Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

2023-10-13 Thread Bill Frantz
I have frequently used my K3 at 100 watts with FT8 and RTTY. I haven’t had
anything which would indicate that components are getting overstressed (e.g.
bad smells).

Now, I don’t think I have given a full 100 watts when something isn’t connected
in the antenna system, although the KAT3 does “match” an open antenna line.
Since in that situation, it clicks for a long time before coming to a “match”,
I tend to notice that there is a problem before applying full power.

Re: [Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3

2023-08-08 Thread Bill Frantz
When I had my radio set up about 20 feet from the kitchen, I used a foot switch
so my replies to my wife didn’t go out over the air. When I moved to New
Hampshire and my shack moved into an isolated room, I started using VOX, which
works very well on my K3.

VOX definitely eliminates one piece of clutter, but I don’t know how well is
will work with the ambient noise from wind etc. in a POTA/SOTA environment.

Re: [Elecraft] A dumb question about lightning

2023-08-04 Thread Bill Frantz
While you are trying to make sense of the best practices lightning protection
documents:

N0AX’s ARRL book “Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur”

Motorola’s STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNICATION SITES
  https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/Lands_ROW_Motorola_R56_2005_manual.pdf

K9YC’s Power, Grounding, Bonding, and Audio for Ham Radio.
  http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf

There are a few items of AC electrical behavior to keep in mind:

Lightning is produced by a giant spark-gap transmitter. It is a VERY broad RF
signal centered at about 1 MHz.

There’s no such thing as a wire at RF, they are all transmission lines.
Everything has both inductance and capacitance. These inductances will affect
the way grounding lines work.

Conductors at RF exhibit what is called the surface effect, where the current
is limited to the surface of the conductor. This is why 50cm (2 inch) wide
copper leads, with their large surface area, are recommended. (Note that the
surface effect is also important for AC power distribution systems at 50 or 60
Hz.)

Proper bonding in the station can make all the equipment “float” at the same
voltage above the local soil. If no current flows through the equipment, it
will not be damaged.

Re: [Elecraft] problem with K2, KAT100 and K2100PA combo

2022-07-12 Thread Bill Frantz
I’m with Jim on this one. I particularly like that they are hermaphroditic, so
I can not worry about which end is providing the current. Helps with battery
charging for example.

The only failures I have had is when the metal “pins” are not fully inserted in
the shell. (The curve at the end of the pin needs to go completely over the
spring in the shell.) If not fully inserted, the connectors don’t firmly
connect and become unreliable. They also disconnect easily.

I can imagine that if you hot plug them enough, you can erode the connectors
from the DC arc, producing unreliability. Note that the manufacturer
specifically says not to hot plug them.

Re: [Elecraft] COM port problems

2022-07-03 Thread Bill Frantz
I have not had the problem of devices “moving” on the Mac. I think the Mac uses
the FDTI serial number to keep them straight. When I was using a RS-232
protocol analyzer on to chase a problem, I had 4 Elecraft FTDI RS-232 <—> USB
cables hooked up. Two for the two directions of the analyzer, one for the K3
acting as test machine, and 1 for a KX3 acting as the other end of the RF link.
The Mac always seemed to keep them straight, even when I plugged them into
different USB sockets on hubs etc.

I’ve always wondered why Microsoft hasn’t fixed this problem. And I sympathize
with my friends who use Windows.

It’s actually better than that. FT8 only transmits for 12.6 seconds giving a

Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Bill Frantz
From what I’ve heard about the K4D, its advantages over the K3 are in areas
that probably aren’t tested in Sherwood’s receiver tests. For example:

I have heard people say the RX audio is cleaner.
People say the UI is better.
There are more antenna input/output connections.
The voice compression just released gets rave reviews.
People like the noise reduction better.

There’s more to a radio than just the RX, although if the RX isn’t good, you
probably should look at another radio. (Or why I don’t use the Icom 706MII in
my car very often.)

Re: [Elecraft] Boom mounted Mike for a KX3

I recently bought a CM-500 from B Photo (a recommended vendor). They were
advertising it as having a dynamic microphone, but that was wrong. The CM-500
still has, as it always has had, an electret microphone, which is well
supported by the KX3 (and many other Elecraft radios. It even comes with a
battery operated power supply which allows it to be used with equipment which
was designed for dynamic microphones.

I am definitely not in charge of the product literature for this device, which

Re: [Elecraft] K3s, KPA500, FT8 and 6 meters

2022-03-30 Thread Bill Frantz
It sounds like that signal was a harmonic of your primary signal. If it was
1KHz off, it might have been the second harmonic of a 1KHz audio tone.

These harmonics are almost certain if you are overdriving the audio chain, so
checking the drive is the first thing. Your drive to the radio at 4 bars with
the 5th flickering is spot on.

Since there are so many volume controls in the audio chain — wsjtx, one or more
in the computer’s audio chain, the control on the radio — you get the idea. If
one of them is too high and being compensated by having another one low, that
could cause the harmonics. The fix is probably to try to set them all midway in
their adjustment range.

The reason the local ham asked about CAT is the way wsjtx tries to suppress
harmonics. It tries to set the radio’s transmit frequency (via CAT) so that the
second harmonic of the audio tone it is sending will be suppressed by the
output audio bandwidth filter in the transmitter.

I fully agree. When I have had a problem with my K3, mostly ones with my

They have told me how to signal trace through the radio, and I have been able

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 on KX3

2022-02-17 Thread Bill Frantz
I have run PSK31 on my KX3 using a USB sound “card” that I got for about $5
from Amazon. I also used the standard rig to computer RS232/USB cable that came
with the radio for controlling the radio, PTT, etc from the computer. With the
sound card, I had to include a pad in the radio to microphone input on the
sound card to keep from overloading it. I used cocoaModem on the Mac, although
fldigi also works.

Using the contest logger built into RUMlogNG, you may be able to use the
built-in encode/decode of the KX3 with PSK31. RUMlogNG-contest uses the CAT
commands to send and receive RTTY and CW in contest mode. It may be a simple
matter to set the radio for PSK D and have that work. (Note that you have to
run the radio in FSK D to use this feature with RTTY.)

Note also that cocoaModem is a 32 bit program. I have not found a 64 bit
version to run it on more modern versions of MacOS. If anyone know of 64 bit
versions of cocoaModem and cocoaNEC please let me know. They are the things
that are keeping me from “upgrading” my MacOS.

Re: [Elecraft] RPN Calc App For Android

2022-01-30 Thread Bill Frantz
I have an HP-11 bought when they were new, which is an old and reliable
companion. I have “Retro 15C” on my iPhone which also works well. While I
generally don’t program them — I like the self-documentation of a real
programming language for anything complex enough to need a program — they work
really well for quickly working a simple calculation.

I have never been able to figure out which order the infix calculators are
going to work my problem, so without RPN I’m up a creek.

Re: [Elecraft] On ground - in ground radials

> Good methods for getting the wire down.

K9YC recommends <http://k9yc.com/160MPacificon.pdf>:

Guidelines for All Radials
• Insulated wire holds up longer
• #18 minimum size for durability
–Large spools hard to buy
• #14 THHN (house wire) works well
–Mass market items often less expensive and easy to find
–Discount for 6 or more spools at big box stores (Home Depot, Lowe’s)

He says about ground screens:

Ground Screens Can Work
• Some AM broadcasters use a heavy copper mesh, typically 40 ft square
surrounding the tower, with radials connected at perimeter of the mesh
• Provides very effective shielding between antenna and earth where
current density and magnetic fields are strongest

Some Ground Screen Solutions
• Use strips of 3-ft or 5-ft wide galvanized hardware cloth
  –~ $350 for 600 sq ft, 19-gauge
• Or strips of galvanized welded wire fencing 2” x 2” or 2” x 4” grid
  –~ $ 150 for 600 sq ft, 14 gauge
• Or strips of galvanized wire mesh, 1” x 1” squares

Some Ground Screen Solutions
• If possible, lay strips out radially in four directions
• Use alternative layouts when it’s the best you can do
–A single strip, centered below the antenna if possible, or even two running
 parallel to each other
–More is better

For more details and references see the website.

Re: [Elecraft] Output power being eaten

2021-12-31 Thread Bill Frantz
After reading all the comments on this thread, I think that
Skip, K6DWG and Bob, K4TAX have the best theory of what
happened. Careful reading of the SPE 1.3K manual indicates that
the power output of the amp is sampled between the amp and the
internal tuner and that the recommended tune power is 30W.

So the idea that the tuner could have gotten into a state where
it ate the output power is at least credible. I would expect a
KW dissipated in the tuner to have damaged it, but fortunately
that does not seem to have happened.

The manual strongly recommends setting the exciter radio (my K3)
to maximum power output and trusting the ALC to set the correct
drive power. Many here, including me, will disagree. However, as
a result of this recommendation, the manuel doesn't really
address the drive power issue.

Please note that the antenna is driven through coax and not open
wire or ladder line, so theories based on those feed lines don't apply.

Thanks to everyone who replied. This list is a wonderful resource.

Re: [Elecraft] Net times & frequencies?

2021-12-20 Thread Bill Frantz
It should be noted that the SSB 80M net has had some issues
fitting in. We share a frequency with a net that's been active
for over 35 years which runs on local (daylight savings) time.
So we are at 0100z during the summer and 0200z during the
winter. Yesterday, we had a lot of interference from stations on
3.774 and moved to 3.783 which was open. If you want to check
into that gabfest, look around. Or let any of the net controls
know you are planning to checkin by Sunday morning and we will
try to find you, either on-air or on-line, to get you to the net.

Re: [Elecraft] Using KX3 Utility to decode CW, RTTY

2021-11-26 Thread Bill Frantz
My experience with the K3 may have some application here. When
using the K3 to decode CW/RTTY, the decoded text can be
displayed on the K3, on the P3, or have it sent to a computer.
If you try to display it on the P3 and send it to the computer,
both locations drop characters. If you want the computer to get
the complete decode, turn off the display on the P3.

Re: [Elecraft] Forty Meter SSB

2021-11-23 Thread Bill Frantz
I found when I built a single wire dipole for 40M it didn't have
a low enough SWR across the band for my preferences at the time.
I fixed the problem by using two wires, spaced about 10cm, 4"
apart for the elements. They join in the middle at the common
mode choke and just loop back at the ends. This lowers the Q of
the antenna enough so it satisfied my SWR goals.

A half-wave dipole tuned to resonate in the middle of the band

These times should play well with the SSB nets which are:

1800z 14303.5
1900z 7180
0200z 3775

The 80M net details are in flux because the net before us on the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Expert 1.3

2021-10-04 Thread Bill Frantz
I have used an Expert 1.3K amp for several years with my
upgraded K3. The short form is it works well. I got it when my
wife won a $1000 off certificate. I knew this amp was a popular
choice of many DXpeditions, and so worked well with the K3s they
used and was reasonably reliable. When I got my amp, I also
ordered a custom cable for the K3 which was delivered in the
same shipment as the amp.

I am careful to not depend on the ALC to control exciter power,
but instead set the output power on the K3 to the right level to
get the output power I want from the amp. I believe this
procedure will result in a cleaner signal.

I am thinking about replacing it with an Elecraft amp for two reasons:

Full break in CW produces a lot of relay clicking. The
Elecraft amps use

  PIN diodes.

The level of integration between the exciter (K3) and the amp
is much
better. I can have my K3 operate at 100W when the amp is
offline and at
whatever drives the amp to the right power level when the amp
is online

  with automatic switching.

Cheers - Bill, AE6jV

Remember to take it slow and easy. Read each instruction and
make sure you understand it. Then do it, check it off on the
assembly manual, and go to the next one.

It is generally a good idea to inventory the parts so you
understand which screw goes where. The small parts can be
organized in an egg carton or a ice cube tray.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Level

My wife won $1000 off an Expert amplifier at Visalia maybe 5
years ago. I ended up getting a 1.3K because I had noticed many
DXpeditions using it. Mine is still working well, knock on wood.
I run in on 120V at theMedium power setting. I get 700-800 watts
out. I'm always thinking of selling it and getting an Elecraft
Amp, but so far no action.

My latest station dream has the antennas 150-200 feet from the

transceiver while I wait to receive my K4D. The 1st time the
finals blew may have been operator error. Subsequently, I
discovered that the software allows one to limit the power on
each band. So I set the SPE to mid power (it has low, mid, high
settings) and determined the correct output for 700-800W. That
left at least 20% head room. Despite this seem lying failsafe
procedure, the finals blew again. The distributor would not
cover this under warranty on the grounds that my radio has
spurious spikes which blew the finals. In fact, if you run the
“wrong” radio with this amp, you don’t have any warranty
because the radio is indicted as the cause of failure sight unseen.

The amp when it works is wonderful. One case, 24 lbs, very
quiet. I had everything linked together with my SteppIR DB18E
through DxLab.
Two times back to the distributor for repair in 3 months was
enough. I sold it and now have a KPA1500 which is working great.

BTW, the distributor also says the IC-7300 (my backup) has
spurious spikes as well and presumably is another transceiver
not covered under their warranty.

Re: [Elecraft] In Line Power Pole Fuses

2021-07-22 Thread Bill Frantz

I'm in general agreement with Bob, but there are some details.

(1) You don't want to melt you power supply wires. If you trust
the power supply device to properly current limit, then you
don't need a fuse. If you are using something like my old
solar/deep cycle battery supply, you definitely need a fuse.

(2) The important thing about voltage drop is getting enough
voltage to the final amp in the radio to avoid producing all
kinds of distortion in the output signal. This distortion
results in a bad signal that causes interference with neighbors
on the band. If you are running 14.5 volts receive load, you can
afford a bigger voltage drop than if you are running off of
batteries at 12 volts receive load.

In this latter case, you probably can't afford any voltage drop
at all and should throttle back to a maximum of 50 watts or so
to clean up your signal.

Our real-life experience was one Field Day with our QRP digital
K3 station. The deep cycle lead/acid battery was getting tired.
The people in the CW tent were complaining of interference from
the digital station. A fresh battery fixed the problem.

With that power supply, which has both good over voltage
protection and current limiting, adding fuses in the DC line

fuses to the DC power cables.

I agree that all 100 watt transceivers should have their DC
power leads connected direct to the power supply terminals and
not through any DC distribution device.    As a rule,
receive load to 100 watt CW/key closed transmit load, the
voltage drop at the radio should be less than 0.5 volts.

[Elecraft] Li-ion vs. LiFePO4 was Re: K2 alive again, yay!

LiFePO4 has several other advantages, besides not swelling
during charge. (Swelling is what caused fires in early devices
in places like airplanes. They contained the battery with no
room for expansion resulting in burst cases and exposed
lithium.) The other ones that come to my mind are:

Cold weather performance. (My winter FD LiFePO4 was reliable at
-15C (5F), unlike my Li-ion laptop.)

Low self-discharge.

Voltage compatibility with "12V" systems.

There are probably others.

Applying this fix to a remote station is an interesting

2021-07-01 Thread Bill Frantz
Let me add my message of condolence to Rose. I have one of her
cases and it is a gem. I hope she will be able to continue
making them in the future.

I didn't know Ken well. My log doesn't show his call. I think
the only time I met him was at the 2012 Visalia DX Convention
that N6TV photographed*. I just read through his posts to the
Elecraft list in my archive and recognize the large amount of
old radio lore and wisdom he contributed over the years.

Re: [Elecraft] HOA Crap

2021-06-29 Thread Bill Frantz
OK. I have a DXCC award on my wall. It is from Los Gatos, CW.
It's showing 185 mixed confirmed in my logbook. I moved to NH in
2019. My NH log shows 106 mixed confirmed. (I keep separate logs
for NH and CA contacts.) It's a bit hard to get the union of the
two logs, but the results will be higher than 185 due to the
ease of EU contacts. (I think, if I've done my uploads to
Clublog correctly, they have the correct count.) My only answer
to all the questions about the situation is to fall back on the
DXCC rules which say that all these contacts count.

I really don't think the amateur radio community has wrapped its
mind around the fact that many of us move around the country a lot.

However, this comment tickled the thought that setting up remote
receivers could be something hams do regularly. I can imagine a
remote receiver at one son's house in Colorado, and another at
the other son's house in California.

These receivers might be useful for activities like the Elecraft
net, where frequently the QRO stations, which are the backbone
of the net, can't hear the QRP stations who try to check in. It
would be a fun project in station building.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 freezes

2021-06-07 Thread Bill Frantz
I travel with my computer and connect it to my K3 (upgraded)
every time I go on the air. The last time I started operating, I
noticed that my P3 did not know the frequency the K3 was using.
I then noticed that I hadn't plugged the USB connection between
the K3 and the computer into the computer. I plugged it in and
everything worked again.

I think this may have been because the K3 needs to be polled in
order to send the frequency data. (There is a menu option to
automatically send the frequency data. I am away from the radio
so I can't check how it is set on my K3.) Hooking the radio to
my computer let the logging program provide the polling.

other QRP radios. This setup worked quite well, if not a
conveniently as an internal tuner in a K3.

Then my wife, after watching me work QRP in CQP with marginal
antennas said, "Oh go out and get the 100W amp." The order went
out very quickly, before she could change her mind. I had some
matched antennas and they worked well at 100W and I reduced
power for the bands which needed the T1.

After hitting the T1 with 100W a couple of times -- it survived
and still works well -- I got the internal tuner in the K3. I'm
a happy camper.

I like digital modes and run both radios, the KX3 for portable

digital and SSB on the KX3 is a PITA compared with the K3. On
the KX3 I have to:

Unplug the microphone and plug in the computer sound card.
  Turn off the mic bias.
  Re-adjust the mic level.
  Turn on the VOX.

On the K3 I just have to turn on the VOX. All the cables stay in place.

On the KX3, I monitor the RX audio with a spliter cable feeding
headphones and my computer. (I don't generally monitor TX audio
with headphones on either radio.) I do tune RTTY via the
monitored audio.

through the CAT interface which probably means CAT1ASC commands although
the documentation doesn't say. I've used both the general interface and the
contest window, both just enough to believe they work.

I have run RUMlogNG for several years, including using it for CW
and RTTY contests. I have even hooked a protocol analyser up on
the RS-232 link between it and the radio to try to chase down a
problem. It has a very interesting approach to sending and
receiving CW and RTTY through the K3. It does both through the
CAT interface. To transmit, it uses KY and TB commands to keep
the radio from buffering more than 2 or 3 characters so the ESC
key will stop transmission promptly.

For example, to send AE6JV with the K3's response in [brackets]:

KY A;[KY0;]TB;[TB000;]
KY E6;[KY0;]TB;[TB200;]
KY J;[KY0;]TB;[TB200;]
KY V;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]
KY ;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]
KY
<04>;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]TB;[TB100;]TB;[TB000;]TB;TB000; etc.

I have not carefully traced the receive path.

The problem I was trying to track down is the failure to
correctly chain transmissions in RTTY mode. CW works fine. If,
for example, I press F4 twice to send my call sign twice, the
radio will transmit AE6JV E6JV, dropping the first character
from the second press of F4. I used my KX3 to monitor what was
actually being transmitted. I got lots of useful advice from
N6TV in running these tests.

If you're a RUMlog expert waiting for your K4 and want to discuss, feel
free to contact me directly.

I won't say I'm a RUMlog expert, and I'm waiting for the K4 kit,
but if I can help, please let me know.

application of a 40 watt tune, the tuner appears to find a
suitable solution but when the power is raised to over 100W,
the amplifier faults to a high SWR, some bands, but not always
repeatable. The antenna and feedline have been inspected and
all OK. If I change bands sometimes it works at higher powers
and sometimes not. Other times it cannot find a solution on
some bands and other bands are OK, low power or amplified. If I
cycle the power to the KAT500, it is OK for a while and then it
has trouble again. The problem appears intermittent. Wondering
if anyone has had this same problem. Thanks de dave WB7ELY

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Digital modes: proper ALC for full output power?

2021-03-04 Thread Bill Frantz

Hi Julia -

Running the Transmit Gain procedure (page 33 in my manual) is
the usual first thing to do when the power output seems "wanky".

The general recommendation for drive level from the computer is
4 bars with the 5th flashing. If the drive level is too low, the
output power will start off low and then build to the power
output setting on the radio. If the drive level is 4 bars with
the 5th flashing, the radio will start close to the power output setting.

If the drive level is too high, you will drive the radio into
using automatic level control which will produce a distorted
signal on the air.

If the output power is stablising at levels lower than the
setting, try the Transmit Gain calibration procedure.

The KX3 manual suggests aiming for no more than 3-4 bars of ALC indication
to prevent distortion, but if I do this, I don't always get full output
power.

Initially I chalked this up to the firmware reducing output power from
heat, but it's proportional: if I ask for 10 W, I get 7; if I ask for 5, I
get 3, and so on.

It also doesn't always happen!

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] An FT8 Radio- just dreaming

2021-02-22 Thread Bill Frantz
One of my favorite radios was a Small Wonders Labs PSK20. This
was a radio designed to only send and receive on the 20M PSK
subband (14.070-14.074). Coupled with a computer to run PSK
software it made a very effective travel radio, and I made many
QSOs with it.

In the modern age, a KX2 is about the same size, but covers
80M-10M and is basically a HF HT. Many of the JS8Call people are
using modern Raspberry Pis to run the software, and JS8Call uses
the same encode/decode/modulation as FT8. (It allows rag chewing.)

For myself, I could probably change the frequency on my PSK20 to
work on the 20M FT8 band, but it's not a high personal priority.

its control. Most of today's designs are not well enough
integrated and I think are hampered by preconceptions. Nor do
they take advantage of graphic user interfaces that are common
in say cell phones.  I think it could be one box with voice

an internal projector so that the screen can be projected onto
another surface making monitors optional? If it is going to be

Re: [Elecraft] Different focus

2021-01-25 Thread Bill Frantz
IEEE Binary Floating Point assumes (except in case of a very
small, de-normalized number), that the high order bit of the
mantissa is a one. With this assumption, it doesn't need to
actually represent the one in memory. So, it has 8 bits of
exponent, 1 bit of sign, and 24 bits of mantissa crammed into 32
bits. It should be able to handle the full precision of a 24 bit
AtoD converter.

Adding more ADC bits does not require more DSP horsepower. The DSP is 32 bit
floating point.

Well, that works up to 23-bits! (FP numbers have a 23-bit mantissa)

Not to pick on Bruce, but there have been many posts to this
thread with essentially the same thought.

However, none of them talk about what I see as one of the most
important performance characteristics, which is the user
interface (UI). How easy it the radio to use?

For me, I do a lot of digital modes. Here I want to monitor all
of the power output, SWR, and ALC. On my K3, I have to switch
between them. On the K4 I can have them all on the screen.

How easy is it to tune to a signal I see on the panadapter? On
the P3, I need to move the cursor (via a knob) to be on top of
the signal and press a button. Honestly, it's easier to turn the
big knob. On the K4 I touch the touch screen. (I hope this
screen is better at detecting my touch than my iPhone.)

There are probably a bunch of other examples too.

And, since I'm interested in remote operation, I think that will
be a lot easier with a K4.

And I haven't even mentioned TX or RX performance. But it's an
Elecraft, so I'm not worried.

A device that only disconnects the antenna fixes only part of

It may not be necessary to cover all the connections. Elecraft

Re: [Elecraft] Automatic lightning protection for radios, .... an off the wall idea

2021-01-18 Thread Bill Frantz
While serious lightning protection for structures and other
robust things must be done outside the building, I have heard
reports of K3S USB chips being fried from currents induced in
the USB cable attached to the radio, with the suggestion of
disconnecting the cable to protect the chip. I don't see how to
do this disconnect outside the building.

When I consider a direct strike on my shack's lighting rods, I
see massive currents flowing down the thick aluminum cables from
the rods to the grounding system. I see these currents inducing
currents in any wires in the house, including the USB cable. The
lightning rods are the first level of protection, but may not be
enough to protect sensitive electronic equipment. Remember, when
we work on these radios, we have a grounding wrist strap and a
conductive mat on the work surface etc.

[Elecraft] Automatic lightning protection for radios, an off the wall idea

2021-01-17 Thread Bill Frantz
I've been thinking about some kind of automatic lightning
protection for radios, specifically ones like the K3 and K4. The
idea is that when you turn the radio off, all the things that
are subject to damage are protected by disconnecting them from
the external world and shorting their inputs to ground.

This approach probably wouldn't protect against a direct hit to
one of the wires coming into the radio, which are most likely on
the antenna input and the power from a solar system. But I
understand that the most significant part of the problem is
voltage spikes introduced when the external wires act as
antennas and pick up nearby lightning strikes.

I'm not a hardware engineer, so I'm going to assume that relays
are used in this device. Some of the things I see this device
doing are:

USB connection: Elecraft tells us that blown USB chips are one
of the more common forms of lightning damage in the K3. There
are 4 wires in the USB interface, two of which carry power from
the external world. The relay(s) would float the USB wires and
ground the connections to the internal USB chip. Since power
from the external world is present when the radio is off, we
can't ground the power leads, although we can ground the power
input to the radio's USB chip.

Note that currently a computer attached to the K3 can see its
USB chip, even when the radio is turned off. This change would
mean that the computer would no longer see the radio over USB,
which might have annoying software effects.

A similar thing could happen to the antenna inputs.

Key/Paddle, microphone, headphones, RS232, etc. would be treated
the same way.

The AUXbus would be treated similarly, but anything that can be
turned on via the AUXbus would need special handling.

The 12V power input is needed to turn the radio on with the
power button. I don't know how often radios are damaged through
their 12V power input. This input may not need protection.
Otherwise, the relay that protects power and the switch to the
radio could be the only things powered when the radio is off. If
it can't be protected, it could be made easily field replaceable.

It would be neat if there's enough room inside a K4 to put this
kind of protection "under the covers".

Re: [Elecraft] Does a K4 need an external sound card for FT8?

In an ideal world, we would not have any analog audio in use for
digital modes. Analog RF to the ADC in the front end of the
radio. Digital through the "radio" to the digital path to the
computer to the digital processing for digital modes.

The K3S actually goes through a DtoA conversion and then a AtoD
again within the radio. Does the K4 also do this?

For audio, of course, somewhere we need to do DtoA conversion.

Re: [Elecraft] External sound card advice needed to attach to, K3

I helped teach a number of ham crams for the our local
ARES/RACES group. We always included information about Ohm's
law, how to cut a 1/2 wave dipole, and operating procedures.
They're all on the tech test, and for many students it's a lot
easier to learn how to figure out the answer than it is to
remember which multiple-guess is correct.

Quick example: There is a question about how long a 1/4 wave
antenna is for 2M. We tell them that 40" is a good enough
conversion for a meter, so 2M is 80" and 1/4 or 80" is 20". The
correct answer on the test is 19" but the other 3 answers are
way wrong, so picking the closest answer works. We even get to
mention that the velocity of light in a wire is slower than it
is in free space, so 19" is the right answer.

What I find with students is that many are completely at sea
about how ham radio works in the practical sense of picking up a
microphone and making a contact. There's nothing like just doing it.

We would run a 2nd class a month after the ham cram and license
test. We would tell the students to bring their new radios and
we would get the local repeaters programmed into them. We would
then coach them in making some contacts with each other.

As weeks went by, we would encourage them to act as net control
for our weekly net, and then to act as net control for the
county net when it was our group's turn.

Again, like any student, spoon feed them at a rate such that
they can learn. It takes a lot of Elmering to make a ham.

I know the public service/emcom people have pushed on this
issue, because a fair number of public service events involve
providing communication support for parades, and parades have
bands, and bands are quite loud and overcome even a noise
canceling microphone. I think there has even been an official
ruling that these incidental sounds, that come along for the
ride with legal communication, won't get you a notice from the FCC.

Now transmitting voice in the CW bands is a different story. For
starts, it's not incidental to legal communication.
