Sounds like your audio bandpass is narrowed somehow. Check the low/high or width settings. I have never had that happen, but I can't remember the last time I made a non-digital Q on the KX3 so setting never get changed. Thanks to all for solving my puzzle. I was mistakenly thinking that the filter setting (bandwidth) was maxed out when the graphic was max and didn't realize it can go much higher. Are your filter settings different between the two modes?
