[Elecraft] Bad crystal filter ?

2015-09-18 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Working with my newly constructed K3S today, I noticed that receiving through
the FL4 crystal filter (400 hz, 8-pole) was noticeably suppressed. Through the
FL3 (1.8 kHz) filter, an RTTY signal would be nice and strong with good S-meter
indications. Going to 400 Hz the signal would nearly be lost and I could not
decode it. Going to FL5 (250 Hz), the S-meter would pick up again with strong
signals.

There's not much to check on the Config menu except the FL4 GN and it's at max
(8 db) - not much change.

Is there something else I should do to deal with this ?

Re: [Elecraft] Bad crystal filter ?

2015-09-18 Thread James C. Hall, MD
In response to W4TV Joe's question:

The frequency offset for the 8-pole crystal filter is 0.00 Hz.

The Pitch is 650 Hz on the K3S. And the Mark for RTTY is the standard 2125 Hz.

I've got a new 400 Hz filter on its way so I'll see what the problem is. I just
hope it's not an RF board. I took ESD precautions very seriously while building
it so, fingers crossed.

[Elecraft] Controlled envelope SSB

2014-12-08 Thread James C. Hall, MD
I found a most recent article in QEX on controlled envelope SSB most
interesting in that it could yield close to 3dB in power by eliminating the
overshoots in filters, etc. I know contesters are always looking for the next
3dB they could attain and certainly this could help DX'ers and ragchewer's
alike. It said in the article that Flex Radio has already started to experiment
and program their radios for this.

I was just wondering if this was a possibility for the K3 ?

[Elecraft] P3 problem - was Problem retrieving FW

2014-06-30 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Thanks to Dick for pointing me to manual FW loading. This worked very well and
I now have both my K3 and P3's FW updated.

The reason I felt this was necessary:

Our Field Day was one typhoon after another with multiple heavy downpours and
thunder/lightning. Through multiple shutdowns, our FD team faced this adversity
well and we made the best of it - and had fun. We did however sustain some
minor damage thought to be due to lightning bursts. Our digital station
consists of my K3 / P3 with TXBPF filters, LDG 200 tuner, and an early model MH
Microkeyer. The pre-FD checks were perfect. However, just before tee-time, when
we turned everything on, we noticed that the computer was not seeing audio and
the P3 showed no signal activity even though the radio was fine and signals
were multiple.

Despite all attempts, we were left with trying a FW update. I took the K3 / P3
home and did this. However, the P3 still does not see signals. I put my signal
generator on the K3 at 50 uV and still no signal seen. Taking just the K3 back
to the FD site, I hooked things up without the P3, hoping the audio issue would
be corrected. No dice. The Microkeyer appears to be damaged as well. The audio
was redirected directly from the computer to the radio, bypassing the
Microkeyer, and that worked fine.

Bottom line is I need to get my P3 fixed and maybe I can get an
out-of-production Microkeyer fixed as well. Ideas ?

[Elecraft] [KX3} Unable to engage screw into KXFL3

2014-01-11 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I received my filter board for my KX3, but the ½”, 13mm screw will not
engage the screw hole in the filter board. The screw, which is exactly the
same as the screw that was already there, barely touches the filter board
when fully installed. Is there some trick to getting this screw to work, or
should I look for a longer screw ?

[Elecraft] Fwd: Band decoding with TXBPF's

 Subject: Band decoding with TXBPF's

 Hello:

For Field Day I'm planning on using the AUX I/O band data pins to feed the
built-in band decoder of the TXBPF's I built a couple years ago. I won't be
using the output of this decoder for antenna switching - just band following
with the BPF's. I'll be utilizing an older Microkeyer for digital operations
and this uses the AUX I/O for FSK and PTT.

Looking back in the archives, I presume I will need a DB15 Y-cable which I
see Elecraft sells and I presume ABCD on the TXBPF 5-pin DIN is the same as
0123 on the AUX I/O DB-15. I just need to make up this interface cable.

One other thing - my K3 is serial number 616, so I have the KIO3 board
without the pull up resistors. This is more specific to the TXBPF, but does
this unit need those resistors; that is, do I need the upgraded KIO3 board ?

[Elecraft] ERR 12V

2013-02-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I was working the NAQP today on 10M and was doing fine and then the PA got
bypassed and I got ERR 12V on the screen and to check the circuit breaker.
Well the circuit breaker is not popped. Turning the radio on and off did
nothing and I'm forced to run QRP - well, SP. Changing bands also did
nothing to rectify the situation. The antennas are resonant with good SWR. I
checked the Config menu and the relay works when going from On to Test, and
the fan seems to work although it's very quiet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for the quick response. The consensus is that it is a
tarnished connector problem - a known issue. My serial number on my K3 is
#616 so definitely an early model. I'll get in touch with them Monday for
the repair kit.

So far, I'm holding my own while QRP J

[Elecraft] K2 - starts in transmit mode

2011-07-15 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I hadn't started up my K2/100 in awhile and I wanted to give it some
exercise today. When I hit the power button, I was surprised to see it in
transmit mode with a hum/tone coming from the speaker. I immediately shut it
down, disconnected everything and hooked up a battery and a dummy load and
set the power to minimum. Pushing the power button revealed the same
symptoms - increasing the power showed the LED power meter increasing in
power until it got close to 100 watts and then showed Hi Cur. I powered down
and then shut it off.

I don't know what to try next, that is before attempting to do a MCU reset.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] 6M problem - resolved

2011-07-08 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello All:

Just a note to update you on my K3 problem with 6M. It turned out that the
8.215MHz trap on the KAT3 board got fried during FD. Gary came to the rescue
and I got the new parts today and installed them no problem. After tuning
the trap, I was able to get 1:1 SWR with the dummy load connected on all
bands.

It's now back in service and looking good ! J

Thanks everyone for the help and, ultimately, to the god folks at Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 6M problem

2011-07-02 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Rich:

Yes, my problem is that I have terrible SWR when the ATU is in BYPASS and
the antenna is a known resonant load. I also tried to tune into a DL and DID
get a 1:1 SWR, but when returning to the antenna with the ATU in BYPASS, the
SWR was around 8:1.

I'll be opening up the K3 to inspect the L10/C10 area on KAT3. That appears
to be the problem area. Gary has sent me an email stating they now have
different parts for that area.

Thanks again.

Jamie,
In your note on the 6M problem you didn't indicate if you tried the K3 in
the
ATU 'BYPASS' position. I had the problem of a high SWR on 6 Meters when the
ATU
tried to find a match on my 6M yagi with a known relatively good 1.2:1 SWR.
In
the BYPASS mode the SWR looked fine. Using the ATU produced a much higher
SWR on
50 MHz.

If your K3 internal SWR display indicates a good SWR in the BYPASS mode, but
the
ATU cannot find a good match, there is a fix. I received a BETA firmware
update
along with suggested parameter changes of some of the hidden MENU settings
(need
to turn TECH MD on) which addressed the 6M ATU problem. The ATU in my K3 now
performs as it should on 6 Meters. Local friend K2PI also had the same
problem
which was resolved with the BETA firmware update.

If your 6M SWR is good in the ATU BYPASS mode, drop Elecraft tech support a
note.

Ron, yes, you are quite correct about the ATU - it does work on 6M. :) I
just never had to use it. Just for grins I switched in the ATU and could
only get 3.9:1 SWR. Taking the cable off the ANT connector and putting it on
my MFJ analyzer, it shows 1.3:1.

Sigh ... Worked perfectly on 6M prior to taking it to FD.

Jamie,

Did the antenna selection on the K3 get toggled to ANT 1 for
six meters? Remember the ATN1/ANT2 is stored on a per band
basis. If the rig was used in 6 with ANT 1 at field day, it's
likely that ANT 1 is still selected!

The weird part about this is that it hears great on 6M ! If the SWR was
truly high, I shouldn't be able to hear squat. Engaging the PR6 preamp does
its usual thing, increases signal (and noise a bit).

It's like the SWR meter is just deciding to indicate high when it's not -
and of course the output power is folded back.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 6M problem

2011-07-01 Thread James C. Hall, MD
OK, more data points. Since I was getting good SWR at the mW level with the
analyzer, I cranked the power down to 1 watt and pressed tune. Got good SWR
and 1 watt out. OK gently walked the power up and tried again. At 1.9 watts,
I would get good SWR for a second and then it indicated 8.9:1 SWR.

I went out and bypassed the ICE suppressor and that made no difference. The
only other radio I have that operates on 6M is my IC-706 - um, mobile. So I
jerked it out of the truck and rigged it up in the shack and ran an SWR
graph - less than 1.3:1 all the way. OK, so I hear FG5GP on 50.130 MHz and
give him a call with 100 watts - no problem. He was 57 on my meter and he
gave me a 57 report back.

OK, so now I know something's afoot inside my K3. What do I need to do ?
Someone mentioned clipping an offending component while waiting on a
replacement part. What part do I need to order ?

73 and thanks for all the help !

Normally I would tell you to connect your dummy load, enable the KAT3,
tune into the dummy load then disable the tuner and try the antenna.
However, I know there is an issue with the KAT3 finding the right match
on 6 meters.

Since you're seeing a high SWR after field day, inspect the KAT3
carefully to see if the 8 MHz trap has been damaged (extended TX into
a less than ideal load). Damage to that trap will be most evident on
six.

Ron, yes, you are quite correct about the ATU - it does work on 6M. :) I

 Jamie,

Did the antenna selection on the K3 get toggled to ANT 1 for
six meters? Remember the ATN1/ANT2 is stored on a per band
basis. If the rig was used in 6 with ANT 1 at field day, it's
likely that ANT 1 is still selected!

e-mail k3supp...@elecraft.com ... they can give you the information
to bypass the 8 MHz trap (unfortunately I failed to keep the info)
until you can order a replacement/exchange KAT3.

The trap is L10/C10 on the KAT3 board.

One other thing to try ... swap to ANT 2. It's possible that SA1 is
breaking down under power although I would expect that to be an issue
on all bands.

[Elecraft] K3/P3 combo during ARRL RTTY RU

2011-01-10 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello All:

I wanted to give - or chime in with - my impressions of my K3 performance
with my new P3 panadapter. I run an SO2R setup with the K3 (with rebuilt
TL-922A amp) as the #1 rig and my venerable FT-1000MP MkV (with 87A amp) as
my #2 rig. The K3 is the only rig with a panadapter.

This was my first contest after a station rebuild project which lasted over
a year and a half. It felt great to get back in the saddle again and I
really love RTTY as a contest mode. I use N1MM Logger as my contest
software.

I found the use of the panadapter was quite useful when I switched roles for
the rig and used it for SP. It was really neat to be able to spot RTTY
signals on a noisy 80M band and work them quickly. I have also found that in
a contest scenario, I have better luck turning off the dual peak filter and
just maintaining a narrow filter skirt around both mark and space. The
reason for this is that I can 'see the signal coming' when I tune for
stations much easier and can quickly 'lock on' and work them.

Now I wish I had a panadapter for the Mark V ! J

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500

2010-09-10 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello All:

I guess I'll throw my 2 cents worth in the pot. I have been waiting for a
QRO amplifier from Elecraft for some time now. I've truly enjoyed all my
Elecraft products which include four radios. The build of the K2/100 was the
richest experience and I learned a very great deal. The QRO amplifier was
talked about and a prototype was displayed many years ago now.

I finally decided to put to use my 20 year old Kenwood TL-922A amplifier.
The problem was that it required a buffer between the newer radios and this
amp, it was a noise maker with its heavy relay, and had problems with flash
over most likely due to VHF parasitics. There is a great deal of information
on upgrading this finely built amplifier on the internet and I finally took
the plunge to do the modifications. It took a couple months to gather up
items needed and do the mods but it now has an electronic cathode bias
circuit, full QSK using the little Gigavac GH1 vacuum relay, a step start
circuit using that big noisy relay (it only snaps shut once now!), no ALC
circuitry, modified VHF parasitic suppression, and I can drive it equally
well with my Drake T4XB or my K3. The project was fun, I learned a very
great deal, and the result was excellent. No more flash-overs and clean
output. And the old girls, the 3-500Z's, are still shining well.

The one thing that is missing is 6M amplification. This is where the new
Elecraft KPA-500 will do well. I believe the new 6M Alpha (RF Concepts) amp
will cost more than the KPA-500 but it will give you 1500 watts - easy. The
new solid state technology with light-weight power supplies is certainly the
way of the future and the small matching Elecraft footprint is a definite
plus especially for DXpeditions. Will I buy one ? It depends. It will be
very hard to part with my modified TL-922 since it is now 'personalized'.
And with the experience and knowledge gained from that process, I may decide
to build a 6M amplifier to round it all out. Now if Elecraft were to come
out with a KPA-500-6M 6M only amp . J

RE: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

2008-11-01 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Jim:

I'm wondering what external station controller you are using. I'm using a
NCS Multi-Switcher and I ran into very similar issues. I certainly felt (as
did Doug at NCS) that it was a ground loop problem. I used transformer
isolated mike cables and found that it was NOT a ground problem. I can give
you my long details, but the bottom line is that the mike gain in the
Multi-Switcher (internal) needed to be driven a bit higher than normal, and
the mike gain on the K3 need to be quite low (5 or 6) to avoid the 'growl'
effect. I'm forwarding this to Doug at NCS as he is quite interested in
what's going on that might be causing this.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback Problem

Gang,

I'm pulling my hair out over an RF feedback problem with my K3/100, and
wonder if anybody has any ideas? I use an external station controller that
switches key, microphone, CAT, line in/out, etc. between different rigs.
The microphone audio connects to the K3's rear panel microphone jack and
when the K3's power exceeds about 15W (in SSB), the audio becomes greatly
istorted. It does this when all the other cables to the K3 (except the
microphone and power cord) are unplugged. It also does it when the audio is
fed to the K3 via the rear Line In jack. Everything in my station is
well-grounded. Here are some things I've noticed:

1. The feedback still occurs when a military-type completely shielded 100W
dummy load is screwed directly to the K3's antenna port. This suggests the
RF from the K3 is getting into the audio line from some other source than
radiation from the coax cables in the station, most likely the 12V power
cord. To support this conjecture, I also notice that the feedback threshold
(15W) is not changed when the K3 drives a linear amplifier.

2. I normally use a 30A Kepco 12V power supply to run the K3 and my other
station accessories. The RF feedback problem is improved but not entirely
eliminated if I use a separate 12V supply for the K3. A common mode choke on
the 12V line doesn't appear to make any difference.

3. I can see some modulation-induced fluctuationss on the 12V line with an
oscilloscope that increase with the K3's power setting. I haven't looked at
these fluctuations closely enough yet to know whether it's RF noise or just
audio-frequency fluctuations caused by the K3's modulating current draw
from the power supply.

To summarize, my conclusions so far are that (1) the 12V power cord is a
source of RF leakage from the K3, even though the K3 has a filter at its
12V power connector to minimize this leakage; and (2) The audio/DSP
circuitry in the K3 is very sensitive to RF - much more so than other
transceivers in my station. (I've not had this problem with other rigs.)

Because of this RF sensitivity, one evidently has to be very careful when
hooking accessories to the K3. The front panel microphone jack is (to me)
wired in a curious way, with the Mic ground and PTT ground (shield)
connections floating above the K3's chassis with a 100uH rf choke.
Similarly, both the hot and shield side of the rear panel mic input jack
has series 100uH rf chokes, which isolate the input from chassis ground.

The problem with this arrangement is that most accessories that would
connect to the rear panel audio input jacks have single-ended outputs, with
a shielded cable that is directly tied to chassis ground at the accessory
end of the cable. Thus, unless one is very careful, it is easy to have a
situtation where the signal grounds in the audio circuitry of the K3 can
fluctuate with respect to the K3's chassis ground, and this may be the
source of the RF feedback sensitivity.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out the detailed mechanism for the feedback
closely enough to figure out a solution. Foir example, I don't know whether
it's better to leave the minus side of my 12V power supply floating, or to
tie it to the chassis gound.. And even if I left it floating, it would be
tied to the chassis anyway by the other accessories hooked to it, and this
might cause more problems than grounding it at the power supply terminal.
Somehow, it seems like a wiring change in the ground configuration of the
K3's audio circutis to improve RF isolation may be needed to lick the
problem completely.

73,

Jim Garland W8ZR

Congratulations on your new KX1 ! If you are talking about a 'random length'

Hi Jim:

Interfaces like the MK II (I have the MK) because of its construction
reverses the polarity of RTTY (FSK) signals. All radios with this and other

AFSK you might do to be inverted but that's why you have the check switch in

This is not correct. There is nothing wrong with connecting an

the balanced circuitry's ability to reject noise, but the input
will work fine. The correct wiring is simply hot to one side,
shield to the other side AND the chassis.

I do have a serious quarrel with the W2IHY equalizer though -- it
is FAR more complex and expensive than needed to get great audio
from a pro mic with a ham rig. All you really need for an
equalizer is a good quality capacitor of suitable value in series
between the mic and the mic input of the radio. The capacitor is
chosen to provide a low frequency rolloff fairly high in the
audio passband. See

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf

I have used a circuit like this with an EV RE16 and several rigs.
Total cost about $0.50. It would work equally well with any good
low-Z dynamic mic. I've also changed values in coupling
capacitors in the K2 to achieve the same result, and that works
quite well too. You don't need the capacitor with a K3, of course
-- the equalizer in DSP does the job.

Pro dynamic mics are easily connected to ham rigs -- since
they're balanced, one side of the balanced output goes to the mic
input, the other side goes to audio return, and the shield goes
to the chassis. I've done this quite successfully with an Omni V,
a TS850, and FT1000MP. By successfully, I mean that I get VERY
competitve, clean, contest-quality audio that cuts through QRM
and noise.

Good thought, Phil. Actually I have an external speaker plugged in, a NCS 8
ohm, and I did try unplugging the speaker to see what would happen. Same
story - no change in hash. The answer has got to be in the cable itself. If
it's verified with a solution, I can actually have another cable made.

[Elecraft] K3: 6M SSB audio hash

2008-06-06 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I've noticed some audio hash on my SSB signal on 6M only when the PA relay
kicks in at 13 watts. My long microphone cable goes to a Multi-Switcher -
W2IHY Noise Gate/Equalizer - Heil Goldline microphone. This completely
disappears when I use a Kenwood hand mike direct to the K3. Thinking that
this was a classic RF on the line problem, I clipped on multiple ferrite
chokes with many turns on the cable coming from the K3, the Goldline mike,
and in between the switcher on noise gate. This didn't even slow it down !
Hmmm. Interestingly when the PA relay is off at 8 watts, there is absolutely
no hash.

For now, I'll just use the hand mike on 6M (which requires a bit more mike
gain) to keep a clean signal. Has anyone else noticed this ? Got a solution
?

You found out that the hash is not coming from rf on the line. Try the
Goldline mic direct. Then add the switcher (or equalizer). Then add the
other one. See when the hash shows up. This may help you narrow the
problem down.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don’t have a ‘Kenwood’ cable for the
Goldline mike – that’s the beauty of the switcher. My primary rig is an
FT-1000MP MkV – thus the Yaesu cable. The switcher allows that cable/mic to
be used with multiple rigs, Yaesu or not.

RE: [Elecraft] K3: 6M SSB audio hash

2008-06-06 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Thanks Don:

I still suspect the 10' cable to the NCS Multi-Switcher is acting like an
antenna at that high a frequency - however, nothing changed with multiple
ferrite chokes along this line. Good idea to check the back mic connector,
although direct attachment of the hand mike and the headset to the front
connector did not cause the hash. The cable is a very well constructed cable
made by NCS for the K3 (Kenwood). I can certainly ask NCS (I forgot his
name, but he's very approachable) regarding the shielding characteristics. I
use the same cables for the other radios.

You asked if it gets worse with increase in power - yes, but not very much.
It's nearly an all or nothing deal.

When using my K2/100 with 6M transverter through the W2IHY unit, there is no
problem at all. The only difference is a longer cable to a different port on
the multi-switcher to reach the K3 - which is on the other side of my
monitor/desk.

Jamie,

The Heil headset will plug directly into the rear panel jacks - why not
give that a try as an added piece of evidence that it is not the microphone.

Most likely, something is being picked up on those long microphone
cables and is not a K3 problem at all. Are all the mic cables
shielded? Are all the cable shields connected to the plug/jack shell?
They should be.

I have not investigated the W2IHY equipment, but my understanding is
that it is setup primarily for pro mics which use balanced AF lines for
the mic audio. My suspicion is that there is something awry with the
balanced to unbalanced arrangement when used with unbalanced line
microphones such as you have there.

As far as why it shows up only when the PA turns on, I can only
speculate there too, but remember that there is more gain in the
transmit stages when the PA turns on, and that added gain may make any
small AF line pickup more pronounced in your transmit signal. If it
were from RF coupling into the audio, it would vary smoothly from low
power to high power and all RF levels in between - you indicated only
that it was there with the PA on, but did not say that it got worse as
power was increased.

Thanks so much for your information - I couldn't have done it without you.
Brian, your points are well taken of course. Rich, I have the much older

I DID get the little USBGear (now Serial Gear) 2-port adapter to work on

James:

Go to

www.keyspan.com/downloads/

Click on the model of the Keyspan adapter you have.

That should bring up a webpage of drivers for the various versions of
windows, including Vista.

My recently purchased Keyspan adapter had no Vista drivers - just a little
not directing me to the above. It included a utility to test the serial
port(s). It also allows you to configure the ports and to make the comport
number the correct number to work with your software. Also the Keyspan is
the only serial adapter I have found that installs properly (XP or Vista).
Others gave a warning that it was not compatible (the install instructions
said to ignore this message and click on the continue button) which caused
numerous other problems, such as stealing properly configured interrupts and
com port assignments.

Well it appears I discovered that not all serial cables are built the

I took the Keyspan adapter and my laptop to my trusty K2, and sure enough,
it polled just fine. That left me wondering 'what's the difference between
the K2 and the K3?' Except for anything internal which I felt highly
unlikely, the answer was the cable itself. I called myself substituting a
cable earlier but later discovered that this cable was formerly used to
relay status information from a UPS. They are not true serial cables
 apparently.

When I hooked up with what I KNEW to be a true serial cable to the K3, it
 worked perfectly !

As for Vista - who knows ?!! It looks like it will require a purchase of
 an
up-to-date device and drivers. Jeez, I wish ham radios had USB ports !

RE: [Elecraft] K3 interface with N3FJP FD software

2008-05-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Julius:

Well this is weird. I also use N1MM all the time and can do FSK with a
defined port with rig control. The USB adapter is a Keyspan USA 49WLC which
I have used for several years. It has 4 serial ports defined on my laptop as
com ports 4-7. I use com 4 for rig control and com 5 for CW. CW works FB,
but so far, the rig control doesn't. I'm going to try a different serial
cable on the off chance I grabbed a parallel cable instead of a serial cable
!! :) Hey, been known to happen !

Hi Jamie,

That sounds like a defined port address issue. Have
had a similar problem with N1MM when trying to use an
USB adapter. The logging software generally needs a
defined port (COM1, COM2, etc.) to poll. Some USB
adapters are able to do this and some are not.

FYI I've been running my K3 at 38400 baud with N1MM
without any issues thru a com port.

I found a newer HP/Compaq laptop that had a serial
port pretty cheap on ebay.

[Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation

2008-05-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

Well, after trying several permutations to try and figure why software was
unable to poll freq/mode, I have discovered that the K3 doesn't like my
usb-serial port adapters. I have two available - Keyspan 4-port and a
USBGear 2-port. Both have worked admirably with everything - until now. When
I re-hooked my K3 back to the shack computer with a true serial port, it
connected immediately - no sweat. CW keying was never a problem with the USB
adapters.

I need to find a USB-serial adapter that WILL work with the K3 in time for
FD. I hate this because these adapters worked so well with the K2.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation

2008-05-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Jack:

I noticed while hooking up my laptop running WinXP SP3 and utilizing the
Keyspan 4-port adapter, that running N3FJP's FD software, I could not get
the rig interface to take. I tried different baud, stop bits, everything. It
just would not work. CW keying was excellent. Well I tried other software on
the laptop such as MixW and it also would not work with its CAT.

Well I tried a different serial cable and then a USBGear USB adapter and
nothing worked for rig interface. I took it to straight serial connection
and it worked right away.

I've got a Vista laptop to try and I'm going to load those Keyspan drivers
and see what happens.

Disappointing.

That is surprising. The Keyspan adapters are among the best in the
industry. What are the symptoms, what were you trying to do, and what
happened?
And, of course, what OS and drivers do you have?

RE: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation

2008-05-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Jack:

Well the Vista driver was a bust. The 3.1c driver for the USA 49WLC just
gave a nice red X box and that was that. Nuts !

As for trying other devices on my WinXP SP3 laptop, yes, I just checked
email via Winlink with my KPC-3+ TNC connected via the Keyspan adapter. The
TNC initialized just fine and retrieved the email.

Still working on it...

OK, so you identified a couple of things to look for. Does the adapter
work with other rigs/devices under XP SP3?

There have been quite a few reports of problems with this update, I
hope you haven't run into one. The latest Keyspan drivers for XP are
dated July 4, 2007 - I presume you have those. By the way, the Keyspan
driver files are different for XP and Vista, so be sure you have the
right one for each OS.

I don't think I would give up quite yet on either device. There
appears to be some sort of configuration problem, work through it and
things _should_ work.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation

2008-05-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD

Hello:

Well it appears I discovered that not all serial cables are built the same.

It looks like it will require a purchase of an
up-to-date device and drivers. Jeez, I wish ham radios had USB ports !

[Elecraft] K3 interface with N3FJP FD software

2008-05-22 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I was setting up for using the K3 for FD this year and am having a problem
getting N3FJP FD software to do rig control. This may belong and likely will
go on their reflector as well, but I wanted to see if anyone else has
noticed any problems here. In the software, I choose Elecraft as rig type
and 4800 8-n-1 and the correct com port. Polling the rig fails. I'm just not
sure why. I'm using a Keyspan 4-port serial to USB adapter that we've used
successfully with the K2 for years. It will do CW keying just fine. Curious
.

Just throwing this out there while I start backtracking to figure it out.

I have installed the K160RX, KAT2, KBT2 and now the KSB2. Prior to install
I was able to hear activity on the bands. After install I could hear very
few stations. On the ones that I could hear, it was barely so even with
full AF gain and the SWR meter would barely deflect. This AM a friend tried
to TX on 40m at 5, 10 and 50 Watts. So it seems I have induced a deafness
problem. I have also installed the Elecraft mic with the Rbias resister and
jumpers. I was missing one jumper but used one from my computer junk box.
It was slightly different as it does not have a top like the ones Elecraft
provided. I include this on the off chance this might mean something to
those of you far more experienced and knowledgeable than I. I have
attempted to TX into a dummy load and I get dot deflections on the SWR
meter in the 5-7 range but a separate watt meter indicates well below the
set power.

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on tracking down this gremlin they are
certainly welcome.

[Elecraft] K3 RTTY Com port issue

2008-04-06 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello All:

I'm really enjoying my new K3 #616. I've been getting everything hooked up
and exploring all the possible solutions to typical problems. Here's one
that I haven't seen answered here -

To run RTTY with MMTTY requires use of the one Com port on the radio unless
you choose to use VOX control. This works quite well until something like an
APRS burst kicks in and sends the transceiver into transmit ! If you run a
logging program - mine is LoGic 8 - it uses the Com port to control the
radio or just put in the frequency information when you make a contact.
Running BOTH programs takes 2 com ports. Now, if I use a program like MixW,
this CAN use one Com port is you stay with AFSK. I have not yet run a cable
for FSK to a separate Com port.

Is there any slick way to avoid the Com port conflict ?

I DO plan on upgrading my interface situation with a microHAM device, so
this is probably an academic question. I would just like to hear what others
have figured out ! :)

Any particular pitfalls I need to watch for? (BTW, I do realize that

Are there other rig control programs that merit consideration?

Any recommendations on contest/logging programs?

Re: [Elecraft] Automatic 1:1/4:1 Balun switching under K3 control?

It could be that the relay could be switched by sending DC voltage up
the coax, particularly if the balun is a good distance from the radio -
much like turning on a pre-amp on the mast.

This is certainly one excellent use of the KAT3's LCSET mode, Leigh.

You've also given me an idea for a BL3: Same as the BL2 but with a
relay rather than a switch for selecting 1:1 vs. 4:1. We could then
use one of the K3's spare output lines (say DIGOUT1) to switch the
relay under firmware control, per-band. There would be one wire
running from the AUX I/O connector to the BL3, and you'd need to power
the relay from the K3's switched 12 VDC accessory output.

If this is of interest, I'll ask the BL2's designer to take a look at
it. I have the same problem myself, so I already want two :)

Subject: [Elecraft] The white box

I returned home from the Tuesday HRO lunch bunch assemblage. As I pulled
into my
driveway I noticed a large white box resting on the door step, carefully
placed to
avoid the puddle of water created by the mis-ajusted lawn sprinklers (I've
just
gotta take care of that one of these days). But what could be in the box?
Had my
wife ordered yet another something from welovetoshop.com?

I approached the box with caution as you just can't be too careful about
strange
packages these days, just think about what they do to unattended luggage at
the airport! As I gazed upon it I had this hazy recollection that I had
recently
seen a similar container, but where? Yes, it had been a picture of an
attractive
young lady holding it and yet another picture of a white bearded man holding
one of these boxes, flanked by the same lady! There must be a connection!
And then I recalled I had actually met this lady, but where?

As I drew closer, I could see what appeared to be a shipping label . Well,
that should answer the questions. Return address, Elecraft. Oh, that
little
purveyor of ham radios down the coast in the quaint little village of
Aptos.
I searched my memory as to what this could be. The last thing I had
ordered from them had been a shield upgrade kit for my K2/KPA100
so I could move the KPA100 back from its home in an EC2. And then
it hit me...many months ago at the DX convention in Visalia I stopped
by the Elecraft booth and saw a new product, the K3. Nice looking radio,
sorta like a K2 on steroids. Upon further investigation it was far more
than a K2, with features available only on $10k radios, and some available
nowhere else. As soon as I expressed interest in perhaps purchasing one,
one of Eric's goons wrestled me to the floor and Eric shoved an order form
into my hand, while extracting a credit card from my wallet. Just sign here
and by the end of July, you will have the best radio in the world!

July passed as did August, as well as September. By that time I had managed
to repress the memory of actually ordering the radio, firmly convinced that
Eric and Wayne had absconded with the down payments and moved to
Brazil, living the good life. Yet this must be it, the K3! Still skeptical,
I haulled
the box back to my allready cluttered work bench, whipped out my 60 year
old Boy Scout knife (yes, I have achieved Old Fartdom), cut through the
sealing tape...and there it was, lots of pieces of a K3,all packaged in ESD
proof plastic.

But now the search for the single most important component of an Elecraft
radio,
the serial number! Mine is smaller than yours! So far nothing obvious on top
so
need to dig deeper. Check the back panel and it has not been pre-serialed.
Damn, I'm down to the rf board and still nothing but lots of hardware. It
looks
like someone dumped the screw bins in a hardware store on the floor and
tossed the result into a single drawer. But I digress, only one more layer
to go,
and there it is! The Holy Grail! With trembling fingers I open the envelope
with
the S/N tag.it's, it's ...#23. Outstanding!

And now where DID I leave that screwdriver?...

Created under the influence of Pink Floyd.

Has any of the field testers taken the K3 on RTTY using a
soundcard and what-ver-software? How does it play on RTTY
and PSK31? I am not concerned about the internal feature,
but how it plays with soundcards and such

I have used the K3 extensively on FSK. In NAQP RTTY, I used a K3 and a
ProIII. The K3 was connected directly to the PC soundcard input whereas the
ProIII had an audio isolation transformer in line as well as a JPS NIR-12
audio DSP. The K3 performed at least as well, if not better than the
ProIII. Other field testers, e.g., N6XI, use AFSK and therefore are
connecting their K3 to the soundcard input and output will great results.

The K3 is designed for direct connection to soundcards with its LINE IN and
LINE OUT jacks on the back panel. Each is fed from an audio isolation
transformer inside the K3. The K3 is the best equipped radio for DATA modes
and direct connection to PC soundcards.

The following has been gleaned from several sources over the last few

The initial production run was upgraded from 200 to 220 and has been

delivery. The second run was also upgraded from 200 to 220 and has
been sold out with deliveries in August and September. I've not seen
third production run numbers but would expect them to equal or exceed
each of the earlier runs. Deliveries are said to be in September and
October. I've seen/heard information that indicates that run is going
fast. So an educated guess is they have sold well over 500 radios so
 far.

Looks like if you want a K3 for Christmas you should order soon.
Hopefully later production runs will be greater and Elecraft will
catch up by the years end. Due to long lead time on some custom parts
a quick ramp up of numbers may go slow.

These numbers may be way off. But, they are put togather from email

Hi all,
I'm been mulling this over (mostly while riding my bicycle).

It looks to me as if the IF freguency for the XV144 or the XV432 can
be changed pretty easily. If this is done, then full-duplex using the
K3 would become a bit easier.

If the firmware for the K3 would allow transverter operation on 28
through 32MHz and some other reasonable IF (22-24 MHz?(I have no idea
what would really be right)), then we could use the K3 for full-duplex
satellite operation.

And if a repackaging job could be done to combine these two units in a
single package, then a lot of external cabling might be disposed of,
and it might be made to match the K3.

What a great thread ! I have only experience with crimping BNC and SMA

Brian,

Then there must be a difference between original manufacture and repair
for those connections. The prior information I have from NASA and for
avionics applications is that crimping is the preferred method of
fastening. The only reason I can think of to vary from that in the
field is that the proper tools may not be universally available.

As has been pointed out, a proper crimped connection requires the proper
tool and connectors designed to be used with those tools. Vary either
piece of the equation and you end up with an unreliable connection. You
can take some shortcuts with soldering, but if you crimp, make certain
all the elements are correct.

For instance, I do not crimp my Anderson PowerPole connections - because
I do not have the correct tool - I have tried the low-priced model, and
I have experienced several connector failures and have gone back to
soldering them.

I would look for a ratcheting type tool, as crimping RG213/214 size

don't think even a ratcheting tool will work for larger cables, such as

I switched to crimp-type connectors quite a while ago and find them
superior to solder-type connectors. Some crimp connectors are
double-crimp, i.e., both the center pin and shield are crimped and
others have a solder-type center pin and crimp shield.

It's important that the crimp connector be the correct one for the
coax type and that you use the correct die size, of course. Some
crimp tools have interchangeable die sets and others are made with a
 non-removable die.

If you decide to buy a crimp tool, shop around, as there is at least
a 2:1 price variation from supplier-to-supplier for what seems to be
 the same tool.

:-) I figured 22 volts was about 20 watts and that worked great. All the
other parts of the alignment went fine except:

Part IX: Overload Protection test - I couldn't get this to work. Removing
the jumper JP8 removes power from the transverter. This can be turned on
manually with the power switch, but I left it off as the instructions said
nothing about it. Removing the serial control cable, disables the
transverter entirely - no power with or without the front switch on. Keying
the transmitter resulted in nothing except a higher SWR light on the KAT100.

LO Oscillator Frequency Calibration: Using my Mark V on 12M, I find I'm off
on 6M by about 700 Hz. But where the heck is Z6 trimmer capacitor. I suspect
it should be C64, since I haven't touched that one yet. :-)

[Elecraft] XV50 Transverter Help

2007-03-04 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hello:

I'm in the process of aligning my transverter and I'm stuck on the RF PA
quiescent current adjustment, where R39 is adjusted to 20 mV when keying the
transverter. Before keying, I get 7 mV; after keying, no matter what
position R39 is in, I get only 12 mV.

There is no troubleshooting section in the manual. Could someone point me in
the right direction ?

Thanks and 73,

Speaking of test equipment, I'd like to see Elecraft come out with a
real QRP watt meter at a decent price. Something small that can be
taken to the field and can read 1 mW up to 20W. The OHR QRP watt
meter is nice but too big for the trail and a bit on the expensive
side IMO. I think a watt meter of this type could probably be offered
in the $50 - $75 range, especially in kit form.

RE: [Elecraft] microKeyer with K2/100

2006-02-08 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Thanks Craig:

That answered several things. Yes, I have the K2 cable set. The audio 'J5'
from that set terminates in a 1/8 stereo plug. It would seem that I would
have to rig up something to parallel off of J5 and make a new1/8 connector
to have stereo output. I wonder why I couldn't just use the headphones
connector ? Did you make a new connector in this way ?

As far as the microphone, I probably would just connect direct to the rig; I
was just curious as to why it said only those listed microphones.

Did you get the K2 cable set with the microKEYER? That makes it a little
easier.

I hooked up the audio cable internal to the K2 as instructed and connected
it to the microKEYER connector labelled J5.

I'm using whatever the mic is that Elecraft sells so I can't comment on your
mic.

The Y serial cable goes to the KAT100, K2, and the computer end connects to
the microKEYER. The microKEYER has a separate USB cable that goes to the
computer. There was no gender-changer needed with the K2 cable set that came
with it.

I haven't figured out RTTY or PSK31. Just CW and phone. Those work great. I
like that I can plug a spare keyboard into the microKEYER directly and just
type CW if I need to. For contests my logging software drives everything
just fine but if I need to intercede I can either use the paddles or
keyboard without having to hit whatever combination of function keys lets me
type CW through my logging program.

Hello all:

I received a microKeyer for Christmas and am just now getting around to
working with it. I reviewed the questions that were submitted to this
reflector back in October, and I have a few questions.

The microKeyer instructions for the K2 cable set involves what appears to be
a cable to J5 to the rear panel for constant level stereo audio. Is this
really necessary ?

It states that only MH1, MD2, and Proset-K2 microphones will work with this
unit. I have the SSB mic settings set for the Kenwood microphones and have
used a Proset headset with the Kenwood adapter with the K2 without problems.
Why would this not work via the microKeyer ? Are there settings that would
make this more flexible ?

I have the K2/100 and the KAT100. The serial communications cable is a jump
cable from the K2 to the KAT to the computer. How can I maintain KAT
functionality and use the microKeyer ? A DB-9 Y-cable at the K2 ? A gender
changer at the computer end of the cable, then to the microKeyer ?
Obviously, the idea is to use only the USB interface of the microKeyer.

Thanks in advance.

If you use the headphone connector you disconnect the K2's speaker. You will
still get audio through your computer but then you'll have to turn the
computer on to use the radio at times when you're not using the microKEYER.
Also the audio you get out of the computer may suck. My little laptop
speaker sounds pretty horrible, though I can plug a headset into the laptop
and it's not bad.

I don't remember what the instructions for the microKEYER said, but that's
how I did it. I ran the wire out an unused hole in the case and it
terminates in a stereo plug. I don't remember if they included that
wire/plug with the K2 cable or if I just dug a connector out of the parts
drawer.

This solution has the potential problem that you may not have an unused hole
on the back of your K2. I used one of the XVTR holes, which I'll probably
never use. (Though I haven't ruled it out yet.)

RE: [Elecraft] Stupid, stupid, stupid - OT - NIR-12 troubleshooting

2006-01-03 Thread James C. Hall, MD

Well, I must humbly submit my most recent gaff. It's nothing like landing
long on a short runway (yikes!), but it relates to my inquiry on
troubleshooting my JPS NIR-12.

For several days now, Don W3FPR has been trying to help me figure out why
power was not being applied to this unit. It was thought to be a bad diode
running in series in the 12 volt line. Why was I getting 13 volts on the
anode and virtually no volts on the cathode side. It was as if there was no
ground on the cathode side of the circuit. I tried shorting the diode which
made an impressive smoke job of an electrolytic capacitor shunting to
ground.

Well then I retraced my steps. I discovered that when I pulled the unit out
of the shelf, the Radio Shack modular power plug (which goes to a 'wall
wart') came off the 2-prong saddle on the wire. I merely plugged it back in
the saddle. The AHAH moment came when I checked the polarity of the plug - I
had accidentally reversed the polarity of this plug (VERY easy to do with
these modular plugs). The diode was simply doing what it was designed to do
- protect the unit against dumb things like this.

In the immortal word of Homer Simpson - D'oh !!!

Don, thanks for being SOo patient with me !!!

RE: [Elecraft] OT - troubleshooting NIR-12

2005-12-31 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Don:

I was hoping you might lend a hand. :) OK, now this may show how much I've
forgotten but for the symbol of a diode, the 'arrow' side is cathode and
'plate' side is anode - right ? The schematic drawing of this unit
definitely shows the 'arrow' side towards the +12v source.

   -|-
Cathode - anodeRight ?

This would prevent reverse voltage but not forward voltage. So I should not
have seen a different voltage on the 'plate' side of the diode - if I
understand correctly.

Jamie,

If the diode is in series with the power line (as a reverse voltage
protection diode), and if the unit is being fed with a positive voltage, the
anode lead should be connected toward the +12 volt supply side. Since you
said there was voltage on the cathode but none on the anode, it would seem
to me that the diode may be installed backwards - and that would produce the
result you are observing.

Don W3FPR

 -Original Message-

I know this has nothing to do with Elecraft gear, but having built the 3
radios, I knew this is the place to come for experienced
 troubleshooters. I
have an old JPS NIR-12 DSP unit, that, after applying power, decided to
quit. The power lamp will not now light. This unit does not have
 a fuse. So
I decided to get out the DVM and attempt to see what's going on.

The DC power jack goes to a T-network consisting of two 0.1 uf caps with a
bead inductor before going to a DPDT switch. Beyond this is a 0.1
 uf cap in
parallel to ground and then a series 1N4004 rectifier diode to a 1000 uf
electrolytic capacitor in parallel to ground. From there it branches to a
couple of voltage regulators to get different voltages. When voltage is
applied, I get 13.7 volts on the cathode side of the diode, but
 zero on the
anode side (and beyond). I initially thought that this diode was at fault
and desoldered it and replaced it with another 1N4004. But, alas, this was
not the culprit. I desoldered the 1000uf electrolytic, but my capacitance
meter reads it correctly at 1000uf.

forgotten but for the symbol of a diode, the 'arrow' side is cathode and
'plate' side is anode - right ?

RE: [Elecraft] SKN rigs

2005-12-23 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Hi Eric:

Your web site is excellent. It brought a lot of memories. My first rig was
the Drake R4-B and the 2-NT. Later when I passed the General, I replaced the
2-NT with the T4X-B. I still have them all, but the 2-NT is in a box in my
storage room. I, too, never found a suitable VFO for it, but God if we only
new about VXO's in that day !! HI I was a high school sophomore in 1971 with
my Novice ticket - WN4YDL - living in Memphis. I now also have built the
Elecraft line - K2/100, K1, and KX1. I just may have to try this 'VFO' out !
I certainly need to get the Tarn-X out and start cleaning up these great old
rigs. I saw where an outfit called Misty Hollow is developing DDS gear for
the transceivers of the day, but I don't know if they have anything going
back to the separates.

73 and Merry Christmas,

Jamie WB4YDL

On STRAIGHT KEY Night, I'll be using the Drake 2-B, 2-C and 2-NT, not
surprisingly with a Speed-X STRAIGHT KEY.

The VFO for my 50 dollar Drake transmitter is an Elecraft K2 into a DL-1 for
about 2 vrms into the FT-243 crystal socket.
My apologies to boatanchor enthusiasts everywhere. I'm still looking for a
real VFO.

Included is a picture of a STRAIGHT KEY for those who seem confused about
the concept of STRAIGHT KEY Night.

I second that thought ! Think of a K2 with 2M and 440 tvtr's working split
on the birds . Neat !

Please consider coverage from 432 to 436 (or 438) so that the transverter
can be used with satellites.

We will be showing our new XV423 Transverter this weekend at Pacificon. It

will be in a four transverter stack with our XV50/144/222 XVs.

I ran into a brain-teaser once, that had me baffled for hours (I won't say
how many). Finally, I called my sister, the Rocket Scientist (actually,
we're not _Rocket_ scientists - That's a quote from her husband) and
asked
 her.

She and Paul spent a few minutes on the problem, figured it out, but it
was
such a trivial answer they threw it away. Since I'd spent so long on the
Question, I gave her about a week and then I called back. Luckily they'd
not
taken out the trash, so she easily found their notes and read them to me.

I won't spoil it for you 'crafters.

 Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456

Problem: An alley has a 20-foot ladder across it, in the left lower corner
and leaning on the right wall. There also is a 30-foot ladder, from the
right lower corner leaning on the left wall. The laders cross at 10 feet
 high.

 How wide is the alley?

Usual conventions: alley is all right angles, ladders have no thickness
nor
 bends, blah blah blah...

This should make some juices flow out there. Just simple geometry, or is
it?

PS: Iteration is cheating. Sorry Issac.

the responses would be far more interesting than merely looking up the
