[Elecraft] Run For The Bacon - this Sunday!

2024-03-15 Thread Larry Makoski
Come spend a couple hours of good ol' fashioned CW Sprinting with the
Flying Pigs QRP Club International. The monhtly Run For The Bacon is this
Sunday evening, March 17th from 23:00 to 01:00 UTC - 7:00 - 9:00 PM EDT,
6:00 to 8:00 PM CDT, 5:00 to 7:00 MDT, 4:00 to 6:00 PM PDT.

The exchange is easy! Just send your RST, your State/Province/Country along
with your Flying Pig Membership # - if your're not a fellow Piggie (yet)
just send your output power.

Scoring works like this:

QSO Points: Member = 3 points, DX members = 5 points, non member = 1 point

S/P/C Multipliers: State/Province/Country total for all bands. The same SPC
may be worked on multiple bands for SPC credit.

Fifty (50) members worked Multiplier: Work 50 or more piggies = X 2
multiplier The same piggie may be worked on multiple bands for credit
toward this multiplier.

Power: QRP only - 5 Watts or less of RF from your transmiiter's output.

Suggested Frequencies CW: 1810.7-1812, 3560.7-3562, 7030.7-7044,
14060.7-14062, 21060.7-21062, 27185, 28060.7-28062

Final Score: (Total QSO points) * (total SPC) * 2 (if 50 or more members
worked) - but if that's all too complicated - just enter your score at
http://qrpcontest.com/pigrun/autolog.php and the Autologger will figure it
out for you.

If you'd like to join the Flying Pigs, please visit:
http://fpqrp.org/join.php

C'mon join us for some serious pignacious fun!

[Elecraft] Announcing the 2023 NJQRP Skeeter Hunt

2023-06-13 Thread Larry Makoski
The long anticipated announcement for the 2023 NJQRP Skeeter Hunt - the
12th Annual, if you can believe that!

For all the details - please go to www.qsl.net/w2lj or go to the Skeeter
Hunt page of this blog (the next to last tab on the right - located under
the KX3 photo up at the top).

A few points to remember:

1) Due to a personal commitment, the Hunt has been moved to the 4th weekend
of August - the 27th.

2) New Bonus Point Challenge for 2023:

Fifteen Skeeters have graciously consented to act as Bonus Skeeters. They
have been issued numbers that are palindromes (numbers that are the same
forward and backward) - Skeeters 11, 22, 33, 44 .. right through 151.
When you work one, that QSO is worth 100 points - and you can work as many
as you can up to 1,000 bonus points. The Bonus Skeeters are highlighted on
the roster.

3) Skeeter numbers for the rest of you will be issued in the same way as
they have since the beginning of this event. Send an e-mail to either
w...@arrl.net, or w2lj...@gmail.com NO SOONER THAN June 21st, the First Day
of Summer. You will receive an e-mail back with your sequential number, or
you can check the roster, by clicking here. Please do not apply for a
number via the Facebook page, as I may very well miss your request - and we
wouldn't want that to happen, would we? Numbers will be issued right up
until the Midnight before the day of the event.

I hope you'll have fun and enjoy the Hunt this year - good luck and happy
QRP'ing!

[Elecraft] NJQRP Skeeter Hunt - What's next?

2020-08-16 Thread Larry Makoski
Skeeter Hunters,

Wow! That was a blast! Even though band conditions were far from stellar
(I'm trying to be kind!), there seemed to be a lot of activity - and that's
because of all of YOU! Without you, the Skeeter Hunt would be a big
nothing. All of you out there make it what it is - and I'm so grateful to
all of you for that.

The next step is to submit your log summaries. This is not a complicated or
arduous undertaking - NJQRP means to keep it "Easy peasy, lemon squeezy".
No ADIFs or Cabrillos are needed - no jumping through hoops. Just send an
e-mail to w...@arrl.net with the following (example shown)

Larry - W2LJ - NJ
Skeeter #13 - All CW
Single Op
Skeeter QSOs - 23
Non-Skeeter QRP QSOs - 5
Non-Skeeter QRO QSOs - (if any)
S/P/Cs - 18
Station Class Multiplier X4
Bonus - Yes or No as to whether or not you used a homebrew antenna.

Please feel free to include your soapbox comments and any photos you wish
to share.

All this is due two weeks from today - August 30th, 2020. The Scoreboard
will be posted over Labor Day weeebnd and certificates and the publishing
of the Soapbox will follow soon afterward.

On behalf of NJQRP - once again .. thanks do much for being there!

[Elecraft] NJQRP Skeeter Hunt - tomorrow!

2020-08-15 Thread Larry Makoski
Tomorrow, Sunday August 16th is the 9th running of the NJQRP Skeeter Hunt.

277 of you have signed up for Skeeter numbers, so there should be lots of
activity out there. Our fingers are crossed that the Propagation Princess
will be in a good mood and will cooperate. This is an all time record
number of Skeeters - NJQRP thanks each and every one of you for
participating. It's not too late to sign up for a number, I'll be issuing
them right up to about 10:00 AM EDT tomorrow for any late comers - just
send an e-amil to w...@arrl.net and I'll send you an e-mail back with your
Skeeter Number for 2020.

If anyone is fuzzy about the rules, please visit http://www.qsl.net/w2lj -
the rules are easy and not cumbersome. The exchange is easy and the main
goal of this exercize is to provide ample fun - no jumping through hoops
here.

Lastly, in these COVID times, please remember to stay safe. Back yard
operations with a temporary antenna and a power source other than your
home's commercial mains count as portable for the Skeeter Hunt. No need to
go off into the public if you feel safer at home. If you do venture out,
please keep yourself safe by observing your area's restrictions (i.e facial
coverings, social distancing and above all Common Sense). We at NJQRP want
to have you all back next year for the 10th Anniversary of the NJQRP
Skeeter Hunt.

Go out there, be careful and have fun! Hope to hear you and get your call
signs in the log!

[Elecraft] NJQRP Skeeter Hunt - two weeks away!

2020-08-02 Thread Larry Makoski
We're just two weeks away!

Sunday, August 16th is the running of the 9th Annual NJQRP Skeeter Hunt. If
you haven't gotten your Skeeter Number, now is the perfect time. While a
number is not needed to participate, it certainly adds to the fun! Just
send an e-mail to w2lj...@gmail.com with your call sign, name and the state
or province that you will be operating from. You will receive an e-mail
back with your number for 2020. New numbers are issued each year, so don't
assume the number you may have had previously is the same going forward.

All the rules for this Summer Sprint can be found at
https://www.qsl.net/w2lj/

Don't forget that this year, bonus points will be given to those using home
brewed antennas during the Hunt.

During this time of the pandemic, please take all necessary precautions to
keep you and your loved ones safe. As has always been the case for the
Skeeter Hunt, operating from your backyard with a temporary antenna and an
alternative power source STILL counts as a portable operation for the
multiplier. If you feel uncomfortable with going to a public park or
setting - there's no need to! However, if you have a place in mind that you
know will be safe with minimal or no interaction with the public, then
that's fine too. In all cases, we trust you to use common sense.

Above all, have fun, stay safe and may the propagation be with us!

[Elecraft] NAQCC QRPp Sprint

2020-06-15 Thread Larry Makoski
DATE: JUNE 17, 2020 (The evening of the 16th in North America.)

TIME: 0030-0230 UTC

BANDS: 80, 40, 20 (See the General Instructions page for suggested freq.)

mW QRPp SPRINT RULES:

All QSOs are to made with 1-watt of output power or less.

Complete sprint rules including exchange details, operating categories,
scoring, and logging requirements should be reviewed at

http://www.naqcc.info/sprint_rules.html.

MEMBERSHIP DATA FILES:

Membership data files for supported sprint logging applications are
available at
http://www.naqcc.info/contests.html. It is very important that you use the
latest data file in your software. It is available now for download.

LOG SUBMISSIONS:

All sprint logs must be submitted through our Autologger page at
http://www.naqcc.info/autologger.php. Directly emailed logs are no longer
accepted. Some significant updates have been made to this page, including
some automatic error trapping and correcting. Please carefully follow the
instructions given on the page for each of the input fields. (A sample
Autologger page for you to practice on before the start of the sprint is
available. See the list of useful links below.)

Logging options and specific log formatting details can be found on the
Sprint Rules page at
http://www.naqcc.info/sprint_rules.html.

AN INTRODUCTION TO OUR NAQCC SPRINTS:

If you have been hesitant to give ham radio contesting a try you really
should consider our NAQCC sprints. Our sprints are specifically tailored to
help new CW operators get their first contesting experience. Our most
popular operating category is for using a straight key and this
automatically keeps the CW speeds relatively low. Additionally the exchange
is simple and virtually everyone operating in the sprint is more than
willing to slow down or give repeats. Once the sprint is over we make log
submission easy with our automated Autologger page.

Although scores are posted on our website and award certificates are issued,
the real goal of our sprints is not to win something. It's to have FUN
while promoting CW QRP operating. EVERYONE who participates in the sprint
is a WINNER, and in keeping with this philosophy we have a drawing each
month for a nice prize that all of our member participants are entered into.
It doesn't matter if you made 1 QSO or 100 QSOs, everyone has a chance to
win the prize.

Skeeter Hunters!

as of 12:01 AM Saturday EDTwill be honored.

"Why/ What difference does it make?" you may well ask yourself. The answer
is simple - it gives eveyone interested an equal opportunity to acquire a
lower number. To some that's no big deal, but to others it's a very big
deal - so everyone gets the same chance. And it also adds another level of
participation that keeps YOU in the game, so to speak.

Why new numbers every year and not the same one year after year like other
contests? Because not everyone can participate each year - family
commitments or vacations or other things come up that prevent people from
participating.

So folks, start pouring in those e-mails to w2lj...@gmail.com AFTER
Midnight when this coming Friday turns into Saturday, here in NJ. And as
always, please, please, PLEASE include your call sign, your name (that you
will use when operating) and the State or Province that you will be
operating from.

Hope to hear from you all real soon!

done so - all the details are at www.qsl.net/w2lj.
If you didn't miss SYBO or FOBB, here's your chance to beat your best score
from the other two. See you on the airwaves soon!

[Elecraft] 2014 NJQRP Skeeter Hunt

2014-08-11 Thread Larry Makoski
On behalf of the New Jersey QRP Club, I'd like to thank all of you who
participated in the 2014 Skeeter Hunt. A good time was had by all! We had a
record 159 QRPers sign up for Skeeter numbers and so far 30 log summaries have
been submitted. An event like this cannot be a success without your
participation, and it seems like we're getting that and more - we're growing in
size!

Don't fret about submitting your log as you still have time - but not forever!
Log submissions are due when the clock strikes Midnight on Sunday, August 24th
turning into Monday, Augyst 25th - that's two whole weeks after the event. You
can send your summaries, soapbox comments and photos to w...@arrl.net

And if you didn't have a Skeeter number, but you joined in on the fun, send in
your summary anyway. We've already received two submissions from Non-Skeeters
and the highest scoring wingless one will also receive a certificate,

Thanks again!

[Elecraft] 2013 NJQRP Skeeter Hunt Announcement

2013-04-30 Thread Larry Makoski
The NJQRP Club is announcing the Second Annual Skeeter Hunt. The objective
is to get QRPers out of their shacks for the day; and into the fresh air and
sunshine, to spread their wings and fill the airwaves with Skeeters. While
commercial equipment can certainly utilized, bonus multipliers will be awarded
for those who personally home brewed their own or kit built their own equipment
(equipment not built by the operator would not count as either home brewed or
kit built - it would be considered commercial equipment). This year, the event
is to be held on Sunday August 11th. It will be a four hour sprint - from
17:00 UTC to 21:00 UTC (1:00 TO 5:00 PM EDT).

The theme for this year is bodies of water. We all know that Skeeters love
the water. While we donÂ’t want you going anywhere near actual Skeeter breeding
grounds, we encourage operating near any local rivers, brooks, creeks, lakes,
ponds, reservoirs, or even near a bay or the sea shore! Please make sure to
take pictures and tell us about it in your Soapbox comments. (Bird baths,
swimming pools, old tires filled with water, buckets, Dixie cups, etc. will NOT
count for the contest!)

Stations who wish to be designated as Skeeters can get a Skeeter number by
requesting one by sending an e-mail to w...@arrl.net Please let me know if you
intend to operate from a state other than your home state as listed on QRZ.
Skeeter numbers will be issued from May through the day before the event. The
official Website for the NJQRP Skeeter Hunt is http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/

Station Classes and Multipliers
X1 Home stations - commercial equipment
X2 Home stations - home brewed or kit built equipment
X3 Portable station - commercial equipment
X4 Portable station - home brewed or kit built equipment

Portable stations cannot use permanent antennas, i.e you can't work from your
backyard, hook up to your dipole or tower and yagi and be considered a portable
station. Also, portable stations cannot be connected to the local power grid -
alternative energy sources must be used - solar, battery, wind, etc.

Multi-Op Stations: - Great idea! Want to get together with some of your best
buds to have a barbeque and hunt some Skeeters? FB deal, OM! When you send in
your log, send the calls of everyone who participated under that call and or
Skeeter number. And remember to send pictures of your group for the soapbox!

Suggested Call - Either CQ QRP or CQ BZZ

Exchange -
Skeeter Stations - RST, S/P/C, Skeeter number
Non-Skeeter Stations - RST, S/P/C, Output power

Modes – CW, SSB (new for this year!)
Power - 5W max CW, 10 Watts max SSB

Scoring -
Working a Skeeter Station - 2 points
Working a non-Skeeter Station - 1 point
Work a WAE station - 3 points - Yes! The Worked All Europe contest (CW) is the
same day - working DX stations (different continent) will get you extra points!

Total score equals the number of QSO points times the number of S/P/Cs worked
on all bands (stations can be worked on multiple bands for QSO points and S/P/C
credit) times the multiplier for station class. For example, if you work W2LJ
on 20 and 40 Meters, it counts as 2 QSOs and NJ counts for a S/P/C on each band.

Bonus points – An extra 500 points can be added to your score if you operate
near a lake, stream, river, pond, beach, etc. as stated above Please send a
photo of your set up, along with your log submission in order to claim points.

Suggested frequencies:
The QRP Watering Holes

For CW
80 Meters ~ 3.560 MHz
40 Meters ~ 7.040 and 7.030 MHz - also consider using from 7.114 to 7.122 MHz
for a slower speed CW area. We want to have everyone involved!
20 Meters ~ 14.060 MHz
15 Meters ~ 21.060 MHz
10 Meters ~ 28.060 MHz

For SSB
80 Meters ~ 3.985 MHz
40 Meters ~ 7.285 MHz
20 Meters ~ 14.285 MHz
15 Meters ~ 21.385 MHz
10 Meters ~ 28.885 MHz

These are suggested starting points, of course. Feel free to spread out and
give your Skeeter wings a chance to do their thing.

Categories: CW Only and SSB Only, or Mixed Operating will be considered
separate categories. Please indicate with your log summary which category you
are participating as.

Log summaries, photos and soapbox comments can be sent to w...@arrl.net no
later than 14 days after the event. Certificates will be issued to the top
scorers of each category as well as others to be determined. Here's an example
of a summary that should be used:

Larry - W2LJ - NJ
Skeeter #4 - All CW
Skeeter QSOs - 23
Non-Skeeter QSOs - 5
DX QSOs - (if any)
S/P/Cs - 18
Station Class Multiplier X4
Claiming Bonus - No

If you send me all that information, I will figure out your score for you.

Hope to hear and work all of you during this year's event. Special thanks to
the NJQRP club for their sponsorship!

[Elecraft] Thursday night - special NAQCC 160M Sprint

2008-01-23 Thread Larry Makoski
We are offering a second edition of our special 160M sprint which is now
going to be an annual event a day or two before the January CQWW 160M
Contest. We were pleased with the response (22 logs showing 51 different
participants) to our initial offering last year and feel it is something
our members really like. It is also an opportunity to do some final 160M
testing before the CQ Contest. Some members don't believe QRP and simple
wire antennas work well on 160M. This also provides a chance for them to
prove themselves wrong. QRP does work well on 160M just as on any other
band, even with simple small wire antennas.

RULES specific to this sprint:

Date and time:
Friday, January 25, 2007 from 0130-0330Z which is Thursday evening here
in the USA

Bands Used This Sprint:
160 meters only (1810 kHz +/- 3kHz)

Entry Deadline:
All entries must be postmarked or email dated before 2400Z on Jan 31, 2008.

[Elecraft] NJQRP Homebrewer Sprint this Sunday!

2007-09-21 Thread Larry Makoski
It's that time of year, again! Time for the Fall edition of the NJQRP
Homebrewer Sprint. It will be held this Sunday night (Monday morning UTC
time). So put on your headphones, grab your key and come join us for a
spell. Work a half-hour, work an hour, work all four! The point is to
join in and have some fun!

This time, however, this will be a CW ONLY event, due to the lack of
PSK-31 entries.

Mission: Promote homebrewed homemade equipment on the air
together. Kits are considered homebrew. Anyone with ANY equipment can
enter; and is highly encouraged to do so!

Sponsor:New Jersey QRP Club ( http://www.njqrp.org )

When:The fourth Monday in March and in September, -0400 UTC
  (Sunday evening in USA/Canada)

Modes: CW only, starting this edition, QRP friendly frequencies
recommended on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters.

Exchange: RST - State/Province/Country - Power out

QSO Points:
2 Commercial Equipment
3 Homebrew Xmtr or Rcvr
4 Homebrew Xmtr AND Rcvr or Xcvr
(Kits are okay for homebrew)

Power Mult: The highest power used during the contest determines the
multiplier ...

a) 5W = X1
b) 1-5W = X7
c) 250mW - 1W = X10
d) 250mW or less = X15

Multiplier: State/Province/Country for all bands. The same station may
be worked on more than one band for QSO points and

SPC credit.

SCORE: Points(total for all bands)
x SPC (total for all bands)
x power multiplier.

Awards: Awards: Special certificates will be awarded.

Results: Sprint results will be published on the NJQRP Web pages

Logs: Entries must be received by 30 days from the contest. The log
sheets and summary should be included. E-mail logs are accepted in text

Soapbox:

I didn't hear much except static crashes - no AGC isn't nice
on the eardrums! - VE3HUR

Where was the activity??? Quit after the first two hours for lack of
anyone to work. - N4BP

I set up my DSWs and listened for the first half hour on 40 and 80. I didn't hear anyone
playing! So I quit. Then I thought, I can't quit. So I listened on 40 with
the FT-900. There was Bob, N4BP. The only player. I worked him and quit again. Then I
listened again an hour later. 40 was very dead. But Bob had moved to 80 and I worked him
there. Then I picked up Bill AB1AV and KG4W in VA. So I quit this sprint 3 times. - W1PID

Thanks for a fun contest. But where did everyone go after 0200Z??? I guess
conditions really went downhill after that, but tried to keep going right to
the end. Big surprise was WB8LZG, who I was sure was QRO, he was so loud.
Really enjoyed getting a 119 from Bulgaria! - KR1S

My 20m antenna isn't the greatest so I decided to fire up on 40m. I was hoping
I'd find enough Qs there to keep me somewhat busy. However, that didn't turn
out to be the case. Since I didn't have 80m in the K1, I decided to stick it
out there on 40 for a bit but the sparce activity continued. I never did get
to work any west coast stations. I heard K7TQ work N4BP but then he
disappeared. Anyway, I thank the sponsor for this event and the opportunity to
work other homebrewers and play radio. - K8KFJ

Participation seemed light, or perhaps propagation only covered the East Coast.
N4BP was loud as usual, but KD2MX was really booming in. Maybe I'm not a
contester, since I quit at bedtime, but I was glad to catch this sprint. - AB1AV

This is my entry for the HB Sprint on Sunday night 3-25-07. This is my 1st
effort in the event.
- KG4W

The bands were very noisy and I lost a couple of potential QSOs in the QRN.
Seemed like activity was way off from last year or conditions were worse then
they seemed as QSOs were few and far between. - KD2MX

Very gud signals on the band tonight. W4QO was booming into Michigan with just
400mw ! WOW ! Great signal. Band went long abt 0130 Z here. Lots of fun es a
gud turnout. - WB8LZG

Thanks alot for sponsoring the event. Didn't hear much activity, but decided to
send in a log anyway

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft / HexKey discovery

2007-09-19 Thread Larry Makoski
I have Elecraft HexKey #016 and have had NO problem. It has stayed put

finest set of paddles I have ever had the pleasure to own and use.

[qrp-l.org] RFTB tonight

Guys,

My sincerest apologies! RFTB tonight, as usual.

I've been pre-occupied all day - my mother-in-law broke her hip and is

Thanks for your indulgence!

[Elecraft] Foxtravaganza Summer 2007

2007-09-15 Thread Larry Makoski

To all QRP Fox hunters:

It has been past practice to end a Fox Hunt season with a little
excersize that we like to call a Foxtravaganza. A blow out where ALL
the Foxes, alternates and Fox Hunt Committee members get on the air at
the same time to see how many pelts can be given out. It's also a last
ditch effort to put off the post season blues for one more week for
those of us who go into post-Fox Hunt season depression!

So ... you are all invited to come out and play for one more
Thursday night - next Thursday night, September 20th. The Foxtravaganza
will be held during the regular Foxhunt time, 0100-0230 UTC
(technically, that's Friday morning UTC time!). Set your radio anywhere
between 14.050 and 14.070 and start listening for stations calling CQ
FOX and start chasing those pelts! And hey, since there's a lot of us
- don't feel that you have to be constrained by the 050 - 070 frequency
range. It won't hurt to spread things out a bit!

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Foxes should start making announcements to
declare whether or not they will be participating. If EVERYONE
participates, here's a roll call of stations you can expect to hear:

N1FN
WC7S
AA4N
K4BAI
W5KDJ
KV2X
NK6A
K3ESE
N1IX
N0IT
K5GQ
KZ5J
K4OSO
KC2EGL
K0FRP
KE0N
K0EVZ
N9AW
N9NE
VE5RC
and yours truly, W2LJ

There won't be any scorekeeping; but feel free to post your soapbox
comments to QFOX afterwards, should you so desire. As always, full
details can be found at: http://www.qrpfoxhunt.org/

Hope to hear you all on the air next Thursday night. The Foxtravaganza
will coincide nicely with the official end of Summer 2007. And once
again, THANK YOU all so much for making this past Summer season a
bonafide success!

[Elecraft] Special milliWatt RFTB

2007-08-04 Thread Larry Makoski
Are you chained to your QRP KiloWatt? Have you ever wanted to try
milliWatting but were afraid that it might be too hard, or perhaps too
frustrating; or just plain futile? This Sunday evening the Flying Pigs
Amateur Radio Club International will be holding a special milliWatt Run
For The Bacon! This is your chance to see just exactly what less than a
Watt can do!This challenging, and perhaps eye opening, two hour QRP
CW Sprint, which is open to ALL radio amateurs, will last from 9:00 -
11:00PM EDT (0100-0300 UTC Monday).

It will work EXACTLY like a normal RFTB with one important exception -
you MUST run less that 1 Watt of power!

You may work stations once per band on 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 or 10
Meters. Suggested starting frequencies are 1.812, 3.562, 7.044, 14.062,
21.062, and 28.062 MHz.

or you can mail your logs to the address given on the Autolog page. The
deadline for logs is August 12th at 2400 UTC.

Hope to catch you on the air Sunday evening - who will be named the Top
Piglet of the Sty?
