Re: [Elecraft] Listings out of control

2012-03-30 Thread Dave Larson
I use Mozilla Thunderbird for my email program. It is easy to setup
message filters to delete any message subject that contains things I'm
not interested in. I have a K3 and I'm not interested in any message
subject that contains K2, K1, KX1, and so on. Those messages and many
other topics are automatically deleted before I see them. This brings
down the message count considerably.

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Digital Signals on 20M

For the past several days I have been seeing a couple of powerful digital
signals, S9+, between 14.018 to 14.032MHz. They seem to be comprised of 4
or 5 discrete frequencies rapidly moving around in a bandwidth of about
2Khz. When working with a narrow filter it is possible to work through
them, with difficulty. With a wide filter, 2.8KHz set to the center of
their bandwidth it sounds like a group of castanets clicking away with
slightly different tones. I might have just discounted them but for the
fact that I have just recently gotten a poor man's panadapter using a
Rockmite and Z1 amp from Clifton Labs with the Rocky software
 monitoring
my K3's IF output. These two signals have been here every time I get on
 20M
and are quite impressive in the amount of bandwidth they occupy. I have
 not
seen this on any other band. Forgive my ignorance of digital modes, but I
just don't recall hearing this sort of signal before. Can anyone let me
 know what this might be?

I am running K3 beta 2.34 / 1.89 and I am unable to save a K3
configuration.

I receive the following save configuration error:

Configuration was not saved.
The configuration file is incomplete, and man not be used for restore.

Is this a bug or is there something I need to do to make it work?

My K3 is a super CW rig and a poor SSB rig. at least to this date

1. AGC blasts from weak to strong sig... does not smooth out the audio
enuf.

Vy short tone sigs pierce my eardrums.
No excuse for this problem.
A fix, pse???

2. Tighter than 2.20 and the SSB audio really degrades.
This is either a great filter system or my earlier rigs'
(Mk 5 etc.) nice 1.8 INRAD filters were not that sharp.
Below 2.00 on ssb and the voices lose too much of
their intelligibility, sad to say, because I need
1.8, or so, to kill the guy 2 kc above.

3. Many ssb sigs sound harsh and too sharp even
at 2.8, especially when 5 or more are calling at
the same time. Adding bass with the cut knob helps some.
Using Heil ProSet Plus.

4. NR at any setting degrades weaker ssb sigs beyond
usefulness. Why is this?

And, the temporary info that appears BRIEFLY in the
vfo B window is too brief for me.
A fix, pse

I gotta get my shack computer on line agn to get updates. In my
appliance op uses to date, K3 is not sliced bread on ssb.

Hi Dave,

I'm interested to know if you were using speakers or a boom/headset. The
later DSP radios, IC775 etc when I operated VOX I got a lot of false
trips,

but I don't use headsets. The best vox I've ever used was in the FT1000
with the vox modified for a certain voice range. Never false tripped.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: Translation - 2nd RX

2008-01-18 Thread Dave Larson
2 days ago I received the invoice for my K3. Lisa, without my asking,
applied my full payment for the 2nd rx to the K3. I now have the 2nd rx on
backorder with none of my money tied up in it.
I feel Elecraft handled this case properly. I am as disappointed as anyone
that the 2nd rx may be a long way off. Elecraft could have shipped a lower
quality 2nd rx and everything would have been just fine until we started to
use it and found that it was inferior to the main rx. Doing so would have
damaged Elecraft's reputation long term.
I am sure it was a very hard and disappointing decision to have to return to
the drawing board. Elecraft did the right thing in my opinion and when it is
all over, their fine reputation that they have had in the past will be
maintained.

I, for one, based my purchase decision greatly on this

and understandable
but discovering that this option which is touted as a
big-time feature
but is really no where near ready is confidence
deflating.

I have been personally patient waiting for my K3 (as
are many others)
and occasionally publicly supportive on this list of
the delays that
Elecraft has been experiencing. Now we discover that a
MAJOR K3 feature

is no where near production ready, if even designed at
this time. Come
on

I have to agree with Dave here. It's the same
situation here. The delays are understandable. Even a
SHORT, further delay with the KRX3, was accepable. Now
it's listed merely as DELAYED. What does that really
mean? If I recall correctly, the KRX3 2nd receiver
option has been on the Elecraft info/order sheet, with
no mention of being available in the future, at any
time since its annoucement. All of the info sheets I
have from Dayton show the KRX3 as being like any other
option...such as filters. This option was certainly a
deciding factor in ordering a K3. It wasn't until
quite a few orders were taken that it was suddenly
listed with a later shipping date that continues, even
now, to slip. ( A big slip apparently, since now there
isn't even a projected date ) I was never informed
when placing my order on May 25th that the KRX3 would
not be available with the rest of my order. Was anyone
else who ordered before the KRX3 delay was posted
notified that the it would not be immediately
available? My 50% deposit was calculated with the KRX3
option included. It would be nice to know exactly
what's going on here. If it is, as Wayne said, that
they are redesigning for a valid reason, then there is
no way the KRX3 should have been listed as an
available option from Day 1.

I was thinking about having my deposit applied to a K2
and waiting until who knows when for the 2nd
production run to be shipped. Now, with the KRX3 news,
I'm not sure what direction to go. It has made me
decide to scrap the K2 idea. Perhaps an Orion II or an
Omni VII for now and continue to wait and see on the
K3. I could probably have either Ten-Tec within a week
or so. Then, when the K3 comes along, I can do my own
side-by-side.

And, in reading a few of the latest list postings,
there appears to be some issues with using the K3
being used in a certain manner before the KRX3 is
available. ie. VFO A/B things. To me, having one band
on VFO A and another on VFO B is perfectly normal and
should not be an issue.

It does seem that the K3 was actually announced and
released a bit before it was ready for Prime Time.
That was probably driven by the Visalia and Dayton
dates which, obviously, would not be slipped.

73,
Dave N8AG

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or SDR-5000?

2007-12-22 Thread Dave Larson

Hi Ross,

I own a SDR-1000 for just over a year now. Last May I sold my K2 and
ordered a yet to be delivered K3. Until the various tests have been
published by the ARRL and Mr. Sherwood, I would say the K3 vs. SDR-5000 are
a close match. The K3 will cost less than the SDR-5000 when you add the cost
of the required high powered computer to the cost of the SDR-5000. The K3
needs no computer to operate. The SDR-1000/5000 have a panadapter display
with the ability to tune in any signal with just a click of a mouse. No big
deal unless you become used to it as I have. When software becomes
available to mouse click tune the K3 with some sort of panadapter display,
My SDR-1000 will be up for sale and a second K3 will be ordered. Until
then, I will keep it along with my yet to be delivered K3 and will use which
ever rig is the right one for a given situation.
