Unfortunately, 99.9% of stuff like this that falls in our lap are little
of any value for RFI suppression. This looks like a component intended
for use as an inductor in power circuits; without winding experimental
chokes and carefully measuring them with a VERY well calibrated test
instrument and specially designed test jig, we have no way of knowing
anything about the part. I measured nearly 1,000 chokes wound on a
material that I'd already determined was the best choice for use at HF.

Bottom line -- if you need to kill RFI, study the app notes on my
website, buy the specific parts I recommend, and apply them as
recommended to wiring on noise sources, or wiring on victim equipment.

I had (where did I put it?) the direct phone number of the regional

In my case my DX-20 had not yet been on the air when the neighbor across
the street complained about me wiping out his stereo system just after
my Dad helped me put up a 40m vertical up on the roof. After the
neighbor found out I did not even have my transmitter he stopped
complaining. Word got out ( my Dad?) and no one in the neighborhood ever
complained again.

Re: [Elecraft] Through-hole Replacement for K3 Q5 (2N7002)

2021-10-21 Thread Ken K6MR
The Fairchild/On Semi data sheet is common to the 2N7000/2N7002/NDS7002A.
There are some differences in the maximum ratings, with the 2N7000 good for
more continuous drain current (probably due to the TO-92 package). They all
have the same drain-source breakdown voltage (60V).

I’m assuming this is Q5 on the main RF board. The active device parameters are
different but not enough to worry about in the circuit where Q5 is used. It is
nothing but a switch to reverse the active state of the 7R line to activate the
big FET used for the Key Out line. The 2N7000 will be fine.

The original surface-mount part seems to be back in stock in the US, but
I'm afraid that what I need is a through-hole equivalent, because the PC
board where the old one was mounted is a wreck (damage from part
failure, plus my ham-handed efforts to replace it). Google thinks a
2N7000 will do, but I'd sure like to get an expert opinion.

Re: [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-21 Thread Lyn Norstad
We had satellite several years ago, and had frequent outages - especially in
the Spring - due to severe weather, sometimes far away, but in line with the
satellites. We first switched to AT DSL and it was OK 15 years ago.

Eventually we went with Comcast/Xfinity cable, and have had virtually non-stop
service for at least 10 - 12 years. They own the cable biz in Chicagoland, and
outages are at a fraction of 1%. Most notably occurring only when they have
upgraded service (like installing fiber).

I currently have 235 Mbps down, and about 20 up for ~$80/mo.

We get the bulk of our TV OTA (85 broadcast stations) plus occasional streaming
... but our main cable use is Internet.

Hi Eric,

I see that you're in Santa Clara, so likely have many options for
alternate carriers.

Street View shows pretty much unobstructed view of the sky which makes
you a great candidate for Starlink. W6GJB and I have both signed up for
it, and are six months into waiting. Neither of us has cell coverage.
Comcast and satellite are my only options, Glen has flaky DSL from AT,
and satellite. He's tried two, latency makes them slow and prone to
dropouts. He has a good enough view of the sky that Starlink needs; mine
is pretty limited by the tall redwoods, but I'm hoping.

[Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-21 Thread Ron Bell via Elecraft
Unless you have no alternatives, find another ISP. Comcast is not a great
or consumer focused company. If you have a lot of time and energy, you can
fight this and may win. If you dont have Verizon or an alternative wireline
company in your area, look into Starlink, still in Beta but I am hearing
great reviews from those who have it.

Hi Eric,Xfinity is a closed system.? If your amateur radio operations are
causing problems it is their problem to fix. That said, a non ham friend back
in WI has been having recurring outages on his Spectrum system.? Technicians
have been out to his house several times and they acknowledge that there is
a problem in his subdivision.? Spectrum has documentation of the outages. The
last visit by Spectrum the technician said that the problem was probably
caused by a ham in the neighborhood.? ?As far as I know there are no hams
near him.? The problem is that Spectrum doesn?t want to spend the time or
the resources to fix the problem. It's just easier to blame the neighborhood
ham.I explained this to my friend and
he recently was told that Spectrum was going to replace the trunk lines
and distribution amps in the subdivision.? No committment on a date

caused wide area outages.? Oddly, these wide area outages did not include my
own house.? They told her the antennas themselves--absent any power--were
the problemThe last time I was threatened, I installed chokes and
opto-isolaters on our shielded ethernet lines, and after being told they use
14Mhz as their carrier frequency, I have stayed off 20m, only using 100w

gave me a number which I called, but he never called back.Any Ideas?? Does
anyone have a contact at the ARRL, or know a communications lawyer??

[Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-21 Thread Dana
Questions:

1. is this coax?
2. do you use a cable modem?

I found on 160 m my cable modem kept resetting…
discovered the upstream side uses HF and above 30 Mhz!!!
Fix?
Grounded the cable to my system ground (the existing cable ground was a joke)
…put some ferrites on the cable near the modem.
as a precaution put the modem in a copper screened box for testing…
Reset cured - … with proper grounding and ferrites….

You are Federally regulated, and so is the Cable company… so any issues are
likely their plant or
the gear attached to their plant…..(ie cable modems with improper bypassing or
disconnecte drop lines etc...

The towers stay, send that reigstered letter and CC ARRL….

[Elecraft] OT; large ferrite toroid core?

2021-10-21 Thread Mike Maloney
We were gifted a somewhat large (6"OD, 2.6" ID, 9/16" thick) ferrite core of
unknown mix and original use.   On face was marked 6.6uH w/4turns.   My
thinking it might make a good common mode RF choke on the output of an inverter
generator or on coax feedline.    Not familiar with properties of toroid cores
of this size.   Any ideas?

700 megabits and typically around 300 megabits with the occasional dip to 100

There may be more options than you realize that avoid having to deal
with the cable company and have no potential for interference to/from

I recently bought a house here (near St. George Utah).  There is no
cable in my neighborhood so at first it appeared that the only option
was DSL (via the telephone line) at 3 Mbps for $50/month.

But a quick Internet search found three local companies that offer
"Fixed Wireless" Internet service.  This is where they beam the Internet
to you via microwave from stations on nearby mountains. Costs range from
$40 to $200/month for 25 to 300 Mbps.

I had a similar setup back at my house in California that had no DSL or
cable available in the neighborhood.  Once I got the antenna properly
located it worked reliably and of course there was no QRM to/from the
HF/2 meter ham gear.

Yeah...normally it takes a 4-hour series of phone calls, half of them
involving screaming invective, closing a bank account, and getting a credit
card replaced just to get RID of a Comcast/Xfinity account. I know, I had
to do it when we switched to Verizon FIOS the day it became available at
our location.

If you have any other option besides them, do yourself the favor of signing
up with that other option. Xfinity is horrible, and even though I had to
threaten lawsuits in perpetuity to get shut of them, they still send us
junk mail over a decade later.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggestion re dealing with Xfinity and similar

2021-10-21 Thread Gwen Patton
The bulk of consumer electronics, like wi-fi routers, is covered under Part
15, and it is therefore the responsibility of the operator of the Part 15
gear to deal with interference issues, NOT a neighborhood ham. Hams are not
responsible for interference to Part 15 gear. In fact, Part 15 gear has the
following information on it, usually on a sticker (emphasis mine):

This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to
> the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful
> interference, and *(2) this device must accept any interference received,

Yeah, but they may only be satisfied if all the antennas are gone, and

Comcast at the soonest opportunity.

I would not waste my time with lawyers, letters, phone calls,
explanations, etc. As Mark Twain said: Never argue with an idiot; they

My bet is you have a rogue tech who couldn't find the problem and
decided to blame you.  He greatly exceeded his authority and as soon as
a higher-up hears what happened, this will be reversed.  Besides, since
we know you aren't the problem, the problem is still there and his
"solution" will be proven wrong.

[Elecraft] Through-hole Replacement for K3 Q5 (2N7002)

2021-10-21 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
The original surface-mount part seems to be back in stock in the US, but
I'm afraid that what I need is a through-hole equivalent, because the PC
board where the old one was mounted is a wreck (damage from part
failure, plus my ham-handed efforts to replace it). Google thinks a
2N7000 will do, but I'd sure like to get an expert opinion.

Oh, that's a cool trick! Sadly, I don't see anything in the manual or on
Google about it for the KX3.

You can, of course, always assign that menu option to PF1 or PF2, or go

modes you use.

Congrats on the KX3, by the way! It is a delightful rig.

[Elecraft] External keying auto detect on KX3?

2021-10-21 Thread Paul Huff
My new KX3 is in the mail and I am really looking forward to getting it! There
is a little trick that works on the K2, using a couple of diodes, that allows
you to have both a straight key and a paddle plugged in at the same time and
the rig will auto-detect which one is being used at a given time. Does this
same auto-detect work on the KX3 or do you have to make a menu entry each time
you switch keying devices?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-21 Thread Julia Tuttle
But remember, you're required to use the lowest power level feasible...

...so time to try for some really challenging DX, and keep your logs!

Seriously though, did you find out if they're actually kicking you off or
if this was just a grumpy local tech misguidedly trying to fix a problem by
threatening you?

Julie

2021-10-21 Thread Al Lorona
Jim beat me to it. I was also going to urge you to transmit as much as possible
on 20 meters with the highest power you can. The idea is to become a hair ball
that Xfinity can't swallow nor can't cough back up.

If anybody comes up to you to complain that you're still causing outages, use
the same twisted logic that Xfinity used and tell them, "That's impossible. It
couldn't be me because Xfinity has already disconnected me."
