I also removed the RF board and instead of using the Elecraft BNC with the filter toroïd , I connect directly the dummy load to the block header on the RF board inside the KX3. [Elecraft] Outdoor operation... camping time !!
Hi to all of you !! I did my first attempt of using a long wire with my Elecraft K2 last weekend. I was amazed how the K2 with the KAT2 tuned everything !!! A simple 28 feet long wire with 2 radials of 16 feet each. I used a small rock with a small rope to finally bring my wire up in a tree at about 24 feet high. Let the kid do that part it is a fun part for them to throw a rock up in a tree a familly activity... ;-) I did a few contacts in CW on 80m and 40m with only 5W. I was also amazed that I could use all HF bands only with this small size antenna. You don't need to bring an antenna analyzer and loose all your spare time to adjust a dipole... just the K2 and the wires and the small key ! It seems that this kind of antenna sometime perform better that a dipole at very lower high installation I put a few pictures on my website in the «Sortie amateur prise 2» section sorry for the french description... but pictures tell a thousand words anyway... ;-) http://web.mac.com/jfmenard Look under «Sortie amateur prise 2» tab. Many KX1 owners have asked for 80 meter coverage, notably Bruce Prior, N7RR, who pointed out that 80 meters is a great band for traffic handling at night (in both the CW and SSB segments). Up till now, Bruce has been taking his KX1 and a second rig that covers 80 meters on his extensive backpacking trips. Our new KXB3080 option will lighten his load a bit. 80 meters is also a popular field day and QRP band, and is especially active in the Eastern U.S. and in Europe. Band noise is lower in Winter, so this is the perfect time to give 80 meters a try. The dual-band KXB3080 module installs in the same location as our 30-meter-only module, the KXB30. The KXB3080 is very easy to add to your KX1, since all but two components are surface-mount, pre- installed at the factory. (This was necessary in order to provide both bands in such a small amount of space.) Also supplied is a small PC board that mounts in place of the original low-pass filter inductors (L1 and L2). This board includes a relay that configures the low-pass filter for efficient operation on either 80 or 40/30/20 meters. The KX1's firmware has been updated in conjunction with the KXB3080. The new firmware adds: * Full 80-meter band coverage on transmit and receive * Additional receive-only coverage: 1000 kHz to 5000 kHz (reduced sensitivity outside the 80-m band) * Programmable scanning (great for monitoring quiet bands, waiting for signals to show up) * Variable-rate fast tuning: 1 kHz in ham bands in all RX modes, 5 kHz outside ham bands in USB/LSB modes We have several beta testers lined up for the KXB3080, and will be supplying them kits in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, I've been having great fun on 80 meters with the first 4-band KX1, even with a wimpy 40-foot random wire. In addition to 80 meter transceive operation, I can copy many AM stations from 1.0-1.6 MHz. This broadcast band coverage should prove useful feature for field operation. If you have any technical questions about the KXB3080 option, feel free to send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] One question I'm sure to get is whether the KXAT1 ATU is usable on 80 meters. The answer? Yes, but the KXAT1 wasn't designed to cover this band, so it will only help with specific end-fed wire antenna lengths to be determined. It will of course help with tweaking of nearly-resonant antennas, such as portable whips and ad-hoc dipoles. * * * N O T E * * * Please don't call about the KXB3080 or new firmware just yet. We will announce the price of both in late January, and take orders then. [Elecraft] CW filter question
Hi, I am doing a complete aligment of my K2 during the weekend... just for the fun of learning and in the KSB2 SSB manual, they said to set OP1 for FL1 (filter on SSB board) for both SSB and CW. I undertstand what is OP1, etc... But my question is: Could I choose other than OP1 for the first CW filter ? My setup for CW only is FL1 = 1.5 kHz and FL2 = 500 Hz... both are well aligned on 600 Hz peak with a spectrum analyzer. I don't want a wide filter for CW.. like OP1. I understand that basic K2 crystal are optimized for 700 Hz and below signal filter. And if I was using only CW without the SSB board, I will be using the basic K2 filter only anyway... so I think I am OK, but I only want to make sure that including a SSB board do not change my understanding of how filter works in the K2. Thanks Don, Dan and Bill. I'm shutting off my K2 for a little «inside work» !!! ;-) Best 73 and Happy New Year !!! Le 05-12-29 à 11:16, Don Wilhelm a écrit : Jean-Francois, If I recall, that statement in the SSB manual does not say you must (or should) set the wide CW filter to OP1, it only says that one CAN do that - so if it is not desirable for you (it is not for me either), then leave your CW filter widths as they are as they are. Adding the SSB option does not change CW in the K2 but it does increase the filter choices by adding the OP1 fixed bandwidth filter. If you want more detail on K2 alignment than is in the manual, in particular the Dial Calibration and setting the filters, you may want to look at my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com or the mirrors at www.qsl.net/ w3fpr or http://home.earthlink.net/~w3fpr - Spectrogram is adequate, but if you have access to a full blown spectrum analyzer, you can use that instead. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I am doing a complete aligment of my K2 during the weekend... just for the fun of learning and in the KSB2 SSB manual, they said to set OP1 for FL1 (filter on SSB board) for both SSB and CW. [Elecraft] 1 antenna, 2 radios... a second prototype !
Hi, I did my second «One Antenna, Two Radios» interface. I had this time an ajustable RF amplifier to compensate for the loss by splitting the signal. I only had what is loss... around 3 dB, no more. The design could be used for more than 2 input/output because the gain is «ajustable». I also had a few LED to show the status when TX, ON or even when the rf amp is ON. If I disconnect one radio, I am able to switch off the amp because there is no more attenuation, so I will keep my signal a «original» as it were before. I really think that I convinced that I can easely add another K2 in my shack the next step will be... One mic, two radios... and two K2's !!! It promptly comes back on, but the frequency changes to a previously used frequency. This was not a one time happening, but can be duplicated. It seems to be so on all bands. The only options I have is the KAF-2, (which I love), and the noise blanker. Other than this problem, all is fine, and I am very pleased with my little sweetheart of a rig. When your 'run' slows down, this arrangement lets you search for multipliers on the same band in between CQs, and enables you to check adjacent bands as well. I have used this set-up with a pair of barefoot K2s in QRP contests only. Also, there are two sets of antennas, 80m through 10m, 100 metres apart. YMMV. 73, Ken ZL1AIH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Very interesting Larry. I posted your website URL on a local ham discussion forum. Your kit look very nicely built. Excellent. Le 05-10-21 à 12:49, Larry Phipps a écrit : I have developed a new project kit that should be of interest to Elecrafters. It is an inexpensive, accurate digital dummy load/ wattmeter. It is patterned after the concept of the mini modules in that it is board based with no cabinet, although it does come with an aluminum base plate to avoid the chance of accidental shorts. Size-wise, it will fit in an EC-1 or similar case if someone wanted to do a custom installation. It is microprocessor controlled, temperature compensated, and has a large backlit LCD display with multiple calibration screens. Accurate calibration requires only a DVM. It is rated at 20W, and uses metal oxide resistors, but there will be a 120W option which will use thick film power resistors mounted in a watertight cast aluminum case filled with cooling oil. I am still running tests on this option. The larger dummy load will replace the bottom plate when the 120W version is purchased. I am posting this announcement because I want to determine the level of interest before setting final pricing, based on parts volume. Please email me off-list with pre-orders to help me determine volume. I am also interested in any comments on the design that could be incorporated before production boards are ordered. For pics, specs and other details, see my website at www.telepostinc.com, and click on the LP-200 link. Target price is $100, and I should be ready to ship 20W units in about 2 weeks. 1- Will it be more difficult to tune T5 instead of asjusting L30 ? 2- Will it be standard in K2 kit now or it is just optional ? 3- Will we loose precision on the VCO stability, or any other manner regarding performance when applying this mod ? I'm planning to buy and build another K2... very soon... ;-) 73 Le 05-10-06 à 18:31, wayne burdick a écrit : The K2’s VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator) may be susceptible to low-frequency modulation by very large power transformers, such as those in linear amp power supplies and antenna rotator controllers. Such modulation can usually be eliminated by simply moving the equipment away from the transceiver. In difficult cases, magnetic shielding can be used, and we've created a modification kit for this purpose (Order #K2VCOSHLDKT). The mod kit provides a smaller replacement core for transformer T5, a high-permeability ferrite sleeve, and associated hardware. The ferrite sleeve is installed over T5, greatly reducing the effect of nearby strong magnetic fields. In addition, slug-tuned inductor L30 must be electrically disabled since it, too, is affected by magnetic fields. With L30 out of the circuit, the VCO inductance can still be adjusted, if necessary, by slightly squeezing or spreading the turns of T5. The kit is priced at $10. Re: [Elecraft] Problem trying to use Spot on K2
You can also use the SPOT button with the RIT feature to ZERO BEAT de station... Select a CW station activate de SPOT feature... activate the RIT feature... decrease the RIT by 700 Hz... and finish to ZERO BEAT the station now with the main VFO knob... once ZERO BEAT... un-select the RIT... a 700 Hz will be added because you release the RIT.. and you will be, at least very near, the same frequency of the CW station. This trick works with all radio that have a SPOT and RIT feature... very common on most recent rig. 73 On Wednesday, October 05, 2005, at 06:19AM, Tom Hammond [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Jerry: I guess I don't understand at all how to use the spot feature. For all I know my K2 may not even have it. I just listened to N0SS 2 different wav files and still can't figure out what I'm doing. When I hit the Spot button, same as Rit only held longer I get SE L 143. The number changes as I turn the main tuning dial but the tone completly wipes out the signal I'm listening to, no matter how loud it is. Maybe I need one of those LED Tuners I've been reading about. What am I doing wrong?? Invoking SPOT is NOT by pressing-holding RIT, but by pressing-holding the PRE-ATT button! If you press-hold RIT, you're invoking the PF1 user-programmable function, which happens to default to the MENU | ST L (sidetone level) setting. If your ST L value is currently set to 143, it's probably MUCH too loud for 90% of the spotting uses you'll use it for. Try this... 1. Press-hold PF1 (RIT) to go to the ST L menu and then crank the VFO knob DOWN to set ST L to a level of between 25 and 40. This should give you a CW sidetone level which you can still hear adequately while sending, but one which won't 'swamp' received signals when you attempt to use it for zero beating. Exit ST L by pressing MENU briefly. 2) Be sure you have your tuning RATE set to show the last two decimal places in the frequency display. 3) Find a signal on the band... doesn't have to be a blindingly strong signal but let's not start with a water-weak signal either. Maybe find someone who is 569 to 589. 4) Press-hold SPOT (PRE-ATT) to turn on the SPOT tone. This should allow you to hear both the SPOT sidetone AND the signal from the other station. 5) Now, slowly crank the VFO knob until the tone of the received station matches that of the SPOT tone. As the two tones come closer together (esp. when within 30-40 Hz), you will start to hear a secondary beat note between them (this is the difference tone between the two higher-pitched tones). As you continue to tune the VFO, this beat note should get slower and slower until you can easily hear individual beats. At this same time, the tone of the received station should 'disappear' behind the SPOT tone (that's what I was trying to demonstrate in the WAV file you played). Once you have matched the two tones, such that the received signal disappears behind (and within) the SPOT tone, you're zero beat with the received signal. One VERY IMPORTANT point of using the SPOT tone for zeroing in on a received signal is to not have the SPOT tone so darn strong that it completely swamps out the received signal. What you should try to do is to find a SPOT tone level which more or less equals the volume of the tone from the received signal. The closer the two tones are in level, the more easily you can zero beat them and the more easily you should be able to hear the beat note between the two signals. Learning to properly zero beat a signal is not necessarily an instantaneous success. It might take a bit of time to master it, but it is NOT difficult, and once you 'get' it (the technique), you will never lost it again. If I can help in any way, please drop me a note. [Elecraft] Tenna Dipper, part II...
Now That I have finished my basic Tenna Dipper Kit. I need to put it in an enclosure with a little bit bigger switches, buttons BUT, BUT... one thing In this kit, if you need to know the frequency that the Tenna Dipper is, you could just listen to the CW tones, but you will not be able to know too easely at which frequency you are. very anoying... :-( Why do not make an external connector on the K2 that is link to the frequency counter probe connector on the control panel. After you have selected the CAL FCTR function, connecting the Tenna Dipper External frequency test point to the K2... you will be able to use your K2 to display the actual frequency of this little antenna anylizer and now be able to use more easly the Tenna Dipper on many different frequencies instead of using it always at a pre- defined frequency, because it is too hard without proper external indication. [Elecraft] Tenna Dipper Kit... a small solution !
Hi, For people that do a lot of field radio operation, carrying an antenna analizer like a MFJ-259B could become anoying and also a waste of space in your luggage. We nearly always tune the antenna at the same frequency on the same band. So instead of carrying a big box, why not carrying a small box that will do this antenna ajustment... If you are using a K2 with the 60 meter transverter option then the power control on the K2 will control the output of the XV50. Nothing will change until you do a CAL PLL after adjusting C22. == There are a number of methods of getting the 4000 kHz xtal oscillator on frequency by adjusting C22. Without a frequency counter, one of the easiest is to tune in 20 MHz WWV on your IC-756Pro. Use a short piece of flexible insulated wire for the antenna on the 756Pro and bring the end of that antenna near the 4 MHz oscillator in the K2. You'll hear the 5th harmonic of the 4 MHZ oscillator beating with WWV (best to use the AM mode on the 756Pro and wait for those times when WWV is not transmitting a tone). When you hear the heterodyne beat between the 5th harmonic of the K2's 4 MHz oscillator and 20 MHz WWV, adjust C22 to zero beat the heterodyne. Anytime you adjust C22, you must follow with a CAL PLL. Then check your K2's frequency dial readout accuracy. 73, de Earl, K6SE -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I must admit that I an very tempted to incorporate the indicated improvements. However, I would have no means of evaluating the results and therefore look to the remainder of those on this list for further opinion. Summary of the mod's are: from Jim: Change R14 from 1K to 2K. Change C34 from 2.2hF to 0.22 uF. Add 1uF in parallel with R15 from Stewart: Change C34 from 2.2uF to 0.47uF Change C31 from 2.2uF to 1uF Change C20 from 0.33uF to 0.047uF Is the situation severe enough to warrant an official mod for this? This resistor should be 560 ohms. If you built yours using the information in our preliminary User's Guide, or the recently posted / updated schematics now on our homepage, then you would have used the correct value. However, if you followed the instructions in Mark Dulecy's original article (hosted by W5BIG), then you may have used a 470 ohm resistor in error. Whereas your receiver will still function, the wrong resistor value results in a 5 db attenuator with a somewhat lower output impedance than the intended 150 ohms. It shows the KNB2 supplied replacement 2.7 k ohm RF-R88 which is in parallel with the output leg resistor on your header. This explains why the output resistor should be 560 rather than 470 ohms. Very soon we will replace the five individual diagrams on our homepage with a single hybrid schematic / block diagram showing a big picture view of the K2, and the relationship between each of the un-modules. This diagram will be included in our updated User's Guide which will be released in just a few days. [Elecraft] K2 Voltage display... inside or outside... your choice !!!
Hi, After many e-mail exchange last month regarding K2 voltage display, I finaly did a modification tonight. First, before my mod, the K2 was powered on a Astron RS-35M power supply with a real output voltage took at the K2 connector of 13.75V and the K2 display 13.1V. I decided to replace R10 196K 1% on the control board with a +/- 25 turns 250K trimmer... very precise trimmer !!! I adjusted the trimmer to display 13.7V on the K2 display. After I tested the K2 on an external batterie with real 13.1V the K2 now displayed 13.1V. So if I change from different power source with differente voltage... the K2 now indicates the proper value at least the real external voltage. Unfornunately, I soldered the trimmer so I don't have the new value... :-( But anyway, I am sure that the value would be MY value, and could be a little different from K2 to K2 the point is : this mod seems to work... for me. i will leave the trimmer there for now. It is difficult to change the value without a extremely small plastic screwdriver and it looks nice My first real mod... ;-) I did a few macro photos of the mod... http://homepage.mac.com/jfmenard/PhotoAlbum29.html 73 PS Many thanks to Don W3FPR who believe that I can do it !!! ;-) == Jean-François Ménard / VA2VYZ == ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Homebrew un-mod kit
Hi to all guys of like to experiment in their K2, I was inspired by un-mod kit that was posted on the reflector a few weeks ago I did mine. So when I want to remove a module to isolate a problem, or simply to make more space to work in the K2 when trying some experimentation, simply replace the module removed with ready homemade jumpers !!! Some jumpers, like one for the KSB2, contain the capacitor. So no need to remember if we need something else!!! Some jumpers that I made are shorter than the connector inside the K2 because there was no need for the purpose to be longer... this is why I marked them all with a red dot, to make sure there were installed all aligned on PIN1 of each connectors inside the K2. Re: [Elecraft] Question about Buddipole antenna
Hi, I have and use the Buddipole over 2 years now and I'm extremely satisfied !!! It is like a big LEGO block that you can experiment antenna world. Very robust and quality construction. The antenna is very effective. Many QSOs, could be built in minute, light weight, small size, for a backpacker... a must !!! 73 Le 05-08-04 à 10:44, Yves Dussault a écrit : Any body using the Buddipole or Buddistick antennas? [Elecraft] No more CW requirement in Canada starting today.
**Industry Canada Introduces Alternatives to Morse Requirement for HF** In July 2003, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2003 held by the ITU in Geneva, Switzerland, deleted the mandatory international requirement for proficiency in Morse for access to the HF bands below 30 MHz. The revised International Radio Regulations leave it up to individual administrations to decide whether to retain or delete Morse as a national requirement. Since July 2003, more than 25 administrations have deleted the Morse requirement for HF access. Immediately following WRC-2003, RAC conducted an Internet survey of Canadian amateurs on whether Canada should retain or delete Morse. 66% of the statistically significant response of more than 1300 Canadian amateurs either recommended deleting, or would accept deleting, the mandatory Morse qualification, but also recommended other changes. This resulted in discussions between RAC and Industry Canada, following which RAC formally submitted a proposal to the Department recommending, among other things, that the mandatory Morse Qualification be deleted but also that it be retained as a voluntary qualification for reciprocal operations in countries that have not deleted the Morse requirement. Per Canada Gazette Notice DGRB-003-05 dated 30 July 2005, Industry Canada has adopted elements of the RAC Proposal on Morse Code and Related Matters and has removed the mandatory requirement for the Morse Qualification for access to the HF bands below 30 MHz. Effective immediately, HF operation on the bands below 30 MHz has been authorized by Industry Canada for: a) amateurs who were certified with only the BASIC Qualification prior to 2 April 2002; b) amateurs who have been certified with both BASIC and ADVANCED Qualifications; c) amateurs with only the BASIC Qualification who were certified after 1 April 2002, and who achieved a pass mark of 80% or greater; Those amateurs with only the BASIC Qualification who were certified after 1 April 2002, but who achieved less than an 80% pass mark, will either have to qualify in Morse, write the Advanced or re-write the Basic examination to obtain HF privileges. This latter requirement is related to a decision to increase the BASIC examination pass mark to ensure that candidates have been tested in all areas of the syllabus. Amateurs who need to confirm their examination marks should contact their Accredited Examiner. Accredited Examiners are required to retain marks for at least three years. Also effective immediately, the pass mark for the BASIC Qualification has been raised from 60% to 70%. Amateurs wishing to have their certificates annotated with a Morse Qualification may still do so by passing the Morse examination at 5 Words Per Minute. Holders of only the BASIC Qualification may now construct, install and operate transmitters from kits that have been commercially designed and packaged. BASIC-only holders still are not authorized to modify or install and operate modified commercially manufactured equipment. The above changes and others have been incorporated in revised RICs 2 and 3. All amateurs should review and keep on hand these revised documents. Don, Do you think after the voltage will be adjust according to an external DC voltage and an accurate external volt meter, if we change later the DC source supply, like a battery with a little bit different voltage, instead of a standard power supply by example, do you think there will be or might be another voltage offset or it will be calibrate for any kind of DC supply in the range of, let say, 12V to 14V ??? Any suggestions? Steve, W2MY ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
