[Elecraft] KX3 Internal Battery - no Li-ion -- Why?

2012-07-01 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello Elecraft,

I was looking at the KX3, but I see no Li-ion internal battery option -why?
I've been very active in portable operating and always use li-ion
internal batteries even in my KX1. If properly installed, they are
better than most other type batteries and last longer. Why pick a
battery technology that is stepping-stone battery technology?

[Elecraft] K2 Rig to Computer and Paddle cable

2008-12-27 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I'm clearing out my shack and found a cable to connect an Elecraft K2 to
a computer and paddles. The cable has on one end a 1/4 stereo jack to
wye 1/4 stereo plugs. The cable has the diodes wired into it so you
just can just plug in your paddle and computer and play! I used this on
my Elecraft K2 and it works great!

If interested in it, reply off list to WA3WSJ.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: PB #2 and Nov PBMME

2008-11-12 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I plan to operate the November PBMME this Saturday. I will again offer a
really nice Sterling Silver Keychain Holder with a Polar Bear Coin in it
to the first Polar Bear who makes contact with WA3WSJ. This is my last
keychain so try to work WA3WSJ FIRST! Again this applies only to Polar
Bears. I will also be on the air making points for the GORC Iditarod
Challenge. Hope to work many as I plan to hike up to Pulpit Rock on the
AT to operate. If the weather is to bad I'll operate from French Creek
State Park at the Fire Tower. I plan to use my Elecraft KX1.

[Elecraft] AT QRP Hiking Partner?

2008-11-09 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I'm planning my final AT QRP PA Hike in November sometime. I'm looking
for anyone who would like to hike with me on a Friday, Saturday and home
Sunday. I plan to hike seven miles on Friday, six miles on Saturday and
six miles on Sunday. I plan to play qrp Friday night, Saturday morning
and evening. I started this hike in 2001 and I hope to finish off
Pennsylvania this year! Yes, it's been an experience and I plan to
start Maryland next year. Don't think MD will take me to long as the AT
only runs some forty plus miles through MD compared to 220 miles plus
through PA. To commemorate my last AT QRP Hike in PA, I will send out a
beautiful certificate to anyone who makes a contact with me while I'm
hiking the AT in PA. Please respond off the list to WA3WSJ.

[Elecraft] GORC Iditarod Challenge 2009 (GIC-2009)

2008-10-24 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Registration for the GIC 2009 is closed and it looks like we have
twenty-nine GIC 2009 Mushers for the November 1st start. Seven are
strictly qrp while the rest are running 25w to 100w. Mushers come from
USA, Alaska, Ireland, England, France, Bulgaria and Greenland. It should
be a FUN mush around the globe!

If you hear a GIC Musher on the air, please give him or her a call. Yes
we have one Alaskan operator who is a female musher!

To all non-mushers, please remember that a GIC Musher may only contact
hams in the country he or she is at on the course. So if a musher is
calling Canada only, all others don't count as points, but he or she may
contact anyone for qsl purposes etc.

Here's the GIC 2009 Course:

USA, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and
Greenland

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ's AT QRP Hike in PA

2008-10-20 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

This past weekend I was joined by Scott, N3SW, as we hiked twenty-one
miles on the Appalachian Trail from Pine Grove State Park to Caledonia
State Park here in Pennsylvania. The scenery was just beautiful with the
fall leaf colors on all the mountains we hiked over and through. The
first day we hiked around 4.5 miles to Toms Run Shelters. These two
shelters looked new! I put up my tent and Scott slept in his hammock.
Friday night I worked N4BP in the contest and later we just sat by the
campfire and then to bed in around 35' weather. Saturday we awoke to
just above freezing temperatures, but clear blue skies. We eat breakfast
and then hiked around 6.5 miles to Birch Run Shelter. Again this shelter
looks new! Scott and myself found a nice campsite about 100 yards from
the shelter to set up camp. After setting up our camp, we played radio
and I worked W8AT! How about that call W8(AT)! Yes my Elecraft
Pimped-Out KX1 worked great the entire hike. Oh yes, I forgot to
mention that I forgot my BW Antenna, but Scott had an extra Norcal
Doublet so I used that antenna on 30m. Saturday night we again made a
nice campfire and sat around the fire talking and listening to the Penn
State Football game and later the baseball game. It was a great evening
and the fire kept us warm. Sunday we packed up and hiked some gorgeous
trail with elevations over two thousand feet. This section was a
ten-mile hike back to Caledonia S.P.

The hike was great as we met lots of people on the trail and at the
shelters. We met two grandparents shadowing their grandson and his dog
as they hiked the AT, a group of seven girls, a south-bounder and many
more. It was a great experience that will forever stay with me. Thank
you Scott, N3SW, for hiking with me.

If you want to view some pictures of this great hike, just click on the
link below.

2008-10-15 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I will again operate in the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event, PBMME,
this Saturday, October 18th. As usual, the first person who works WA3WSJ
while I'm backpacking on the AT this Saturday, will receive a 1996 Proof
Canadian $2 Polar Bear Coin. It's a beauty and it's yours if you work me
first! I'll be operating the PBMME on 20m, 30m and 40m around the qrp
frequencies. This PB Coin comes in its own box and has a clear, round,
plastic enclosure to keep it clean.

In fact because this is the FIRST PBMME of the 2009 season, I'll throw
in a sterling silver keychain to mount your new PB Coin so you can keep
it with you. I have one and it reminds me of the Polar Bear Ops every
day! Keep an ear out for WA3WSJ using my pimped-out Elecraft KX1.

[Elecraft] AT QRP Hike During PBMME!

2008-10-14 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Listen for Scott, N3SW and Ed, WA3WSJ operating from the Appalachian
Trail starting Friday evening and ending Sunday Morning. We will hike
the AT from Pine Grove Furnace S.P to Caledonia S. P. here in PA. We
both will operate our Elecraft KX1s while at the shelters. Look for
WA3WSJ and N3SW on 20m, 30m and 40m cw around the qrp frequencies. N3SW
might have 80m too? On Saturday afternoon and early evening listen for
us operating the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event from Birch Run
Shelter on the AT. We will also operate Sunday morning. This will be
around a 20-mile AT hike and we both should enjoy the leaves as they are
turning bright colors about now!
Hope to hear your call through my headphones on the AT.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ Oct 17-20 AT QRP Hike

2008-09-07 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I'm tentatively planning the third-leg of my four-part hike series to
the Maryland State Line. I started this hike on the NJ/PA AT Line with
two other hams, but it's just me and my dog Trevor Boy now!

I'll start my AT hike at Pine Grove Furnace S.P. on Friday, October
17th. I'll then hike four miles on the AT to Toms Run Shelters and spend
the night.

Saturday I'll hike around 6.5 miles to Birch Run Shelters and operate
the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event from this shelter.

Sunday, I plan to hike 7.5 miles to Quarry Gap Shelters to take a break.
Depending on how I feel, I'll either spend the night or hike the extra
two miles down to Caledonia S.P. to my truck and back home.

I hope to work many while hiking this leg of my Footsteps to Maryland
Hike Series. http://wa3wsj.homestead.com/Hiking.html

I'll be using my Elecraft KX1 and my Black Widow Vertical on the hike.

One more hike to finish off PA!!!

[Elecraft] GIC-2009 Mushers

2008-08-22 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello fellow GORCers and all,

You may have noticed that GORC is sponsoring the GORC Iditarod 2009
Challenge or GIC-2009. This should be an exciting event with many
challenges. Did I say challenges? Yes with Global warming and ice melt,
the GIC should prove very interesting. Did you read about the ice in the
Artic not freezing and opening water routes! How about the huge crack in
an iceberg in Greenland. These might prove to be challenges to the
mushers. To date we have seven mushers with W8HL having his lead dog
weighing in at 75 pounds! That's a BIG DOG! Remember resgistration
for the GIC-2009 closes on October 1st, 2008.

2008-08-17 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all QRPers,

While this isn't a QRP Event, QRPers are encourged to enter!

This is an early announcement to all GORC Members to keep an eye or ear
out for the GORC Iditarod 2009 Challenge! What is it? How do I enter it?
What is the prize? Yes, many questions that will come soon.

What is it? -- It's a race around the world during the winter months on
your dog sled. The race will take place through the frozen parts of
the world as you mush your way across the globe.

Don't worry you won't have to actually race a dog sled, but you will
have to make contacts around the world!

GORC Iditarod 2009 Challenge

Date: 11/01/08 to 03/31/09
Bands: 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m
Modes: SSB, CW, PSK31
Power: 100w or less

RACE COURSE:
1.Canada
2.Alaska
3.Russia
4.Finland
5.Sweden
6.Norway
7.Iceland
8.Greenland

All mushers MUST make one qso in each country in the proper order. No
musher shall advance to the next station (country) without first
contacting 1, then 2 then 3 etc.

All mushers must sign up before October 1, 2007. No late entries will be
allowed to mush. Your sled will be your radio and the power output you
use. Your dogs will be your antennas! The more power you use, the
heavier the sled and the less points you will receive for each contact.
Heavy antennas mean heavy dogs and less points! You may stay at each
station as long as you like and make contacts, but remember, this is a
race and the earlier you finish the more points you will receive at the
finish. Also any contacts made while you are portable count extra! You
don't have to finish the course, but you'll loose lots of points.

All Mushers will receive a nice certificate upon FINISHING the course.
First Place will receive a beautiful ICE-Like Trophy! GORC Members are
extra points!

To enter all mushers must fill out an entry form that will soon be
placed on the GORC Website http://www.wa3wsj.org/GORC.html

(I'll be busy preparing my dogs and sled)

More details later!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ's PA QRP Hike

2008-05-28 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Well I hiked 27-miles in four days and met a bunch of interesting
people. In fact I met a ham at the ATC Headquarters in Boiling Springs
and another ham on the trail. I hiked from Duncannon, PA to Boiling
Springs, PA and had a real blast. I also took my pimped-out KX1 with
me and made contacts along the Appalachian Trail. This hike was the
first in a series of four hikes I'm calling my Footsteps into Maryland
Series of hikes. I started this PA AT Hike a few years ago and hope to
finish off Pennsylvania soon. The scenery was just awesome! The weather
was great and the AT just fabulous for this hike. If anyone wants to
view pictures of my hike, just click on the link below.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Wait and Wait and Wait!

2008-05-21 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello Drew, AF2Z

I plunked down over $1300 for a deposit on my K3, but after waiting five
months and then calling Elecraft they told me to wait another three
months. That was a total wait of 8-months! At the five-month point I
told Elecraft to cancel the order and send my money back.
I then went out and bought an Icom 703+ and just love this little radio.
It's no K3, but for less than $700 it's worth the money.

I still plan to buy a K3, but I WILL NOT WAIT MONTHS to receive it.
Elecraft doesn't have their act together concerning the K3. This is from
an op who built a K1, K2 and a KX1. I'm VERY disappointed in Elecraft
selling the K3 before they were geared up for production.

When Elecraft has a K3 ON-THE-SHELF I might buy one.

Ed, WA3WSJ
**
Yeah, that's right... most of us took a crash course in CW, learning
it overnight. Then worked all band DXCC the next day. And we expect
the solar flux to be at 300 in another week here or so. So where's our
K3's? We didn't become ham radio operators because we like to wait
around for stuff. No sir.

Drew

2008-05-21 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Look for Kangaroo Ed, WA3WSJ hiking the AT here in Pennsylvania starting

my pimped-out Elecraft KX1 Radio. Look for me on CW around 7.030mhz,
10.117mhz and 14.060mhz. If the bands are to busy with the contest, I'll
stay on 30m around 10.117mhz +- qrm. This is the fist of a series of
hikes to finish off the AT here in PA. I'm calling the four hikes my
Footsteps to Maryland Series of hikes. For more information check out

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ's PA AT QRP Hike

2008-05-19 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
I've been trying to hike my next PA AT Section, but the weather has been
wet and damp here. Looks like Thursday through Sunday will be nice
weather here in Pennsylvania so I'm planning my next hike. I only have
four more Appalachian Trail Hikes left to do and then I'll finish off
PA! So listen for Kangaroo Ed, WA3WSJ hiking the AT and playing QRP. If
the contest has 40m (7.030) and 20m (14.060) all tied up, look for
WA3WSJ on 30m around 10.116 mhz +- qrm. I'll be using my Pimped Out KX1
and my Black Widow Vertical without a pole on the AT. Hope to hear many
familiar calls while I'm out on the AT.

Date: 5/22 - 5/25
Time: mornings ~ 8am-9am evenings 7pm-9pm
Call: WA3WSJ

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Tent LED Light - Great!

2008-04-21 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I'll be hiking the AT here in Pennsylvania this weekend so I've been
stocking up on some trail food etc. While at Dick's Sporting Goods
today, I found a very cool tent light that hangs from the gear loft loop
of your tent. It has 24 ultra-bright LEDs in a circle and will last 30
hours on four AAs. It's 5 in diameter, .75 thick and weighs in at
6.5 oz with the batteries. I just returned home and installed the
batteries in it. Then I turned it on and WOW! It should fill my entire
two-man tent with light for operating qrp! This light look like a winner
for $9.99.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ Black Widow Vertical Article Online!

2008-04-17 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I received numerous emails wanting me to post details of my Black Widow
Vertical Antenna. I've added a file on my website which describes how to
make one. Please remember that an analyzer should be used to check the
coils for resonance at the frequency you want the lowest swr. Also
remember that this antenna is made for QRP, but will work at 100w for
casual operation - no 100w contest operation as the coil will heat up.

Now get out there and have FUN!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: 3-Band No Pole Vertical for the Trail

2008-04-16 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hi fellow QRPers,

Today I was testing out my Black Widow Vertical before I hit the
Appalachian Trail next weekend. I threw the coil up at four feet using
25lb test fishing line and hooked up the radiator and six radials. It
loaded up on 20m, 30m and 40m perfectly without using the tuner in my
KX1! My worst SWR was 1.4:1 on 40m with 20m 1.0:1 and 30m 1.2:1. I then
tuned around and heard 9A2HF Franc, from Croatia from my backyard. I
called him and we had a nice QSO. He gave me a 589 with QSB. My whole
antenna weighs in at less than one-pound excluding the 25' of coax! I'll
use this antenna for my up-coming AT hike. If you hear WA3WSJ next
weekend - work me for a nice Kangaroo Ed QSL Card.

RE: [Elecraft] Is the K3 shipping estimate really accurate?

2008-03-14 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello,

Elecraft's shipping estimates are not accurate. I had ordered a K3 from
them in August of last year with 50% deposit. I waited no word, I waited
, no word. I then called them in late December and was told,
sometime after February of next year. I then pulled my K3 order and
asked for my $1300 back. Since then I have purchased a radio that I
really love. I might still purchase a K3, but not until Elecraft gets
their act together and has them ON THE SHELF. I'm now looking to buy a
HF/VHF/UHF rig, so the K3 will wait for a couple of years. That's
probably how long it will take them to have a K3 on the shelf.

Elecraft was not ready to start selling K3s and they know it. This
situation has left me with, a bad taste in my mouth concerning
Elecraft. Oh yes, I have built a K1, K2 and a KX1. All are great radios
and all arrived here in a REASONABLE time period. I can't say that for
their K3.

[Elecraft] New IC-703+ is Great!

2008-01-26 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I tried to purchase a K3 last year, but it wasn't going to happen until?
I then purchased an Icom 703+. This little beauty is just fantastic!
I've been playing with it for about a month now and I really like it.

Here's what I don't like:
1.menus (I'm use to them by now)
2.Can't easily connect a paddle with a computer.(change menu on fly)
3.only one antenna connector

Here's what I like:
1.Price: $699
2.size
3.construction is very nice (solid)
4.auto tuner (best I've used to date)
5.internal keyer works great

Overall I really like my 703+, but it's no K3. But, I also bought it off
the self-hi! I plan to use this rig portable not backpacking as it's to
much for that. My KX1 will always go with me on the trail. I sold my K1
and K2 anticipating a purchase of a K3. For now, this won't probably
happen for another year now. I'll wait until the K3 can be purchased off
the self - maybe two years?

So if anyone needs a portable rig, I would recommend the Icom 703 Plus.

p.s. Just worked Hawaii from Pennsylvania with the 703+ on 20m CW 5W!
703+ receiver sensitivity is just great!

72,
Ed, WA3WSJ

[Elecraft] Another Mod to my Pimped Out KX1

2007-12-15 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello fellow PBs,

Yes I've added yet another modification to my already pimped-out KX1.
I have trouble zero-beating signals so I installed a K6XX Visual CW
Indicator in my KX1. This allows me to tune to within +- 20hz on a
signal and all I have to do is tune until the LED starts blinking to the
cw.

I used the map light on my KX1 as my indicator, but as many of you know,
it's on the front side of the KX1. When out in the field I grew tired of
always lifting my KX1 to see the LED.

So I bent the Map Light LED straight up and drilled a hole in the top
cover of my KX1. Boy, what a nice difference! I now can easily see the
LED while tuning. If I need a map light, hardly never, I can still just
point the KX1 where I need it. I almost always wear a LED headlamp at
night out on the trail.

I'm now looking for a small 1/4 black hole plug to insert in the empty
LED hole.

[Elecraft] K3 - Can't ship them out the door?

2007-12-07 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I grew tired of waiting for a K3. Called Elecraft today and they said my
August order would not be shipped out until after January
sometime. Never heard of ordering a radio and having to wait around six
months for it - maybe longer!

I cancelled my order and asked for my deposit back. To bad Elecraft
can't ship their premier product out the door in a timely manner. And
yes I've been a big fan after building a K2, K1 and KX1.

So now I'll Xmas shop for a new rig! It won't be a K3 - to bad.

[Elecraft] Tri-Band Dipole and KX1!

2007-11-13 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I've been hiking with Guy, N7UN, and as some of you know he's a rocket
on the trail. He usually brings along a tri-band diople to use on the
trail. His dipole is a 40m dipole and he just connects less wire for 30m
and 20m. I thought I'd build one and try it out.

I started with a 20m diople and tuned it. The wire is # 24 gauge
stranded whit with 19 strands. For the center I used a panel mount BNC
connector. After tuning 20m, I tied a fishing swivel to the 20m end and
also installed a female snap connector. I then did the same for the 30m
connecting wire, but used a male snap connector on both wire ends. I
then connected the wires and tuned 30m. Next I did the same for 40m.

I now have a dipole that works great with my KX1 on 20m, 30m and 40m. If
I want to work 20m only, I just put up the basic diople. If I want 20m
30m, I add a short piece to both ends. If I want 20m, 30m and 40m, I
then add the last wire piece on both ends. Or, I can put the dipole up
as a 40m antenna and just disconnect the jumpers to change bands. In
fact I just worked VE2PID on 40m. The whole antenna without coax
weighs-in at around 3 oz or less.

Thanks for the idea Guy, N7UN!

Check out my WA3WSJ's Place Website. I just added a PDF file on how to
install a 12V 1.5AH battery in your KX1. You can even charge it from the
external connector too! QST ran my similar article in the November
issue, but I've added more since that article.

[Elecraft] Polar Bear QRP Hunt!

2007-10-24 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello,

Please join the hunt for Polar Bears! On Saturday, October 27th, 2007 we
start yet another Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event Season. QRPers
known as Polar Bears will go out into the Full moon night and operate
our QRP radios. This is really a fun event and all QSOs are not
contest-type QSOs, but raw chews! To find out more about this unique
event, go to the EPA QRP Club's Polar Bear Site.

http://www.n3epa.org/Pages/PolarBear.htm

For this first PBMME of the season, the four founding bears will be
operating from Pulpit Rock on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania.
Some will drive up the mountain while others will hike the 2.5 miles to
the summit. I'll hike to the summit so why not give me a qso for the
effort!

Most of the polar bears will setup in a large field on the summit known
as the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society Site.

http://www.lvaas.net/index.html?content=pulpit

Why not bag a Polar Bear Saturday night during the hunt?

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: K3 vs Yaesu FT-450AT

2007-08-20 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
I sold my K1, K2 and TS-570D to buy an Elecraft K3, but it looks like I
won't have one in the near future? I haven't looked at the Elecraft Site
for some time now, but it looks like they are having problems producing
the K3 in a timely manner.

I only have my KX1 left to play outside qrp, but I do need a full
portable HF rig too. How does the Yaesu FT-450AT compare to the K3?

Also, can the K3 operate with a SCS Pactor Modem for HF WL2K?

[Elecraft] Zero-Beating Made Easy!

2007-07-13 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Don't worry about zero-beating to find the other ops frequency!
Just add a K6XX CW Visual Indicator to your K1, K2 or KX1. All you do is
tune onto a signal until the LED starts flashing to the cw. That's it -
your within +- 20hz of him!

The EPA QRP Club will begin selling the kits in a week or so. Nice small
board that nicely fits into most rigs. If you want a look at my kit
installed in my KX1 go to:

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: K6XX Visual CW Kits Gone!

2007-06-28 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Boy, all my spare K6XX Visual CW Indicator Kits are gone!

If anyone wants one of these really neat little kits, send an email to
the EPA QRP Club as they will take over selling these kits! Yes, I put
one in my K1 then my K2 and now in my KX1 and all work great. All you do
is tune onto a station until you see the LED flashing to the CW. That's
it no zero beating or messing around. You will be within +- 20hz of the
cw station!

Give the EPA QRP Club a week or so before they offer these little nifty
SMD kits. This is a great kit to build as a start into SMT Technology!
Remember you can mount this kit in any CW rig as all it takes is power
and audio.

For now you can still check it out on my website, but I took off all the
PayPal links.

Look for the EPA QRP Club to offer these kits soon.

[Elecraft] KX1 12V Power Mod Update.

2007-06-11 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I recently modified my KX1 or should I say my pimped-out KX1.
I bought six AA-size Li-ion 3.7V/750mah batteries. I installed them into
each battery holder, but wired the two battery holders in parallel
instead of in series. I now have a 1.5AH internal battery in my KX1. To
ensure all works safely, I also installed a protection pcb. This pcb
monitors the charge current and ensures each cell is properly charged .
It also protects the battery and the radio should a short occur in the
radio. It simply shuts off 12v power to the rig and will not allow power
to the rig until the short is removed.

I tested this by shorting the 12 + and - leads going to the radio. My
KX1 simply turned off and would not turn on. I then removed the short
and turned on the KX1 -- all ok.

On my last AT hike with my KX1 the rig shut off? I had to reset the
protection PCB. After doing so all worked great. Don't know why it shut
down as this was the first time that happened in many trips. Maybe two
hours of sending CQ?

Today I installed a reset switch to reset the protection PCB should this
happen again. I took a dremel tool and cut off a tiny switch on a fuel
gauge PCB I don't use to display the battery charge. The result is a smd
switch already mounted on a PCB about a 1/4 square and about .2 in
height. Perfect for a reset switch in my KX1.

All this is mounted on the bottom battery lid and fits nicely into the
KX1.

I'll soon post pictures of my KX1 reset switch modification on my
website.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ Trevor Boy's PA AT Hike Continues!

2007-06-09 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

After injuring my back during a fall on my last hike, I'm now ready to
continue my
AT hike across Pennsylvania. I'll be hiking from Swatara Gap State Park
to Rt 325 along the AT. This will be a 16.5-mile hike and I plan to
sleep on the trail one night. After I finish this section, I'll have
hiked from the PA/NJ Line to the Town of Duncannon, PA. I also have
played QRP the whole way -hi!

I've been trying to hike these sections for so long that my trail map is
coming apart. I had to tape it back together this morning -hi!

After this next hike I'll have hiked around 120 miles on the PA AT. I've
hiked past thirteen Pennsylvania AT Shelters and for most of this hike
Trevor Boy, my dog has been hiking with me. I must finish this hike
before my faithful hiking partner gets to old. Trevor Boy is eight years
old now, but still acts like a pup -hi!

If the weather holds, I'll hike next week maybe Thursday and Friday.
I'll post details as it gets closer to Thursday.

Only around 100 miles or so to finish Pennsylvania!

[Elecraft] Blue Moon QRP Hike Report

2007-06-02 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I decided to beat the traffic and left early for my Blue Moon QRP Hike
on Friday. I arrived at the Rt.183 AT Trailhead around 20:30utc. I then
hiked in to the pond area and surprized a rather large heron bird and a
big old bull frog. The bird took off into the air and the frog just
jumped into the pond with a loud splash!

I set up in the shade of the trees that surrounded the pond on the west
side. I started operating around 20:45utc or so. By 21:12utc I snagged
my first catch of the day -hi! It was Dan,KB6NU, from MI who gave me a
459. At 21:38utc my pond fishing produced another catch. This was a big
one for me WQ8RP from MI. By now the qrn was bad, but we made the
contact - thanks Hank!

The pond was now producing local qrm. Yes, the bull frogs started to
compete with each other for the loudest crooking award! It was so bad I
had to tightly fit my ear buds into my ears. Maybe they were warning of
the approaching storm? I now cast again into the great ionosphere for
another nibble and at 22:05utc I hooked WT8N in ME. Jack, WT8N, and
myself were having a great qso, but then the wind hit. I had to cut the
qso short and hike back to my truck before the storm hit.

By the way, all my QSOs were on 40m as 20m and 30m produced no nibbles.
I was really glad to work WQ8RP from the trail as this made my day. Five
minutes after driving down the mountain, I hit the storm. I guess those
bull frogs do know a thing or two -hi!

bull frogs do know a thing or two -hi!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ's Blue Moon QRP Hike QSL Certificate

2007-05-29 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

To celebrate the Blue Moon on May 29, 2007 I plan to operate on the AT
Friday, June 1st at a pond on the Appalachian Trail here in PA.

I just put the finishing touches to my special Blue Moon QRP QSL and
Certificate.

It's really cool! It shows a Full Blue Moon over a lake with a Blue Moon
Fairy holding a KX1 in her hand. It looks so cool! You don't want to
miss out on this one so work me Friday night. By the way the lake is
really a pond and I don't look nothin like that gorgeous fairy! But,
my KX1 looks exactly like the one on the picture!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: KX1 Battery

2007-02-06 Thread Edward R. Breneiser

Hello all,

While pack packing in the cold weather this past weekend, I noticed that
my pimped-out KX1 had dropped down to 2w power output after about a
hour on the air. I thought it was due to the batteries and the cold -
wrong!

Today I opened up my KX1 and checked each Li-ion battery with a
voltmeter. One of the parallel banks had all three of the AA Li-ion 3.7v
batteries reading 3.4V and the other bank 4.01V?

I found that a connection on one of the battery holders had come apart
and I lost one 11.8V battery bank! It came apart where the wire lug was
crimped to the battery case on the + lead of one bank. Instead of having
a 11.8V @ 1.5AH battery, I had a 11.8V @ 750MAH battery -hi!

I fixed the connection today and all looks ok.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ's PBMME Adventure

2007-02-05 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Most of you didn't work NU3E or WA3WSJ during the PBMME and here's the
reason.

John, NU3E, and myself hiked the snow-covered trail 5.5 miles to Eagle's
Nest Shelter on the Appalachian Trail on Saturday morning. As we
arrived, the temperature was a balmy 20 degrees. We set up camp
and then I fired up the KX1 and Bead-Wire Antenna. NU3E was so cold he
stayed inside his sleeping bag to operate.

I was inside the shelter operating my KX1. After two CQs K4BBE, calls me
on 30m. I think that's his call as I'll have to look at my log. We
exchange information and by now the temps are single digits!

Another CQ on 20m and another hit by an N5../M! We exchange info and now
the sun is just starting to set. The temperature also starts to drop
even lower!

It's now to cold to hold a paddle without two sets of gloves on so I
call it quits on trying to make more Qs. Safety first I always say. I
now need to warm up so I make myself a hot meal from one of those
dried-bag meals. My Esbit stove works great as usual and the hot meal
helps, but now the sun has set and it's dangerously-cold out with a
slight wind.

I make a campfire and it's now around 6pm or so. John comes out for
around a half hour or so, but the frigid cold is to much and he retreats
back to the warmth of his sleeping bag. Around 7pm I call it quits as I
can no longer keep my hands from going numb! I slip into my sleeping bag
to stay warm.

Oh yes three couples show up at the shelter with two large dogs and see
I'm in there and move down the trail towards John. I heard them yelling
and scramming until 1am?

Sunday morning I awake to a frozen world. The inside of my tent has ice
on it and the outside of my sleeping bag is covered in ice! Being in the
shelter, there wasn't enough air flow to prevent condensation.

No way was I going to operate Sunday morning as the outside temperature
is now zero degrees with winds. We both just wanted to pack up and get
out of there.

The hike out was an education on hiking in frigid weather. We had a
strong wind blowing in our faces. After around a half-mile or so, I
noticed or felt something odd. I couldn't feel my nose - this was a
first for me! I then blew out the frozen mucus from the lining of my
nose and felt much better. I should have worn my full-face ski mask.

Sleeping in my new bag was good. In fact I was to warm and had to open
the bag, but early Sunday morning some time I closed it up and hunkered
down for the big chill!

My KX1 was not bothered at all by the frigid cold as it just kept on
playing.

I had a good time experimenting with backing in frigid weather. Not to
much radio time as it's just to cold to sit there and operate. Would I
do it again? Yes, but only when the temps are in the 30s or so during
the day. Evening temps don't matter much to me.

Until my next adventure,

[Elecraft] Eagles Nest QRP Polar Bears

2007-02-02 Thread Edward R. Breneiser

Hello all,

Look for John, NU3E, and myself, WA3WSJ, operating from Eagles Nest
Shelter on the AT this weekend. We will hike in the 5.5 miles and setup
camp at the shelter. We'll be looking to make Qs from the AT in PA. Look
for us on 20m,30m and 40m. John may also work additional bands.

Don't forget to look for us on Sunday morning too as we will operate
until around 10am or so. I plan to make a special qsl card for this
activation.

The first qso I have will receive a polar bear keychain.

The first UK station I work will receive a very nice Canadian Polar Bear
Coin. I've been trying to give this coin away, but no UK takers to date!
Where's that G-Land Polar Bear been?

[Elecraft] AT PBMME QRP Backpack trip --COLD!

2007-02-01 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I bought a new sleeping bag, bag liner and air mattress for this one!
John, NU3E, and myself, WA3WSJ, will hike in 5.5 miles on the AT to
Eagles Nest Shelter, PA late Saturday morning. We will then setup camp
at the shelter.

Look for us on the air Saturday late morning until Sunday morning. We
plan to spend the night there! Weather forecast is for snow Friday and
brutal temps in the single digits late Saturday evening into Sunday
morning.

Look for WA3WSJ on 20m 30m and 40m around the qrp frequencies. I will
use my pimped-out KX1 with a Bead-Wire Antenna.

We plan to have a campfire Saturday evening to help us stay warm. If you
work us, please wait after sending your call as we will have to take off
our gloves to return your call!

We will truly be out-in-the-woods on this one!

[Elecraft] Pimped Out KX1 on AT

2007-01-09 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

This past weekend I tried out my new pimped-out KX1.
My newest KX1 trick is to take out the 1.5v AA batteries and install
six 3.7v AA-size batteries. I just rewired the battery holders in
parallel and installed a 5A protection board so the Li-ion batteries
charge properly and are protected from an overload or short.

This gives me an internal 11.8v 1.5AH battery inside my KX1.
While hiking on the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey this weekend,
I had a dozen QSOs using my KX1 with my Bead-Wire Antenna. I checked my
battery in the pimped-out KX1 and it was still at 11.1v. Plenty of
power for more Qs!

The 2oz. Bead-Wire Antenna quickly went up and I was on the air Saturday
morning making Qs.

If you decide to install a few 3.7v Li-on batteries in your KX1, please
check out my KX1 Pimp Pot Site. You must install a protection PCB so it
is safe to charge and for shorts etc.

My next KX1 Trick will be to put my pimped-out KX1 in a Pelican 1060
Micro Case for travel and hiking.

[Elecraft] RE: QRO who works?

2006-12-27 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all you Who-Does-the-Work QRPers,

When ops who work a QRP station say, I'm doing all the work here.

Do they realize that the QRP operator:
1.probably built his own rig
2.probably built his antenna
3.probably took the time to actually study code
4.probably is very patient
5. etc etc.

I ran the CQWWCW Contest as VP5ED. As VP5ED I had over 1200 Qs in 48
hours running 5W of power with my Elecraft K2. I ran and held pileups
for hours running QRP. So who was, doing all the work?

Was it the 100w stations? Was it the KW stations?

NO--- it was the QRP Ops trying to break my QRP pileup!

Be careful- be VERY careful when you say the receiving station, is
doing all the work.

This QRP op built his transceiver and antennas; planned the Dxpedition;
paid for the Dxpedition; modified antennas to use for the Dxpedition and
hauled all his QRP gear to the Island on a plane. Went through customs
and had to take my gear apart not once, but twice. Set up all my QRP
gear at the site including some antennas.

After doing this, some ops still say, the receiving station is doing
all the work. NOT

Have a Happy New Year!

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: KX1 12V Internal Battery

2006-12-05 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I just received the two PCBs to install in my Elecraft KX1 bottom cover.
I also purchased six AA 3.7V Li-Po batteries. I plan to wire the two
11.8v/750mah packs in parallel so I'll end up with a 11.8V/1.5AH
internal battery. One PCB will be wired to the battery pack to protect
it. The other PCB is used as a gas gauge to show the charge on the
battery. All this will fit on the bottom cover! I'll rewire the power
plug so I can charge the battery without taking the cover off. When I'm
finished pimping-out my KX1 Battery, I'll post pictures on my KX1 Pimp
Pot Web Page for all to view.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Kangaroo KX1!

2006-12-03 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Well I now have what's called a Kangaroo KX1!
It hiked 2-miles up the mountain to Pulpit Rock on the AT.
I setup my BW Vertical and my KX1. I then hit the tune buttons and NO
POWER OUTPUT! I then put my KX1 under my shirt to warm it up. I waited
about five minutes and hooked it up to my BW - full power output 4w!

I had to do this every qso and make the qso short so I could keep my KX1
transmitting in the cold weather that was below freezing. So during the
breaks, I was walking around with my KX1 tucked on my belly under my two
shirts and two fleece jackets just like a Kangaroo thus the name
Kangaroo KX1.

I will troubleshoot my KX1 soon with freeze mist. I plan to first put my
KX1 tuner in the CAL mode to bypass it and see if the problem is in the
tuner. If not then hit the transmitter with Freeze-Mist to find the bad
component.
