will be with a forthcoming update. In other words, it cannot be used

nicely even though it means Ying out one of the cable wires.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the update. I am running 2.02 and the rest of the latest
firmware. I have been merrily using my transverter but not for a few
weeks as I moved the shack around and need to make up another power
cable. If this is the case, can we have a heads up from Elecraft please?

Any ideas? Am I forgetting something?
Are you assuming as I did that as you have the mic gain set, it should
be putting something out? Once you go into data mode, the mic gain
becomes a line gain and is totally separate. I still do not believe
this is made clear enough in the manual. Of course, it could just be me :)

As has been said for a full year now, the K3 is a complicated piece of
gear. At least initially. A complicated radio requires understanding
and effort on the owner's part. If you wish not to exert the required
effort (no shame in that), there are several good entry-level rigs out
there by competent manufacturers, both foreign and domestic. But
there is no reason to demand reinvention of the front panel and
associated circuitry merely because you find certain features awkward
at first.
With respect Kent, (and I know your email was not aimed at me) I did not
ask for any such reinvention of the front panel. I simply stated that
it is easy (and frustrating) to overwrite memories. I am also not
afraid of exerting myself to learn the radio. My point is that it
should not be possible to 'accidentally' overwrite a memory. I do not
need multiple stacking thingummies or anything like that, I simply want
to be able to put memories in there and not be able to overwrite them by
not concentrating enough. During a contest or some other frantic time,
my brain does not always cover every eventuality. Come to think of it,
it is not that much good at other times :)

As an Elecraft lover for over 6 years I have no wish to use another
radio. I simply wish to be able to use my K3 as easily as possible and
as it is basically firmware driven, I see no problem in wishing the
radio to cover my humanity. If nobody asked for functionality or
reported issues, the K3 would not be where it is today.

much higher power output than the K3...even trying to
drive my AL811H amplifier with the K3 set to 70W and
loud talking only gets me to about 120W output where
the K2 at 70W SSB peaks over 600 Watts using the tuner
wattmetersomething isn't going right with this K3

You will get terrific support from Elecraft but they would expect you to

[Elecraft] SSB output with new firmware

2008-05-04 Thread Ian J Maude
much higher SWRs are tolerated at
lower power settings).

Recovers to original target power level after mismatch is corrected.

  * CW QSK further refined, with smoother mute/unmute in the presence
of QRN and QRM.

  * SSB TRANSMIT BANDPASS EXTENDED AT LOW END. Improvement is about 2 dB
at 300 Hz, 3 dB at 200 Hz, and 6 dB at 100 Hz. Additional
improvement possible via TX EQ.

  * SSB TX POWER CONTROL improved. Set ALC for about 5 bars (rarely
6+) using MIC gain
control, then set CMP and POWER as desired. The RF power bargraph
shows approx.
peak power when you whistle or shout, but will typically show well
below peak power
during normal speech. If you’re using an external peak-reading
wattmeter or power
amplifier, adjust POWER as required while observing the effect of
speech peaks.
If you find that an SSB power setting higher or lower than for CW
is often required,
you may wish to compensate for this using the CONFIG:TXG VCE menu
entry.

Technical Note: Our latest MCU and DSP code uses minimal amounts
of ALC, consistent
with analysis done by Leif Asbrink, SM5BSZ. (His findings and
recommendations can be
found on his web site, www.nitehawk.com/sm5bsz.) The general idea
is to keep
transmit drive just below where ALC can cause splatter on speech
peaks, rather than

apply ALC heavily to achieve additional compression.

  CONTROLS:

  * A-B SWITCH: 1st tap copies frequency only; 2nd tap within 2
seconds copies mode

and filter settings.

  * VFO LOCK is no longer cancelled by VFO tuning controls (RATE,
FINE, or COARSE).

  * TUNING EITHER VFO ACROSS MULTIPLE BANDS now brings the other VFO
along
with it, so that both VFOs will always be on the same band. This
eliminates the problem
of bands getting out of sequence due to wide tuning excursions.
(Later, we’ll allow the
subreceiver to be on a different band from main if CONFIG:VFO IND
is enabled.)

[Elecraft] K3 Transverting

2008-05-04 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi all,
Having done the upgrade this morning I thought I would test via my XV144
on FM. It would appear that the transverter is shutting down for some
reason after a short over. I have to change bands back and forward
again to switch the transverter back on. My initial thought is heat but
touching the area of the transverter PA, it is pleasantly warm but
certainly not hot. I have tried altering the XVn PWR setting to L0.5mW
but the same thing happens. It would also appear that I cannot vary the
power output using the PWR control on the K3. The menu info in the
manual says I can but not how to do it.

Any ideas please as the transverter works really well otherwise and I
get good audio reports through the repeater.

[Elecraft] K3: SSB output power

2008-05-04 Thread Ian J Maude
OK, I was waiting to see if the firmware sorted this but it has not. If
I hold tune or use a key, I get full output power on my external meter.
On SSB I get about 40-50W showing on peaks for a setting of 120W. This
is the same whether into my trusty old Sommercamp YP-150Z or via the
Bird into a Termaline. It is also exactly the same into a tuned
dipole. This is also with the TXG VCE set to +3dB!
If I connect the 101Z or another radio into these meters, no problemo.
So can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I use a Goldline in the
front connector and currently it is on front panel high with a mic gain
of 10 and compression of 15. That kicks up the ALC just fine.
The K3 is #455 with the stock 2.7kHz filter with FRQ set to -0.91 as per
the label on the filter and no gain.

Ideas please??

[Elecraft] Re: K3 Bias voltage

2008-05-01 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi all,
I think we need to understand what is happening here. I am pretty sure
I have this correct.

The front panel socket is the same as the Kenwood one apart from the 8v
being present on a different pin. However, this is a bit of a
smokescreen as it actually has very little to do with bias voltage. The
bias voltage as I see it drops a voltage onto pin 1 which will be the
mic audio line. This has been done for speaker mics and handies for
some time. So the bias voltage is nothing to do with where the 8v line
is on the front panel socket. Unless your mic requires the 8v line
which would only normally happen for desk mics (?) I do not see a
problem. The vast majority of desk mics will have a blocking capacitor
on the mic audio line.

Do I have it correct?

Also I can't get more than 8 watts carrier output on 6M.

[Elecraft] K3 Configuration

Can I redo the K3 config on 5W with the PA physically in place or do I

TX ALC is on but my TXGN HP Pr80 is down at 20, much lower than I have

OK, this is what I did.

I set KPA3 to 'PAio nor'. I then started at the beginning and did the
Synthesizer calibration, then set the reference oscillator to RWM on
9996 kHz. I then ran the 5W calibration and then, after enabling the PA
again, the 50W calibration.
The output seems much better now but i am going to have to get it on a
decent calibrated wattmeter to be certain of actual output power. TXGN
HP Pr80 is now at 32, in line with other postings.
The question is, how did it change? I had set all of this initially of
course in the build.
In the manual, once you have finished the calibrations, it says to turn
off TECH MD. Could it have something to do with this? I had not turned
it off as I like to see things like PA temp etc and I believe you have
to have it on to see the extended displays.

Sorry if I seem thick, I am just trying to get my head around this.

Toby Deinhardt wrote:

Hallo Ian,

You don't really have to turn off the TECH MODE. The manual, imho,
tells you to (suggests that you) turn off the TECH MODE, so that the
chance of changing a sensitive menu item by mistake is reduced. I
sometimes have it on and sometimes have it off.
Thanks for that Toby. I am trying to work out why my original
calibration had changed. It can only be from firmware updates and I
guess I was wondering whether having TECH MD set to ON could cause this
issue?

The SSB power level problems discussed recently on the reflector don't
appear to be caused by the calibration at 1mW, 5w and 50W. Elecraft
is, afaik, working on a fix, and I assume it will have been dealt with
in the next major firmware update. fingers=crossed
My calibration was somewhat off. Having run through it again, I am
happy enough with the output of the K3. At 50W on tune I can get 400W
from my Ranger 811 (about what I would expect). On SSB however, it is
only about half that, regardless of mic.

I never thought to turn it up! For those of you who have not seen this,
in data mode, the mic gain (if data is set to line) is completely

You will need to set MIC SEL for that mode to the appropriate source,
presumably LINE IN, and then set the mic gain for the correct drive level.

Done that, the receive is fine :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Equalization Memories - Missing?

2008-02-17 Thread Ian J Maude

WB6MND wrote:

Equalization settings. Is that correct?

I was kind of hoping that the EQ settings were saved when you save a
config? Having a licensed XYL it would be handy to save 2 configs, one
for me and one for her. Of course the settings would be different for
each of us.

73 Ian

It would be extremely helplful to have such memories.

For example:

I would like one Rcv Eq setting for weak CW signals, where I kick up 400 hz
+10 db or so and drop the other eq bands. This would help me pull the weak
CW sigs out of the noise better. Obviously this setting would not be used
for SSB or strong CW sigs, where I'd want a flatter eq curve.

I'd like one Tx Eq setting for local ragchew work, maximizing bandwidth and
freq response for best audio quality. Obviously, this setting would not be
good for DX. For DX, I'd want more punch where the midrange is kicked up
and the freq extremes are diminished.

Having several eq memories would allow this flexibility. As it is, each set
of eq curves for different purposes must be manually entered. That's
awkward and time consuming.

If I've missed something and this feature already exists - great. If it
doesn't, it would be nice to have it.

[Elecraft] Microphone compatibility

2008-02-13 Thread Ian J Maude

I cannot keep quiet any longer! :)

What is all the noise about microphone compatibility? We are radio
amateurs, it should be simple enough to wire a microphone for a rig.
Just look at the pin outs on the mic and the rig and wire accordingly.
The circuitry is not exactly complex!
If we buy *any* radio we pretty much know that the mic wiring is going
to be different. 4-way, 8-way, RJ45 connectors, the list goes on. What
ever the manufacturer decides is the right way for them, this has always
been the case.
It really is quite simple. Is your microphone a dynamic type? If so,
wire it for Kenwood and it will work. Does it need a voltage? Look at
the diagrams as I mentioned before. Good grief! Elecraft are building
the rigs for us now and we are still moaning! ;)

[Elecraft] Re: electronic product standards

2008-02-13 Thread Ian J Maude

Charles Harpole wrote:
The telephone style plug now arriving on so many rigs answers the
manufacturers' dream because they are so difficult to self-install
that the customer is nearly forced to purchase specific mics ... THEIR
LINE.
I have to disagree with you here. Making adapters for these is really
so simple. a 1 metre network patch cable costs about £1. Cut it in
half and you have 2 adapters to wire as you wish. It has never been easier.

The use of different pin-outs is cause for consumer anger because the
choice is not based on good engineering practice but on the desire to
sell their own differentiated product to those who have also purchased
their line of products. Because most of the K, I, and Y crop of mics
are so equally bad, the only way to make their product different is
not via quality but via a unique pin-out plug. Shameful business
practice that only hurts the consumer.
Again a rather cynical viewpoint that I disagree with. They have simply
standardised their own way as there is no 'standard' to comply with.
The reason Bob Heil's mics sell is that THEY ARE BETTER, and he has
made an easy line of adapters, too.
Well I will not disagree with you on the mics, Bob's contribution has
been terrific and he also has a good business head. However, I would
rather make my own adapters for pence. As for his headsets, they plug
right into the back of the K3, no adapter required.

Elecraft made a good showing by trying to copy the Kenwood standard
even if there is a problem with SOME CASES with pins 5 and 6
reversed. That I have the time to explain the obvious shows that I am
retired, and fill in the blank.
Not sure what obvious you are referring to Charles. A *lot* of mics
work with the K3 without any adjustment at all. My Proset plugs in the
back, my Goldline in the front. I can use any Kenwood mic I own etc. I
simply don't feel that rewiring a mic is a big deal for anyone (unless
they are blind or have problems with their hands of course).
Actually, looking at this discussion sideways, the rig must be fantastic
if all we can find to complain about is the mic wiring :)

The transverters cannot be directly connected to the K3 like they can

to the transverters like a non-Elecraft transceiver.
Then what is the point of the K3 transverter interface? Does it simply
provide a low level output?

By the way (and very important) the signals from the K2 to the
transverter are *NOT* RS-232. Look at the connector label on the K2 -
it says AUX I/O. Just because it is a DE-9 connector and does
contain 2 signal lines (TXD and RXD) that can connect to a computer
serial port does not make it an RS-232 connector - the signals that go
to the transverter are unique K2 internal signals.
I fully understand this Don. That is the reason I stated serial and not
RS232. Perhaps I could have been more pedantic :-)

Well said Rick!

urge you to vote with your checkbooks. Simply refrain from ordering these
new products, cancel your delayed orders if you must and, above all, hold
your tongues. This reflector is sponsored by Elecraft as a forum for
exchange of hints and kinks and a channel for both formal and informal
support. I find it amazing that they have not yet chosen to make it a
moderated forum where someone can censor the cheap shots that have, frankly,
gotten out of hand. My Mom taught me If you can't say something nice, don't
say anything at all. Of course, that advice does not hold universally but
in a public forum like an email reflector it should be a cardinal rule. How
would you like it if someone posted billboards on your house announcing
every mistake you had ever made? What if some of them were inaccurate,
incorrect or marginally libelous? One of my mentors in business, a highly
decorated entrepreneur, media pundit and investor, taught his people to
Praise publicly, criticize privately. Please take that
advice.Thisreflector is one of the great things about Elecraft and I
urge you all to think
three times before posting criticisms: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it
helpful? If the answer to any of these questions is no or maybe, be a
decent human being, give them the benefit of the doubt and don't post it.
Send email directly to Elecraft instead. They will read it and respond
appropriately.

Elecraft is a company, a collection of imperfect individuals trying hard to
do as a team what no one person could do alone. They make mistakes as we all
do. I have never seen another company so willing to admit their mistakes and
inform their public. Yes, they have published some bad news. In fact, they
publish more bad news about product development delays than many companies
... because most companies don't publish bad news at all! Nor do they
provide a public forum where their failings can be discussed as easily as
their successes. I admire Elecraft and wish all my other vendors were as
candid. Heck, I wish any of my other vendors were as candid.

If you can't tolerate product delays, don't order new stuff. Don't order
anything unless it is available off the shelf. Given the vitriol of some on
this reflector, I should advise them never to order anything without a
signed, custom contract of performance. They won't get such a contract from
ham radio vendors but they won't be let down, either.

Elecraft has delivered a series of outstanding products and developed a
well-deserved reputation for technical excellence, product innovation and
the finest support in the amateur radio product business. The K3 is the best
radio I have ever used, right now and despite lacking a few promised
features. In fact, I was able to say that six months ago when it had far
more rough edges than remain today. I, too, pine for the sub-receiver. I
even sold my FT-1000MP to make room for the K3, knowing full well that until
the sub came out I was compromising my ability to work split-frequency DX
pileups. I can deal with that. If you can't, just wait.

But above all, please be civil. The Elecraft team are a handful of the
finest engineers, business people and human beings I have had the pleasure
to know. They do not always deliver their dreams on schedule but they
definitely do deliver and they deserve better treatment than some of you are
dishing out on this reflector which they sponsor. The majority of
contributors to the reflector make me proud to be a customer. The few whose
whining, accusations and rants are spoiling this corner of our hobby make me
ashamed of the low level of social training some of us received as children.
Please take your venom elsewhere.

Now, can we return to our regularly scheduled programming of Elecraft
product questions and answers, hints and kinks and general good will?

Thanks and 73,

Hi all,
I have tried to stay out of the noise on this but I felt I had to comment.
I know the delay in the 2nd Receiver is frustrating but I think the fact
that one of the owners of the company will mail the list to say that
they are reworking because they are not happy with the result is
fantastic! It would have been so easy to simply release it 'as is'.
However, they have decided it is not up to the standard they were
looking for. I cannot think of another company so committed to
quality. I would much rather wait and get a great product.

On the subject of the Omni VII, in my opinion it is not an Omni at all,
it is a Jupiter. VHF first IF etc. The Omni VII was a far better radio
IMHO. You may have different opinions of course :-)

I am sure if the gentleman who is thinking about cancelling his K3 order
were to ask, there would be plenty of people looking for his place in
the queue ;-)

It was mentioned a little while back by another lucky recipient.

Although I have paid in full, the invoice shows 0.00 for the back ordered FM

invoice will come with the filter when it is sent, and I will pay tax on it
then.

This actually could work in your favour. If you paid tax on the item
when it had not been shipped, you would probably still have to pay tax
*again* when the item arrived at your door, they would not easily link
the two shipments. In actuality, a filter will probably be shipped in a
padded bag and be dropped through your door by the nice postman. My
guess is that you will not pay any tax at all on the filter when it arrives.

see for some things. It might also provide a focus on some requests

another way to merge requests?

I know you will have your own list but it could prove useful.

[Elecraft] K3 filters

2007-11-30 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi all,
I am going to add a narrow filter to my K3 order for data modes mainly
but also CW I guess :-)

Which narrow filter do you think I should choose? I am only using the

Yes. The KBPF3 is an array of pre-mixer bandpass filters rather than
a post-mixer roofing filter, so it does not count as one of the five

There are 5 slots in total Larry, so the answer to your question is no.
I cannot imagine that you would need so many filters so close in
frequency anyway.
As for the PSU/Speaker, Elecraft have mooted that one might eventually
be forthcoming.

If you have stereo headphones and/or two speakers plugged into your
K3, you can use the AFX (audio effects) function. This creates a
simulated stereo or binaural audio space that is hard to describe --
you'll just have to try it :) For some operators it reduces
listening fatigue when compared to monophonic audio, and can even help
improve signal copy.

To use AFX, simply tap the AFX switch (just above the VFO B knob).

You can select different AFX variations using the AFX MD menu entry
(MAIN menu). I prefer DELAY 5, which is the default. BIN creates
binaural audio via phase shifting, while DELAY1-5 simulate stereo
using a short delay between the left and right channels.

2 questions Wayne..

1) Can you do this with only one receiver installed?

2) Do you ever rest?

can have 5 filters in the main RX and if you have the second RX you can
have another 5 in there.

[Elecraft] K3 Internal Voice Keyer

2007-07-30 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi all,
A question about the K3 voice keyer. I find these things frustrating
sometimes because of all the required button pushing. My ideal would be :-

1. The ability to record several messages (I know this is obvious!)
2. The ability to have either a single run or to have it looping with a
user variable spacing
3. (This is important to me and I have not seen it anywhere as yet) The
ability to simply key the PTT to stop the playback and override the
recorder without having to press stop!

Is this going to be possible?

I disagree with that statement. The inline fuse is to protect the lead

[Elecraft] Thought this might be of interest

2007-07-17 Thread Ian J Maude

Copied from the Southgate club site, thanks guys.

New Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Regulations From 20th July

On 20th July the new Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations,
Statutory Instrument 2006:3418, comes into force. This is a result of
the EU Directive 89/336/EEC being repealed by the new EU Directive
2004/108/EC.

Amateur Radio is mentioned in two places in this important EU Directive:

/(2) Member States are responsible for ensuring that
radiocommunications, including *radio broadcast reception* and the
*amateur radio service* operating in accordance with International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) radio regulations, electrical supply
networks and telecommunications networks, as well as equipment connected
thereto, *are protected against electromagnetic disturbance*. /

and

/2. This Directive shall not apply to:
…
(c) radio equipment used by radio amateurs within the meaning of the
Radio Regulations adopted in the framework of the Constitution and
Convention of the ITU (2), unless the equipment is available
commercially. Kits of components to be assembled by radio amateurs and
commercial equipment modified by and for the use of radio amateurs are
not regarded as commercially available equipment. /

The second item is important in that it means Amateur Radio kits are
specifically excluded from the expensive and time-consuming process of
complying with the Directive.

*These new regulations apply to equipment placed on the market after
20th July 2007*. Equipment placed on the market prior to this date can
continue to be produced in compliance with the old EMC Directive
89/336/EEC for a further two years.

[Elecraft] VCO test

2007-07-14 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi All

Up to Alignment test (p 60) onto the VCO test. So far all resistance
checks and previous tests check out within tolerance. Freq probe has
been replaced with known good one too.

Problem - with Freq counter in tp1 I should see 8-10 Mhz with freq on
about 4000.1khz. I do not. Display shows 0Khz steady. Have re
checked and heated all connections, replaced Q17 (just in case) but
reading does not change.

Any pointers?

Thanks M0RGB Gary

This is a very interesting post. Several of us have asked if the
enclosure the KAT100 and transverters come in is available as we had
projects for them. To my knowledge they are not available like the EC2
enclosure. It makes it interesting for someone who built the KAT100
into an EC2 case right at the start to change back. I would like to
know the answer to this one as well :-)

Neal,
I may be oversimplifying your request, but I think what your asking is to move your KAT-100 in your current EC-2 into the EC-1 enclosure.
The EC1 enclosure is the same size as the K1. The KAT100 will not fit
in it. What Neal wants (I believe) is the enclosure that the
transverters and the KAT100 come in. I have found no information on
this. Forgive me if it is available.

Have you looked through the FAQ on the website for the K3? All those

Hi Tom and all who responded to my query on this. Thanks to you all for
spelling it out in simple terms for me, it is what I needed :-) Chriss,

(thanks Chris) and it was precisely what you stated above Tom.
For those who might need the info in future, the Linearamp UK 811 has
16v and 190mA at its PTT connection. So, the K2 should work with it
perfectly. I will be attempting this today once I have done a little
work with the filters to finally get my voice sounding right. This
retirement thing is damned hard work but I am finding enough time to get
a few things done that I have been promising myself for years :-)

Thanks again to you all.

OK, well the amplifier instructions simply state that the phono socket
(on the 811), when earthed by the transceiver, puts the amplifier into
TX mode. The amp does have an ALC socket but I guess I can ignore
that. So my question is, when I key the KPA100 via the K2, will the key
output send a ground to the amp PTT input?

Sorry to sound so thick, I have not dealt with large amps before.

[Elecraft] Back to the SSB board

2007-01-21 Thread Ian J Maude

Hi all,
Well I have finally started looking for the fault on my SSB board after
about 9 months! For some reason I have no receive when the board is
plugged in. If I short out pins 1 and 3 of J9 and J10 I get receive no
problem, so it would appear to be a fault on the SSB board.
I have checked the crystals to ground, all seems OK. I have checked the
voltages on the pin diodes and again, all would seem well. In fact,
other than a few small stray voltages, the only major anomaly I can find
is a voltage on U4-3 of 6V on receive. The manual states 0.6 volts.

I would love any thoughts to point me in the right direction please?
