Re: [Elecraft] COM port problems

2022-06-29 Thread Peter Dougherty (W2IRT)
It's possible (and I'm guessing somehow likely), but darned if I know what
to even look for. These are things that were set when the computer was built
from scratch last year, they have worked 100% reliably over thousands of
QSOs in both Commander and N1MM+ ever since, and absolutely nothing was
changed in terms of configuration or even a Windows Update in at least two
weeks. I just needed to restart the computer after moving it from a wall
outlet to a UPS, and it started going crazy from that point on.

Whatever the issue is, it seems to affect ALL the COM ports in the system
the same; neither Commander nor N1MM can open the radio port, or either of
the two rotor ports.

I did somehow manage to get Commander working (don't aske me how, it just
started), but the rotors are still no-go (and not critical at the moment).

Subject: [Elecraft] COM port problems

OK, got a massive problem that just cropped up this evening that is far
beyond my understanding that has completely killed my ability to use my K3
with my computer.

After restarting the PC, suddenly I cannot communicate with the radio using
DX Lab Suite or N1MM+ on the assigned COM port. I have downloaded the K3
Utility software and it is able to connect to the radio on COM5, its usual
port, and invoke macros via the Utility. So I know there's proper
communication between the radio and the PC. But once I close down the K3
Utility program I get the first major problem. The radio goes into transmit
for 10 seconds, releases for about 4 or 5 second, and goes back in to
transmit. Only powering the radio off and back on again stops this behavior.

The main issue is that no CAT control software seems to be able to connect
to the radio at all. The radio is on COM5, and has been for at least the
last 4 or 5 years, and until today it has just worked, even after building a
new computer last November. I just rebooted today and everything went to
heck.

The kicker is that's it's not a K3 hardware problem, and since it works with
neither N1MM nor DX Lab software any more it's apparently not those programs
either, and quite frankly I just don't know where to look next. Compounding
the issue, and likely related to it, the N1MM Rotor control cannot find
either COM port assigned to the rotors (COM1 and COM3). I have tried
removing the ports and re-adding them in Device Manager but the problem
still persists. I am absolutely prepared to pay a certified systems
professional to diagnose and fix this, but with ultra-specialized radio gear
I doubt they'd be able to figure it out either. Any suggestions? I'm
basically QRT until I can fix this.

Wayne,

I think we may be in the territory of the difference between a circuit

the CMP display SHOULD read is the amount of gain reduction taking

Dial readout is the WRONG way to set compression -- it's meaningless.
The RIGHT way is to adjust COMP for a METER reading of 10 dB on voice
peaks.

OK tested with COMP meter and 25 gives 10-dB. 20 setting produced about
2-dB.

[Elecraft] Diversity RX with K3 + Sub RX

2022-06-29 Thread dm4im

Elecrafters,
i recently bought a used K3 with Sub RX and KAT3A internal ATU. I've
enjoyed Diversity via SUB RX on my older K3, but never had the bells and
whistles of the ATU.
So with -say- a vertical Antenna attached to Ant1 and a Dipole to Ant2,
i can receive Diversity (if distance between them is sufficient) . Can i
assign TX to Ant2 and still receive Diversity? Is there a macro for that?

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Note from a skeptic

2022-06-29 Thread Al Lorona
A couple of people have asked me for more detail.

The failure mode was interesting. The battery is, in fact, charged. The no-load
terminal voltage is 13.5 V. However, as soon as you put a load on it -- even
just 1 mA current draw... actually, even pressing your fingers onto the
terminals to draw a few microamps-- the voltage starts dropping, eventually
reaching zero at some current. Somewhere inside that pretty ABS case is a
fully-charged LiFePO4 imprisoned by the very circuit that is supposed to keep
it healthy and available. I think that's what makes this so tragic.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 sn 179 drop outs

I used my K2, s/n 179, at FD with great success with one problem. During tuning on 40 and

I bought the radio at an estate sale last September with the intent to use it
for FD. It was a Rev A so I put in the Rev B upgrades for whatever options were
installed (not much if any). I also added the noise blanker. I had noticed the
drop out when I used the radio on occasion but assumed it was due to lack of
use.
Elecraft doesn't show an upgraded encoder assembly on their website. Is there
one for such an old radio? I have an email in to the tech support there, as
well as researching the reflector.

I am not aware of problems with the main K2 encoder, or with encoder
problems causing audio to drop. Actually, I don't fully understand what
you mean with "drop out" - does the radio suddenly change frequency, and
if so, does that also happen if the main dial is locked?

If the encoder has an intermittent short then the frequency may jump but
it should not cause an audio cut.

My first recommendation is to take apart the front panel and closely
investigate the soldering between the main encoder and the frontpanel PCB.

There used to be a new encoder for the K2, see
https://ftp.elecraft.com/K2/Manuals%20Downloads/E740177%20K2%20Encoder%20Installation%20Instructions,%20rev%20B.pdf

THis encoder included a small PCB to make the new encoder behave like
the old one. This used to be listed as K2 spare part but I don't see it
listed anymore. Note that if you get a new encoder, you also get a
different tuning know because the shaft diameter is different.

But, in all years I yet have to hear about "K2 main encoder doesn't work
anymore". There have been issues with other encoders on newer radios but
the main K2 one has been robust. You may want to check the soldering job
done.

Re: [Elecraft] Ham Qualifications, Customer Service

2022-06-29 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Jim,

There's always room for improvement, and thanks for your observations. In
general I defer to your audio expertise.

Perhaps, as in the past, you and I can debate the finer points over a bottle of
red at Visalia. Meanwhile, here's how it currently works:

- The CMP knob establishes an upper bound on the compression algorithm (0-30
dB).

- When you speak, the CMP shows you whether the mic gain is sufficient to fully
hit the desired level.

- Typically this happens when ALC is in the vicinity of 4 or 5 bars.

This is consistent with all of our transceivers, and as far as I know it has
proven effective and easy to use. Just crank CMP to the desired level and shoot
the fish in the barrel.

2022-06-29 Thread Wayne Burdick
Sorry to hear about your experience with LiFePO4 batteries, Al.

Fortunately we have not (to the best of my knowledge) had any such issues with
the Li-ion battery pack we offer (11 V, 2.5 Ah). I have three KXBT2 packs that
have been in more or less continuous use since 2015. They've been charged
hundreds of times, and seem to have not lost significant capacity. We tested
the heck out of these to make sure they were safe, too.

Re: [Elecraft] Strong Signals FD

2022-06-29 Thread Wilson Lamb via Elecraft

Thanks, Wayne, I figured as much, clever, as usual!
I think it was the SSB station, because the notice sppeared for only a second,
if that.
The surprising part is that tuning was disabled during the strong signal
period.
Our previous FDs (two clubs) have been QRP for years, so it couldn't happen.
Our CW did very well,#2, but we wanted the SSB people to have more fun this
time, which they did.
We had 4xK3, 1xK3s, and one I never saw.
I had digi hash from a nearby station.  Should have given them my updated
(synth) unit, but forgot.
Thanks,
WL

Hi Wilson,

The K3 looks for "reverse power" coming back into the antenna jacks in receive
mode. This is possible if there's a nearby transmitter, typically when the
antennas are in each other's near field. On 40 m this could happen even at
100'.

If reverse power becomes excessive, the K3 will cut off RF input to the
receiver for some period of time and display the Strong Signal message. When
the reverse power condition disappears, operation returns to normal.

The solution is to separate the antennas more or reduce power.

2022-06-29 Thread Doug Hensley
The following parts are available on a first come first served basis. No
PAYPAL.
Payment by simple check or M.O. for immediate shipment. No International Sales.

I have one each:

KBPF3A Gen-Cov Bandpass Board: $289.95 Board as new. Shipping is $9.00 to
lower 48.
If you want insurance you must request it.

KRX3A SUB-Receiver: $795.00. Sub-Rx as new, includes everything listed in
the manual for
installation and comes with the 2.7 kc filter. This unit was checked then

task not counting shipping. This ships to buyer for $15; if you want
insurance you must
request it.

KFL3A 8 pole roofing filters: $175.00 each.
I will keep a list of filter buyers starting today. But, first choice on these

There is a good chance your battery came with, or should have, advice to
charge the battery every six months or less to keep it alive.

I know we hate to read instructions...but in this case it is an expensive
avoidance.

I've been told that some battery assemblers provide only part of the
required electronics to properly balance the multiple cells that make up
the battery.

A 100 Ah Bioenne LiFePO4 battery has been running the two K3s on my
operating desk for 6 years. It's floated from a repurposed Thinkpad PSU
through a Genasun MPPT charge regulator.

Re: [Elecraft] Ham Qualifications, Customer Service

2022-06-29 Thread Kent Trimble
Burdick has too much on his mind to bother with dates, but actually it
was late 2007 ...

From my logbook of that year:

Sun, Oct. 14:   Email from Elecraft saying they would be shipping this week
Thu, Oct. 18:   Email from Elecraft saying they would be shipping today
Fri, Oct. 19:   Serial Number 21 delivered by UPS at 9 a.m. CDT
Sat, Oct. 20:  Assembly of kit began at 10:15 a.m. and was completed on
Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with time-outs for meals, sleep, participation in
an emergency pandemic communications exercise, and continuous
annotations and corrections to the assembly manual as I encountered them
and as NØSS recorded them at the request of Elecraft.

Assembly went smoothly, filter calibration (manually) went well, and
first contact was made at 5:02 p.m. that afternoon on the ECN (Elecraft
20 meter Net).  Rare DX it was ... across town to NØSS who was NCS.

Fully updated, S.N. 21 has worked every Field Day since, demonstrated
ham radio at numerous Boy Scout affairs, handled a bunch of special
events, an ARRL 100th anniversary, a Missouri bicentennial, and 15
Halloweens from Frankenstein.

[Elecraft] Strong Signals FD

2022-06-29 Thread Wilson Lamb via Elecraft

I would occasionally get "Strong Signal" on my display, accompanied by very
brief interruptions to my anility to change frequency.  I'd start turning the
knob and the VFO would take 200-500 mS (guess) to respond.
I also noticed the same thing re keying.  Sometimes the first dit or dah would
be dropped when I started sending!
Is this normal, common?
It didn't cause a problem and there was no lingering effect.

Re: [Elecraft] Ham Qualifications, Customer Service

2022-06-29 Thread Ed Cole
I bought my K3/10 in 2010 (SN 4340). Didn't realize that was only two
years after launch of the radio "We started selling the K3 in early
2008-per Wayne".

radio has performed well over the last 12 years. Only one failure of
the KIO3A board which I opted to have Elecraft repair (two months in
2020; height of Covis issues). I did upgrade my two synth boards and
upgraded the general band filter to add 630m use.

Recently, in light of comments about the KIO3 board, I ordered a KIO3B
as backup spare (just in case as computer I/F is critical for my use of
the K3 on digital modes - eme).

Since I run in transverter mode most of the time, little actual usage of
the 10w modules have transpired. Now running 6m-eme at 3w still ought
to be gentle on the transistors (I drive a MRF-1K50H LDMOS final amp).

Surface-mount repair tasks one's abilities in eyesight and finger
control (I did s-m repair for over twenty years, professionally and
getting difficult as I age). So I understand the comments about
self-repair of much of today's electronics.

When I was working in a commercial shop we had a rule about deciding
repair or replace: if repair costs equal or exceeded 50% of replacement
we would recommend replacement. Then there were always the customer
with 1950's stuff wanting repair with no hope of finding replacement
parts (eg vibrator PS).

Note on SSB compression, I've run at 20 with no complaints of distortion
or splatter. I do not do "combat contesting" or "aggressive DX", so
that seems a good setting. Audio drive also at 20 using Heil mic.

Spending money on ham radio at advanced age is a difficult choice. But
I decided to renovate my 12x38 foot storage building into a ham
shack/workshop this summer (looking like $15K with most work done by
contractor). But moving out of 11x12 spare bedroom will be nice
(emptying the storage bldg is not).

[Elecraft] K3 data mode not working on 6 meter band NQ3N

2022-06-29 Thread Bob McGraw
I used my K3S on 6M extensively on FT-8 over the Field Day weekend.   I
used WSJT-X with the Radio Mode set for Fake IT .

For the radio I have DATA MD set to DATA A.  I think this is band
specific.  There should be no difference in the set-up for 6M being the
same for 160M - 10M.

Hi

My K3 will not display FT8 signals on 6 meters when set to
data mode. Data mode works on 10 thru 160 but not on 6 meters, FT8 decodes
fine when USB is selected.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, Bob NQ3N

[Elecraft] IMD of MOSFETs vs. bipolar

2022-06-29 Thread Andy Durbin
"The result is that it's very difficult to cause overdrive and splatter with a
K4, even if you try to do it intentionally."

Same is true for the much older Kenwood TS-590S. I have tried several times to
produce dirty signals to illustrate digital modes presentations. I have never
been able to do so and had to use examples of other transmitted signals I had
stored in my "rogues gallery".

One of the worst digital mode signals I ever saw came from an Elecraft K3. It
was fixed quickly after I sent a screen shot.

Re: [Elecraft] IMD of MOSFETs vs. bipolar

2022-06-29 Thread Lou Laderman via Elecraft
It’s only anecdotal, but I was in a 6M QSO where we both were receiving each
other with 20dB+ signals. I adjusted CMP from 0 to 30 and the difference heard
by the other station was 6dB. It definitely works.

[Elecraft] K2 sn 179 drop outs

2022-06-29 Thread Paul Kemp

I used my K2, s/n 179, at FD with great success with one problem. During tuning
on 40 and 20M the encoder would temporarily "drop out", causing the received
signals to cut out.
