Re: [Elecraft] KIOB3B for K3

2020-08-01 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Hi Bill, yes, it’s one of the first 200 that people pre-ordered and waited
nearly a year for, then built themselves (I liked Elecraft, but must say I
thought the K2 a little long in the tooth, I was about to buy an FT-2000 - had
the money and everything, then Elecraft announced the K3 - well I can tell you,
it didn’t take more than 5 mins to get an order off). Never regretted it and
love the Elecraft company and service AND the community. Have a P3 (again
preorder) and lots of other products.

I have no problem inside the rig etc (it’s quite packed in there now), just
haven’t upgraded the firmware for a while. I think I’ll be fine - just waiting
for the weather to change - it’s a ‘wet day’ type thing.

Thanks for replying and the ‘good luck’.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Latest on the new home for my K3...

2020-04-22 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Yes, I’d like to know to and the source of the cable trays.
It’s very neat and professional.

Mind you, it seems to me, that lots of cool stuff is not available from UK
suppliers :-(

73 de David, M0XDF

This story concerns four people – Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody
would do it.
Anybody could have done it but in the end Nobody did it.
Everybody got very angry over this because it really was Somebody’s job.
Everybody thought Somebody would do it, but Nobody realised that Anybody
wouldn’t do it
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody had asked
Anybody.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility vs macOS Catalina

2020-04-19 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Sorry, if someone mentioned this, but the original KUSB uses a Prolific chipset.
That’s always been temperamental. Plugable.com have drivers for 10.15.3 but you
have to buy them and I haven’t tried them.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO3BUPKT_KIO3B Upgrade Kit for K3

2020-04-14 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Brilliant, Thank you Don.
Just ordered one. I was a bit concerned that I wouldn’t be able to get one now
and having not used the K3 in the shack for a bit, but performed an upgrade on
my Mac OS, knew I would have trouble with my original KUSB, so wanted to switch
to a USB interface.
Happy Days…

Re: [Elecraft] XV Transverter: what can it do?

2019-12-11 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Not true Jim, a XV144 & 432 + a modified XV50 (to 70) lets me use the K3 for
those bands and it’s a darn site better than a number of other commercial rigs
on those bands.
Plus with limited shack space, it’s all in one rig.

Re: [Elecraft] will utility programs run on Apple Ipad os ?

2019-11-08 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Bill, USB is possible, if you buy the Apple adapters - you need the lighting to
the old style (30 pin) connector and then the SD card reader, which comes with
a USB adapter, which both have 30 pin connectors.

It is (or was) then possible to run some apps to control rigs, but I don’t know
if a Elecraft compatible protocol is available.

Nick, in the UK, /QRP is NOT a valid suffix, so we do hear quite a few ops
using it (and I would respond to them), but you shouldn’t hear one of us using
it.

[Elecraft] Another W2 question - 13.6v DC on coax

Hi again, if I were to feed 13.6v DC on my coax via a bias-tee would that

The preamp at the top of the mast will take the DC off, but I’d prefer to put
the sensor before the preamp if possible.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Pole connectors

2015-02-17 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
PowerPoles are not fragile, when correctly assembled/soldered. I think there is
an issue, either with your assembly to the lead or possibly with the units
mounted on the PCB in the K3 (it has been known to be in the K3).

Although I crimp all mine (well worth getting the West Mountain Radio Deluxe
crimp tool if your going to use a lot of APPs) I have to use a reasonable force
to separate them. At least as much as you'd use to separate a molex (ignoring
the clips of course). They will not separate by accident. The main issue with
soldering is solder running out the 'pot' onto the blade and preventing a good
wipe-fit when plugged together.

You can take the contact out of the housing to check it, but it requires a bit
of care. You need a very small screwdriver (watch-makers), insert it under the
blade at the front and lift, so the blade comes clear of the spring steel that
is under the blade. Then pull the lead from the back and it should come apart
with minor force.
See
http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Public%20Service/TrainingModules/Technical/Anderson%20powerpole.pdf
 for instructions and good pics.

There is a tool available to do this (see Quicksilver Radio -
http://qsradio.com/Powerpole%20Insertion%20Tool.jpg).

well. I would make sure that any HW mods published after the one you're

particularly if your needs are somewhat esoteric like EME and the like. Load

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Powerpole Replacement

2013-12-09 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Hi Jeff, I can see others have said the same thing, but I'll add my 2p worth -
it's your APP assembly that is the problem. Not likely to be the K3 end (but
possible), it's the cable end and there is one major cause:

The contacts have not been pushed completely home during assembly.

If the contacts have been soldered, it's possible the solder has spread across
the contact in such a way as to prevent the contact being pushed completely
home.

Never had a problem with the cable pulling out of the K3s APPs and not had to
secure it in any way.

I have been using APPs for ALL my 12v gear for 6 years now, with no problems
at all - all contacts are crimped, not soldered (once you've decided to go the
APP route, buy a really good crimp tool). I replaced the intermittent molex
connector on my FT-857 with APPs and stopped all the problems with the rig
cutting out use. That rig was moved from a base rig to a portable rig and back
again every week and I've never had a problem with the APPs.

Why do I want to replace them you ask?
Well, because my K3 gets around and more often than not sits on a wobbly
table whilst I'm out in the scrub or occasionally even sits in my lap whilst
 I'm operating.
The powerpoles has once again raised their ugly heads and keep disconnecting
or not making proper contact and I'm fed up with them.
I just want a connector that I can plug in and it will stay there, sadly that
has not been the case with either genuine Anderson powerpoles or all the
 different brands of knock-offs.

Best of all is to avoid that design of connector completely, and change

Re: [Elecraft] Power for P3.

You could build a relay box, fed from the Aux out and feed the PR6 the P3
from that, the power for the relay box would need to come from the same PSU
that is powering the K3 or a different PSU - but turning the K3 on would power
up the other units

I slipped a thumb drive into the Keyboard socket on the SVGA board and then
located some new items on the SVGA sub menu of the P3. By pressing the
Select knob for the menu item SVGA Ubmp it loaded a bitmap image of the
 SVGA
screen onto the thumb drive. It included decoded text that I had at the
bottom of the screen. The image size was 1282KB for my 1280 x 1024 monitor

You might want to attach a pull string to your thumb drive. It's close
proximity to the SVGA connector and the serial connector made it tough to
get a good grip for thumb drive extraction.
