2020-10-26 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Hi Tim,

We’re still here and have been back accepting and repairing RSAs for many
months. Elecraft is in good shape - Fortunately the fires were never close to
the factory, which is not in a forested area.

I apologize for any confusion with your repair request in May Apparently
there was a miscommunication on your request.

I’m forwarding your email directy to our support team
and they should be in contact with you tomorrow (Tuesday).

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 power supply fan noise

2020-05-23 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Hi Peter,

If the amp is on, there needs to be at least some PS fan activity at a low
speed to cool the PS in idle.

What s/n is your 1500? On later s/ns we changed a resistor in the ps fan
circuit to slow them down a bit more.

An alternative is to swap your ant 1 and 2 connections, putting the 6m ant on
ANT 1. Then you can listen to 6m with the amp off.

In the interest of keeping the list from becoming overwhelmed with OT Corona

do not post covid-19 / corona virus topics here.

There are a number of other social media lists and sites, and of course ham

Hi Lee,

We definitely do! :-)

If you emailed later on Friday afternoon or over the weekend, their response
can be delayed on Mondays as they work their way through the weekend backlog.

Also our CS team was hit hard by the seasonal flu (-not- the Corona virus..)
the last two weeks and was down to 50% staffing on a number of days.

Re: [Elecraft] 30 Day Price increase Alert

2020-01-07 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Clarification on my prior posting:

The price increase note below does not directly apply to pre-orders for the K4.
We're finalizing pricing now as we get a better feel for parts pricing, tarriffs
on parts, local assembly cost here etc.  We hope to keep it reasonably close to
the deposit amounts.

One other item: its a 28 day notice, not 30.  ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Internal and External display resolution

2020-01-02 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Dave,

The K4's internal LCD has a resolution 1024x600, which is very sharp.

We also demonstrate the K4 with a large external 1920x1080 HDMI compatible
monitor. Our h/w should support up to 4K external monitors.

Note that rather than just mirroring the internal color LCD of the K4 on the
external monitor, we can display data independently from the LCD at the same
time in whatever format we wish, such as the full screen spectrum and waterfall
display we've been showing at the shows at 1920x1080.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500: Widely varying drive requirement - same frequency, different antenna

2019-10-26 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
This is not unusual when the loads presented by the antennas (or tuner) to the
amp are different. This can even be true when the SWRs are identical if the
actual +/- reactance of one is different than the other.

This is most noticeable on lower freq bands where the amps gain is typically
higher.

Hi Tom,

I apologize for any confusion on K4 status. We really appreciate the support
you and others have given us with your K4 orders.

We’ve been very busy keeping our heads down and working hard finishing key K4
features and getting everything lined up for production, including getting
critical long lead parts on order with committed delivery dates. We are being
very careful about getting this right and not cutting corners.

I’ll make sure to post updates more often here and via direct emAil to K4 order
holders as we converge to keep everyone informed and up to date. We’ll also
make more posts describing some exciting features we are adding to the K4
design.

We’ll be off line through this weekend at the ARRL Pacificon hamfest. I’ll
make sure to post here links to any video interviews we give there on the K4
and its newest features.

fine for me. In fact, I made over 200 contacts (FT8, and mostly stateside) on
160m last week.

The KAT500 is "supposedly" limited to matching up to a 10:1 SWR. That added
4:1 balun really brought the 160m impedance down to a manageable (and matchable) level.

My ladder line feed is about 160 feet, then the balun, and finally about 13
feet of RG8XU to the KAT500.

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 Loaded Whip Antenna - Elevation and

2019-08-27 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Guys - lots of very good info here, but we are beating this into the ground.

Lets end thread thread for now in the interest of maintaining a reasonable list
SNR. ;-)

Go out and operate, experiment with antennas, including the AX1, and see what
has been discussed in this thread is best for you in your operating situations.
 And of course, have fun!

Our current plan is to keep the K3S in the product line as long as demand is
sufficient to economically produce it. We are certainly still shipping new K3S
orders weekly and have sufficient parts inventory to keep manufacturing them at
this time. We also are still strongly supporting existing K3 and K3S owners.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 and Linux Infrastructure

2019-06-03 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
I apologize if we have created any confusion on this topic.  (Yup - we have been
a little busy as of late with the K4 introduction ;-)

To be clear - we do not plan on granting open access to the main CPU or K4
internal operating system. That would be a impossible situation to support and
it would significantly impact product stability.

At this point, any additional internal software applications developed for the
K4 will be coming via Elecraft.

Of course we will certainly will have a robust external API for the K4.

In the interest of reducing list bandwidth overload, lets end this thread at
this time.

Re: [Elecraft] Fan speed

2019-05-30 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
The KPA1500 uses a more aggressive fan speed table for 6M, versus the lower HF
bands. In general there is more immediate component heating on 6M for a given
power (especially in the LPF and other areas outside of the PA transistors), so
we start the fans at a lower heatsink temp.

Also, when using very high dissipation modes like FT8 and JT65 on 6M at
1000-1500 W, we strongly recommend setting the minimum fan speed to at least 1
or 2.

*Yes. Each RX in the K4D, or HD, can receive via the two rear BNCs, plus any of
the three SO-239's if the KAT4 is installed.*

Will one need to take the K4D completely apart if later a decision is

Hello

I am just about to drop a down payment on a K4 transceiver, but first I

have a few questions.

1- does the K4 come with the ATU included? Why is there a KAT4 on the

pre-order list.

Like on most of our radios, the KAT4 ATU is optional and can be added at any
time. This allows those using the K4 full time via an external amp with ATU
and external antenna switching to lower their cost.  This also applies to
those who are dedicating a K4 as an IF radio for VHF/UHF/Microwave.

  > 2- how many USB ports on front panel?

The K4 has one USB-A on the front, two USB-A on the rear.  If more inputs
are
needed, an external USB hub can be used on any of these.
Mouse, Keyboard, Flash Drive etc can be plugged into these ports.

The K4 also has  one USB-B on the rear (with internal sound card and mutiple

comm ports like the K3S).

3- how many SO-239 connectors on rear of K4? Photo shows 4 but I wonder

if that’s the rear of a K4 or K4D?
All three K4 versions start with one SO-239 for Hf-6M.  Three total when the

KAT4 is added.
There is a 4th rear position for an antenna connector when a future planned
VHF/UHF dual-band internal module is released later next year. That will
accommodate a SO-239 or type N socket.

4- is there I/Q output for either or both VFOs?

Yes, over Ethernet.

5- if I plop down $1500 on a K4 today, can I send the other $2500 prior

to start of shipping and get moved to the 1st shipping group? Or is that a
limited time offer?
As long as we have not filled it up, we'll move you up to the 1st shipping
group.  We'll post when the first group is full, which will happen soon.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft / IC-7610 comparison

2019-05-20 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Hi Brian,

Its a regular RJ-45 Ethernet jack on the rear of the K4. (I believe it is
gigabit ethernet..) Usually your network router provides the wifi to connect
wirelessly in the house (also including a DCHP iP address server.)

Embedding wifi in the radio is problematic as it is a rapidly evolving
technology with regular changes in security features, speed etc that are best
handled by router sw and hw upgrades. Its unlikely wifi will stay constant
over the radio's life.

Yes, but in those days, there was a lot less electronics in vehicles to

Re: [Elecraft] KFL3A-400 vs. KFL3C-400

2019-05-02 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Greg,

Very little. Both have similar passbands and protect the subsequent IF and DSP
stages from overload by signals outside of their passband.  Note that we also
cascade the K3 and K3S DSP filtering after the crystal filters to further
improve the ultimate rejection of the filters.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 XCVR FREQ

2019-04-01 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Brad,

I apologize for the confusion on this.

The following K3/K3S menu entry enables the K3/K3S to send out the transmit
frequency on the AUXBUS cable to the amp and external tuner.

In the K3/K3S KAT3 menu item, tap the 1 key to set it to "KAT500=Y".

It’s documented in the current shipping KPA1500 owners manual, Rev B1 (2/12/19),
on page 20 at the bottom. (Its also on the website.)

I am noticing that with my KPA1500 connected to my K3S via the aux cable
that XCVR FREQ always shows 0. All other functions between the rig and amp
seem to work such as band changes and TX COUNT always shows the counted
frequency. XCVR FREQ is a constant 0 so any ideas from the group on if I
have missed a setting somewhere to ensure that this works. I am under the
impression that the KPA1500 should be getting and displaying correct
frequency info from teh K3S.

Thanks,

Brad

I brought my KPA1500 to Lubbock for the CQ WW WPX SSB Contest. Like a good

downloaded what is actually version 210, and installed it. Next, I checked
the integration with the IC-7610, KPA1500, and antenna switch. Much to my
chagrin, the KPA1500 did not understand CI-V frequency information above
3800 KHz and throughout the 160m band! My next thought was to panic, but
good Air Force troubleshooting techniques came through.

The antenna switch understood the radio, but not the amplifier. It worked
in the ARRL DX SSB Contest. Loading an previous configuration did not
change the symptom. I downloaded version 207 and that fixed the problem!

BTW, I downloaded version 210 three times and the same symptom occurred with
each. I tried all other HF bands without failure. I suggest a quick look
by someone who understands (wrote) the update. As long as you stay below
3800 and don't use 160m, you won't experience this problem. Of course, the
KPA1500 frequency counter took over, but that is not "smooth" at full power
and I don't like red LED's shining in my face.

73, and good luck in the contest! Bill, K8TE

In this case the for sale email below appears to be legitimate. The email

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 v. 2.10

2019-04-01 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Yes, we agree - the delay and averaging for forward power for just the LCD
display was incorrectly set to too low of a value in 2.10.

Fortunately this is only a LCD display issue and does not impact the Power/SWR
bargraph or internal operations of the amp.

We'll get this fixed in a new f/w update this week.

This is totally normal for the amp in high duty cycle carrier modes like RTTY.

exhaust temp which is not bad. Should I be concerned here? I am also a
big fan of external fans. My previous amps all had external fans which
helped thinking about putting several small fans along the bottom

Folks,

This remote station dxcc (or contesting) operation ethics and policy pro/con
thread is now closed.

As regularly noted here previously, OT amateur radio policy, ethics, and

incredible amount of list bandwidth from a limited number of posters,
overloading our other list readers

In the interest of keeping the Elecraft list readable, without posting volume

Let's end the thread for now to avoid this one expanding any further. Unlike FT8
we need a fairly high signal to noise ratio here.  ;-)

In general, please try to avoid getting into arguments on the list over what is
the 'proper' power to run for any mode of operation. Like politics, these

[Elecraft] KPA1500 F/W 2.09 Beta released. Also new KPA1500 Utility.

2019-03-01 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
KPA1500 F/W 2.09 Beta has been released to the elecraft website. It can be
downloaded from the support f/w- s/w page in the K-Line\KPA1500 section.

F/W 2.09 provides a significant improvement in ATU tuning results. It also an
improves the communication of current radio frequency between the K3/K3S and the
1500 via the AUX cable. For those of you upgrading from 2.0, see the full
release note list on the Support Firmware and Software page link below.

Both of these issues were highlighted in the recent "KPA-1500 tuner question"
thread on the Elecraft email list. Our thanks to Scott-K9MA, Walt-WA1KKM, our
regular KPA1500 Field Testers and others who have helped us quickly address
these issues.

We also have a new KPA1500 Utility (Windows Version 1.19.2.21) on the same
KPA1500 page. Mac and Linux versions will appear soon. This utility version has
several improvements and also fixes a bug where the erase ATU memories Utility
button did not always perform the erase. (The erase always worked when done
directly from the KPA1500 front panel menu.)

The Support Firmware and Software page can be found at:
https://elecraft.com/pages/firmware-software

The new KPA1500 Utility, 2.09 beta instructions , release notes and a link to
the beta download zip file are at the lower part of the KPA1500 section.

For those who are familiar with the beta install process, the direct link to the
2.09 zip file directory is:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/KPA1500/firmware/beta
