[Elecraft] Remoting an Elecraft K4 radio with N4PY Software

2021-07-04 Thread John K9UWA
Carl N4PY has Pegasus Plus ready for Elecraft K4 radios. All you
need other than Carl's program is a VPN like Teamviewer or
Splashtop Streamer to get from your remote computer to your radio
computer.

I myself John K9UWA have K4D radio #132

Click up Carl's website.
http://www.n4py.com/

The new software is on his test page. Go to Carl's website at
www.n4py.com.
Then click on "More" and select the test page. Download and install
n4py444C.exe beta version 4.44C. This has all the K4 changes.

To configure the program for the Elecraft K4 over ethernet:
a) Start the program.
b) Select "Settings" at the top of the Radio screen.
c) In the "Interface" window, select "Elecraft K4 Ethernet".
d) Exit Pegasus Plus.
e) Restart Pegasus Plus.
f) In the K4, use the K4 menu to find the IP Address.
g) In Pegasus, in the interface settings window, put in the
IP Address in the "Radio IP" edit box.
h) Exit and restart Pegasus Plus again and you should be running.

Re: [Elecraft] Free shipping

2020-07-31 Thread John K9UWA
Eric spelled it out nicely. I say quit crabbing. I doubt that anyone on this
list
is "Radioless".

Elecraft will get our new radios here as soon as they can do so. Any who
are ahead of me that want to quit please do so get your money back so I
move closer to the start of the shipping. My K4HD will be here when it gets
here. In the meantime the K3S is in place and the K3 is the backup.

Re: [Elecraft] Computer Monitor Recommendations

2020-06-13 Thread John K9UWA
THANK YOU K9YC Jim

I have read all the monitor solutions offered since the OP posted his question
yesterday.
#1 I never met a monitor yet that didn't emit RFI and at least 90% of the noise
was
from the no surprise here Switching Power Supply. That said I purchase two LG
LCD monitors 2 years ago that have EXTERNAL WALL WART supplies. No I
didn't want to go inside a brand new monitor to try curing the SMPS noise. I
can
replace a Wall Wart 19 volts 2 amps. Nice Lambda regulated power supply. I
think it weighs around 20 pounds. I added #31 mix cores to the AC cord on the
Lambda supply plus #31 mix cores on the 19v to each Monitor.

The Test? Transistor scanning radio that scans from LW up through VHF. While
listening to the monitor and yes I can hear it a couple inches from the LCD
screen
but no farther than that. And Zero RF noise when listening to the DC line to
the
monitors or the AC line to the Lambda 0 to 20v supply.

Re: [Elecraft] 75ohm Impedance question K3S and Antenna side.

2020-04-01 Thread John K9UWA
Supposedly the feedpoint impedance is 52 ohms ??? Yes, I question that a bit.
Read all about it here. Sorry I doubled the 1/2 wave mults.

https://www.dxengineering.com/search/department/antennas/section/hf-vertical-a
ntennas/brand/hustler-antenna/product-line/hustle

Hustler Antenna 6BTV - Hustler 6BTV 6-Band HF Vertical Antenna and DXE
Installation Guide Packages
Antenna, Vertical, HF, 6-Band, 80, 40, 30, 20, 15, 10 meters, 1.5 kW, 24 ft., +
DXE BTV High Perf. Guide, Each $241.99

Performance provided by the Hustler 6BTVs is better than any other antenna of
this type. Broad-banding is such that one measurement and setting permits both
phone and CW operation. The antenna provides nominal 52-ohm base
impedance when installed and tuned according to the instructions. The radiation
efficiency is equal to, or greater than, other trap verticals.

Re: [Elecraft] 75ohm Impedance question K3S and Antenna side.

2020-04-01 Thread John K9UWA
Ah YES I noticed it is for a multi band antenna.

2 wavelengths 3540 = 265'
4 wavelengths 7080 = 265'
6 wavelengths 10600 = 265'
8 wavelengths 14160 = 265'
12 wavelngths 21240 = 265'
16 wavelengths 28320 = 265'

Multiply the 265' by velocity factor of the coax and you will be someplace just
a bit
over 200 feet.

the 10mhz band is off a bit. So OK... other than that 80, 40, 20, 15,10 are all
harmonically related. As I said 50 in and 50 out. If the OP runs this
vertical on 17
and 12m then yes he will have maybe a 1.5 / 1 mismatch caused by the coax. But
the antenna isn't designed for 17 and 12.

I cut all the 3/4" CATV in my system with a Hewlett Packard HP 4815A Vector
Impedance Meter. Any 1/2 wave mult the the SWR is the same in as out. Any
ODD 1/4 wavelength multiple creates a transformation With Multiple 4 hi stacks
of
yagi's I have many of those in the system as well. 75 ohm cable works well to
put
pairs or quads of yagi's together.

The only thing that maybe won't be perfect is the actual vertical itself may
not be a
50 ohm input. His vertical is a Hustler 6BTV.

Re: [Elecraft] 75ohm Impedance question K3S and Antenna side.

2020-03-31 Thread John K9UWA
Cut the hardline to multiples of 1/2 wavelength and the swr will be 1 to 1 on
both
ends. 50 in 50 out. In this case the OP needs around 200 feet. Once your get
the
velocity factor for the 1/2" hardline... that is ballpark 80 to 83%. for 3.540
mhz is
265 feet x .8 = 212 feet. If you don't have a piece of test gear to get it
cut
correctly then put a 50 ohm dummy load at the far end keep cutting until your
wattmeter says 1 to 1 swr. 1/2 wave multiples will hit most of the ham bands. A
little high in the 30m band. Close enough.

Re: [Elecraft] Dual Receivers 2 different antennas Diversity receive

You could use a device such as the KD9SV FES "short for Front End Saver" The
Device removes and grounds the receive antenna input during transmit. Yes it is
fast enough for QSK. You can also run your PTT line to your amplifier through
this
device. If the Device fails to work that prevents the amplifier from being

[Elecraft] OT question regarding RemAud sound program

2019-08-30 Thread John K9UWA
I have for several years used RemAud https://df3cb.com/remaud/ as a 2

perfectly on a Windows 7 computer until I was forced to get a Windows 10
computer to run the station as Server / remote. And I have been unable to
make the program work on Windows 10.

Are there any others using RemAud with a windows 10 computer having

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

One would think that K3s represents multiple K3 radios. As in Plural of K3.

I am sure that it causes some confusion to many who read the Elecraft reflector
or
other places where the radios are discussed.

I do thank Wayne and Eric for a list that says. The new radio has the following
differences to the K3 radio. As well as the portions of the K3 that can not be
upgraded to equal the new K3S radio.

Re: [Elecraft] Avoiding costly lightning damage to your radios gear

2018-10-30 Thread John K9UWA
In the fall of 1988 I installed a 160 foot tower. I already had a 120 foot
tower and
an 88 foot tower In the spring of 1989 the tall tower was hit by a direct hit
and it
was about 10K to repair all the damage. My homeowners insurance company was
not at all impressed. I was given Assigned Risk Homeowners insurance and they
also told me. You have 30 days to either get all those antennas and towers on
the
ground or else install a "Commercial Grounding System" or else your insurance
is
cancelled. At that time I am sure the mortgage company woudn't have been at all
impressed.

During the summer of 1989 I installed. 100 Ground Rods some in a radial pattern
away from the towers and some in a perimeter ground around the house. The
Radial pattern from the towers is in excess of 1/3rd the total height of the
tall
tower. ground rods are all 16 feet apart. All are connected by 3/8" inside
diameter
copper tubing silver soldered to the ground rods. A total of about 1200 feet of
copper tubing. I installed many Polyphaser protection devices on coax cable
lines
Rotors 5 of them on the three towers relay boxes to switch the 30 some yagi
antennas on the towers and wire low band antennas. Hundreds of wires
connecting all the relay switchboxes that select whatever antenna configuration
you might want. In addition to all of the above we have Whole House Protection
device on the main breaker box. And an additional one on a Sub Breaker box that
is in the hamshack room. All devices in the hamshack have their own grounding
strap that is connected directly to the ground strap a 2 inch wide copper strap
along the backside of the table that has the equipment on it. As a last line of
defense each Band Coax that enters the hamshack room has one of MFJ's Arc
Plug switches and I have never blown any of the arc plugs. Because I am in
Florida for 6 months of the year and the station is in Northern Indiana I
operate it
remotely while in Florida.

I am the lightning rod for the entire neighborhood. I am within a few feet of
being
the highest point in the county.

The tall tower has had MANY direct hits since installing the commercial style
ground system in 1989. I had a Hit Counter on the tower for a few years until I
broke it one day while climbing on the tower. I think the counter had over 100
hits
registered. To Date ZERO DAMAGE to anything in the house or on the towers.
That is ZERO DAMAGE. A great big THANK YOU to the guys at Polyphaser for
all the advice as to what to install and where to install it.

I do have to retract one portion of the above statement. Once after a major hit
the
whole house protector on the main breaker box was smoking after the hit. Wife
came into the shack and said that box on the breaker box is smoking. I told
Jean
that the box wasn't old enough to smoke. She didn't see the humor in that one.
I
called Polyphaser on the phone and the nice lady asked me one question. Was
anything in the house damaged other than the whole house protector? I answered
NO everything in the house and on the towers is all OK. I then asked her to
overnite me a replacement box since it was at that time over 10 years old and
finally gave its little life to allow the rest of the house ZERO DAMAGE. We
were
into our normal major spring time storm season. New Whole House protector
arrived and was installed the next day.

And to date Twenty Nine years later
ZERO DAMAGE Again a big thank you to Polyphaser Turn BLITZ into BLISS.

So YES a Tower can be protected from damage. When the TV stations and Radio
station towers get hit they don't even go off air. Neither does my Ham Station.

Copy the URL below into your favorite browser for a you tube video of my QTH.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXvRrummVFY

The Video was made while we were installing a new low band receive antenna at
150 foot level on the tower. Drone and GoPro headband cameras. Yes that crane
would do 275 feet from it's base. Yes that is ME in the Man Cage along with Dan
one of the Fruchey Iron workers. I wearing the GoPro headband camera and my
friend Dino Raptis KR9V operating his Drone. Thanks to Dino KR9V as all the
video equipment is his and his editing to produce the You Tube Video

Re: [Elecraft] USB mouse support for P3SVGA -- please don't neglect the scroll wheel

2018-07-28 Thread John K9UWA
Clay think about those of us who operate our stations remotely. My arm isn't
long enough to reach the knobs on the K3 or the P3 or any of the other
pieces of equipment in my station. I spend my winters in Florida. Station is in
Indiana. We need total operation via mouse and keyboard. And the ability to
size each window as needed. Think about Monitor Real Estate for the
various programs running on the RadioComputer.

Re: [Elecraft] Dish/Direct TV RFI?

2018-03-14 Thread John K9UWA
A little clarification is due. Sorry I missed a couple parts in my original
response
this morning to Reed's question about DirecTV rcvrs.

My first omission. I do not use DirecTV for internet. Only for TV-reception. It
would
be horrible for internet. No Satellite Internet would work for anyone depending
on
internet to operate your own ham station remotely due to latency and or packet
loss. My internet is provided through a CATV company.

I have never had a problem with ingress of my Ham Station into the DirecTV
system so I never considered that as an issue. I do run 1500W on 160-10m.

Next part. Those who claim that the direcTV receivers don't make any noise into
their Amateur Radio stations probablly have not listened to their DirecTV
receivers
with a Noise Sniffer, AM-transistor radio tuned off station; Small loop
attached to
your Ham Radio receiver that can be placed close to this receiver and other
devices in your home. Sniffer receiver used is an old Sony 2001-ICF It doesn't
have ANL. It can be tuned to most any frequency of interest, It has both
internal
an directional loop antenna and a nice long extendable whip that you can reach
easily close to your Wall Warts, DirecTV receivers, TV sets, Computers Modems
Routers fluorescent Lights LED lights. Try a walkabout your homes with such
noise listening devices.

You just might be surprised at how much noise you are getting into your ham
radio antennas. Once you eliminate the top tier of noise generators in your
home
then you begin to hear the next level down noise generators. There are zero
fluorescent ballasts in my home. All have been replaced by yes I did find quiet
direct wire LED bulbs for replacements. Zero Variable speed motors, Fans or
light
dimmers. Many other devices as well as the wall wart switchers are gone or
choked to stop the noise.

Additional excellent information of noise location and cures at

Re: [Elecraft] Dish/Direct TV RFI?

2018-03-14 Thread John K9UWA
Hi Reed

YES ! DirecTV receivers are horrible racket makers.
#1 I built a new power cord for the receivers wired into a 12V ASTRON regulated
12v supply. No More Switcher Wall Warts allowed at my QTH.

#2 The HDMI cable from the Rcvr to the TV set has 12 turns through a stack of
TWO of the 2.4" diameter Ferrite #31 mix cores.

Several other 12v devices are also connected to that same Astron supply.
Modem, Router etc. Now that rcvr is quiet.

Re: [Elecraft] RX antenna protection

2017-08-15 Thread John K9UWA
We have been operating this way with full break-in for many years using the
KD9SV products. First it was just the "Front End Saver" which removes and
grounds the incoming rcv antenna from your radio during transmit. As a "Fail
Safe" the device also prevents the Amplifier from working by removing the
PTT line to the amp if by any chance the relays in the KD9SV device fail to
operate. Later it is now incorporated into the various RBOG and other
Pre-Amp devices that KD9SV sells... through DX-Engineering.

Disclaimer Statement: Yes I am a friend of Gary's. Call me a more than
happy customer. I complained many years ago after I fried the front end of
my IC-765 radios a couple times and Gary started building these devices.
They Work and I am happy. No more blown front ends no more blown
pre-amps.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Ground rods and concrete

2017-04-18 Thread John K9UWA
If you have a 50 foot tower with a tribander on it among a bunch of 70 foot or
taller Trees then perhaps you will survive lightning strikes without major
damage. However if you have something like my situation things change
rapidly. I have three towers the tallest is 175 feet to the top antenna. Trees
are all at 75 feet or less. I am the neighborhood lightning rod. I installed
this
tower in late 1988 and in early 1989 we sustained a major hit. It blew up
every radio computer the microwave the frig the TV sets. lots of coax and
many other things made from metal. My station is in northern Indiana so we
do get some nice thunderstorms. Not as bad as Florida but bad enough. My
Assigned Risk insurance company said you have 30 days to either get that
stuff all on the ground or install a "Commercial Grade" Grounding system.

For the How to do it please read this 96 page PDF from Polyphaser.
Polyphaser Grounding Guide

After discussion with a couple of the Polyphaser Engineers who were also
HAMS I purchsed all the goodies and we set about to create the ground
system. It includes Whole House protection from Any wire that comes or
goes from the house.

This tower gets at least a dozen major hits per year. Since 1989 when the
system was installed I have had Almost ZERO damage. The ONLY thing
damaged was about 5 years ago the Whole House Protector on the Main
Breaker box gave up its little life to save everything else in the house. I
replaced it with a new one and all has been excellent prior to and since that
time.

The suggested Polyphaser Tower Grounding system looks a lot like that of
the QST article from 2002 previously posted by one of our other posters.
Radials 8 of them coming out from the tower. Polyphaser said they needed
to be 1/3rd the length of the top antenna with 8 foot ground rods each 16
feet along the radial. And of course one of the radials goes to the house
where the Single Ground Window... big aluminum plate with many protectors
and two ground rods to hold it in place is located. And the Perimeter ground
progresses around the house from that location. In my case since I have
three towers in a triangle shape they said single run from tower to tower with
again 8 foot ground rod each 16 feet along the way. Then rather than the 8
Radials from the single tower there are two starting outward from each of
the other 2 shorter towers. #2 tower 130 foot and #3 88 foot tall. On those
towers are about 20 yagi antennas 5 rotors and many many antenna
switching boxes. Mostly Ameritron RCS-8V many modified as phase
controllers for stack yagis.
The back yard has 100 8 foot long ground rods connect by 1200 feet or 3/8"
ID copper tubing. Silver Soldered to the Ground Rods.

So read and heed the PDF from Polyphaser. It works!!

TEN people complain or discuss the what and wherefore as to whether the post

And here I am adding to the SPAM With all the people posting complaints or

Personally I hope the OP found a buyer for his coax.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI and Direct tv or Dish network

2016-05-18 Thread John K9UWA
Jim is 100% correct. The Direct TV receivers are HORRIBLE for noise
generation. Maybe you can't hear it if your Ham Antenna is far enough away
but it is there for sure. I bought a Sony model ICF-2001 to use looking for
various noises about the house. You don't want the later models as they
have auto noise blankers in them. The radio covers AM/SW/FM and does
AM or SSB.

Jim is exactly correct regarding the Wall Wart type switcher supply on these
Direct TV receivers. They are 12.6 vdc so easy for us Hams to pick up a
nice small linear transformer powered regulated supply. I also hooked up
the Modem and Router to this same linear supply. Yes every one of them
made noise.

Next the HDMI cable from the Direct TV receiver to the TV set also mades
lots of racket. I use TWO of the FT-240 mix 31 cores and managed to get
about 5 turns through both chokes. That killed the HDMI cable noise.

[Elecraft] K3 radio no receive no transmit

2016-04-07 Thread John K9UWA
My K3 is acting up a bit. No Receive No Transmit. I operate this radio
remotely so all I can tell you is that it appears to be all working as per the
HRD screen I am looking at. The radio appears to switch to transmit and I
hear the monitor CW being sent but no output on the wattmeter. The only
noise coming from the radio is inter radio noise it the volume is turned to
max. A slight TAP on the top of the case and the radio goes back into
perfect normal operation. I am guessing that some plug someplace inside
the radio isn't making proper contact.

Does anyone have any idea which plug and its location?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-25 Thread John K9UWA
THANKS JIM

After 4+ years of dealing with the inability to reprogram the KRC2. Finally the
real Answer as to how to connect the KRC2 to the Serial DB9 of your
computer and program it with the Utility Program. Yes 4 years ago when I
assembled the KRC2 after three very long frustrating days I managed to get
the band map program to work and the box is programmed up for 9 HF
bands. And I like many others now wish to reprogram it for SIX meter
antenna.

A simple statement in the KRC2 manual could have been added by Elecraft
stating. To Program your KRC2 to your K3 radio get a standard DB9 serial
cable. and CUT OFF all wires EXCEPT 2, 3 and 5. Mark the cable Program
KCR2 ONLY and save the cable for future use. I wonder how many
additional KRC2 boxes Elecraft could have sold over the last 4 years?

Again thanks Jim for the simple solution.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 rs232 to cpu not working

2015-10-21 Thread John K9UWA
ATTENTION: Eric

Elecraft has for several years been saying they were going to rewrite the
horrible KRC2 Utility Program that allows programming of the KRC2. And so
far they have failed to do so. Way back when about 4 years ago I did
manage ONCE to get the KRC2 Utility program to work and programmed
my KRC2. Yes today I would love to reprogram it to allow connection to a
SIX meter antenna. However as you say the program won't work. I tried on
Computer running XP and one running Windows7 both with direct real Serial
Port connection to the KRC2. No Luck for me.

Eric many of us K3 users are using the KRC2 for band decoder to antenna
switching it sure would be nice if we could program the KRC2 easily to do
what we want.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Unplugging the radio to protect it

2015-10-08 Thread John K9UWA
With three towers top is at 170 feet above ground level. Tallest trees are
about 80 feet. We do get HIT lots of times per year. I unplug NOTHING.

HOWEVER every wire and anything that is metal that comes and goes from
our house is protected by a Polyphaser Protective device. Buried in the yard
at 100 ground rods. Each one is 8 feet. Spaced at 16 foot intervals as a
Triangle between the three towers plus radial strips outward from the towers
to at least 1/3rd the total height. Plus perimeter ground around the house. As
you have seen leave just one little wire someplace that isn't protected and
POOF as they say damage to lots of things can happen.

Consider the today many Ham Stations are remotely operated as is my
station. No way to disconnect and reconnect. So it is either fix the stuff so
it
doesn't blow up or else deal with the consequences.

If you haven't already seen it this is a video a friend took at my place a week
or so ago when we installed a new Low Band Receiving antenna.

Yes. The HRD team worked diligently when they released version 6.x and
corrected the flaws in the rig control portion of the software that
affected the K3. Users can now control nearly any function of the K3 from
HRD. I've used the entire HRD suite for many years and have been very happy

 it.

Re: [Elecraft] Audio latency issues in remote stations.

2015-03-02 Thread John K9UWA
I would add to Jim's comment that it Varies considerably depending on
YOUR internet connection on both ends. The lousy ISP I am stuck with. Only
Show in Town I get 5M download and 0.3 upload. That is the fastest
available. The Ping Time is inconsistent at 45 ms up to 290 ms. And
sometimes the access to the internet just disappears for 10 to 15 seconds at
a time. Most of you will have access to much better ISP's. My Home ISP
where my station is located ping is consistant at 37ms download rate is
30mb and upload rate is 10mb.
John k9uwa

The major contribution to latency is the internet, and it is not constant.

switches some antennas and has one button to TURN ON the radio by

[Elecraft] How do I turn OFF my K3 remotely

2014-10-24 Thread John K9UWA
Can someone tell me how to turn OFF my K3 radio remotely through HRD.
All I could find in the archives was this simple statement.

From HRD If one wants to get fancy, you can even shut down
the K3 using the Power off command through the serial communications
port, and then shut down the computer too.

Well no other explanation was given. So that might be fine for some
computer expert but doesn't tell me anything other than yes it is possible.
Can someone point me to a step by step instructions on how to turn off the
K3 radio by remote?

Re: [Elecraft] Unhook *ALL* connections before Lightning storm

2014-07-15 Thread John K9UWA
Do TV Stations and Radio Stations and Cellphone towers disconnect all
their equipment everytime there is a storm in the area?

Obviously the answer is NO they don't disconnect and they don't even turn
their equipment off. Yet is survives direct lightening hits on their towers and
equipment.

In other words there are ways that you also can protect your equipment
without disconnecting it. You need a well designed ground system. This
means a single ground system for everything that is in your home or a part
of your antenna system. During a direct strike on the tower 90% of the hit
should be bled off directly to ground through the ground system made up of
many ground rods all connected together by proper copper connection. This
leaves around 10% of the hit left for all the Devices that are connected to
all the metal anythings that come and go from your home. Includes incoming
power lines Telco lines Cable TV lines as well as all your rotor control lines
relay lines and coax cables from the antennas. Anything that is metal that
comes and goes from the house needs a protection device on it.

I have three towers the tallest has antennas up to 175 feet above ground.
The tallest trees here are around 70 feet high. So the towers get hit many
times. They have been up since 1988. During the summer of 1989 I had a
major hit on the tall tower that destroyed nearly everything in the house. TV
sets microwaves all radios all computers many coax cables and other wires.
But I learned the hard way to protect my system. I was placed on High Risk
Homeowners insurance and the company that was assigned my insurance
said I had 30 days to either get a proper ground system installed of get
those towers all on the ground. We installed 100 ground rods all connected
together by 1200 feet of 3/8 ID copper tubing. We installed a single point
ground window where all the cables coming and going to the towers enter
the house. Every wire has some sort of protection device on it. The main
power line coming to the house has a protector device on it. The towers and
antennas have since then withstood many strikes by lightening. Many
surges from hits down the road that come in on the power lines. All with
ZERO DAMAGE to anything in the house or on the towers. I did get lots of
help from the techs at Polyphaser regarding how to build the system and
how to install it. Total cost of this grounding system in 1989 was around
$3,000 for all of it. Zero Labor as I and a couple other local hams installed
all
of it. Today we operate the station remotely during part of the winter so no
way to unhook and rehook any of it.

So you too can be safe and not worry about blowing up your equipment.

2014-06-18 Thread John K9UWA
Sorry to hear about your near hit and the damage Cary

Start here. So it doesn't happen again.
http://www.smithspower.com/brands/polyphaser

You need to protect all incoming wires from your antennas, relay boxes,
rotors and any control boxes that are on the tower. You also need to protect
your AC lines coming to at least the Ham Shack and better yet the Whole
House protection is much better. It doesn't take much to kill the many low
voltage devices we all have in our hamshacks and homes today.

Re: [Elecraft] How do I generate a Key Down to tune an external 6m amp?

2014-01-18 Thread John K9UWA
Yes Randy is correct. The Tube dealers LOVE people who tune up with a
Brick on the Key. Kills your Tubes much faster. Plus you get a much more
accurate tuneup by sending dots than you do with a solid tone. It duplicates
your actual transmissions using dots rather than solid tone.
Its really easy to do guys. Just set your coffee cup against the paddles
making dots and turn the knobs on your amp.

John k9uwa

If I am not mistaken I think the proper way of tuning the amp is with a
pulser or sending a string of dits at say 60wpm not a solid tone.

Joe said it smells and I'm just really curious why.
As far as I am concerned, remote operation changes the character of
amateur radio from over the air amateur radio to landline based
commercial communication at least in part. When the operator is not
present at the station (transmitting/receiving site) the radio part
of the communications path can become infinitesimal - nothing more
than a hand-held link to the nearest access point.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] [KRC2] Is there a KRC3 in the works?

2011-10-14 Thread John K9UWA
Somehow ONCE two plus years ago I managed after maybe 100 trys to
get the KRC-2 programmed to do what I wanted with it.

Now I would love to reprogram it for 6 meters but am scared to death to
attempt it. If somehow the KRC-2 does get reprogrammed but incorrectly
I fear I would never get it back at least to where it is today.

This really needs to be addressed with a new or modified program that
WORKS.

John k9uwa

To be clear, I have no issues with interfacing the KRC2 with external
 devices.

The only issue I've had is using the Windows-based program provided on
the Elecraft web site to attempt to configure the behavior of the KRC2.
It always fails to connect to the KRC2, no matter what settings I try,
on both the KRC2 and the computer, including using two different
varieties of USB to serial cables (both of which work with all my other
equipment, including the K3 and P3), and a laptop from work that has a
 real serial port.

On the other hand, the re-flash program works just dandy. I can
re-flash the KRC2 at will, over and over again, ad infitum, ad nauseum.
So, I don't think the problem lies in the computer to KRC2 interface.
I've been tempted to reverse-compile the KRC2 code file, which is rather
small, so I could just patch the configuration table in the flash image,
recompute the checksum and re-flash. Maybe if I wasn't putting in 50+
hours a week at my day job, and about 15 hours commuting a week on top
of that, I'd feel like I had more time to spend on such a fascinating
adventure. I have 30+ years embedded software development experience,
so it really wouldn't be all that hard for me.

As it is, I'd rather spend what spare time I have building my station
and operating, instead of debugging the KRC2 configuration software.

P.S. Everyone at Elecraft has been really nice when I talk to them about
my KRC2 issues, and offer to help, then it just seems to fall into a
black hole. It seems to me that the KRC2 support is really just not on
anyone's priority list. I guess that would be fine with me, and I could
just go about figuring out how to work around it.

I have had issues with my KRC2 much of it is the poor operations manual
and interfacing to the K3. Jack at Elecraft and Gary have been great to
work with. Many of my problems appear to have been from jumper issues.
The documentation needs some major work in the way of examples of how to
hook up the unit to other devices etc.

I had issues with the Array Solutions band decoders and Don, Jack and
Gary were all very helpful in solving them. There are many answers due
to the fact that there are absolutely no standards when it comes to
devices such as bandpass filters etc. Some companies put pull up
resistors in their devices others do not.

If you want a device that can control your bandpass filters and multiple
antenna boxes look at the Microham Station Master. It gathers band data
from the Aux line and looks pretty slick. If I needed a box that did
more than just drive my bandpass filters I would own one!

I'm about to order the Ameritron control box now, because it will accept 1

Can anyone who is running this setup on SSB tell me exactly what cabling
and settings you have for the MIC and AUDIO OUT on the K3 radio back in
the shack On the Shack Computer?

I have been running my K3 + Alpha87A for the last two winters from my
Laptop in Florida and the Shack and Home computer in Indiana. Works
great on CW but on SSB all hookups have created Ack Ack Ack on and off
of the VOX curcuitry or else don't produce any audio to the MIC of the radio.
Tried every antivox and mic gain setting I could find. Has to be some
problem with the way I am cabling it all up?

Runnng Ham Radio Deluxe on the shack computer and link between the
computers is a VPN for remoting the desktop plus MS Portrait for the audio
back and forth.

thanks
John k9uwa

 Very slick iPad app. Thanks.

This can also be done by the non-Apple crowd in the PC world using MSN
Messenger and a public ILS server (or the old mSN Connect) or other desktop
sharing utility like adobe connect to share desktop control between 2 PCs.

The shack PC needs to be left turned on and connected to the K3 and running an
 app like Ham Radio Deluxe.

Just share desktops between the 2 machines (with control enabled) and you
 can run any keyboard mode.

Nowhere near as elegant a solution, but something I was doing 4 or 5 years
 ago in my pre-K3 days.

Re: [Elecraft] Ligntning protection

2011-04-12 Thread John K9UWA
As Dale stated Polyphaser is the way to go guys.

As to the RISK. I live in Northern Indiana where thunder and lightning are
common many times per year. I have three
towers with the top antenna at 175 foot level. Trees here barely make it to 70
feet. So I am IT. There is no DISCONNECT
during such storms. If I ever disconnected this station it would take a couple
weeks to do so. Longer to reconnect it. 5 rotors on the
three towers. Twenty Aluminum Yagi antennas for 40-10 meters plus numerous wire
antennas. Relay control lines to switch all this
stuff.

After a rather nasty strike back in 1988 when I first installed a good share of
this stuff. Insurance claim was close to 10K. Insurance
company said: We don't want you. We did find an Assigned Risk Company who took
us. They said 90 days to either get all that
stuff on the ground or install a commercial ground system.

Yes its lots of work and no its not cheap but let me tell you it does WORK. As
Dale stated the Tower has been direct hit many
times since 1988. Nothing is ever disconnected. Zero Damage has happened. Yes
there are 100 ground rods buried in my yard.
Yes they are connected by 1200 feet of copper 3/8 ID Tubing. It has a lower
inductance per foot than 2 inch wide copper strap.
Plus its cheaper. Same stuff as used to hook up AC systems with. I thought I
owned STOCK in Polyphaser for a while.

Contesters maybe used to recognize my callsign K9UWA and today they will
recognize K9NW Mike as he operates the station in
many contests. All with today one little K3 radio. I operate it remotely during
the winters from Florida myself.

so YES you can protect your whole station if you are willing to spend a little
money and do a little WORK. Certainly beats the
alternative of trying to find all the things that are messed up after Mother
Nature takes its course. The expense really isn't all that
great when compared to the cost of the radios, amplifiers, computers, TV sets,
refrigerators and other things that are blown up by
the lightning hits.

It is a scary spectacular display when the tower is hit just after dark. Once
it happened when we had a birthday party here with
about 40 friends present. About 1/2 of them were Hams. I think some needed a
change of underwear afterwards.

[Elecraft] K3 to KRC2 problem

2010-12-17 Thread John K9UWA
My K3 has worked flawlessly up until now. Lately when you Grab a DX Spot or
punch in
a band change on HamRadioDeluxe the KRC-2 fails to make the proper change of the
Antenna Selection. If you then push the Band Up or Band Down buttons on the K3
radio
and back to the band desired Then the KRC-2 does go to the correct Antenna
selection.

It makes things a little difficult for me as I am presently 1200 miles away
from the radio.
This weekend a friend will be there operating the station so its my chance for
him to
look at a few things and maybe correct the problem.

Anyone have any good ideas of where or what to look at?

[Elecraft] Remote Operation on SSB with a K3 radio problem

2010-11-11 Thread John K9UWA
I have successfully operated my home station while away from home on CW on and
off for about a year.

But would like to add the abilty to do SSB to my K3 radio and Computer. The
computer running XP-Pro attached to the K3 has a
good sound card in it but I don't know what hole I should be coming out of the
sound card FROM ? Line Out? External Speaker out?

And into which rear jack on the backside of the K3 radio? Mono line IN ? or Mic
IN ?

Do I also have to make up my cable then perhaps Stereo on the Computer end and
into a Mono on the Radio end?

I tried a Stereo to Stereo cable from a couple of the soundcard outputs into
the Mono Line IN on the K3 but I could not
come up with any settings for the Mic Gain and Antivox on the K3 that actually
worked. They either wouldn't feed adequate
audio to the radio or would ack the curciut and make the antivox act up
tripping it all back off again. Guess I am somewhat
lost.

Sound back and forth between the home radio computer and me wherever I am is
Microsoft program called MS Portrait
which has worked flawlessly for both CW and with speakers hooked up I can also
talk to people if someone is here at my
home in the shack. Somewhat like being on a speaker telephone. It seems to work
better than when I used IP-Sound.
Normally these speakers are disconneted. If we are using the radio and would
only be hooked up if someone were here for
troubleshooting some problem. Also using a VPN to get to and from the computer
using Ham Radio deluxe to control the
 K3 radio.

For CW I use a K1EL USB keyer operated from within HRD and Also have and use
the Windows version of K1EA CT Program.

If this can't be clearly defined, then the project is usually killed.

My problem with the HRD program operating over my network is that the WinKey

This is a copy of the LogFile from HRD's attempt to connect to the WinKey.

  | Time   | Text

|  | 9:19:50 AM | Echoback test, sent HRD BY HB9DRV, received nothing
|  | 9:19:50 AM | Closing connection on COM21

The WinKey works fine from within HRD if your operating it from the computer
tied to the K3 radio and WinKey Keyer.
I followed the setup of the Remote Servers setups and Serial Setup. The
Firewall has been set to allow both HRD and WinKey
programs to operate across to the remote computer. I can't find anything else I
am doing wrong. But so far it won't work.

All Help appreciated on this one.
