[Elecraft] An observation.

2007-06-05 Thread Bill Scovell
Some of the posts have been a little 'heavy' lately --- may I steal a little
bandwidth to lighten the scene with a gem from Rudyard Kipling, a cautionary
tale for us all before we hit the 'key', 'paddle' or 'send button'.

A Code of Morals

Now Jones had left his new-wed bride to keep his house in order,
And hied away to the Hurrum Hills above the Afghan border,
To sit on a rock with a heliograph; but ere he left he taught
His wife the working of the Code that sets the miles at naught.

And Love had made him very sage, as Nature made her fair;
So Cupid and Apollo linked , per heliograph, the pair.
At dawn, across the Hurrum Hills, he flashed her counsel wise --
At e'en, the dying sunset bore her busband's homilies.

He warned her 'gainst seductive youths in scarlet clad and gold,
As much as 'gainst the blandishments paternal of the old;
But kept his gravest warnings for (hereby the ditty hangs)
That snowy-haired Lothario, Lieutenant-General Bangs.

'Twas General Bangs, with Aide and Staff, who tittupped on the way,
When they beheld a heliograph tempestuously at play.
They thought of Border risings, and of stations sacked and burnt --
So stopped to take the message down -- and this is whay they learnt --

Dash dot dot, dot, dot dash, dot dash dot twice. The General swore.
Was ever General Officer addressed as 'dear' before?
'My Love,' i' faith! 'My Duck,' Gadzooks! 'My darling popsy-wop!'
Spirit of great Lord Wolseley, who is on that mountaintop?

The artless Aide-de-camp was mute; the gilded Staff were still,
As, dumb with pent-up mirth, they booked that message from the hill;
For clear as summer lightning-flare, the husband's warning ran: --
Don't dance or ride with General Bangs -- a most immoral man.

[At dawn, across the Hurrum Hills, he flashed her counsel wise --
But, howsoever Love be blind, the world at large hath eyes.]
With damnatory dot and dash he heliographed his wife
Some interesting details of the General's private life.

The artless Aide-de-camp was mute, the shining Staff were still,
And red and ever redder grew the General's shaven gill.
And this is what he said at last (his feelings matter not): --
I think we've tapped a private line. Hi! Threes about there! Trot!

All honour unto Bangs, for ne'er did Jones thereafter know
By word or act official who read off that helio.
But the tale is on the Frontier, and from Michni to Mooiltan/i
They know the worthy General as that most immoral man.

Rudyard Kipling

[Elecraft] More K3 musings

2007-05-09 Thread Bill Scovell

Well, what a couple of weeks it has been!
Found out that I have 'roofing filters' that I didn't know I had.
Absolutely confirmed my aversion to 'contesting' --- much prefer to paint
and watch it dry.
So what is there for me --- well, in the short term, I've just ordered a a
Z100 from Jack Smith to put on top of the K2 to give me confidence that I'm
making life as easy as possible for the other fellow.
Will I buy a K3? Of course! and Why? because I want to hear KPH again before
I pull the big switch --- and what will I buy? K3/10, KBPF3 and wait for the
variable filters --- To each his own, and all kudos to the Aptos team for
making it possible.

I
can't get that last little bit of perfection by selecting the best

for the job.

I measure each resistor and capacitor before mounting them on the circuit

I
have more than one of a certain value component, and if they have
slightly
different values, yet still within the tolerance, then perhaps a

even
some parts of the circuitry will benefit a tiny bit from matched
components.

Yes, I know that this is taking things to the extreme, but that is my

So, can anyone think of any circuits of the K2 that would benefit in even

one

that is near the upper or lower tolerance, or visa versa?

[Elecraft] T1 application

2005-06-24 Thread Bill Scovell
Beset with antenna restrictions I am presently constructing a cosy little
kennel to house my T1 at the base of a 20 foot flagpole and I would like to
feed some DC on the coax to actuate a relay to remotely initiate the tuning
process.
My question relates to the necessary isolating capacitors --- whilst I am
currently qrp I would like to provide for 100W capability --- now, if my
calculations are correct, to get below 1 ohm reactance at 1.8 MHz requires a
capacitor around 0.1ufd and to support 100W operation in a matched condition
(50 ohm line) a voltage rating around 70V and current 1.414A --- the question
is:- Where do I find such a non-inductive capacitor or rather two of 'em?
Found a couple of old large micas (Cornell-Dubilier) in the junk box which I
think last saw service in WW2, I am sure they would rate well but the highest
capacity was only .005ufd.

This is probably a question that Ron could answer before I trouble Sott or

The one 20pF capacitor supplied with my T1 kit is a small NPO (black edge)

the're getting smaller.
This part is for C2 which is spec'd at 500V --- should this part carry a

[Elecraft] T1 and a large measure of embarrassment.

2005-04-03 Thread Bill Scovell
Greetings from down-under,
I believe it may make me feel a little
better if I share this embarrassment with the group.
My T1 kit which was shipped on March 21 arrived a few days ago and yielded the
usual perfect inventory, but of course the shipment preceded the Rev. A-1
errata (March 29) so I was short of two 1 watt 51 ohm resistors and an FT47-43
toroid which knowing the Elecraft service ethic are probably on their way to me
now, however, carefully reading the assembly manual I saw that there were two
components that could be loaded before the first 51 ohm was required namely the
two female BNC connectors so I thought I would get started.
I carefully aligned the connectors per the instructions and did a creditable
soldering job on both --- on the WRONG SIDE of the board --- shock! horror! and
a large measure of embarrassment.
I don't have any sophisticated de-soldering equipment and promptly decided that
a new board must of necessity be the solution, so a quick Email to Scott and
Brian was sent, but minutes after doing this a long dormant adventurous streak
within me manifested itself and kept saying 'there must be a way, there must'
and there was!
It took a board vice, two soldering irons (one in each hand) and the XYL
suitably protected with heat proof gloves to perform the extraction and the
task was accomplished --- the through plating undamaged and the board still
looking pristine --- quite proud of myself, oops ourselves, and the earlier
embarrassment just a little bit diminished.
Another Email to Scott and Brian cancelling the earlier one, and now I'm just
waiting on two 1 watt 51 ohm resistors because I found a spare toroid in the
junk box.

Cheers from Bill Scovell / VK4SQ

[Elecraft] K2 a problem solved

2005-02-02 Thread Bill Scovell
A couple of weeks back I sought help for a problem encountered at the first
stage of 40 Meter Transmitter alignment (Page 75).
The problem was uncontrollable output power.
Specifically:-
Holding 'Tune' after requesting 2.0W output yielded a 'Hi
Current' display and an indicated power of 19.1W.

Don / W3FPR came to my assistance explaining how the K2 compares requested
power with detected power to develope the required signals to adjust the drive
to get the output power to the requested level. With Don's guidance we explored
all the circuitry associated with this process but found everything to be OK
which led Don to the conclusion that the high output was resultinfg from
spurious oscillation.

At this juncture Gary took over and the first issue was to determine whether
the oscillation was inherent in the transmitter chain itself or a fault in the
t-r switching circuitry. The answer to this question was provided by removing
link W1, which immediately stopped the oscillation --- almost certainly the
problem lay in the t-r circuitry --- a systematic 'trouble shoot' around
Control Board Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 and RF Board Q23 established that Q4 (2N7000) was
the culprit.

Tiresome though it was for a while, the nice part of this exercise was that by
taking it slowly and getting good advice from Don and Gary I was able to
achieve a result without any unnecessary 'invasive surgery' --- I only had to
'pull' one component, the faulty one --- left to my own devices I don't think
the boards would have still looked as attractive as they do.

A final word --- this is the second 2N7000 that has brought me undone on this
build --- earlier on Q5 deprived me of sidetone for a while, obviously these
mosfets are rather fragile devices --- whilst I did not use a mat during the
build I did diligently wear a wrist band whilst assembling sensitive devices
although at the time I thought that with our relative humidity being quite high
that this was probably 'guilding the lily' --- I shall be more circumspect in
the future.

With continuing appreciation of this reflector and particular thanks to Don and
Gary I''ll stop chewing up bandwidth.

[Elecraft] K2

2005-01-20 Thread Bill Scovell
After an interrupted build K2 / 4313 nearing completion but have run into
trouble at the first stage of 40-Meter Transmitter Alignment (Page 75).
Elecraft Dummy Load connected.
Frequency set to display 7100 KHz
Power Output set to 2.0W
Holding 'Tune' there is a momentary burst of side-tone then in turn the display
shows:-
   1) Elecraft
   2) 2.04P 1.09
   3) 7100 KHz
But no evidence of transmit power.
Tapping display shows 13.5 / 0.22.
Guess I've done something stupid --- any suggestion appreciated.

Hi Jim,

1)As you repeatedly press the PRE/ATT button the annunciator moves predictably
between PRE --- ATT --- and extinguishment, so do not think that solder bridge
is the problem, however, if for example you switch off when the annunciator is
indicating ATT or is extinguished when you switch on againthe annunciator is
always indicating PRE.

2) Have explored the alternative side tone sources but to no avail --- Still

[Elecraft] K2 Inventory 'problem'

2004-07-05 Thread Bill Scovell
They say that confession is good for the soul so perhaps I should detail my
foolish mistake.
I looked at the RFa bag bandolier, not too closely it turns out, and decided
that it wasn't carrying any 1/2 watt resistors. Not being able to find any
loose ones I counted up the number of resistors required for the RF board and
compared this to the number of R's on the bandolier ---two short!!! but I had
overlooked R115 and R116.
After a 'heads up' (I hope I'm using that term correctly) from Don Wilhelm I
looked again at the bandolier which, of course, was loaded with two 1/2 watts
in their ordained position.
I should not have been so quick to doubt Elecraft's reliability. My only worry
now is that the 'Mojo Fairy' might punish me for this --- perhaps if I record
my thanks to Christine, Walter, Judy and Somarian for a 100% perfect pack I
shall be forgiven.

Bill / VK4SQ

p.s. I didn't suffer your headache --- I'm the proud possessor of an AADE L/C
Meter --- outside of Elecraft the best $100 I ever spent.

Just completing inventory check for my second K2 (#4313)all well except can't
find R50 and R58 (both 1/2 watt so not on the bandolier) are these normally
loose in the RFb bag? or do they lurk in some other spot and I've had a senior

but R50 is 1.5 Ohms and low values not easy to come by here.
