a Koss SB-45 headset and hated it. It gets good reviews from hams and
has
an electret mic, but it was not comfortable at all. It sat on top of my ears
instead of
around my ears, plus it grabbed my head more tightly than the Yamaha CM-500.
Finally, the mic boom was not as easy to position.

I sent it back and ordered a new Yamaha CM-500. I haven’t noticed any major
differences between the new one and my eight year old one (wires broke on that
one).
The mic boom pivot is stiffer on the new one, but that could easily be a normal
manufacturing variation.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Broken boom mic attachment on a CM-500

2020-11-01 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
I bought a new CM-500 set on Amazon about two years ago. They feel great on my
head and work wonderfully.
In May I decided to try the Koss SB-45. Price was good (about $30 from Amazon).
They feel very similar to my Heil headset, meaning about the same as putting my
head in a vise. Simply too tight on my head, especially for wearing them
through a 48 hour contest. I went back to the CM-500s. I find it worth paying
the $60 from Amazon to get these instead of something else.

Hi Bill,

The only issue I've ever had with the CM500 has been a bad cable, and
it's happened at least twice. I'm pretty clutzy, so hard on headsets.

This piece I wrote for National Contest Journal several years ago
includes model numbers a few Koss headsets that hams have liked. They're
pretty much the same electrically.

[Elecraft] WTB: Fairly Basic K3 or Possibly K3S

2020-11-01 Thread Dave
I’m looking for a basic K3-100, preferably factory built. (Not a deal breaker
though) No second RX is required nor is the ATU. The KXV3 option is required. I
would be most interested in a radio with CW filtering and perhaps the 6Khz AM
filter. I’m just looking for a basic K3 at a reasonable price. The new
synthesizer board would be a plus, but not a requirement. Please e-mail me
off-list at n...@comcast.net. Please include serial number and price shipped to
44870.

If you are holding onto your K3 until your K4 gets close to shipping, I am not
in immediate need of the K3/K3S. If that’s the case, let me know.

Tnx es 73,
Dave N8AG

Re: [Elecraft] KIO3B Main Board Repair

2020-11-01 Thread Edward R Cole
In my case the RS232 I/F in my K3 (SN-4340) quit communicating with
WSJT-X. Tested with K3 Utility with same result. Tried a different
USB/RS232 cable, still not communicating. Troubleshot 9-pin
receptacle and discovered the ground pin was not grounded. Pulled
out the KIO3A and found the chip inductor on the ground line had
blown up open ckt. Removed it and substituted a wire jumper (still
not working).

At that point I was going to have to rig up a test cable to be able
to troubleshoot the module unplugged from the K3. Instead I sent it
to Elecraft Repair. They had it for 28-days and then replied that a
new digital board was needed as the existing board was not
reparable. They are on order.

I did have the option to buy a KIO3B but that was over $400 before
shipping (and also not in stock) I don't need or use the USB port.

I worked 1966-2009: ten years as an RF engineer, and the rest as
technician doing SM level troubleshooting/repairs. After retiring I
had a small business building transverters and amplifiers from kits
(all SM). I have a pretty decent workbench and test equipment to
26-GHz. II could have spent the effort in building a test jig and
trying to troubleshoot on my own. I figured it easier to let the
experienced staff at Elecraft do it.

Hoping to get my KIO3A repaired when board order arrives. I've
decided to set up my KX3 for computer modes using a Rig Runner NOMIC
I/F. I'll post the project on my website when done. The KX3 will
use WSJT-X for running JT65B on 2m-eme by driving a 2m transverter.
on 28-MHz with 3w.

You can view the Schematic diagrams (6 pages) for the Elecraft KIO3B module.
https://ftp.elecraft.com/K3S/Manuals%20Downloads/E740323%20K3s%20Schematic%20Files.pdf
The KIO3B is a multi-function module, that includes these functions:
1. RF Board interface
2. Digital I/O interface
3. Audio I/O interface
4. USB, Codec, RS232
FTDI FT232R (USB), TI PCM2901 (CODEC), TUSB2036 (2/3 port USB hub)
5. Digital I/O
6. Audio I/O
==
It is NOT impossible to repair or troubleshoot (component-level),
BUT it can be time consuming for the novice or weekend technician.
This is why Elecraft stated ?economical? (their bench time is NOT Free).
?
Sage advice from my high school electronics instructor, WB9FUR (sk,
2016) has served me well : External event (ESD, Over-voltage, Op
error) and I/O ports are major causes of module or circuit
failures. Electronic devices rarely ?die? for no reason (assumes QA
production of part).

?
?What functionality? has failed will narrow the circuit areas and
components to examine. IF you can ?think thru? those observed
symptoms, many failures can be pinpointed with a DVM to a few key components.

SMT repair experience and tools reduces repair time

[Elecraft] KXV144 maximum RX input power?

2020-11-01 Thread aj4tf
I'm thinking about rearranging some of the 2m antenna cabling (sharing
antennas) and I am wondering if there is a maximum input power rating on the
KXV144 receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Shutdown

2020-11-01 Thread Lou Mecseri

how old is your power supply capacitor?

Check your voltage with a VOM at the PS terminal and at the internal K3
Volt meter.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] HI CUR on 40

I would put the ferrite at the end of the coax before it goes into the

I AM an expert on this. :) The most important place for a choke in any
antenna system is at the feedpoint. It's function is to prevent the
feedline from becoming part of the antenna by adding a very high common
mode impedance to the common mode circuit. The only good reasons for a
choke elsewhere along the line are

1) to prevent the feedline from becoming a parasitic element of another
antenna; for example, I choke the coax feedlines to my high (125 ft)
dipoles for 80 and 40 so that they do not become parasitic to my three
160M verticals. e

2) to prevent coupling shield current by a mechanism quantified as the
"transfer impedance" of the coax shield. It is the ratio of the
differential voltage generated inside the coax as a result of shield
current. Its unit is Ohms, lower is better, and the lower limit is the
RF resistance of the shield at the frequency of interest. But the
quality, density, and uniformity of the shield makes an additive
contribution -- a poor quality shield increases the transfer impedance.

Both of these measures minimize inter-station interference, both in-band
and cross-band. W6GJB's contesting trailer has antennas for 15, 20, 40,
and 80 supported on a single pneumatic mast, with their feedpoints
within about 2 ft of each other. Because they are very effectively
choked, and because we have dual stubs on the outputs of the power amps
for the two stations, we can operate on adjacent bands at 500W
(K3/KPA500) with minimal interference from the lower frequency station's
harmonics to the higher frequency station. One day, Glen rebuilt the
connection at the antenna and accidentally left out the choke, and the
interstation interference was terrible.

A choke at the rig is only a band-aid for failure to do proper grounding
and bonding in the shack and throughout the house. See N0AX's ARRL book
on the topic, on which I collaborated, or the slides for my tutorial
talk at Pacificon, Visalia, and to various ham clubs.

The half-wave section of line you described in an earlier post may take
care of the feedpoint for one band (and it may not be as effective as a
well-designed choke), but it's not a solution for other bands. Properly
designed chokes can cover multiple adjacent bands. See
