Be aware that bluetooth audio is useless for CW work. There's too much
latency to use it with a paddle. The sidetone you hear in the bluetooth
headset is out of sync with the keying.

Re: [Elecraft] Cool your KX3 (fredem)

2014-05-02 Thread Dave G.
FWIW... I thought I'd mention this..

I bought my KX3 heat sink from Fred Meier VE7FM a while ago.
It is a very well machined precision product and fits beautifully,
everything lined up perfectly - and it took me less than 10 minutes to
install.
I chose the micro bead blasted finish to increase the effective
radiating area. (at least that's what I figured - I'm probably wrong!)

It weighs about 8oz and I measured/calculated that it had a total
dissipating area of just over 42 sq ins.

The transaction was very easy and the delivery was very fast.

I posted the list with my before and after results of temperatures
reached for key-down continuous output transmissions at various power
levels for a 5 minute duration at each power level into a dummy load.

I had no temp induced shutdowns during my tests with that heat sink fitted..
I've been using it for several months now with no problems.

If you look in the pictures folder, under my callsign, you can see
before and after images of it fitted to my KX3
I also posted the before and after indicated temps to the list (a while back!)

I do know that Fred is willing and able to ship worldwide from Canada,
in fact, to anywhere in the world that has PayPal or a bank draft.
For my order I used PayPal.

Usual Disclaimer: I have no financial or other interests in Fred's
products other than being a very satisfied customer.

[Elecraft] KX1 Hiss -- question.

2014-04-07 Thread Dave G.
Yes.. I know this is not K3/KX3 related but I still use my KX1. Love it !.
But I don't like the audio hiss when using the wider filter bandwidth.

I did some reading of the LM386 data sheet..

Question: If I change C22 from a 0.01 to a 0.02, will that decrease
the upper end of the LM386 filtering?

Alternatively; Has anyone done any mode to improve this?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX1 changed in 5 years?

2014-03-26 Thread Dave G.
Bob,

I had #13 (Beta tester!)
IIRC. the only major change was the number of turns on one of the
toroids if you're into 80M

From the KXB3080 Errata notes:
Your KX1 must have an 18-turn inductor installed at L3 before using
it on 80 meters. If L3 in your KX1 has only 6 turns, see “KX1
Builder’s Alert, Modifying Final Amplifier Choke L3”for instructions
on how to rewind the inductor.

From: cockpit...@aol.com
I have a lead on a 5 year old KX1 and was wondering if they've changed much
in 5 years. I'm fine with little mods and tweaks but want to make
sure it isn't dramatically different from the new ones. Have they changed
much in 5 years?

[Elecraft] KX-1 Ferrite question - background info for the request..

2008-09-12 Thread Dave G.
For those that might be ibnterested

FWIW - Using a KX-1+KXAT1, I'm trying to find a way to adapt the
(standard?)
~26ft wire with 16ft counterpoise to work on 3.55Mhz...

Here's what I've been thinking...

I was initially considering modding the internal KAT1 toroids. The trick
there would be to get the three toroids to cover the whole KX-1 range.. the
probable outcome would not being able to get below an SWRof 2:1 or 3:1
on many frequencies with the existing antennae
.
But I remember (when I was G3UTY) being mobile in London, UK on
160M with 10W. We used center-loaded
8ft whips. Very large inefficient coils but we still managed to work the
european continent...

So here's the situation, as I see it, looking at efficiensy and current/voltage
distribution; and bearing in mind that, typically, most /P is done with 25-
40ft of wire.

1) End loading with L+C is probably out due to exremely high voltages and
also that's the end needed to hang the wire in the trees/fishing rod/etc... it
is
still a possibilty.

2) Center loading with L only would be the next best. Middle range voltages
and current but it would mean hanging a small weight in the middle of a
length of (usually) very light wire. Might not be a practical solution..

3) Bottom loading which, in this case, is at the KX1 BNC connector
This gives the L minimum voltage with high current but also has the lowest
radiation efficiency. Hanging an extra bit of weight on the BNC connector
might not be such a good idea! So perhaps a short length of RG174 which
connects to the L (or an LC) circuit would be the best idea but /P operators
might
not appreciate carring an extra bit of wire in their Go pack!

4) Adding a coil to the counterpoise... in effect making the KX-1 directly
feeding an OCF needs more thought ;^-|

Any opinions?? Thoughts? Suggestion??
Ooops, better careful answering the latter Grin

Type 43 Material at that frequency would make an excellent

[Elecraft] Re: KX1 Q6 question....

2008-07-31 Thread Dave G.
Don,

Thanks for the reply..

The 2SC5739 does seem to have higher gain at higher frequencies than
the 2SC2166, so your 20 meter output may improve if you change it,
but I can offer no guarantees on that
The plastic tab safety factor was obvious but, of course, I was wondering if
there was an
improvement in the upper frequency efficiency.

Should you make the change and find your power output is above 4 watts,
reduce the setting of R1 to the 4 watt level. The components in the KX1 PA
output stage can be stressed at power levels much in excess of 4 watts.
I will definitely keep tha in mind... on the surface it looks like a simple
swap --- the thing to
decide is if there is a real noticeable performance improvement...

Thanks again...

[Elecraft] Tin whiskers...

2008-04-06 Thread Dave G.
If you watch the NASA videos, you will notice that the whiskers move, flex
and break very easily under slight air movements, subsequently the chosen
removal method was very simple .

I would suspect that a regular cleaning regime, using a can of compressed
air in one hand and a small vacuum cleaner (a la keyboard cleaner type) in
the other, should keep the infestation down.

Due to my local environment, a lot of airborne fine silica dust and cat dander,
cleaning my electronic appliances using the above method is a regular
occurrence.

[Elecraft] Cost of Fully loaded K3

2008-03-18 Thread Dave G.
After reading this...

You could buy 2 fully K3s outfitted for SO2R for less than one IC-7700

I started wondering just how much a FULLY loaded K3 would cost...
Stuffing a K3 with EVERYTHING(!) including 10 top-of-the-line roofing
filters in Kit-form I came up with $4469.65 + shipping
Or about $2,000 less than one IC-7700
Both of which are way beyond my budget...
But a basic K3/10 with a KXV3 suits me just fine ;-))

Thinks...I wonder if the K2's internal battery would fit inside the K3??

The difference between 100% power output and 90% power output equates

My question is:- can todays' highly advanced rigs, with their tailored AGC

detectable difference in audio output??

Omni VII + ATU = $2950 approx
K3/100 +ATU+KBPF3+3 filters +Microphone = $2950 approx.

Can we drop the price comparison thread now, please??

[Elecraft] K3 Broadcast Band Performance

2008-03-11 Thread Dave G.
Mike,

I tuned my new K3 to 640 KHz to listen to a local AM radio station.
I was connected to my 40M inverted Vee.

By any chance, is the KA3 still in cicuit and still tuned to 40M??

I usually forget to take the ATU out of the circuit for BC band makes a
big difference

1) Why is it shown as 'dashed'?
2) Does this connection exist??
3) Does this mean that AuxRF gets connected permanently to relay K3 in the

[Elecraft] Re: RX Parameters for Contestors

2008-03-06 Thread Dave G.
Here is how I see it from a non-contester, non-dx-er point of view...
Sun-Spots are on the increase.
Conditions are improving.
Signals *will* get stronger and more of them.
So my criteria basically are:-
a) If the noise increases when I connect my antenna, then the receiver
sensitivity is good enough for me.
b) if my AGC is not 'pumped, by another signal 2-5 Khz away, then the
selectivity is good enough for me.
lastly, and MOST important...
c) if the noise reduction circuitry can dramatically reduce the man-made
and atmospheric noise to where I can here a weak signal without getting a
headache, then I'm happy...

Perhaps my views might change if I ever get involved in contesting or
serious DX'ing... we]ll see 8^))

Thanks for the bandwidth...

My vote is for the KX-1 would be for a a denoiser only...
Why??

- the KX-1 variable crystal filtering is more than adequate
But I have now way of digging through the local QRN...

I can't commetn on the K1 don't have one ;-\

[Elecraft] KX-1 AGC action --- question

[Elecraft] Re:KX-1 and 15M

2007-11-25 Thread Dave G.
Hi Bruce,

I was fortunate enough to be one of the KX-1 Beta testers. So I am well
aware of the DDS clock limitations, and of the two LPF's in the KX-1 with
knee's. just allowing 20M operation.

But my nudge, nuidge, wink, wink was directed - with my tongue firmly in
my cheek- at the possibility (no matter how remote) of Elecraft, after the K3
hiatus has settled down, considering a companion to the KX-1.
Perhaps a KX-2(?) with a similar form factor, power and options, covering
20,17, 15 and 10 meters or better still 17,15,10 and 6 Meters..
8 bands with two rigs... one in each pocket, with most of our home-brew
accessories capable of being used with both...

WIth the upswing in the Sunspot cycle the next decase will be fantastic for
QRP operation..

Anyway I can dream, can't I???

They also have a 5-band set-up

Or, I have a set ot five (in White) for 10,15, 20, 40, 80 that I haven't

I *was* considering Mobile but the Honda Civic Hybrid is not very easy to do an

Thanks for the reply

I'm also assuming that leaving the 'ring' connection open will not cause a
problem with the MCU --- I had a slight concern that it might leave pin 24 in
an indeterminate state when transmitting...

[Elecraft] Difference between ATU's ???

2007-05-05 Thread Dave G.
Looking at the Pricing Sheet

What is the difference between;
Internal ATU w/2nd Ant. Jack @ $259, and
100-W Internal ATU, Installed @ $289...

Does that imply that the ATU w/@nd Ant will not handle 100W??

Ken,

Thank you. I was still referring to the Spread Sheet put up by
wa5znu...

If you check the Elecraft web site order form, you will find that they
 fixed that.

[Elecraft] K3 Battery ??

2007-05-03 Thread Dave G.
Another one of my idle thoughts...
Would there be enough room in the space normally occupied by the 100W
option to accommodate a battery such as that used in the K2???

Portable QRP/ QRPp...??

[Elecraft] Re: Competition for Elecraft???

2005-11-02 Thread Dave G.
Loyalty is a great thing and is to be admired, but to keep
things in comparative and fair perspective...

A fully loaded K2/100 with K2DSP and the external tuner is
$1662 in kit form.

And not forgetting that the K2 does NOT have a built in
expandable PC with a USB I/O port...flash upgradeable.

As for being semi-built... we have a fair number of gentlemen
who will, and do, build K2's for users..

I would think the Sienna is aimed at a different market than
the traditional Elecraft'er.. possibly the digitally inclined
Ham ??

I have now donned my asbestos suit :^\
