[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2022-07-16 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It was a sunny, mild week with a few days with morning fog. No rain
fell so the fog is helpful.  The local bees pollinated the thimble berry
bushes well.  A lot of blossoms have set fruit due to them.  Hopefully I
get a few handfuls later this summer.  The salmon berries are ripening;
early fruit is very sour.  Some wild strawberries are popping out too.
Oregon grape has finished flowering and has set fruit.  You can eat them
but they're very seedy.  It does make good jam if you strain some of
them out.

The sun has many spots with a number of active areas facing our
way.  Solar flux is at 171 at the moment.  The sun is really waking up,
it tossed another CME at us.  There is a geomagnetic storm watch a few
days from now if it hits.  I expect the QSB will be moderate to heavy.
Noise will be up too.  However, the signals seem to have their own
trials with propagation.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

73,  Kevin.  KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] K3s 8 pole filters for sale

2022-07-16 Thread Doug Hensley
Everything has been sold now except the 250 hZ and 2.8 kHZ filters.

They'll only be available for a short period so speak up if you want one.

These are as new Elecraft K3s 8 pole filters made by Inrad (as I understand it).

The 250 hZ is razor sharp and the 2.8 is the wide SSB filter, great for QSO's.

Cheers,

Doug W5JV

Subject: K3s 8 pole filters for sale

I have one more set of K3s 8 pole filters for sale. These tend to
go quickly so speak up if you need one:

These are in the following widths and are as new:

250 hZ,
2.1 kHZ,
2.8 kHZ and
13 kHZ (for FM)

No paypal. M.O. or bank check only.

Thanks,

Doug W5JV

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Synthesizer, KSYN3A

2022-07-16 Thread Wes
The Boatanchor AM guys are going to be on the air making Qs; the rest of us will
be waiting for parts. ;-)

The KSYN3A design is based on microcontrollers from Microchip.
I've ordered some controllers at Microchip myself (of a type that is much more
common than the ones used in KSYN3A) and today I received the 5th "your ship
datum has changed" notice. Note, we're talking delivery in 3Q2023, but the
next notification will be 4Q2023; my first delivery notice was for June 2023.
And my order is small.

The market is still absolutely bonkers. At QRL, I know about at least a dozen
re-design efforts to change designs to make meet the semiconductors that we
still can get.

Wayne reported similar difficulties in his status report three months ago. And
it doesn't make sense to keep reporting "it is going to come..." because the
ship dates keep shifting and part delivery promises, even contractual, keep
changing.

The industry expects things to quieten down a bit next year, but we'll still
need to catch up the backlog.

I fully understand Wayne not reporting any ship dates. I would report only if
I have all parts on my desk, for all parts needed in the design. Even mundane
things like connectors (DC connectors) now yield delivery time of more than a
year out.

So it goes,

Geert Jan

Re: [Elecraft] Using the K3s Tune button causes a growing SWR on my KPA500

2022-07-16 Thread Bill Johnson
From what has been stated, this not a true end fed Half wave using a 9-1 balun.
That is the issue. The balun needs to be a 49-1 ratio to properly feed an
EFHW antenna. The method you are using requires a different counterpoise than
an EFHW. EFHW are efficient at one frequency and direct harmonics. So, the
balun is likely heating up. The 53' antenna is a random wire and needs to have
a proper counterpoise. Random end feds are different birds.

No.  Over time the current does not "back up".

Something in your system is heating up.  My bet would be that your toroids used
as common mode chokes are heating up due to the very high voltages that exist
at the end of an end fed half wave antenna.  It's not likely to be a current
problem since there isn't much current at all at the end of a half wave antenna
... unless yours isn't actually a half wave at whatever frequency your feeding
it.

It is also possible that something in the Palstar tuner is heating up, but it
uses decent looking inductors wound on ceramic forms so I really doubt it.

I'm guessing that you aren't using any sort of counterpoise with your EFHW.  If
you did, it would have the effect of making your EFHW look a bit more like just
a severely off-center fed dipole with the result that the voltage (and possibly
the mismatch) would be less.

In any case, don't go key down any longer than you need to if you don't want to
fry the toroids before you get a chance to fix the problem.

Dave AB7E
