[Elecraft] Holiday Wishes

2023-11-23 Thread Jim Sheldon

To All Elecrafters everywhere,
Since this is the beginning of the holiday season for those of many
different religious beliefs, I'd like to wish everyone, regardless of
their faith or religion, a very Happy Holiday Season from me and my

Subject T1 Antenna Tuner for sale

I have a T1 that's a couple years old. It got used only slightly and never out
portable with my KX2 after I built it from the kit. I added the internal tuner
to the KX2 to minimize things to carry when we went on vacation and the T1 was
shelved as a backup in case the KX2's tuner quit (it never did).

At 81, I'm not travelling much and just operating my K line home station so I
sold the KX2 a while back. I don't need the T1 and figure to offer it here as
it isn't currently available from Elecraft.

I'd like to get $150 for it - original manual is included, and I'll cover the
shipping - US stations only please as international postage, etc. has gotten
far too expensive for me.

Anyone interested please email me w...@cox.net and first email gets first
preference and we'll discuss payment details via email to keep clutter on the
reflector to a minimum.

It was a fairly normal dream. A CW rag chew with weak signals. Then N6KR came
back to me. After I gave him a 559 on the peaks, I asked him what was new with
him. I sat back and listened as he told me about the new Elecraft KX15. He
had been working on the nanobot installed user interface, so he described that
first. I lost some due to fading but here's the jist of it from my notes:

The KX15 user interface has a true head up display. A waterfall appears in
your visual cortex; the control panel is placed wherever you think it should
be. Audio is injected into your auditory cortex; extra processing is possible
through direct access to your cerebral cortex. He mentioned this was the
perfect interface for hearing or visually impaired operators. There is also an
optional haptic interface for inveterate knob twiddlers.

Ordering and setup is simple. Send Elecraft a sealed sample of your DNA.
They use it to program your personal set of nanobots. You receive a bag of raw
materials with the preprogrammed machines. Lie down with the raw materials
placed nearby. The nanobots induce sleep during the one hour build time. They
enhance pathways to the visual, auditory, and cerebral cortex areas of your
brain. When that part of the process is complete the nanobots awaken you for
your training session. They emplant the user interface controls as engrams by
sending messages to your visual cortex, as they store memories in your cerebral
cortex. (buy Elecraft) Once they are assured you understand the user interface
they lyse themselves and are excreted.

A small number of the nanobots are retained for future upgrades. The KX15 user
interface nanobots are keyed to your DNA to prevent them from roaming to other
humans. Since they have this DNA map they can compare each cell they
encounter for cancer screening. Any diploid cell which does not match your DNA
map can be lysed, pending approval of course. They will also filter your blood
for toxins. Or, sadly, they could be used to remove the KX15 thought
controlled interface.

The nanobots did more than enhance pathways in your brain and emplant engrams.
They also crafted interface antennas under your skin. Those appear as tattoos
which can be made transparent if desired. The antennas are gauged for: WiFi,
Blue Tooth, and the control/data link to the Tesla free space transducer. You
can change the antenna type if you wish by scanning the thought interface for
choices. Run multiple antennas to better link with your 'net environment.

Next Wayne mentioned the thought to CW modulation scheme. Plus other options,
like thought to: SSB, AM, and a list of digital modes. But he knew he had me
hooked with thought to CW  Whatever you think is transmitted in your chosen
mode. Whatever you think... Yes, the thought controlled interface does
require a few filters: the language limiter, band and power limits per class
and location, regulation encouragement, and (buy Elecraft) subliminal
advertising.

You can order the optional color packet for custom tattoos:
The animated Elecraft logo
Campaign ribbons for K1 through K16 and KX1 through KX15
   with serial number overlays
and decorations for multiple rigs in each category

Or install the active nanobot tattoo function where you can display:
A scrolling message
Real time raw contest score
The time piece of your choice
Active tattoo on either, or both arms
All tattoos can be made transparent via instant thought command

After I had taken notes on the interface I asked him about the rig itself. He
told me there is no radio, only a transducer which generates a carrier wave,
drawing power from free space. The transducer controls wavelength, modulation,
sampling, and the power level requested. He did complain about not being able
to lower the rig's power draw; 0.03 microamps is just too high. He really
wants to use nanobots to embed the transducer, eliminate the various
interconnects, and speed throughput. Then the thought controlled interface
would be able to drive the Tesla field transducer directly. I lost the next
sentence because I was thinking of a perfect antenna, oriented exactly, even as
I was hiking around sending CW with my thoughts. Woo Hoo!

Then I asked him about power levels. He said he had melted a receiver, but
quickly

[Elecraft] Got my repaired K3s back on the air

2022-03-20 Thread Jim Sheldon
Boy 20 meters is nicely open into Scandanavia this morning around 13:30
UTC. Just had a real nice 10 minute chat with Mika, OH6NVC on 20 CW.
Great to be back on the air and I can now get back to running my KX2 as
a portable rig instead of primary - LOL.

Also great to see more solar activity allowing better signals on the
higher bands again.

[Elecraft] HD8R

2021-11-07 Thread Jim Sheldon
My K3S died a couple of weeks ago and I haven't found the power supply
problem yet - difficult tracing as I don't have the board trace layout
so finding components off the schematic isn't easy, LOL.

On a lighter not, I replaced it as the shack rig with my KX2 and I've
been having a blast trying (and sometimes succeeding) to work the
Galapagos DXpedition HD8R.

With the ARRL Sweepstakes contest on this weekend, HD8R has been
concentrating on the WARC bands and so far I've worked them on 20, 15
and 12 meters (12 just a few minutes ago, using my Tri-Band Cushcraft
A3S beam as the antenna. Got 'em on the 2nd call much to my surprise.
The KX2's internal ATU had no problem matching the beam on 24.894
(1.0:1) and signals have been pretty decent on 12.

Ant loads on 17 meters too but signals are up and down on 18.074. Fun
to keep trying though and the KX2 is running great at 10 watts on a 5 AH
battery.

Mike,
I haven't seen anyone mention this before, so make sure you haven't hit
the "ANT" button and moved the selected antenna to the open PL-259.
Probaly should show ANT1 on the display. If it shows ANT2, hit the ANT
button on the front panel and re-select the right antenna.

[Elecraft] Microphone Jack Cover

2021-05-10 Thread Jim Sheldon

Just found a really nice looking SO-239 cover design for 3D printing on
Thingiverse.com. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4854560 It just so happens
to fit the threads on the 8 pin microphone jack used on the K3, and many other
radios.

For those like myself who operate 99 percent CW and don't even keep a
microphone connected to their K2, K3, K3S, K4, etc, this is a useful item to
protect both the outer threads of the jack and keep crud from entering the pin
area.

With the proliferation of 3D printers in many ham workshops these days, if you
don't have one, it should be relatively easy to find someone who has.

Re: [Elecraft] Sunspots and the K2, K1

2020-11-26 Thread Jim Sheldon
I had just gotten my K2 after having problems with a close neighbor ham
that ALWAYS ran his 2KW amp full bore, even for crosstown QSO's, had an
early Yaesu FT-1000 with super key clicks. He refused to do the key
click mod (so he could grab and hold a frequency in a contest without
people encroaching on it). He overloaded a Yaesu FT-897 which I
replaced with an ICOM 706 MKII and overloaded that too. I ordered &
built a K2 which took care of the overload, if not the key click
problem. I loved that K2 and had a lot of nice successes with it.

First off, I was working 160 meters one early morning, heard a Caribbean
station (will remain nameless to keep from shaming him) calling CQ (not
CQ JA or CQ DX) so I called him. He acknowledged but refused the
contact because he said he was only working JA stations. I continued to
listen to him call CQ for a while when a JA station answered him. After
he returned the JA's call, the JA station said "Sorry, I'm only working
USA stations this morning and then the JA called me! - Wow. I was only
running the K2 at 5 watts on 160 and that was totally unexpected. Had a
nice chat with the JA station (got the QSL card to prove it about a
month later).

Later, I inherited a tidy sum of money when my favorite Aunt passed away
and got a full K line. Final to the story, the FCC got on the local ham
with the key clicks so he had to fix them, I now had a KPA500/KAT500
behind the K3 and in a contest I could operate within a couple KHz of
this guy with the K3's attenuator on and not have a problem
copying/working weak signals. Back when he was overloading the Yaesu &
ICOM rigs I had, I asked him to turn the amp off in local QSO's but his
comment was "Get a real radio!". Well after I got the K line and ran
the amp in contests, he asked ME to turn MY amp off. My response to
that was -- "Like YOU said, get a real radio!". Shortly after that he
moved out to a farm he inherited about 35 miles from me and I haven't
heard him since - LOL.

Speaks extremely well for the Elecraft line's strong (even extreme)
signal handling capability. It was good, but not perfect with the K2
but even better with the K3 and now a K3S. At 78, I doubt I'll ever
have a K4, but I fully expect the K3S to just keep on truckin' as it has
for the last few years.

Thanks Elecraft for some of the best rigs of the age.

What, may I ask do these cigarette posts have to do with Elecraft radios? You
guys are WAY out of line.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] WWV Time Transmissions

2020-08-31 Thread Jim Sheldon
Propagation hasn't been the best on VLF either. I'm a lot closer to
WWVB than he is and my clocks sometimes lose sync for a day or two as
well, but right now they are ally locked on and showing the right time.
I also have a QRP Labs GPS clock running that is showing the same time
to the second as the WWVB disciplined clocks. I'd bet it's either RFI
from a noise source in the house or neighbor's house if close enough or
just poor summer propagation on VLF.

He may have just recently added a local RFI source to his home.
There are some noisy switching supplies out there on consumer devices.
One clock I have has an LED display and it shuts the LEDs off at 2am local
time for 10 minutes to allow syncing to WWV.

no longer syncing correctly. I think these are syncing to
signals at about 60KHz.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: [Elecraft] "On second thought, I'll take the stairs."

2020-07-12 Thread Jim Sheldon
Outstanding story Wayne! You're not the only one that has a ham friend
like that either. Sometimes I get a bit frustrated when people ask me
about the hobby and why I only operate CW and my explanation falls on
deaf ears. I think I will have to try your approach to the situation
and see if I can't get a few more interested.

The stairs are another thing though - LOL. I'm 78 now with a very bad
knee and don't walk or climb stairs very well any more (though I do
still try) and I'm afraid most of the new hams I know that fit this
category would leave me behind very quickly - hi hi.

I learned to copy CW as a "Morse Intercept Operator" in the US Army back
in 1961, later taught myself to send with both a keyer and bug (I still
prefer the mechanical bug), got my ham license in 1963 and have never
looked back. Still use CW 99.5 percent of the time and only use phone
when absolutely necessary (mostly on the VHF/UHF FM repeaters).

I have a friend about my age who got into amateur radio only a few years ago.
Like many of us, he was enthusiastic about the technology. Intrigued with DX.

I showed him my station; we talked endlessly about gear. Later, I helped him
put up a simple wire antenna.

Then, when his license arrived, he dove straight into FT8 and didn't look back.
Within days, he'd worked all states, then DXCC. He'd bag a few rare ones over a
light lunch, then pat his laptop on the back and congratulate his software app
for its near-mythical ability to extract weak signals out of noise.

Within weeks, he'd mastered everything there was to know about this glorious
new hobby.

Point. Click.

In this new world order, those of us who took the longer, slower path to
ionospheric enlightenment -- and who still occasionally enjoy making waves by
hand -- often fail to explain why.

I had failed to explain it to my friend. Even as hints of his boredom crept in,
creating an opening, the best argument I'd made for trying CW was that he could
do it without a computer. Coming in a weak second was the notion that CW was
the original digital mode. For obvious reasons, I didn't bother with the
classic argument about CW's signal-to-noise advantage over SSB.

I had all but given up.

Then, in a moment of delayed clarity, I decided on a different approach. I
invited him to a weekday brunch. A bit of an escape. He willingly took the bait.

On the appointed day, arriving at his workplace, I bypassed the lobby's
glistening elevators and climbed the four flights of stairs to his office. I
insisted we take the stairs down, too.

"Why?" he asked. "And how'd you get up here so fast?"

I pointed out that I always chose stairs, when possible. That's why I wasn't
out of breath. We hustled down, jockeying for position, and emerged on the
ground floor invigorated by the effort.

"So, where are we going?" he asked. We'd been to every overrated twenty-dollar
burger venue at least twice.

I replied that we'd be going someplace we'd never tried. My kitchen.

When we arrived, I put him to work chopping onions and broccoli and squeezing
oranges while I whipped eggs into a froth and grated Swiss cheese. We ate our
omelettes outside, in full sun and a cool breeze.

"What's for desert?" he asked. "Isn't there a frozen yogurt place a two-minute drive
from here?"

I had something else in mind. Back in the kitchen, I handed him a water bottle,
then strapped on a small pack I'd prepared earlier.

We walked a mile or so through my neighborhood, admiring the houses' varied
architecture, ending up (as planned) at a local park festooned with blackberry
bushes. The most accessible branches had been picked clean, but with teamwork
and persistence we were able to gather several large handfuls of fat, ripe
berries, which we devoured on the spot.

We'd been poked and scratched but didn't care.

"Doesn't brunch usually end with champagne?" he wondered aloud, admiring his
wounds.

Not this time. I pulled out two bottles of craft beer that I'd obtained from a
neighbor in trade for repairing his ancient home stereo. Carlos had spent years
crafting an American pilsner to die for, sweating every detail, including
iconic, hand-painted labels.

My friend accepted the bottle, then tried in vain to remove the cap. Not a
twist-off.

"Opener?" he said.

I handed him a small pocket knife, an antique without specialty blades. He soon
discovered it could not be used to remove the cap directly. He looked at me
with a bemused expression, no doubt wondering what I had up my sleeve this time.

I pointed out that we were surrounded by white oaks, a species known for its
hard wood. He got the message, smiled, and began hunting.

Something else that worked real well with my KX2 at a hotel in Branson, MO a
couple years ago (OzarkCon QRP convention) was the hotel’s rain gutter. I ran a
short wire out my ground floor room window to a screw holding a bottom section
on. KX2’s tuner clicked a couple times, 1:1 SWR and I was able to work all
over the US on 40 and 80 meters in the evenings. Beat having to try getting a
vertical up exposed in the parking lot and probably worked much better anyway.

Re: [Elecraft] I'm building a personal email list....

2020-06-20 Thread Jim Sheldon

Ken,
Exactly as Gwen Patton said, CONTACT list fine as my email address is
also on QRZ but if you are starting a reflector. Do NOT put my email
address in automatically. IF I don't have the prerogative to OPT-OUT, I
want no part of it.

Jim, W0EB

I'm confused. Do you mean a personal CONTACT list, or a mailing list like
the Elecraft reflector?

If it's the former, I don't mind if you associate my address with, say, my
call sign, so you can contact me if you need to. That's because you could
look me up on QRZ and find my email address. It's no big deal.

But if you mean a REFLECTOR, including me in mass mailings, then I'll have
to say no, thank you. If you want to have a reflector of your own, I
strongly suggest that you make it opt-in, not opt-OUT. I get hundreds
of emails a day, and need to choose the reflectors I subscribe to very
carefully.

So if you just mean your contact list in your email program, I don't see
any harm in it. But please don't jam-cram me into an email reflector. I
would prefer being told about what it might offer, and make the informed
choice to join it or not. I hope you will understand.

I’m considering using my AX1 with a few other small QRP rigs that do not have
internal tuners like my KX-3. Has anyone tried direct mounting an AX1 to a
T1, and using a stand to hold it all upright? I’m thinking simple and fast
picnic table portable ops for short lunchtimes...

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Not moving your wrist sending CW ?

2020-03-29 Thread Jim Sheldon
I learned CW back in 1961 as a "Morse Intercept Operator" in the Army
Security Agency. They didn't teach us to send, other than after we
passed 18 groups (yes, 5 leter/number groups, not English words) per
minute copying on a "Mill" they gave us a 4 hour class on sending with a
hand key. To pass that class we had to send a paragraph of text which
was recorded in the morning and then in the afternoon we had to copy
back the text we sent and get 75 percent perfect copy to pass. THAT is
extremely difficult when you learned to copy 5 letter/number groups and
then the sending test was a paragraph of English and your own sending to
boot!

I taught myself higher speed sending using a TO keyer and a Vibroplex
single lever paddle (Iambic keying hadn't been invented at that time).
I didn't get to where I could get my ham license until I got to Japan in
1963 and took the old "Conditional" test. Once I had my license I
bought a Vibroplex bug and again taught myself to use it. I do roll my
wrist slightly, and for me that is very comfortable. I also taught
myself (took a couple years to master) to switch back and forthe between
paddles and the bug, a skill I maintain to this day and I'm turning 78
in a few days. I can still copy 60 wpm or so in my head but with the
bug or paddles, my comfortable sending speed is between 25 and 30.

My pet peeve these days with the newer ops that actually can send CW is
they call CQ and then end the CQ sequence with "KN" and then wonder why
nobody answers them - LOL.

The only place I know that Morse was sent using "fingers only" was with
iambic/squeeze keying using an electronic keyer.

I learned on a straight key 50+ years ago where I was taught to use the
entire forearm. I moved to a bug where I was taught to roll the forearm
(confirmed after the fact by my wife's grandfather who was a long time
Western Electric landline operator/station manager) to a single paddle
TO keyer and eventually to a dual paddle keyer. I still roll my wrist

[Elecraft] OT: For Sale: Older iPAD (Still working OK)

2020-01-13 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have an older (I believe 4th generation - first one with the "Retina"
display) iPAD available if anyone is interested. (My wife bought me a
new Gen 7 version.) It has 16 gigs of memory which is a little small by
today's standards but it you don't put too many apps on it, it will work
just fine. It still holds a charge and will come with the charger and a
new, much longer, "Lightning" cord. The only problem with it is the
iPAD's "Lightning" cord input jack is a little worn and you sometimes
have to make sure that good contact is made when plugging it in to
recharge.

There are no cracks in the screen or case and it comes with a leather
protective cover that's still serviceable though it has seen better
days. I've wiped all personal and app data from it and it comes up
wanting a new owner to take it over.

Original cost, some 7 or 8 years ago was just over $500. I'd like to
get $90 out of it (via PayPal only, no checks or money orders) and that
will include shipping to anywhere in the US.

Please contact me off list if interested (w0eb at cox.net) to keep the
clutter down on the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] Carrier

2019-11-21 Thread Jim Sheldon
Either the person(s) causing it turned it off or propagation is gone
from it's origin to the Wichita, KS area as I just checked and it has
gone away. It had been on for at least several hours before I became
aware of it and as of 15:50Z it's not there anymore.

Jim, W0EB

We probably better end this thread now though before Eric shuts it down
due to too many posts.

[Elecraft] KPA 500 glitch

2019-10-30 Thread Jim Sheldon
Having a bit of trouble with the KPA500 following the bands out of the
K3S. For some reason, the other day I accidentally hit a button
combination on the K3S (not sure what I hit) and the KPA500 is now
thinking 7.0 MHz is 1.8 and some of the other bands aren't switching
correctly either. I can't find the command or whatever might cause this
in the documentation I have. It's been working properly since I got it
some years ago.

Anybody have any ideas before I call Elecraft and bother the busy
support staff?

Thanks,

Jim Sheldon, W0EB

[Elecraft] OT: For Sale SIGLENT SSA-3021X Spectrum Analyzer (Price Reduction)

2019-09-05 Thread Jim Sheldon

Price Reduction.

I find I don't use this any more as the project it was originally
purchased for has ended and I'd rather it go to someone that can use it.

SIGLENT SSA3021X Spectrum Analyzer, 9KHz - 2.1 GHz, and yes, it has the
tracking generator. Slightly less than 10 hours of use on it. Currently
sells for $1395 on Amazon. I'm asking $1000 plus shipping anywhere in
the Continental US (no export). Shipping & insurance will cost around
$25 (I'll cover any extra).

Please contact me off the reflector for further details or with an "I'll
take it". First "I'll take it" gets right of first refusal. Email
address is w0eb (at) cox dot net.

Hate to sell this, but at my age I'll probably not need it again. Oh
yes, I would prefer PayPal for the payment if you buy it.

Thanks,

Somehow I wound up with two of these and only need one on the workbench.
I'm trying to amass enough funds to buy a larger 3D printer than the
one my wife bought me for my recent birthday so am paring down a few
items I no longer need in the shack.

I believe these sold for around $105 new. The unit is in excellent
working condition with only minor cosmetic marks on the faceplate and
case. I'm asking $85 shipped anywhere in the US & posessions and a
printed version of the manual will be included.

PayPal preferred. Please contact me off the reflector to say you want

I rigged a camera mout arm to my recumbent trike. It folds in to the frame
while riding, then I fold it out for mounting the AX1 to it wih the TAX1 when
stopped. However, I noticed on the TATX1 that although it has a threaded hole
for attaching radial wire(s), there is no thumbscrew provided, nor is there any
mention in the instruction sheet as to what the thread size is. Attaching the
radial to my KX2 is a PITA as it is another wire to manage getting in and out
of the seat.
Has anyone figured this out? Is there an Elecraft thumbscrew that will fit?
Another source?
Aside from this it is a wicked cool setup if I do say so myself. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] FT8 + AX1 in the field?

2018-11-15 Thread Jim Sheldon
First real DX QSO with my KX2/AX1 was on the back porch running FT8.
Worked VP6D on 20 meter FT8 10/30/2018 @ 21:06 UTC -- about knocked me
off the chair when I got the "ack" and 73 from them. I was running 10
watts out and had two 16 foot counterpoise wires laid out across the
deck into the back yard. Both the KX2 and laptop were on internal
batteries. Almost makes me want to retire the KX2/AX1 as I doubt I'll
do much better than that at my age since I don't get out portable too
much. KX2/AX1 in the fabric carrying case along with a Bunnel 6B
miniature test set hand key and the KXPD2 paddles and a handful of
connectors/adapters plus the AX1 counterpoise and another 56 feet of the
same size wire for a wire antenna when I visit relatives in Louisiana
and Texas.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 + AX1?

2018-10-17 Thread Jim Sheldon
Hey,
I seem to recall something you said a few years ago about accidentally hitting
one of your T1 QRP autotuners with 100 watts for a short period and it
survived. That being said, not sure I'd want to be in the same county with an
AX1 connected to a KPA1500 putting out full power, LOL! The meltdown would be
horrendous though the amp would most likely survive.

They are still available under the Tweakers name and also I originally saw them
listed as "Chill Pill" speakers that appear to be identical. I have a set of

Mine last 7-8 hours on a charge and in their carrying pouch, they fit nicely in

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 thermal clicks

I've had my KPA500 for a few years now. I built it from a kit. The only time
I ever hear what you describe is when I've been long winded on RTTY.

I run it @ 450 Watts out no matter the mode and I never even get a fan speed
increase unless I'm in a RTTY rag chew and normally never hear any thermal
clicks.

I don't worry about it or let it bother me.

Actually, I was in the process of learning about JT65 by doing some
listening tests when FT8 was added to the suite. So I took it up
almost immediately after it was introduced. I think I was up to about
80 "contacts" when someone on the WSJT-X Yahoo group suggested that
JTAlert was a great thing to have. I wasn't quite sure why, but I
installed anyway.

The setup in my shack has a laptop on a shelf above a larger monitor on
the operating desk. Normally, the log is on the laptop and everything
else is below using Windows split screen. I was trying to work a west
African station and we were part way through the QSO when it became
clear I was getting QRMed each time I (my computer) sent a report.
After several sequences I saw a brief flash of a window popping up but
straddling both screens so I didn't quite understand what it was. A
few seconds later it happened again but this time I got the gist of
what it was. JTAlert was informing me that my QSO partner was/had been
sending me a text message informing me that he had my report and I
should be sending RRR. At that point I stopped transmitting and
unloaded the software. Nuff said.

Re: [Elecraft] FT8 using internal USB sound on the K3S

2018-06-25 Thread Jim Sheldon
Thanks to Rich, VE3KI, I got the Windows 10 privacy settings fixed to
where WSJT-X and MMTTY can now access the K3S internal sound card.
Turns out Microsoft forced a huge upgrade on all their users but never
adequately explained that they shut off access to some things for
"privacy" reasons.

Sure caused me a lot of grief anyway - LOL.

Had all the K3S settings correct in the first place, just Microsoft
locking things out. Anyone else having such problems needs to first
check the Privacy setting in Windows just in case the same thing
happened to them.

Thanks again to all who tried to help.

Jim Sheldon - W0EB

PS had a quick FT-8 QSO with DG1ABE right after I got it working.

BINGO! Thank you very much Rich I knew it had worked before

All works well now

You mean that in WSJT-X's Settings window under the Audio tab, it won't
let you select the K3S's USB Audio Codec for input or output? That's
not how I read your message, but if that is the case, then you may have
fallen victim to a recent Windows 10 "improvement".

In the Windows 10 Settings window, choose Privacy. Then on the left
side, choose Microphone. A setting called "Let apps use my microphone"
should appear. Turn this to On. If this is the problem, turning this
option to On should permit WSJT-X to get access to the sound card
again.

It sounds as though you are putting the rig into USB mode. I believe
you
would be better off putting the rig into DATA A. Set the rig's mode
to DATA
and the data submode to DATA A. With the rig in DATA A, adjust the
K3's
filter controls to put the Lo-Cut at around 0.20 and the Hi-Cut
around 2.8.
With the rig in DATA A mode, set MIC SEL to LIN (this will not affect
your
microphone setting for voice modes). MIC+LIN will be N/A. Adjust the
MIC

gain control to somewhere above zero, e.g. LIN 5 or so.

In the WSJT-X Settings window under the Radio tab, if you are not
using
some other radio control software such as the DXLab Suite Commander,
then
set the CAT control port to the COM port number that Windows has
assigned
to the K3S's USB serial port. Set the Mode in WSJT-X to either None
or
Data/Pkt - not to USB. For PTT, I prefer to set WSJT-X's PTT method
to VOX

and turn VOX on in the K3, or you can use PTT via CAT. Under Split
Operation, choose either Split or Fake It.

In the WSJT-X Settings window under the Sound tab, select the K3S's
USB

Audio Codec as the soundcard device for both input and output.

Right-click on the Windows speaker icon in the Windows system tray
and
select Playback devices, then select the USB Audio Codec (in the K3S)
and
click on the Properties button. Select the Level tab and adjust the
level

slider so it is in the middle of the range.

While receiving in WSJT-X with WSJT-X's Monitor function on, adjust
the
K3S's LIN OUT level so that band noise alone is enough to bring the
level
indicator on the left side of the WSJT-X window to about 30 dB or so.
When
receiving actual signals, the level thermometer should not turn red;
if it
does, reduce the K3S's LIN OUT level. In the Wide Graph window, you
may
need to adjust the waterfall and spectrum gain and zero controls to
get a
good looking spectrum and waterfall. I don't check Flatten - if you
do,

make sure that the Wide Graph window does not display any frequencies
outside the K3S's filter bandpass.

Now transmitting into a dummy load or a dead band at low power or in
TX
Test mode, put WSJT-X into transmit and adjust the Windows level
slider
and/or the K3's MIC gain control to get 4-5 bars on the K3's ALC
meter.
Once this is adjusted correctly, you should no longer need to adjust
either
of these controls. Use the K3's PWR control to adjust the output
power. Do
not try to control the output power by changing the audio level.
Leave the
Pwr slider on the right side of the WSJT-X window at the top of its
range

and don't change it.

Hi Don,
the answers to your questions were already answered but Yes, the CODEC
is configured for both input and output, nothing is plugged into the
back of the K3s and mic is set to LINE

I stated that in my previous posts.

I have tested the transmit audio with the K3S in TEST mode and I'm
getting TX audio from WSJT-X just fine -- it's the input from the K3S to
the computer that appears to be broken and I don't know how to check to
see if it's in the KIO3B or the computer.

Jim,

Do you have WSJT-X configured to use the USB CODEC for both input and
output?
Do you have anything plugged into the LINE IN jack on the back of the
K3S? Anything plugged in there will take priority over the internal
soundcard.

Is the MIC SEL menu set to LINE?

[Elecraft] OT: FS LNR Precision MTR5B Mountaintopper

2018-06-23 Thread Jim Sheldon
At age 76, I don't get out to portable locations any more and this is
totally surplus to my needs. I bought this MTR5B "MountainTopper" new
from LNR Precision ($400) a couple years ago. Used it when I went to
visit my sisters & neices in Florida and Louisiana with excellent
results.

I did add the optional tuning encoder (I grew up turning knobs for
tuning rather than Up/Down button pushing). Also included in the package
will be an MFJ 9201 "QRPocket Tuner" which will actually handle 100
watts when tuned at lower power. Original power cable with added "Deans
Connector" + matching Deans female as well as a package of spare power
connectors to fit the MTR5B.

Main power cable has 2 series Schottky diodes in series with the + side
to drop a 13.8V power supply to just under 12 V which is the stated max
input voltage for the MTR5B.

Rig puts out just under 5 watts on 11.9 volts and cosmetically it's a 9
out of 10. It has some scratches around one sides mounting screw hole
that happened when I drilled the hole for the encoder. The good news
is, Ihave a brand new case for it, still in the box which will be
included.

The manual is downloadable from LNR Precision's website but I have the
original one which has the schematic in it. The one on LNR's website is
very abbreviated. A printed copy of the original will be included.

Asking $325 Shipped in the US for everything.

Anyone interested please contact me off list, (w...@cox.net) for
pictures, to say "I'll Take It" or for further information. Payment by
USPS Money Order or Pay Pal would be preferred.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2017-12-01 Thread Jim Sheldon
I was introduced to the SARK-110 several years ago and besides being an
excellent antenna analyzer, it had one feature that nobody else had
(when I bought the SARK) and that is called a "Time Domain
Reflectometer". This allows you to find breaks, impedance bumps and
other anomalies in cable runs.

During my 20 years in the Army, I was introduced to a hugely expensive
HP-140A oscilloscope with a TDR plug in. We used it to find cuts in our
buried coax where the local people were digging it up for the copper
(back in 1967). From that point on, I always wanted a TDR but they were
way too expensive (even used) for a poor ham to even consider until I
was introduced to the SARK by a good friend at the "OzarkCon" QRP
convention. It paid for itself quickly by finding where a gopher (or
mole) had chewed mostly through some buried coax I had going to a
vertical in the back yard. The SARK's TDR pinpointed the break within a
foot and it was probably more accurate than that as my measurements when
following the cable were somewhat sloppy.

It also makes a pretty decent signal generator as well, can be
calibrated against WWV with not too much effort, but the minimum signal
you can output is 50 microvolts (S9) so a good external step attenuator
is needed along with double shielded cables to minimize feedthrough of
the SARK's output signal. Oh yes, I did mention, it's an excellent
antanna analyzer as well and it will do Smith Chart plots and other
stuff too. You can control it with a computer via USB too.

No financial interest in the company, just a very happy user.

Re: [Elecraft] CW Contest and Elecraft K3s decoder

2017-11-27 Thread Jim Sheldon
In order to keep the robots from getting perfect copy on me either rag chewing
or the very few contests I enter, I've stopped using a keyer and have reverted
to sending with a bug. Not very many robots can copy even a good bug fist.

I'm of the opinion that robot copying and power over 500 watts output should be
outlawed in contests. That would help level the playing field immensely.

[Elecraft] OT: Still making Dot Stabilizers for Bugs

2017-10-20 Thread Jim Sheldon
CW operators and bug key users, I haven't posted this blurb on the "Dot
Stabilizer" I make for about a year so I decided to make a Christmas
price reduction effective immediately and it will continue until
December 31, 2017. Please send any inquiries direct to me rather than
post them to the reflector to keep Eric happy and clutter to a minimum -
LOL.

Jim Sheldon - W0EB

Semi-automatic "BUG" key Dot Stabilizer Information:

Back in the late 1920's early 1930's, T.R. "Ted" McElroy (Morse copying
World Champion) who also manufactured telegraph keys, came up with a
nice innovation he called his "Dot Stabilizer" which pre-loaded the
vibrating dot contact spring by a very small amount, effectively
ensuring better dot weighting and came very close to completely
eliminating the contact bounce which creates what many call "scratchy
dot syndrome". This device required replacing the existing dot contact
assembly with his stabilizer and fit only the McElroy manufactured keys.
For some unknown reason, most information on this device was either lost
or ignored during the WW2 years and after.

After accidentally rediscovering it a couple of years ago, I undertook a
slight redesign of McElroy's original device to eliminate the necessity
for replacing the vibrating dot contact assembly. This makes the device
easily installed and removed at any time with simple tools. I also came
up with a further variation on McElroy's design that can be used on even
the "Flat Pendulum" bugs such as the Vibroplex Lightning Bug, Military
J-36 and Champion models as well as various copies of them and even the
Japanese Hi Mound "Coffin" bug.

I currently make "Dot Stabilizers" for the Vibroplex, Speed-X and
McElroy keys having the round pendulum and bugs with the flat pendulum,
such as the Vibroplex Lightning Bug, Champion and WW2 military J-36 bugs
(including the Lionel models) which are based on the Lightning Bug
design. I can also manufacture them for other bugs such as the Japanese
Hi Mound ("Coffin") bug, European made (metric sizes) bugs, etc. as long
as you can supply me with the diameter (round) or thickness (flat) of
the pendulum and a sharply focused digital photo of the actual bug you
want it for. (I only need photos and pendulum dimensions for bugs other
than the McElroy and Vibroplex models.)

They can be made out of either aluminum or brass though aluminum is the
preferred material as it is far less expensive. They mount to the arm
with a socket head set screw and the proper Allen wrench is included
along with a printed set of instructions explaining installation and
proper adjustment. Also, they are made entirely by hand so there may be
slight differences between each one (won't affect the operation at all).

The prices are normally $28.50 post paid for the aluminum and $38.50 for
the brass ones to domestic USA customers. I'm offering a Christmas
special price reduction from now until the end of the year. Due to
large postage increases and the extra, complicated Customs forms I need
to fill out for export, this Christmas offer is just for USA domestic
customers.

I'm offering my standard Dot Stabilizers in Aluminum for $22.50 each
which includes postage and 32.50 each for the brass variety, also
postage included.

If you decide to order one or more, I will need the make/model of the
bug(s) you want stabilizers for, whether they are "left" or "right"
handed (the bug, not you) and be sure to include your mailing address as
well.

I take personal checks, USPS money orders (made out to Aubrey J.
Sheldon) sent to my QRZ listed address (2029 East Evanston Dr., Park
City, KS 67219-1618) or PayPal to w...@cox.net

I'll be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Please email inquiries direct to w...@cox.net not to the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] Specs KIO3-B internal sound card

2017-09-20 Thread Jim Sheldon

Udo,
I've been using my K3S on FT-8 with great success via the K3S' internal
soundcard. I use it with MMTTY all the time as well and it decodes
better than a HAL ST-8000 I used to own. Listen to what K9YC says, he
knows what he's talking about.

demanding application. WSJT-X operates at 48 kHz 16-bit,

[Elecraft] OT: PC Board Software request

2017-09-01 Thread Jim Sheldon
Anyone out there have an old copy of the "Copper Connection" PCB
software that no longer use and are willling to part with? Since
Express PCB bought them out I can't find the software anymore. I need
something that will produce the "Gerber" files that pretty much all the
PCB manufacturers need to do production PCB's even in limited
quantities.

Please reply off list to keep the clutter (and Eric's wrath) to a

Re: [Elecraft] KX2, spy radio

2017-09-01 Thread Jim Sheldon
Naw, he just figured out a practical way to use it in smaller radios by
the invention of the narrow bandwidth, very steep skirted "mechanical"
filter to lop off the unwanted sideband (if you consider the radios of
that day smaller - LOL). The real use of SSB came when General LeMay of
SAC adopted it for their world wide HF communications network and
propagation conditions during that time were so good that it was almost
impossible NOT to communicate anywhere you wanted to with SSB.

Not even remotely so...SSB technology goes back decades before WWII.

Re: [Elecraft] Questions about the sensitivity of the KX2

2017-03-06 Thread Jim Sheldon
I just shut things down for the night. I could absolutely no signals on any
band 160 through 10. 80 and 40 were even completely devoid of signals and they
usually have activity well into the night. You just picked a poor time to try
that whip Tom. Morning should hopefully be better.

[Elecraft] OT: FS: SDRPLAY RSP1 with extras

2017-02-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
I'd like to sell my SDR Play RSP1 SDR monitor receiver. It's barely
used. Originally sold for $149.95 and currently selling on Ham Radio
Outlet for $129.95. It normally does not come with the USB A-B cable,
has an SMA antenna connector and there are a number of different, free,
downloadable software packages that will run it. The most popular (and
now being included with it) is SDR Uno. The RSP1 covers 10KHz to 2GHz.
It's a great monitoring package and with a laptop is also very portable.
It's powered via the USB cable.

I'll sell this one for $110 shipped anywhere in the US and will include
a USB A-B cable, an SMA to BNC female antenna adapter and a CD I burned
containing SDR UNO and the operating manual for it.

Prefer PayPal.

If interested, please reply direct to w...@cox.net not via the
reflector. First "I'll take it" (by date/time of incoming email) will
get the right to buy it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Chirp?

2016-12-29 Thread Jim Sheldon
I've actually heard a K3 (not a K3S) with a very slight chirp when using an
Ameritron AL-811 amp and even a little more chirp when using an Alpha (not sure
the model) caused by RF feedback somewhere in the system. Before he got rid of
his KPA500 this never happened. Funny, but he's only running around 500 watts
out with the Ameritron. I suspect it is caused by an almost resonant piece of
coax between the K3 and the amp as it only seems to happen on 40 meters.

[Elecraft] OT: FS: YouKits DP-1 QRP Power & SWR meter

2016-11-21 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have an older YouKits DP-1 QRP Power & SWR meter - reads from
5milliwatts to 25 watts in 2 ranges. Frequency range is 1-60 MHz with a
specified accuracy of 5 percent. Their exclusive US distributor,
Vibroplex, is selling these for $149 plus shipping. The new ones have an
internal Lithium Ion rechargable battery. This one came without the
battery/charger and Vibroplex will not sell just the battery/charger
separately (at least as of my last call to them) and you cannot get it
from YouKits directly. It can be powered through the coaxial power jack
by any 8-15 volt source (center pin is positive) and most 9-12 volt wall
warts power it just fine. I'm including a 9 volt 300 ma wall ward with
the unit. The operating instructions can be downloaded from the
www.vibroplex.com website but a printed copy will be included.

I'm asking $85 shipped anywhere in the US for this one. (I can't ship it
internationally as it would be cost prohibitive.) Cosmetically it's a 9
out of 10 (they misspelled the word CHARGE when they silk screened the
lettering on the front panel - spelled it CHAGE).

Pictures of it available by email on request.

PayPal (preferred) or USPS Money Order.

Anybody with a heavy fist like mine and need something that is hard to
move around on your operating desk when you send CW? I have for sale an
excellent condition Vibroplex VibroCube set of paddles. This is actually
the Standard, Upgraded model with the jeweled pivot bearings and the
black crinkle powder coat finish. It's around 2 years old and I don't
use it anymore as I was digging through some old stored boxes from my
military career and I found the old Vibroplex "Vibro Keyer" paddles I
originally learned to send CW on, way back in 1962 so they are now
clamped to my desk.

This VibroCube, serial number 404755, is current manufacture and the
Standard upgraded model sells for $229.95 plus shipping from Vibroplex
(www.vibroplex.com). That's what I paid for it when I bought it around 2
years ago. I'll let this one go for $160 and you pay the USPS (Medium
flat rate box) shipping. I'd prefer to sell this in the U.S. as
international shipping has gotten almost impossibly high priced. I'd
prefer PayPal, but will take USPS money orders.

and the black crinkle powder coat finish. It's around 2 years old and I
don't use it anymore as I was digging through some old stored boxes from
my military career and I found the old Vibroplex "Vibro Keyer" paddles I
originally learned to send CW on, way back in 1962 so they are now
clamped to my desk.

This VibroCube, serial number 404755, is current manufacture and the
Standard upgraded model sells for $229.95 plus shipping from Vibroplex
(www.vibroplex.com). That's what I paid for it when I bought it around
2 years ago. I'll let this one go for $160 and you pay the USPS (Medium
flat rate box) shipping. I'd prefer to sell this in the U.S. as
international shipping has gotten almost impossibly high priced. I'd
prefer PayPal, but will take USPS money orders.

Please keep any replies off the reflector - email address is

[Elecraft] OT: CW Operators - Semi-Automatic Bug Dot Stabilizers available again

2016-06-26 Thread Jim Sheldon
Quick follow-up. Shortly after my original post announcing the
availability of my dot stabilizers again, my ISP started having serious
problems handling all matters internet including my email. I was able
to receive a few inquiries and orders during their sporadic up time over
the last couple of weeks, and those have all been answered and paid
orders filled. The orders have all been delivered according to the US
Post Office's tracking site.

My concern is there were a number of emails that got lost somewhere in
the system during that time so if you made an inquiry or attempted to
order during the last several weeks, please re-submit. I want to make
sure everyone got any questions answered.

2016-06-19 Thread Jim Sheldon
If there way, I never saw it -- but I just tested it. Left the KAT500
off, powered up the K3S and no errors. Then powered on the KAT500 and
it all worked just fine. Guess I'll have to look back through the
"release notes" on the KAT500 firmware releases to see which one fixed
it.

[Elecraft] OT: CW Operators - Semi-Automatic Bug Dot Stabilizers available again

2016-06-15 Thread Jim Sheldon

For some unknown reason, most information on this device was either
lost or ignored during the WW2 years and after.

The prices are $25 post paid for the aluminum and $35 for the brass ones
to domestic USA customers. Due to large postage increases, International
prices are $45 for the aluminum ones and $55 for the brass ones. This
does include international First Class shipping.

City, KS 67219-1618) or PayPal to w...@cox.net . International
customers MUST, repeat MUST use PayPal as it is the only form of payment
I can accept from customers in countries outside of the United States.

I'll be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Please email inquiries direct to w...@cox.net rather than through the
reflector to keep the list clutter down.

Re: [Elecraft] This will effect pilots and Hams throughout the Western US

2016-06-10 Thread Jim Sheldon
That's going to be difficult to answer without knowing just what effect these
"events" will have on the signals received by the GPSDO's control receiver. If
the GPS signals are "spoofed" the GPSDO could very well be driven off
frequency, causing the K3EXREF to cause the radio's frequency to be off by
quite a bit, actual amount and direction unknown. If the signal simply is
blocked, the effect will probably be very minimal and will vary by the
frequency and stability of the GPSDO's unlocked crystal oscillator.

Without knowing exactly what they are doing, and exactly how that will affect
the actual reception of the GPS (or GLONASS) signals, it will be impossible to
predict exactly what will happen and that's why it should be of concern.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggested KX3 "upgrade"

2016-05-31 Thread Jim Sheldon
Any button will definitely stop it, but (and this includes the K3, K3S,
KX3 and possibly the KX2 as well) oft times you will get a partial (dot
or dash) sent even when pressing a button. Even when calling CQ looking
for a general QSO this can be annoying and confusing to both the sending
station and any station listening/planning on answering the CQ. It
definitely is not exclusive to "running" in a contest. It bugs me as
well and I am not a contester.

The original poster's request is certainly reasonable and I suspect this
has bugged a lot of people (myself included) for a long time but most of
us didn't want to endure the "use N1MM" and other similar replies having
no real bearing on the original request.

[Elecraft] Bug in FW 5.46

2016-05-25 Thread Jim Sheldon
Further checks on this - I reloaded the old FW back to Beta 5.35 and the
problem existed in that one so I loaded the current production version
5.38 and it occurs there as well so I went back to the test version I've
been using. Once programmed, the memories work as they should, they
just hang to a solid tone when the IM character is sent during
programming and it appears to be a problem with the K3S only.

[Elecraft] K3S bug in FW Beta 5.46 Keyer Memories

2016-05-25 Thread Jim Sheldon
Just found a bug in the keyer memories when programming for PSK/RTTY.
The memory loads fine until you send the ..__ (IM) character to
terminate transmission and then it locks up as if you had a constant
"key down" with a hand key. I was programming memory 4 to call CQ on
RTTY when I discovered this. I tried the other memories and got the
same results. It never did this on the K3 I used to have so I don't
know if it's unique to the K3S or whether it does this on the K3 as
well.

Whoever is handling the FW for the K3/K3S might want to take a look at
this as it could get annoying. The anomaly only shows up when
programming the memories, not when sending direct with the paddles and
the IM character does terminate transmission as it should. It just
causes the keyer to hang when the IM character is sent during memory
programming.

Anyone Else notice this? (Can't be RFI as there is no RF output during
CW memory programming). Can't call Support as they don't give any help
on Beta FW.

It may be something unique to the K3S. My older K3 didn't do it, but
the new K3S (#10641) always reverts to PTT KEY OFF-OFF on a power cycle.

Same thing happens here with K3S SN 10057. I have no digital SW running
or rig control at the time of power down. If I set PTT to DTR and power
down for some period of time, PTT defaults back to OFF when power up.
Always done that since day one. I thought there was some update done in
latest firmware to PTT-KEY line to default those to OFF so when PC was
restarted K3S would not go into TX?

I notice the PTT KEY selection under CONFIG doesn't appear to be
non-volatile as when the radio is power cycled, it always reverts
to

OFF - OFF. I'd like it to stay set to DTR -- RTS but it doesn't

Even if I leave 13.8 to the radio, turning it OFF and back ON and
 that setting reverts.

[Elecraft] OT: Searching for Panel Meter for R390A/URR

2016-05-14 Thread Jim Sheldon
I realize this is a really long shot asking on the Elecraft reflector,
but I'm posting to a few others as well.

During my 20 year Army career, I repaired the R390 and R390A receivers
plus taught others to repair them as well. This morning at a local
tailgate swapfest I was actually given an R390A in working condition,
but it's missing it's Carrier Level and Line Level meters. I'd like to
restore it to look like it did when it was in Military service.

If anyone out there has either the Carrier Level meter or Line Level
meter for an R390 or R390A that they're willing to part with, please
contact me off list with your asking price.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI resistant Monitor

2016-04-11 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have 3 Acer monitors (one 19" square and two 23" wider screen). The
19" runs directly on 120VAC and the twp 23" ones have small switching
mode power supplies that look like laptop supplies and put out 13.8/14
volts. The switcher supplies for these 2 monitors appear to be
virtually noise free. At least I have not had any noise problems that I
can attribute to them and they have been on the desk for several years
now.

My major noise source has always been the 7500 volt power lines that run
across the South and West sides of my small city lot. Fortunately the
utility company ran afoul of the FCC several years ago and they are very
responsive to noise/interference calls.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 UOS?

2016-04-07 Thread Jim Sheldon
RTTY acronym, "unshift on space". Machines had to be shifted into figures and
stayed there until shifted back to letters. Unshift on space was devised to
bring the receiving machine back to letters when a spacebar character was
received to keep from printing gibberish if the shift to letters character was
garbled or (heaven forbid) forgotten.

[Elecraft] K3S USB and MMTTY running SPLIT

2016-04-04 Thread Jim Sheldon

Hey,
Thanks Mike, Joe and several others that replied suggesting going to the
control panel's Sound app and the Advanced Recording tabs. This didn't
work either, but it did put me on the right path. A close friend, who's
also an MCSE just happened to come over this morning and when I told him
what was happening, we took another look at the sound set up.

Couldn't find any of the suggested things, so he suggested there might
be a problem in my version of Win 7 Pro from the original 64 bit install
when I converted it over from the 32 bit version that had been installed
on the computer when I got it.

Wound up running the 64 bit install again using the "Repair System"
item. Bingo, that cured it and now I have the ability to select which
channel I want for the MMTTY programs.

I set them up with MMTTY LEFT and MMTTY RIGHT icons on the desktop so
it's easy to figure which one is which. Works like a champ.

To those I was a little short with in replies, apologies, but it seems
lately anytime a question is asked, everyone first tries the "Blame the
Newbie" approach. Especially from some new to this list. They are just
trying to help but they often don't read previous posts or the whole
post they are replying to first - LOL.

Just because something works on your computer doesn't mean the same
thing works on someone else's as I've been finding out. It never
occurred to me that the problem was in the initial Win 7 pro install.
It started up with no problems and has been running since before
Christmas, getting regular updates and there have been no crashes or
anything.

Live and learn, I always say.

Anyway, many thanks to all who helped.

73,
Jim - W0EB

[Elecraft] K3S USB and MMTTY running SPLIT additional

2016-04-04 Thread Jim Sheldon
I should have been more specific in my post on observations. First off,
I have been getting a whole bunch of replies with "tutorials" on how to
run split, how RTTY works, etc. These are absolutely not needed. I've
been on RTTY since first licensed back in 1963, I know RTTY is LSB, etc.
I also have been using MMTTY since Mako first wrote it and know how to
set it up. I'm running true FSK keying via the K3S accessory connector
and a COM port. This works fine.

The K3S (note S, not K3) internal USB sound card outputs stereo, this I
also know. The 64 bit version of Windows 7 Professional which I have
running on an HP 6300 small form factor computer with an Intel Core i5
processor (true quad core) at 3.5 GHz and 16 gig of RAM.

MMTTY does NOT recognize the K3S sound card through the USB setup on the
above computer as being stereo and one can not select which audio stream
from the K3S is used by the program. That is a problem with Windows 7
Professional, not MMTTY.

I can easily use the sound card in the computer, but then I lose much of
the single cable functionality of the K3S built in USB.

I was merely observing that MMTTY WAS recognizing both streams
simultaneously and COULD apparently decode both.

Thanks for the newbie tutorials guys, but they are not needed.

[Elecraft] K3S USB and MMTTY running SPLIT

2016-04-04 Thread Jim Sheldon
Interesting observation while trying to work FT4JA on 30 meter RTTY last
night. Using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, I had been trying to find a stereo
mixer program that would allow 2 versions of MMTTY to run, one connected
to the left channel for the main RX and one to the right channel for the
sub RX via the K3S USB connection with the K3S in SPLIT.

Last night, I accidentally discovered that both channels were showing up
on ONE version of MMTTY running. I could set the main RX on the DX
station's frequency, lock it so it wouldn't move if bumped and whenever
FT4JA would transmit, I'd get mostly decent copy of what he was sending.
I could also, by judicious manipulation of VFO B, tune across the
pileup and also decode the stations there. I couldn't isolate one
channel from the other but they both decoded in MMTTY. Not sure how
that's happening, but it's an interim solution to the situation anyway.

Since I was seeing both decoded, I ran another instance of MMTTY, and
let it decode both as well.. That way there didn't appear to be a
conflict seeing the FT4 when he transmitted at the same time as one or
more stations in the pileup.

Didn't manage to work him, but at least I could see both ends of the
QSO's. Now I hope they run some more RTTY on a band I can hear them on
- LOL.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Decoding high speed CW

2016-03-28 Thread Jim Sheldon

Peter,
None of the decoders out there, including the better ones (internal to
the K3/K3S and the KX3) decode CW even close to accurately unless the
conditions are ideal and the sending operator is close to perfect in
his/her sending so the ultimate answer is "suck it up" and learn to
decode it in your head.

If you rely on the decoders, you will have difficulty in actually
learning to copy in your head and you will get enough call signs wrong
in your contest logs that they could even be rejected due to too many
"busted" calls.

That being said, as for the decoders, I was a Morse Intercept Operator
during the first 6 years of my 20 year Army Security Agency career. I
had the copying of Morse code drummed into my head 8 hours a day, but
that was copying mostly 5 letter or number coded groups on a typewriter.
It took a large amount of money to train us electronic spies, and the
NSA decided to design a decoder to replace us, figuring that a computer
could do a better job. They spent several millions of dollars on this
electronic black box (back in the 60's) and discovered that the human
brain was a much better decoder than a machine could ever be. Every
little static burst would disrupt the decoding and it would take a few
characters to catch back up. Also, if the code wasn't being sent by
automatic means (in those days that was a punched paper tape) and the
receiving conditions weren't very close to perfect (almost never happens
these days and even worse back then) the decoder output gibberish.
After a couple years of mostly abject failures and after spending
millions of dollars, they abandoned the project.

Wayne and others have done a marvelous job of computer coding, allowing
the firmware in Elecraft's radios (and other stand-alone devices) to
decode CW, but the above conditions apply to them as well as to NSA and
NSA spent a heck of a lot more money trying to achieve perfect copy than
Elecraft had in their coffers. Bottom line, use it for occasional help,
but work at learning to read it in your head yourself. It isn't as hard
as most people make it out to be and all it takes is practice. That's
the absolute bottom line, it takes practice. If you are willing to go
the extra mile and put in that practice, the rewards will outweigh the
initial frustrations.

73 and good luck,
Jim Sheldon - W0EB

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Decoding high speed CW

I became enamoured with N1MM+ after this weekend's contest and wanted
to
see if I can use it for other stuff like CW. I got the keying working
with
my K3S so that's no problem. The issue is I can't decode 30 WPM CW in
my

head. I need help.

I've been using the K3 Util terminal for CW contests and that's worked
out
well. I wanted to see if I can use both N1MM+ and K3 Util and share the
COM
port with LP-Bridge, but apparently K3 Util doesn't work with
LP-Bridge. I

also tried using FLDigi but the results weren't too great. It doesn't
decode most of the time.

Any suggestions (besides suck it up and learn to decode high speed in
my

head)?

Contact me off the reflector please. I don't want to get a FLDIGI

What's currently available through Source Forge is not what I need.

[Elecraft] OT: FS SingaLink USB with K3 & KX3 cables

2016-03-03 Thread Jim Sheldon
I have for sale a Tigertronics SignaLink USB that's about a year and a
half old. It comes with the "Plug-N-Play" pre-wired jumper headers for
both the Elecraft K3 and KX3 radios and also the proper interconnect
cables for both radios. The manual can be downloaded from the
Tigertronics website and the drivers also if necessary. (The Linux
version of FLDIGI recognizes it without any hassles). Cables for other
radios (would require either purchase of the proper header or wiring one
yourself to match the radio - see Tigertronics' website for further
info.

This is a USB external sound card designed to run most if not all of the
current digital modes almost seamlessly - provides TX/RX audio AND PTT.
Powered through the USB cable so no external power supply is needed.
TX/RX audio levels and PTT delay are adjustable via controls on the
front of the unit.

I'm asking $95 shipped anywhere in the U.S. via priority mail.

Pictures available via email on request. It's in excellent condition
and I made a couple PSK-31 contacts with it yesterday hooked to my K3S
to check it out.

Please contact me off list if interested and the first "I'll take it"
gets right of first refusal - first in will be determined by date/time
on the email.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S USB port

2016-03-03 Thread Jim Sheldon

Hi Fred,
Not the K3 utility, but I did have the P3 utility running simultaneously
for a time and it seemed to work just fine. It connected and pulled in
the FW versions I was looking for.

I did find what was giving the P3 it's information and the reason it had
a slight update delay. Turns out that FLDIGI on the Raspberry Pi 2 was
echoing the serial information via /devttyUSB0 from the Pi and that was
getting sent back to the P3 over the K3S's RS-232 on the RJ-45
connection. After I shut down FLDIGI on the Pi, the updates stopped and
the P3 no longer changed the displayed frequency as the K3S was tuned.
As soon as I restarted FLDIGI on the Pi 2, it went back to updating as
the K3S changed frequency (with a slight delay) and almost instantly if
the point and click controls in FLDIGI were used to change frequency.

I understand what's happening now and it seems to be only with the Pi 2
and FLDIGI that it works this way. Could prove to be useful, but I
don't plan to rely on it - LOL.

Hi Jim,
It's my understanding that the RS232 port is live for serial data out
from the K3 (RXD) but not for serial data in (TXD).
Have you tried to use the K3 Utility with your set up? That would
require bidirectional serial data and in theory shouldn't work.

First off, this is NOT a complaint, merely an observation. and in my
opinion, worthy of note for the programmers to check out. I didn't
think this was supposed to work but it seems to work quite well, at
least in my case.

I am using serial RS-232 with the following cabling - Desktop COM-1 to
P3, P3 to K3S using the DE-9 to RJ-45 adapter (not the two headed cable
between the P3 and K3S) from my desktop computer. I am also running
the

USB port cable to a Raspberry Pi model 2, single board Linux computer
with the K3S configured as the USB Audio Codecs AND serial comms using
/devttyUSB0 for rig control with VOX for PTT, in FLDIGI on the
Raspberry

Pi. All serial speeds are set to 38.4K baud.

The P3 still indicates the K3S frequency as I tune (slight delay),
FLDIGI on the Pi 2 indicates the K3S frequency as I tune. TX/RX audio
from and to FLDIGI on the Pi 2 work properly, and I am able to make
contacts with no problem as well. I can also tune the K3S using
FLDIGI's frequency control. I am using N3FJP's AC Log program on the
big desktop computer for logging and it also displays the proper
band/mode from the K3S. It also follows frequency changes made by the
FLDIGI program on the Pi 2. I did not attempt to configure DTR or RTS
for push to talk as VOX works so well.

It was my original understanding that you couldn't do this (RS-232
using

the RJ-45 jack AND the USB port simultaneously). I DO have the K3S
RS-232 configured to USB in the menu. The difference may be due to the
fact that I'm using two separate computers here with both
talking/listening to the K3S.

I'm running FW version UC 5.46, DSP 1 and 2 version 2.86, FL version
1.25 on the K3S and MCU 1.57, SVGA 1.31 and the FPGA's 1.04 in the P3.

DISCLAIMER: If anyone else tries this, make sure to SAVE YOUR
CONFIGURATION prior to making any changes so you won't forget what they
were before and if something messes up you can re-load the previous
version.

Yup, I just closed FLDIGI on the Pi 2 and now the P3 no longer gets the
frequency data from the K3S as I have it configured. Turns out
everything was working as it should and the anomaly was caused by the
running program on the 2nd computer. Might prove useful in some cases
but I can see it may not be reliable.

/devttyUSB0 for rig control with VOX for PTT, in FLDIGI on the Raspberry

It was my original understanding that you couldn't do this (RS-232 using
the RJ-45 jack AND the USB port simultaneously).

DISCLAIMER: If anyone else tries this, make sure to SAVE YOUR
CONFIGURATION prior to making any changes so you won't forget what they
were before and if something messes up you can re-load the previous
version.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S USB port question

2016-03-02 Thread Jim Sheldon

Thanks Lyle,
I thought that was the way it should work, but I couldn't find it in the
books (not sure if I overlooked it or might be something that needs to
be added). Anyway that saves me a whole lot of shack re-wiring and I'll
be able to run two instances of MMTTY for SPLIT copy of the 2nd RX.

Also gets the HUGE HAL ST-8000A off the desk and frees up a bunch of
room on the monitor shelf.

Yes. Set the RS232 menu item to the speed you want. If it is not in
USB in that menu, then it is using the regular RS232 port.

To use the USB audio for Tx, be sure no cable is plugged into the
analog LINE IN jack.

Can the K3 be controlled using RS-232 via the RJ-45 while
simultaneously using the USB connection for it's sound card functions?

difinitive answer in the books. If it can do this, I won't have to
re-configure all my software and it would save me a bunch of time - LOL.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 output power spikes

2016-03-01 Thread Jim Sheldon
Thanks David for posting this. I noticed this from time to time with my
old K3 and now also with the new K3S. I keep the KPA500 output set to
around 400-450 watts most of the time and notice spikes to 550 or so on
the first or second dit when sending CW at times. I just built the kit
and have done the TX calibrations properly and they all passed via the
Utility program.

I'm using the factory supplied #12 gauge power cable and the power
supply is a pretty well regulated MFJ 4245MV switcher (RFI quiet here).
This supply is adjustable and evidently the meter isn't totally accurate
or there is a larger voltage drop in the cable than I thought there
should be. I checked the K3S' meter display after receiving this email
and it read 13.2 volts. Keyed to 13.8 volts on the meter, but at 20
watts out, driving the amplifier, it dropped to 12.6 volts while keyed.

In line with your findings, I set the MFJ supply to read 13.8 volts on
the K3S display and it now only drops to 13.3 volts under the 20 watt
load. The occasional power spikes seem to have disappeared, so it's
something everyone should take a look at if they do experience the power
spike problem.

Again, thanks for posting this David.

My K3 s/n 4487 has exhibited similar behaviour since I built it in
2010.
Despite calls to Elecraft Support no solution was found despite Gary
talking
me through various items until a month or so ago when the spike was
causing
problems with my amp on 24 Mhz. It was mentioned that the K3 must see
13
volts whenever it is transmitting and to check this on the front panel
by
tapping the Display button. Mine showed 13.6 volts on receive and 12.6
volts
on Tx. Turned out my old power supply regulation was faulty. Anyway
after a
power supply rebuild and further check it now shows 13.6 volts on
receive
and 13.3 volts on Tx at 100 watts output. A further TX calibration
completed

the process and so far no power spikes! So check your power supply is
supplying sufficient voltage on key down.

[Elecraft] K3, K3S and KX3 - Raspberry Pi 2 as a control/logging computer

2016-02-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
I recently picked up a Raspberry Pi 2 to use as a small internet
computer in case the main desktop died. So far I've been pretty
impressed with it's ham radio capabilities.

FLDIGI was pretty easy to get running though I haven't progressed to the
USB hookup on my K3S yet (a few other programs to get running first).
In the Logging Programs thread, CQRLOG was mentioned as a good Linux
based logging program and I have successfully gotten it running on the
Pi 2. It is a little tricky to install and there is at least one
depencency (mysql) that isn't in the CQRLOG package so you're on your
own finding and installing that first.

There are others out there that apparently have some version of the RPi
running as a K3/KX3 control computer, so this is really nothing new,
just a reiteration of the fact it can be done and the little single
board Linux box seems to be up to the task.

I'd look forward to seeing how someone else has done the K3S USB
interface (off line please to avoid Eric's wrath for too much clutter on
the reflector) and as I get time I'll continue the attempt myself. As
far as I have gotten, everything appears to work well and using WiFi, I
have a stable internet connection which is absolutely necessary to keep
frustration to a minimum when looking for and installing programs on the
Pi 2.
