Re: [Elecraft] OT: The 4-track mind

2023-12-10 Thread Mike Short
My father worked with a guy in the Army (57-60 era) that was a CW operator.
He copied code groups with split headphones, his left ear on a typewriter,
right ear written down, speaker in front of him he remembered until a pause
in one of the other messages and copied it down. He did have to be locked
up a few times per year.

I acquired these kits unassembled. I need a VFO and was wondering if
something like
http://ozqrp.com/docs/DDSVFO_manual_V1_2.pdf would work? Any other
suggestions?

Just in time works fine when you also have emergency stocks. Too many
companies cut costs by not maintaining emergency stock and lack of multiple
sources.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Fires

Years of mismanagement contribute to the fires. Forest Service and states
have not culled dead trees, allow logging, and not done controlled burns to
reduce the fuel. Building homes in canyons with Santa Ana winds also does
not help. Until there is a serious change in how forests are managed, this
will be a normal occurrence

Re: [Elecraft] Rig forCW

2020-05-12 Thread Mike Short
Newer LDMOS amps don’t need much input power to develop full output. I am
building a 600W amp that needs about 3watts input. My KX3 will do
just fine. In fact I had an input attenuator made that will allow full
power from the KX3 drive the amp at full power. I also have a K3/10.

I got my Novice in 1972 in Boise Idaho. I don’t remember if there was an
FCC office there. Would they have gone to other cities to administer exams,
or did they have VE’s by then? My dad and I both tested together.

[Elecraft] K2 VFO/ALC issues

2019-05-31 Thread Mike Short
I recently bought a used K2/10 and the S-Meter does not work. I am looking
at the K2 VFO/ALC mod and have a question about the 1N4148s that are added
to Q18.

This one has a 1N4148 installed on the bottom of the board anode to cathode
across D13, and no diode from Q18-S to ground. Was the additional diode
part of another mod? Seems to me that it would defeat the purpose of D13.

[Elecraft] Hearing aids

2011-07-12 Thread Mike Short
My Dad has Phonak hearing aids and has the iCOM TVLink.
http://www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/products/accessories/communication/icom/overview.html

He wears a module around his neck, and the base unit plugs in to the TV
audio, or his ham radio. Pipes the audio directly in to the hearing aids
via bluetooth. Works very well. The bluetooth devices available on ebay
and similar are designed for the most part to support wireless
headphones, etc, and don't work with the Phonak, at least the few I
tested. There are several bluetooth profiles, and they do different
things.

Used the W2 with my K3/P3 on field day. Other radios were causing the

A new feature would then be to reset the old KAT3 settings or to 'calibrate'

the whole band automatically with the KAT3. And after that it is a little
step to a complete antenna analyzer feature on the K3 hi!

[Elecraft] Off Topic Hearing Aids

2010-07-22 Thread Mike Short
My dad recently got fitted with new hearing aids, and is a ham.

They are here:
http://www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/products/accessories/communication/icom/ove
rview.html

He did not get the iCOM unit yet, but will probably soon. Any hints, ideas,
etc to help get him back on the air?

Since this unit uses Bluetooth, any ideas on a blue tooth device to connect
to an Icom 706?

I am about a year or two away from hearing aids myself. Too much jet noise.

Julian -
I have been having this problem for several months. I must disconnect my K3

often due to frequent thunder storms here in Florida.

I find that using the cables going to the two DIN plugs as supports has
helped. I haven't yet tied the 4 cables together with tie-wraps, but will
do so when my troubles escalate further.

The jacks look like common stuff and ought be available in the UK.

Has anyone else had trouble with these sockets? Are they user replaceable
using parts obtainable in the UK?

Re: [Elecraft] Single band QRP rig

2009-03-01 Thread Mike Short
Thanks for all the input. I ordered a TenTec 1340
To fool around with for now. If it seems to work out,
I will get a K1 and expand the bands available. I have a Z-100 tuner,
An 8A switching power supply from a computer, and an HF-Packer amp
If I get it finished for more power. Now to figure out an antenna.

[Elecraft] [K3] IF output

2009-01-19 Thread Mike Short
Is the IF output on all the time? I have a softrock that isn't working, and
was wondering if I was even getting an output.

I built the softrock, and have Jack Smith's Buffer Amp, feeding to an
EMU-0202 USB sound card. Rocky and PowerSDR-IF do not appear to display
anything but
noise, but then I am not really sure what I am doing here. Any help would be

[Elecraft] Off Topic Soldering/Desoldering station

2009-01-10 Thread Mike Short
I am looking for a desoldering station. I have been currently using a
combination of solder wick and solder sucker as appropriate,
but after 18 years in avionics, miss the Pace station. Any recommendations?
Also, I have noticed on Ebay quite a few hot air soldering stations.
I know they are used primarily for SMT work, but how are they on thru hole
with a sufficiently narrow tip?
Stuff has changed a lot over the years...

RE: [K3] [Elecraft] Constant Level Line Out with Monitor

2009-01-03 Thread Mike Short
The problem I see with that is feedback. Having a speaker and a live mic in

Think of people that call in to radio programs, there are always a few that
leave the radio on, and have to turn it down.

Hi,

I hate to be a wet blanket, but having to listen to myself in the headphones
in order to be able to record the transmitted audio is very tiring. I do not
normally have Monitor on while operating. May I suggest another toggle
feature whereby the Monitor output can be directed to phones/speakers, line
out or both? Another alternative would be to have a separate line out level
for RX and TX audio and leave the Monitor function out of this. Yes, this is
getting complicated but I don't think the current setup will cut it for
people who want to record an entire operating session (ideal for a net
control operator who wants to document his operation for example).

[Elecraft] K2/100 RF output varies

2008-06-01 Thread Mike Short
I was recently testing a refurbished SB-200 I am working on. I am using my
K2 as the exciter, and had issues on all bands with the K2 remember the
power output
requested. I have connected everthing as follows: K2/100MFJ-993 Tuner in
bypass to only show power in and SWR on input circuit of amp,
SB-200LP-100 wattmeter1KW dummy load.

When I would advance power output from about 10W or so to 70-90W output in
to amp, when I take the K2 out of tune mode, and re-enter, the power would
be 20W or so until I moved the Power knob a bit, then it would go back to
the 70-90W requested. The K2 and the amp are about a foot apart, but the
cover is off the amp, since I was doing some input circuit adjustments.
Maybe I am getting RF back in to the K2?

RE: [Elecraft] Interesting Stuff At Dayton

2008-05-19 Thread Mike Short
What I am in the process of doing is putting together the Softrock receiver,
and lashing it up to a micro ITX formfactor
PC. They are very small, and have the ability to use a 12V DC power input.
Do a search on car computers, and there is a ton of stuff there.
Mate it with an old LCD monitor that is small, or they make 6-8 inch
monitors that are expensive. With this arrangement, the scope would be about
the
Size of any other kind of scope, and could still be used as a shack PC for
rig control, logging, etc.

 Hi All,

Something that I saw at Dayton may be of interest to Elecraft
owners--particularly K3, and possibly K2 folks. Jay Bromley and I visited
with Larry Phipps at his booth for a while. Larry has several very
innovative items that he sells, including probably the most unique
wattmeter/SWR meter you can find anywhere (the LP-100A). What caught our
attention was Larry's new panadapter for the K3. He's contemplating doing
one for the K2 as well. Anyway, this new gadget (I hope I don't offend
Larry by calling it a gadget) is very impressive. You should really go to
his website to get the full details, but believe me, it is really a slick
piece of engineering. I'm not fully familiar with the Icom bandscope on
it's higher end rigs, but I think this product from Larry will rival or
exceed what you find there. Additionally, it really constitutes a 2nd
receiver, which opens up all sorts of possibilities. For example, maybe
if you get this accessory you really don't get enough more with the
Elecraft 2nd RX Can't really say that for sure, but it's pretty clear
that Larry has something that might give one pause as to whether or not
they need something over and above that. Anyway, the demo Larry gave us
was most impressive. I suggest you keep one eye on his website for more
details. In any event, the panadapter is fairly reasonable, and is
available in either kit form or fully assembled. Larry says building it
is not very difficult or time consuming. By all means, check all of this
 out.

It appears to me that it would be a second receiver only with the aid of a
PC, sound card and SDR software.

What I would like to see is an external bandscope that does not require a
computer. Either it would be completely self contained, or it would use an
inexpensive portable LCD TV for its display. Perhaps Elecraft will come up
with something like this in the future?

RE: [Elecraft] New Orders

2008-02-04 Thread Mike Short
The thing people forget is that YaeComWood, TenTec, etc have much deeper
pockets and more resources. Borrowing a few million for them is no big deal,
but a substantial risk for a company of Elecraft's size. If a product does
not do well, there is less impact on the bottom line. The other companies
also have many more models to spread the pain over, as well as other
divisions that can contribute resources to development. You don't generally
hear about a product too much until it is ready to launch, and units are
already built and often on the way to dealers. You also get them with all
the warts that were deemed not worth fixing right away, as the early
adopters can beta test. (Just a generalization, not aimed at any specific
company) Sure there have been manufacturing problems, etc. Since they don't
own the plant, but have to contract it out, a lot of control is lost.
Elecraft's high standards are not easy to meet, causing further delays.

If I had the money in May or any time after, I would have gladly paid a
deposit and waited. (I know, easy for me to say) I seriously considered
liquidating my equipment to do that very thing, but did not. In hind sight,
I should have, since I have been too busy to do any serious operating
anyway. I would now have a K3...

[Elecraft] Woodpecker, etc

2007-06-09 Thread mike . short
The Soviet aircraft had both solid state and tube radios and other navigation
equipment. The tubes were used both as a backup, and for EMP protection after a
nuclear attack. Our solid state equipment of the day would likely have seized
up. Good thinking on their part.

RE: [Elecraft] max power suggested on PSK with K2/100

2007-06-02 Thread Mike Short
25W. There has been several discussions this week about PSK output. Since it
is a keydown mode PSK can be thought of as AM mode as far as power ratings,
and so 1/4 of your rated output should be the max.

Subject: [Elecraft] max power suggested on PSK with K2/100

I just worked KJ5XF who suggested that running 50W PSK would fry the
finals. I thought 50 was about max for safe PSK.
What's the latest on this?

Thanks

John
