[Elecraft] Items you think you can depend on
Everyone, Over time we can grow complacent on many service items such as electrical power, water and other services over time. Well that can be concerning as many hidden changes can result in damage to your home and equipment. Late late night I came in to my den and was closing down my ham station when I notice my fault light on my KPA500 linear was on. I powered it down and retired for the evening. This morning I powered up the linear (KPA500) and at once I got a fault light and had a high voltage alert. I powered down the linear and checked my input line voltage. It was 137 volts RMS! To be sure it wasn't my imagination I rechecked the voltage with a different meter with the same result. In checking the 220 volt outlet I measured 274 volts! My linear is set up for 220 volts operation and it was getting over 90 volts HV. I alerted the neighbors and cut the main breaker to the house. I then called the power company's service number and reported the problem. A short time later they called me back and reported that a regulator in the local sub station had "Stuck" and was reset. In rechecking my line voltage it was 118 volts on the low side and 236 volts on the high side. In the 12 years we have been at this qth we found that our town's locally run power company has been very reliable but this experience showed me that it is not a bad idea to check your line voltage every once in a while. 73 -- Dave Robertson KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX2
Last week at the Lobstercon hamfest in Brunswick Maine. I had an opportunity to pit my KX3 against a new KX2. As far as performance they seem to be identical. We were using a 250 foot end fed random wire and running and running the rigs off of both internal and external batteries. The performance of both the KX2 and KX3 were identical as much as we could determine. I had no problem operating the KX2's front panel controls other then a small learning curve when first using the rig. The KX2 seems to perform very well and it's internal battery really runs the rig well. I don't think I will get the KX2 anytime soon but it is a great rig. -- Dave Robertson KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 Dead
Martin. I am not sure when Elecraft correct the front panel connector problem but your K3 may have some tin plated plugs on the main RF board that plugs into the DSB board in the front panel Remove the K3 front panel assembly and check the plug on the RF board ( the one that is long with many pins ) and see if it is gold plated or not. There is a smaller connector that will be in line with the larger one that would also be tin plated. [Elecraft] KXPA100 Keying Mod
Everyone. I had an interesting experience recently. I have a KX3 and KXPA100 ( #519 ) operating in my workshop in my basement. The rig drives my Heathkit SB220 which has the Harbach soft key mod which has less then 1 volt keying voltage. This allows me to run up to 1000 watts no problem. A couple of weeks ago a friend brought me his home brew linear to test. Before connecting his linear to my KPA100 output I checked the schematic and measured the keying voltage on his linear which was 24 volts dc at less then 100 ma. When i connected the key line from his linear to the RCA jack on the KXPA100 interface cable the linear went to key down without any transmit command from the KX3. I then disconnected the KXPA100 from my KX3 and using the Elecraft keying interface cable to the linear directly from the KX3, the linear keyed up upon transmit commands from the KX3 normally. Well I finished testing my friends linear with 10 watts drive and everything worked fine despite reduced output power. Later I emailed Elecraft Support and asked them about the KXPA100 keying problem. I quickly got a response and a solution to the problem. It seems that the first manufactured KXPA100 linears below serial number 700 were designed to operate the KPA500 linear which has only a 5 volt keying voltage. Evidently,There was some problems with keying linear amplifiers with higher keying voltages so after KXPA100 serial number 700 and above Elecraft modified the keying circuit to accommodate linear amps with keying voltages up to 30 volts. I either missed the memo or Elecraft didn't contact those of us about this problem. Elecraft now has a mod kit that solved the keying problem. The kit part number is KXPAMDKT2 and is free. It consists of a 4.7K 1/4 watt ressistor (E500158) and a diode BV19WSTPMS diode (E560076). The diode is surface mount and the resistor is a leaded resistor. The instructions are clear but some may have problems in removing a surface mount resistor (R28) and installing the diode in its place. The resistor in the kit solders to existing components. The reason I am putting out this information is because I didn't know of the limitations of the KXPA 100's keying input circuit and could have easily blown that circuit out. Thanks for the bandwidth. 73 Dave Robertson KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] , K3 Gold Plated Plug Replacment
Everyone, I have an old K3 ( Serial # 934 ) and was starting to be plagued by interconnection problems inside of my K3 caused by the tin plated plugs. After contacting Elecraft I received 2 connector kits. One for the 100 watt power amp connections ( KPA3 ) and one for the front panel ( J30 and 35 ). Since I installed these gold plated pluge my interconnection problems seem to have gone away. I am still concerned about the remaining tin plated plugs in my K3 but Elecraft indicated that there has been no known issues with these remaining tin plated connectors. [Elecraft] Why black is the hot wire
At the early part of the 20th century, when electricians were wiring houses (knob and tube), the color of the electrical wire was only black. The power companies found that one side of the power feed (center tap on 220) to the house or building had to be grounded to prevent voltage buildup on the power lines. In order for the electricians to keep track of the grounded side (neutral) of the power feed they painted the grounded (neutral) wire white. Soon after the wire manufacturers started making both black and white wires so the electricians now could safely wire buildings without resorting to painting the ground wire white. 73 -- Dave Robertson KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Wayne you sent me this e-mail that you sent to the forum and K4ZRJ. concerning the 5.13 (and 5.15 which I don't have) You made a statement in the e-mail the 5.13 has a bug which effects PLL calbration. After cleaning all the tin plated contacts within my K3 and installing 5.13 I still ran into errors in calibrating my PLL. Being a retired engineer I committed a sin by making an assumption. I assumed the old PLL cards will calibrate with the 5.13 firmware. Everything works correctly with 5.10. Please enlighten me us all on which firmware (5.13, 5.14, or 5.15) can be used with the old PLL boards and the PLL calibrates. ( I will get the new PLL boards in a couple of weeks). I have: 1) Disconnected the KPA500/KAT500 control cable and connected the K3 via a 6 inch length of coax to a W2 sensor and that to another 6 inch length of coax to a Bird dummy load. 2) Done an EE INIT and manually added the K3 options and filters. This K3 has all options except 2M module. Have not restored my saved configuration file. 3) Done a transmit gain calibration, can send the results if you think I should. 4) Observed the following with the K3 in CW mode and the power output set to 100W: When I key the K3 (for a short time, say less than 5 seconds) on a band (say 10M) with a continuous key down, the SWR and RF output bar graphs will go blank after briefly showing normally. The power output at that time as measured on the W2 will be low, around 70 watts or so (varies with each band). When I again key the K3, I generally (not always) get the same result. After two, maybe three more keyings, the power output slowly rises. After another one or two keyings the output will be at 100 or more and the bar graphs will persist. After another keying, the power output stays as it was the previous time, but the bar graphs once again go blank. 5) When I change to another band, all this happens again, pretty much in the same order. After coming back to a band where this behavior has been previously noted, it happens again from the start. 6) I have never noticed this behavior before installing the new synthesizers, but I never used the K3 barefoot at 100W either (always used the KPA500). 7) There does seems to be a spike issue on 10M that initially faults the KPA500, but can be mitigated by reducing the K3 output power but that results in low drive to the KPA500 so that its output is in the 400 watt range. If you want, I can revert to the old synthesizers if you think it would be worth while to do so, but I would only install the main unit and disable the sub receiver by not installing its synthesizer. I don’t know if this is a hardware or software issue, but the blanking of the graphs seems odd for a hardware problem. Ideas? 73, Charles, K4ZRJ (K line with KAT500 W2) Old retired software engineer who likes to putz around with stuff. [Elecraft] KX3
Everyone. Some time ago I tried using NAP3 with an external USB stereo input sound module on my battery operated laptop with my battery operated KX3. Nothing was referenced to any power line source. The software worked fine. Hooking up the battery charger to the laptop or running the KX3 off the main power supply resulted in a buzz from the KX3 speaker and NAP3 not working. Disconnecting the I/Q cable killed the buzz. I had the same problem using my desktop computer. I purchased some 600 Ohm isolation transformers and connected them between the sound module of the computer to the I/Q output of the KX3. The problem went away and NAP3 worked perfectly. I just got my new KXPA100 linear and control cable. When testing the linear I had been running NAP3 and I noticed that when I powered off the KX3 and the KPA100 linear then powered the KX3 back up the linear went in to a firmware loading mode and was unresponsive to any K3 commands. The problem seem to be having NAP3 running and linked to the KX3 through the RS232 port. With NAP3 running and it's poling the KX3 from the computer caused interference between the KX3 issuing commands to the KXPA100 during power up. Shutting down NAP3 then powering up the KX3 resulted in everything starting up fine and full control to the linear from the KX3. After everything is started you can run NAP3 with no problems, just be sure the software is off before starting the KX3. I have not used any other pan adapter software but if it needs input from the KX3 it may cause problems when left running and trying to start the KX3 with the KXPA100 linear. The KXP100 Linear is working fine. I have used it with my SB220 and had no problems. Jim, The cable Elecraft sells is of top quality but is only 3 feet long. If that length is ok then get it. If you need longer cable you can build it. The schematic is in either the KPA500 construction or operation manual ( I think it is in the construction manual). You need 2, 15 pin HD D connectors ( Male type ) and an old parallel printer cable or a old RS232 cable with DB 25 connectors at each end. Make sure the linear's keying voltage and current is low. Old linears like the Collins and Heathkit SB series employ high keying voltages and will damage the KX3. Elecraft has not been at all clear about the Aux2 jack on the KX3 manual. Have fun with your KX3. I am having a ball with mine. 73 Dave KD1NA On 8/17/2012 1:05 PM, philippe PARACHEY wrote: Hello Dear Dave, I have read your post on the Juma with KX3, very fine. [Elecraft] (no subject)
Fred, Thanks for your comment. I have to assume you have a less then staller opinion of the Juma PA-100-D. Well with -28 db third order IMD this specification matches the K3-100's IMD spec. and this is with 100 watts out. All the reports I have gotton reported no problems with my signal, including those using panadaptors. You mentioned the price, well find a linear that had the same ability as the Juma PA100=D for less. It looks like it matches the new TenTech linear for around $700. I am only a consumer, I have no business interest in Juma but for a little company started by 2 hams in Finland with a lot of design and engineering experience, they look amazingly alot like another company we all know when they first started out (Elecraft). Look at the schematics and read their theory of operation before you judge the Juma products. 73 Dave KD1NA David: Who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes? (; While it is highly desirable to use a clean exciter, The only way a clean exciter can make a bad amp better is to enclose the amp in a feedback loop originating in the PA and terminating in the exciter. This can be done in a rig such as the K3/100 where both the amp and exciter are in the same box but is near impossible where you are dealing with 2 separate boxes. Simply: If the Juma is broke, the KX3 can't fix it. 73 Fred, AE6QL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 and Juma PA100-D linear
Everyone, On the Juma linear I am using with my KX3 I have received comments from the e-mail forum about the unpublished 3rd order IMD specifications of the Juma PA100-D linear amp. Well I did some testing with my limited equipment at my station and I measured the following: KX3 running 5 watts out -35db third order IMD KX3 driving the Juma PA100-D linear with 100 watts out -28db third order imd. Because the exciter (KX3) has a very good but not perfect output I would assume that it would effect the accuracy of the linear's output IMD measurment. Any comments 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 Juma Linear.
Everyone I have a KX3 #700 that is working fine. I am providing you this information for those that are interested. The linear works fine with the KX3 on all modes. I have ordered and built a Juma P100-D linear for use with the K3. With 3 watts drive the linear puts out 100 watts. You can see the linear at www.jumaradio.com. Below is an e-mail I sent the engineers at Juma radio with My experiances in building this linear kit and I wanted to share this with you. 73 Dave KD1NA ( e-mail to JUMA ) Juha and Matti, Last month I ordered and received one of your PA100-D kits. This e-mail will convey my experiences and issues in assembling the kit. First off let me inform you that the PA100-D is fully operational and has met my total expectations. I was quite satisfied with the quality of the components and design of the amplifier. The documentation, though sparse, provided me enough information needed to get everything together. The pictorial procedure to both winding the toroidal coils on the main board and the construction instructions on the PA board were very good and well documented. The parts lists as well as the printed circuit board layout documents gave me a good road map to where everything goes. Your schematic drawings are very good quality and easy to follow. I will state that this kit is not for the beginner and in fact it would be safe to say that over 50% of the hams in the United States would lack the skills to assemble your kit. Having said that I will say after completing your PA100-D kit I have a great amount of pride in the fact that I built this unit and it performs so well. My surface mount experience is limited and at first I was clearly struggling to properly getting the components mounted. After completing the control board ( I chose the most challenging board first ) I started to get very comfortable working with surface mounted components. It was the small resistors that was most challenging. Construction issues: The PA Board; The copper wire that was to make the ground connection and also assembling L3 was missing and in it's place was a small spool of solder. The brass cores that make up transformer T1 on the PA board were not the same diameter. One was 0.3 mm too large diameter and wouldn't slip into it's core. I machined it down to make it fit and it is working fine. The front panel board's holes that pass the push-button switches were too small and caused the buttons to bind after mounting the panel on the control board. I enlarged the holes about 1mm now the buttons pass through freely. On the PA board the Z1 and Q4 components were very hard to read the printing on the components even under very high magnification. We had the same problem on the Main board with Z1 and TR1. A suggestion is to tape the component's package to a small piece of paper with it's identification written on it. On some packages containing multiple devices you often had labels attached so no problem even though reading the actual component's number was near imposable. Another observation is you refer to transistors as Q1 or Q2 on the PA and control board parts list and schematic, but list them as TR1 and TR2 on the main board parts list and schematics. I had no problem with this but this could lead to less experienced builders. Overall the kit was fun to build and the end product works quite well. For your information I am driving the linear with an Elecraft KX3. I will copy this e-mail to your e-mail forum as well as to the Elecraft forum for everyone's information. You make a great product. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3
Everyone, Just for your information. Because I was concerned about metal parts being attracted to the speaker through the chassis holes in the KX3, I applied a layer of silicon rubber to the inside of the metal case where the speaker mounted then mounted the grill cloth and spacer to the case. Waited until the silicon set up then mounted the speaker. Works good and sounds nice. Now I have both protection against metal fragments being sucked into the speaker and the rig sounds nice. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 Arrivel
Everyone, I finally received my KX3 kit #700 last Wednesday ( July 11 ). The only issue was the battery cable was a little short making it challenging to keep it connected to the control board when opening the rig up. Another issue was the 4-40 screws provided to fasten the final power transistors to the side panel/heat sink were too short. I dug into my Elecraft parts box ( built many kits ) and found some that were the correct length. I upgraded the firmware to 1.06. When the firmware upgrade was finished I powered down the KX3 and was not able to power up the rig until I removed one battery and removed the power cord. After reinstalling the battery and power connection the KX3 powered up as normal with the new firmware. The radio works very well and my first qso was on 75 meters on AM!! Good audio reports. Sideband reports were good too. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KPA 500
Everyone, I have had my KPA500 linear for some time now and have been really happy with it. I use it with my K3 and they communicate with each other via the DB15 AUX cable that I built ( the one furnished by Elecraft was too short). The only issue I have encountered is the finals in the linear seem to heat up rather quickly causing the fan to kick in in a rather short period of time. it doesn't matter if I use the dummy load or a good match antenna. I also noticed the finals seem to cool rather quickly after the transmittion is terminated and the fan turns on after about 30 seconds to one minute after starting a ssb transmittion then goes to a higher speed after about 30 seconds more. If my transmittion time is greater then 2 to 3 minutes the fans go to high and the final temperature is around 70 degrees C. I have never had the linear go in to a fault because of heat. The fix. I removed the top, front, and right side panels of the KPA500. When I first built the linear I realized the mounting screws that mount the Z panel to the amplifier module were too long so I used the shorter ones that would normally go to mount the top panel. On inspecting these screws they were tight. Looking at the right panel I noticed there are 4 screws that mount the panel directly to the amplifier's heat sink. They were not as tight as I would have liked. I wanted to get the most efficient heat transfer from the module so I carefully applied some heat sink compound to the side of the heat sink of the amplifier module before carefully mounting the right sied panel back on the amplifier. I carefully made sure the 4 screws that mount from the panel to the heatsink ( which are normally covered by the handle) were solidly and carefully tightened. After inspecting the transformer connections and the rest of the inside of the linear I reassembled it and tested it out. Findings. Now when I am running ssb typically the fan doesn't come on until well in to the qso and never has the fan reach high mode. If I brick the key at 500 watts into a dummy load the fan goes high after about 2 minutes. I also noted the finals heat up slower and cool slower and the left panel temperature follows the final temperature.. Now the amp seems very happy and I am not bugged by the constant fan noise during a qso. I thought I would pass this on to everyone. [Elecraft] KPA500 Cable
Phil, The KPAK3 AUX Cable is about 3 feet long. I found that it was too short for my station. It is great if you stack the K3 and linear on top of each other but other configurations the cable can be too short. I cut up an old parallel printer cable which was shielded and had enough conductors. I bought the DB-15 plug and connector and using the cable schematic in the KPA-500 manual built mine about 5 feet long. It works great. Assembly took me about 4 hours. It is not quite involved as the K3 but there is a lot of assembly. It is worth getting the kit. 73 Dave KD1NA Finally I am getting around to seriously consider getting the KPA500. But, a couple of questions: (1) How long is the KPAK3AUX cable? From one diagram (image) on the web site it does not look much longer then 1.5 feet. Is the short length required for timing issues? With the way my shack is set up right now, I could not place the KPA500 right next to the K3. (2) The difference in cost from kit to factory built is $400. Does this rather high cost reflect the complexity of the building process or merely the cost of the amp (at $2000). I did the K3 build in what I would consider average time of about 8 hours. How does the KPA500 compare to the K3 in complexity and build time. (3) The PC serial interface is direct to the PC (Mac in my case) via a serial to USB cable, correct? I mean, it does not interact with other equipment (serially connected) such as the K3 or P3, true? Thanks for your help. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Antennas
I get my elecraft mail in journal form so my response is delayed. I had to mention that people who make broad statements about feed lines and antennas should check the antenna book and handbook before producing the wrong information. Here is an example: The impedance of the feed line does not change the impedance of the antenna. A half wave length dipole at the proper height is still a 50 ohm feed regardless of whether it's fed with 50ohm line or 600 ohm line. Last time I checked a dipole (single wire 1/2 wavelength center fed) is 75 ohms. The part of the statement about impedance of the feed line is correct but with swr on the feedline the apparent impedance can can different Happy Holidays everyone. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500
Greetings everyone, Friday. evening the friendly UPS driver was at my door with a 33 pound package and waiting for a signature. I unpacked the KPA-500 kit and inventoried the parts. Boy the main power transformer looks strange. Well last night I finished the assembly and after plugging in the power cord and saying a little prayer to the component Gods I turned it on. WOW it worked!!. Seriously, the kit went together well. There was one small problem. The small gray high voltage wire that snakes through the hole in the Zee bracket snapped off the power supply circuit board. It appeared that the conductor portion of the wire was nicked during stripping. I resoldered the wire back in place and continued building. (Who says these are no soldering kits :-). Finding hardware seemed to be somewhat confusing in the way they were bagged but everything was there. The two biggest challenges in building the KPA-500 was installing the rear panel and getting the main power transformer properly mounted. Thank s to lots of pictures in the manual I got it finished. Hooking it up to my K3 was easy but the control cable I purchased was a bit too short by 6 inches for the station configuration. I simply added the split cable and problem solved. (Would suggest adding between 6 inches to a foot to the cable). My linear is configured for 220 volts operation and operates very smoothly and quietly. Reports were good and it is nice to have the K3 configure it's driving power to match the linear's need. As usual Elecraft, you did it again, congratulations! During the time I was testing the linear Saturday evening there was a loud crash on the roof of the house. seems the heavy snow took out a tree limb and it bounced off the roof on it's way down. No damage but there was lots of power outages and tree damage here. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 Cal
Chuck, Using CW and CW reverse is really a good procedure. I have used USB/LSB when WWV was transmitting a tone with the same effect. Your method doesn't require a modulated tone as you are using the actual carrier. The only issue with our calibration procedures is you have to have good pitch hearing and many of the ham radio operatores are tone deaf. For those who are tone deaf use the zero beat method using the side tone in the K3. From now on I will use your method as I don't have to wait for a tone to be transmitted by WWV. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [Elecraft K3] Frequency Calibration using Sidetone
I see many references using the CW sidetone as a calibration tool for the K3's frequency readout. I fully understand the logic behind using the sidetone but this brings up a question. What is the reference for the sidetone frequency within the K3? Is in the K3's master oscillator? If you are in fact changing the master oscillator frequency to match K3's readout to an actual frequency, and if the sidetone frequency is derived from the same master oscillator aren't you defeating the purpose of your calibration. It seems logical to me to a method of calibration that your reference is not derived from the same oscillator you are trying to calibrate. Having said the above here is the method I use. On usb mode I tune the K3 to the reference standard you are using ( Any AM station such as WWV or any station of a known frequency). I set the readout to the exact known frequency of that station. I note the pitch of the sound I hear from the station (the tone from WWV or CHU works best) . Next I switch to LSB and note the pitch of the sound. If they are identical then the K3 is calibrated. If the pitch changes then you have to configure the master oscillator's frequency so the pitch between USB and LSB match. I relies the above method requires a good ability to note slight changes in pitch. Some of us do not posses that ability and must use a different method. Everyone, Many times by both the K3 engineers and others it has been stated to recycle the K3 power after doing a firmware upgrade. I understand the logic behind this action and do perform a power reset after doing a firmware upgrade or reload. My question is this. Every time a firmware upgrade is installed there are several apparent power resets that occur, even after the firmware install is finished. Am I correct in assuming these apparent power resets are not complete resets? [Elecraft] [Elecraft K3] ALC readout
Greetings everyone, I am a bit confused about the exact number of bars in the ALC meter that is used for VU. Both 4 bars and 5 bars have been mentioned. When I am on PSK I run the audio on 5 bars with no report of distortion.Setting the line input level to less than 5 bars have resulted in a relative long period of time for the power out of the K3, where as with 5 bars the K3's power out sets up very quickly. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [Elecraft K3]Buying a K3
Gary, I have had a K3 for 2 years now (Serial # 934) and have found that getting this rig was the best thing I ever did. You obviously have done your homework and done it very well. Let me state that as a retired product support engineer and technical instructor for a company that manufactures atomic partial accelerators primarily for the semiconductor industry, supporting the product you manufacture is just as important as properly designing it. Wayne and Eric have not only put together a world class team for Elecraft, they also seriously listen to their customers. Tell me about any Japanese ( and even some American) companies that do that on a regular basis. I have had the honor of working with Eric and his lovely wife at the Marlborough, Ma. at the Elecraft booth during this year's ARRL Convention. He is one of the most dedicated and helpful person I know. Having people like Eric and Wayne creating a company dedicated entirely to Amateur radio equipment of the finest quality and in kit form requires both expert design and a product support team that continuously goes out of their way to make sure the customer is listened to and properly taken care of. Good luck on your choice of radio but I hope it is the K3. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KDSP-2 Boot up Problems
I have had my Elecraft K2 for about 3 years now with no problems. Now I am having the KDSP-2 module not properly booting up ( the LED remains on ) some times when turning on the K2. When it does boot up it works perfectly. Often it doesn't boot which results in no audio out but when I power the K2 down and then imminently back up the KDSP-2 starts working normally. I have checked all the soldering and looked for solder bridges and found none. I did have some problems with the KDSP-2 shorting on the speaker of the 100 watt amplifier heat sink but I have fixed that. When the KDSP-2 is working it remains working even when I subject the K2 or the KDSP-2 to some small knocks or vibration, so it is not an intermittent connection. Any suggestions?? [Elecraft] Cable for HL 1.5kfx
Dale and all, I just made a cable for the 1.5kfx. I had found that the Yeasu plug pinout is not listed or shown in the linear manual that you download so I opened up the linear and traced the circuit in order to make up the cable. In looking through the linear manual that came in the linear package there was a page added that provided information on all the interface sockets on the back of the linear. I was going to modify the provided Yeasu cable but it is only about 2.5 feet long so I used an old RS232 cable that was shielded. The needed connector that plugs into the back of the linear is easily removed from the original cable and can be reused in the new cable. You will need to get a Mini DB=15 male connector and shell to connect to the K3. For the ALC connection I took an old phono cable with RCA Connectors, cut off one end and connected it to the K3 plug along with the band decoding cable. Hope this information is helpful. If you need the pinout information you can fine it in both the K3 and linear's manual (last page). For the Yaesu connector going clockwise from the connector key (looking at the connector from the rear panel of the linear, pin 1, band 0, pin 2, Band 1, Pin 3 band 2, Pin 4 band 3, Pin 5, ground. 73 Dave KD1NA Is there anyone on the list that has made up the interface cable from the K3 RS-232 to the SPE's DB-15 connector? Everyone, Last week I received my P3. All the parts were there and the kit was very well packaged. The P3 assembled very easily and worked from the first time I connected it to my K3. Upgrading the firmware was easy. Using my P3 with my computer has caused no apparent problems and I often use MIXW with digital modes. [Elecraft] P3 and Norton 360
Dick, John and everyone, I have a very small business maintaining computer systems for local small businesses and several private customers. In almost every situation involving Norton 360 resulted in either the inability to share printers over a network or false alarms with virus detection in known good applications. The solution was to uninstall the Norton 360 and install a different antiviral software. I have nothing against using Norton products, just stay away from 360. It was also my experience that Norton 360 was very difficult to uninstall. I actually had to go to the Norton web site in order to get the application to properly eliminate 360 from the system. Dave KD1NA I'm the programmer of the Windows P3 Utility. It was virus scanned before it was offered on the Elecraft web site. Yours is the first report of any virus report. Assuming you got the P3 Utility from the Elecraft FTP site or Elecraft web site then you are trying to install what I wrote. I don't have Norton Antivirus (earlier experiences led me away from it) but there are web sites that will scan a suspicious executable with a good number of virus detection tools. Perhaps one of those would help you decide who to trust here. I could find one, but from a trust standpoint it would be better for you to find it yourself or from someone else. I don't know what I could change to satisfy your Norton software. I can tell you that the P3 Utility includes an FTP client, and in order to do its intended function, it must be allowed to contact the Elecraft FTP site in order to copy P3 firmware from Elecraft's FTP server to your computer. All the Elecraft Utilities (K3, W2, K144XV and P3) include thus function. Dick, K6KR Sent from my iPhone On Aug 23, 2010, at 5:51 AM, John E. [Elecraft] Elecraft [P3] Idea
Bob, I think your idea for fine tuning using the P3 is great. I hope you convayed your idea directly to Elecraft. 73 Dave KD1NA P3 s/n 74 arrived today, went together nicely and works great. I'm still getting used to it, but as a long-time LP-Pan/PowerSDR-IF user, I was struck by one thing right away. With PowerSDR-IF point and click tuning with the mouse is enhanced by the fact that after pointing and clicking to change the K3 frequency, one may immediately fine tune the signal with the mouse scroll wheel. Especially for CW signals, this becomes second nature, a quick, fluid series of actions - point, click, fine tune up or down to zero-beat the signal (I do it by ear), using only one hand. This is good because I can't always point with perfect accuracy, so am often some tens or hundreds of Hz away from the desired signal. I set the scroll wheel fine tuning rate to either 10 or 50 Hz per step. With the P3, when I move the marker and tap the SELECT knob to QSY to the frequency of some CW signal, rarely end up at zero-beat, often at least 100-200 Hz away, sometimes more. So, in order to zero-beat I must move a hand to the K3 and tune it in or press SPOT. I'd rather finish the job using the hand already on the P3 SELECT knob, it's much easier that way when it's done repeatedly (search and pounce etc). I like panadaptor spans of 30 to 40 kHz, but even with narrower spans I just can't consistently get close enough to zero-beat with a CW signal on the P3 using the marker. What I'd like to propose is a P3 fine tune QSY mode (optional, controlled by menu setting), where the act of QSYing by tapping the SELECT knob not only changes the K3 frequency, but also: 1. Clears the marker. 2. Puts the P3 into a mode where turning the select knob one way or the other fine tunes the K3 at some rate like 200 Hz per revolution or so (a fine rate, maybe adjustable). 3. Then, after any required fine tuning is complete, one more tap of the select knob disables fine tuning, and it's business as usual. The marker is cleared in step 1 because otherwise turning the SELECT knob should continue to move the marker. So the flow goes like this, with the proposed Fine Tune QSY mode enabled in menu: 1. Tap MKR A to enable marker. 2. Turn SELECT knob to move marker onto desired signal. 3. Tap SELECT knob to QSY. The marker is cleared. Fine tuning of K3 is enabled. 4. Turn SELECT knob to fine tune (to zero-beat in the CW case, by ear or using CWT indicator) the desired signal. 5. Tap SELECT knob once more to disable fine tuning, returning to normal state. MKR B would get the same treatment. This would be perfectly general, working for all modes, and less tiring when QSYing repeatedly using the marker. [Elecraft] Transformer
Vic, If your transformer is a true 1 to 1 winding ratio the RMS voltage measurment of both the primary and secondary should be the same. In your case either the turns ratio are not 1 to 1 or you have a shorted turn in the primary winding. If it a shorted turn then even though the actual turns ratio is 1 to 1, if there is a shorted turn in the primary, the electrical turns ratio will not be the same. If you connect the transformer with the secondary as the primary, your output voltage RMS will be lower. 73 Dave KD1NA From: Vic K2VCO v...@rakefet.com To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sun, August 1, 2010 5:24:04 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Speaking of off-shore manufacture... [Elecraft] K3 AM Split Operation
Everyone, After using my K3 for almost 2 years now I recently started to operate on AM in the 80 meter band. I get very good reports and have fun using this mode from time to time. Since Elecraft got synchronous AM working I have found that the K3 really does a good job of copying AM signals and eliminates quite a bit of qrm. The issue with sync AM is the K3 locks to the carrier frequency of the received signal. With amateur radio AM many operators are using vintage equipment thus are not on the same frequency (sometimes in access of 1 Khz off). If you transmit with the K3 after the station who just transmitted is off frequency your K3 will be off frequency too. To eliminate the problem I set VFO A and B on the same and correct frequency and set the K3 to Split mode and to transmit from VFO B. Now when in Sync AM mode VFO A tracks the received AM signal but you always transmit on the proper frequency (VFO B). 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Elecraft W2
Everyone, I am sending this to the forum as well as Elecraft support for everyone's information. After receiving and assembling the W2 I decided to look inside the 1-2000 HF head to see what is there. Clearly impressed I reinstalled the cover to the head and hooked it up to the station. when I first applied RF to the W2 head I had no power indication. The main unit booted up fine and all cables were properly connect according to the diagram on the case of the sensor. I decided to look again inside the sensor head and discovered that the removable part of the sensor head case had the label which could be reinstalled backward (which I did). I reassembled the sensor head case and hooked it up correctly and everything worked fine. Elecraft, I would suggest that on future sensor head units the label should be placed on the outer shell of the case. That way if someone opens it up they cannot disturb the orientation of the label with regard to the internal PC board. For those of you already owning a W2, I would suggest you mark the outer shell of the case of the sensor head with input and output labels or markings to be sure the removable part of the case is reinstalled properly. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Firmware Update.
Phil, It is very important that you be certain that whatever you use to get a RS232 connection from your computer to the K3 is good. Running HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) is a good test. Have your K3 set at the highest baud rate it can do because that is what the K3 utility is going to use. When upgrading your firmware do not do anything on the computer until the up-date is finished. Clicking around your Desktop or going to other applications in your computer during the up-date can result in a time slice in the process which can corrupt data. Enjoy your K3! 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [Elecraft K3] Serial port test
When Windows is started, The operating system checks the Device Manager to see what is set up on your system. When it sees the serial ports (both real and USB to Serial) Windows exercises all the output lines of all the serial ports on the system to test them. This can result in a very quick keying of the K3 (mine does it 3 times). If the K3 is in SSB or CW mode there will be no output but if you have a linear on during this time it will see a PTT input during the port test. I always have the K3 (and linear) off when I reboot or turn on the computer. I also have the linear in stand by or off before I turn on the K3. There are many rigs which will have a short transmit burst when powering up, K3 included. Unless you are running an analog rig your rig stands a good chance of doing the same thing 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 RS232
John, It is the operating system, not the divice, that determines the RS232 port assigned. You can change the port number assigned by opening Device Manager and selecting ports. Right click the serial port you want to change and go to Properties. in Properties go to Port Settings then click the Advanced button. in the lower right or that window is the port number. you can change it to whatever you like as long as the port number you choose is not already assigned. Afterward you have to setup your software to the new port setting. 73 Dave KD1NA Does anyone know the nature of the K3 USB - COMM adapter sold by Elecraft? I cannot find anything in the Elecraft literature about it (other than the price, of course). For example: Does it come with a pre-defined COMM port number? A settable COMM port number between 1 and 10? A settable COMM port number which may be anything (e.g. 17 or 25 or...). How do driver software programs/suites such as DigiPan, FLDIGI, HRDeluxe recognize this adapter (if at all)? [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Bifilar Windings
I used this trick to evenly twist wires together for bifilar winding; 1, Trim the wire so both are the same length. 2, Clamp one end of the wires in a vice or have someone hold them with a pair of pliers. 3, Clamp the other end of the wires into a chuck of an electric drill (variable speed). 4, While holding the wire tight start the drill at slow speed and the wires will twist evenly. 73 Dave KD1NA Hi all, Quick question about the bifilar windings on the bifilar transformers like T6. How critical is the twist in the two wires? When I did T6, I was unable to get a terribly consistent winding of the two wires together. Build manual says they should cross over about every 1/2, but some parts of the wires ended up a little tighter than that, others less. On some of the windings when I wound the core, they more or less didn't pass over each other at all for one or two windings (tho they were adjacent). I'm assuming this is probably not super critical, but just curious. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Roger, A cheap and dirty way to check your RS232 and the serial cable is to jumper pins 2 and 3 of the K3 end of the serial cable (after it was removed from the K3). [Elecraft] Bird Wattmeters
Working in the electronic calibration field for some years I have found that any mechanical meter movement has it's greatest accuracy at full scale only. the meter movement's accuracy diminishes as you go down in scale. So if a Bird Wattmeter is calibrated for 5% accuracy at full scale then it's accuracy will be reduced as the meter deflection is reduced. That is why for greatest accuracy with a Bird Wattmeter measuring 9 watts (for example) should be using a 10 watt slug for greatest meter deflection. Digital readouts will always have the accuracy of the measuring circuitry + or - one count of the least segnifigent digit of the instrument or computer readout no matter how much of the selected range scale is used. Having said that you will have the most accuracy when approaching the upper scale range ( example 90 watts on the 100 watt range and not 9 watts on the 100 watt range). See Below: 73 and Happy New Year Dave KD1NA Bird wattmeter's, the spec is 5% OF THE FULL SCALE READING - and that is ONLY right after calibration. That specification says that if a BIRD wattmeter has been recently calibrated and handled carefully afterwards, with a 100 watt slug, it can have an error of 5 watts - and that applies to *anywhere* on the scale. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Soldering Coin Cell Batteries
Two times I directly soldered wires to coin cell batteries only to have a strange thing happen when replacing the spent batteries. When replacing the spent battery I noticed a strange discoloration on the battery next to where it was soldered. It looked like some king of powder. when I touched the battery with my hot soldering iron to remove the wire there was a loud band and flash from that discolored area of the battery. [Elecraft] 3.44 Beta
Julian and All, When operating in PSK mode and having the K3 in DATA A mode I had no RF output I noticed there was no ALC bars at all indicating no audio present from the computer. Turning up the K3 Mic gain (line in on data modes) there was no increased bar indication indicating no audio in from the computer. Returning the K3 mic gain (line input) to the correct value and switching the K3 mode to USB, then back to DATA A mode produced both the ALC bars and RF out. When I transmit it takes about 15 to 20 seconds for the K3 to adjust the RF out to the correct value. When I operate using the USB mode with 3.44 installed (requireing selection of line input and eliminating any compression) the K3 responces very well and only takes between 1 to 3 seconds to adjust power out. During all of this no adjustments to the computer's audio out were made. Reinstalling 3.42 firmware eliminates any problems in DATA A mode. I will run more tests later as I have a ton of leaves to rake. 73 Dave KD1NA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Inductive Kick
Carl, I completely agree with you. I have seen 12 volt DC relays produce as much as 1000 volts peak or more when the current to the relay coil was terminated. This term was taught to me as Inductive Kick. When any coil of wire has DC current pass through it, a magnetic field is produced and magnetic flux builds up around the coil. This would be like stretching a spring. If you disconnect the current source, the magnetic field can quickly collapse causing the lines of magnetic flux to quickly cut accrossed the windings of the coil resulting in a high voltage spike. This would be equivalent to letting go of your stretched spring which can snap back at high speed resulting in possible damage. Placing a diode in parallel with the coil with the cathode toward the positive side of the current source has no effect when current is normally applied. When you interrupt the current. the magnetic field collapses causing the coil to become a current source. The diode carries the current and reduces the voltage because of it's low impedance when switched on. Remember the stretched spring. Having the diode in the circuit is like slowly releasing your spring instead of it snapping back. Hope this helps. 73 Dave KD1NA Don, seriously disagree about the magnitude of the kick. For years I taught a course on industrial installations and demo'ed the kick issue by soldering two bare wire to the coil of a small Potter and Brumfield ice cube 12 vdc relay. I would pick the biggest guy in the class to hold the wires while I touched them to a nine-volt transistor radio battery. And then watch as he would throw the relay across the room. A reverse diode would vastly reduce the effect. Well, I got yelled at and was told Hey, Stupid (and stupid wasn't the word they used)! Put that on a storage scope to see what you're messing with. The scope showed a spike of 450 vdc! The diode reduced it to less than 75 vdc. The magnitude is due mainly to the large inductance of the coil, but until some measurements are taken, some caution is advised. The inductance of any coil inside a K2 or K3 is bound to be much smaller. But the phenomenon is the same. 73, Carl WC0V __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] RF Power
Greetings, With all the information on calculating actual RF power and all these formulas being presented I fine it can be very confusing to people who don't have an electronic or mathematic background. Being a technical instructor and self-made engineer I always find that a little explanation of the basics before springing a formula on someone really eliminates a lot of confusion. So if those knowledgeable people will excuse my bandwidth let me explain a couple of things. If you have a 110 volt 100 watt light bulb and you connect it to a 110 volt DC source (like a battery) it will dissipate 100 watts of power. On AC power the voltage and current is always reversing polarity in a sine wave pattern at a given frequency (60 HZ for our power lines in North America). Because AC is constantly changing, we must apply 110 volts RMS AC voltage (Root Mean Square). This strange RMS value is simply the actual peak AC voltage that is needed to produce the DC equivalent (100 watts) across the load or bulb or the equivalent of driving the load with DC voltage of 110 volts. I am not going to derive RMS here but I will tell you the value RMS voltage = Peak voltage/Square root of 2. Having said that you would have to have a peak value of 155.56 volts (or 311.27 Peak to Peak (maximum positive to negative voltage swing on AC)) to dissipate 100 watts of energy across the 100 watt load or bulb. Now to RF power. RF out of your rig is a sine wave (or better be or you got harmonic problems). If you look at your RF output with a scope you will see a peak to peak ac voltage which is being dissipated across your load (which is either your antenna or dummy load). If you use a RF probe that uses a diode to rectify the RF you will see a peak voltage of the RF minus the voltage dropped across the diode in your probe. Power (RMS) = E ( the RMS voltage) squared / The resistance R of the load (EG 50 Ohms). If you are using a scope you have to read the Peak to peak value and divide that by 2 for the peak value. Now to convert this value to an equivalent DC power value ( RMS) you must divide your peak value by the square root of 2 or 1.414 ( this is plenty accurate for our calculations or you can use 1.414213562373 and on and on if you are a accuracy type. Look at the example below. 200 volts peak to peak / 2 = 100 volts peak 100 volts peak / 1.414 = 70.72 volts RMS Now Square the 70.72 value which will be ( E^2 ) 5110.31 and divide it by the load resistance ( 50 Ohms ) which is 100.02 watts. If you use a probe, in order to have most accuracy, you should measure the voltage dropped across the diode in the probe. Silicon diodes (1N1458 ) drop about 0.6 volts. Germanium diodes ( 1n34 ) drop about 0.3 volts. Power (RMS) = ((Probe reading + diode drop) divided by 1.414) squared, divided by the load resistance. For simplicity, assume the diode drop is .3 volts. your measure 20 volts. Add .3 volts ( diode drop ) for a total of 20.3 volts. this your peak value. divide 20.3 volts by 1.414 for the RMS value which is 14.36 volts. Square 14.36 for a value of 206.21 (E^2) and divide the squared value by the load resistance ( 50 Ohms ) (R) for a value of 4.124 watts. If you don't know your diode drop and always use of 0.3 volts your power calculations will be within 2 to 3% unless you are trying to work in the 1 watt area or less. I hope this helps. [Elecraft] K3 Time
Yesterday, I installed and tested David's K3 Timekeeper program for Windows XP. It really works great and is very quick. You have to be sure your computer clock is right on before you execute the program. 73 Dave KD1NA I've had a few requests for the K3 time updater I mentioned the other day. So I've made it available for download. Mac version (OS X 10.3 or later) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3Time.zip Windows XP/VISTA (maybe 98 not sure) http://sight.net/K3Time/K3TimeWin.zip It's very easy to use and should be self-explanatory. Select the appropriate serial port and baud rate the first time the program is run. It will remember these settings, so they need to be set only once. To display UTC time, click the UTC checkbox. To return to local time, uncheck it. Be sure the computer's system clock is set properly, and if applicable, set for Daylight Savings Time. To setup unattended updates, click the Auto-Update checkbox. This will automatically update the time on the K3 whenever the program is run (if the K3 is attached and turned on, of course). When Auto-Update is enabled the program will automatically send the current system time to the K3 and then terminate after a 10 second delay. The delay allows time to turn off auto-update if need be. On Windows, you could use Scheduled Tasks in the control panel to set a time schedule for automatic execution of the program. On the Mac, a cron job (crontab) could be used. Cronnix is a nice Aqua frontend for cron if you're not familiar with creating crontabs from Terminal. I'm not sure how well the K3 clock keeps time. I never use it. But I would think updating the time once a week or even once a month would be sufficient. Click the Update K3 button to send the current system time to the K3. That's all there is to it. The K3 time will not be *exact* with the computer, but it will get it close (within 0.5 second or so). I get the best results by clicking the update button as soon as a new second begins. Waiting until late into a second will result in the K3 being a second behind. Try clicking the update button several times until you get a good visual sync. I've done very little testing of the Windows version. There could be bugs. The program works by sending a sequence of CAT commands to the K3. Clicking Update K3 begins this sequence: K31; // Enables K3 extended mode MN073; // Enters CONFIG:TIME Menu option DS;// reads VFO A display area (now displaying TIME) Parse DS; command response to get K3 HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND. Determine computer HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND. [Elecraft] Elecraft Carrying Cases
I have a K3 carrying case from Ken and his XYL and I love it. One thing I did notice is it is soft throughout the case. I had my wife make a stiffener from plastic canvas used for knitting. this is available at craft stores. My wife cut the plastic canvas material the same size as the bottom of the carrying case and covered it with duck cloth which is soft. With this stiffener on the bottom of the carrying case it provides a stable platform for the feet on the side of the k3 to set on and makes the sides stable to protect the K3 during transport. Placing the K3 in the carrying case with the front panel facing up exposes all the coax/BNC connectors to damage when the case is set down on it's bottom. With the stiffener installed in the case I feel the K3 is much safer with the K3's side feet down.Message: 73 Dave KD1NA Date: Fri, 27 Feb 2009 06:54:31 -0600 From: Robert Naumann w...@w5ov.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Dust Covers, Carry Cases, and More To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: d191dffe49bb4273b3643180f24c1...@sonyrb42g Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii David, If you were not transporting the K3 and merely keeping it safe on a shelf or in a closet, you might want to place it with the handle towards the opening so you could lift it out of the case somewhat more easily with the handle. While transporting it on the shoulder strap, you would want the front panel facing up so you minimize the chances of smashing the delicate front panel into something. Also, since the case is not rigid, the shoulder strap will put pressure on the back and side panels as you carry it with the front panel facing up - I would not want to put that pressure on any part of the front panel. So, when I travel with mine, it's front panel towards the opening - not the handle. 73, Bob W5OV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Mike, The universal color codes that PC's use on their cound card plugs are: Red=Mic in Green=Line out Blue=Line in This is assuming your sound card is set up for analog sound out and not 6 channel digital. Old sound cards use lables (which are hard to read) and are all the same color plugs. 73 Dave KD1NA Dave Wrote...but did apply all of the applicable hardware mods to date. It is difficult for me to know which one I am plugged into because I do not understand the color code on the PC sound input output panel. The only way I make sure I am plugged into Line In is to bring up the Windows microphone panel and mute all inputs but Line In and make sure that I am getting a waterfall trace with only Line In selected. If no noise on the waterfall I plug into another socket until I finally arrive at Line In. I found this made quite a difference on my set up when I finally plugged into the correct place. I also like to listen to shortwave broadcast stations. The sub receiver will get the gen coverage module plus a 13, 2.7, and 500 filter. The 2.7 and 500 will be matched for diversity receive. The FM filter on the RF board will be used for 10m repeaters, while the FM filter on the sub will be used for broadcast reception. I don't know if anyone here has heard of the AOR LA-390 active loop RX antenna, but I'm thinking this might work well for my diversity experiments. KEITH and fellow Elecrafters. It has been long known that certain individules have an inablity of decerning a difference in a pitch of tones that are somewhat close to the same frequincy. This is comminally refered to as tone deafness.Thats why CWT is real handy. There are many good CW operators that are tone deaf. They can hear the tones but if the tones are very close in frequency they cant tell one from the other other then sending speed and style. An interesting fact. in a room with 150 people being tested for SONAR which several pair of tones were played. Some tone pairs were the same frequency, other tone pairs were offset from each other. You had to mark weather the tones were same, second tone high, or second tone low. You had to get %85 right or you failed. When the test was completed there was only 10 of us that passed. For us that are not aflicted with this minor disablity using your brain as a filter for the pitch you want can make for good cw copy. [Elecraft] Holding Screws
Mike, When I was in the Navy. We used a dark clay like material that was designed to seal cables when they passed through stuffing tubes in bulkheads (walls) or decks (floors) we called it Monkey sh*t. This stuff was really good in holding screws on the screwdriver. Nowadays I just magnetize the screwdriver and no longer need the clay. 73 Dave KD1NAHello list members, I found a trick for holding small screws on the end of the screwdriver until you can get them into a tight place and started. A small amount of electrical connector black seal mastic or putty shaped on the end of the driver takes up the gap enough to hold the screw until you get it thru the hole and started. Once pulled away, the putty stays on the screwdriver. Great for removing screws also. Once in a while the mastic needs reshaped to the tip of the screwdriver to hold the screw securely. It beats fingering the tiny screws into close spaces and hoping you dont drop it before you can get the screwdriver head on it. [Elecraft] K3 AF Mod
Ron, Could you also send me a copy please. Thanks. Dave KD1NA Hi Terry: There's an application note that discusses how to get to the nuts holding that panel as part of making a modification to the K3's AF amplifier. It was released a couple of months ago but searching all over the place I cannot find it on the Elecraft Web site. I'll send you a copy directly. [Elecraft] Firmware updates
I have downloaded many firmware files from Elecraft and found that downloading the beta files can be downloaded to any folder you desire using Windows Internet explorer. The non-beta firmware can only be downloaded in to the defult folder of the Elecraft installer program then later moved into the desired folder. You don't use the FTP site for non-beta firmware. Installing both beta and non-beta firmware from my own folder is successful. 73 Dave KD1NA___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KSB2
Curt, I have 2 K2s and both have the KSB2 option. First, Installing the SSB option and aligning it correctly doesn't reduce the K2's effectiveness in the CW mode, in fact it inhances it. Second, This option opens the door to digital, SSB and sstv communications. If your K2 is stock CW then you have to remove the front panel to install the mic circuit components which is a pain but easily done. You will be glad you install this option (even if you don't use SSB). 73 Dave KD1NACompleted K2 s/n 6424 a few months back, am thinking of adding a KSB2 adapter kit I own. I've seen several threads indicating that the SSB performance of the K2 with the adapter isn't very good. Would adding this capability be worthwhile, or is leaving the K2 as CW only a better option? 73, Curt KB5JO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
